    Another Bus Rider.....
I everyone. I guess I'm somewhat new on the bus but not really.... My fascination with the Dead and their music has really been enhanced in the last year or so by listening the Sirius XM Grateful Dead Channel. I was lucky to see the Dead 3 times. I got into the Dead in 1987. I had a friend at the time who was a real Deadhead. I was more into Hendrix, the Stones, Pink Floyd and such. He talked me into going to my first show. To be honest, prior to that I didn't know what all the fuss was about. My first Dead album was Skeleton's in the Closet. I was pretty young and the album didn't hook me. I didn't get the country angle then and my musical vocabulary was quite limited. My friend turned me on to "Blues for Allah" and "Terrapin Station". Those grabbed me more and the live shows hooked me. I was in college in the early 90's so I was pretty broke and didn't hit any shows for a while. I was doing a college radio show and one of my shows was a late 60's psychedelic show (of which the Dead were in the rotation of course). My show was a free from psychedelic show that could go from Syd Barrett to live Hendrix to well anywhere I wanted to go. All of us college Dee Jay's were friends. There was also a Dead Show at the station. One night one of the Dead Dee Jay's asked me to run the show for him because he was going out of town. Cool, I thought.... That turned out to be the week Jerry passed. I suddenly felt very uncomfortable but did my best to cobble together a fitting "tribute" show that week. It was a surreal experience. The listeners said I did a good job even though I was just a substitute Dee Jay. I went through another Dead phase in 2000 when I got married for the first time. We listened to the Dead all the way up to Reno for one of those overnight marriages. unfortunately the marriage didn't take but we had fun and I got a son out of the deal. I think the Dead were very wise to let the fans record all those shows. It really keeps the legacy alive. I think of other old bands I like and it's like you got the same one or two live albums to last 20 years..... I might take a trip down to L.A. to see Cubensis. The music really relaxes me and brings out the good side of my nature. I can get uptight a lot. The music puts me in the moment and is always different. I had to quit drinking a few years back so I need things to help me unwind. A good Dead show really seems to do the trick. There's enough shows on the Archive to last me a while. Thanks for letting me introduce myself.

Throughout the years of my travels from Cali to AZ to Chitown, there has been alot of my friends that couldn't help being influenced by the Dead...they were around me. It's funny to look back over the last years, and talking to old friends, and knowing that at least 5 people are going to see The Dead for the first time this spring! _See tagline below_ ____________________________________________________ Will you come with me? I was turned on through "The Schwag" a GD tribute band...if it weren't for tribute bands being around i think a lot of "youngens" would have never gotten on the bus...the torch bearers deserve quite a bit of credit....be sure and listen to the "Tales from the Golden Road" on the GD Channel March 8th...I sent a few emails to Gans (host) and got my lil brainchild to come to fruition finally....the whole show is deadicated to the various tribute bands around...I believe he is going to be interviewing Jimmy Tebeau-the founder of "The Schwag" "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul."

I mean, someone who ain't never even heard a studio album of the Grateful Dead let alone any live tapes of the Grateful Dead... then imagine playing them some choice live tapes with Garcia in the bus ride home... ( -; mind bender that one. there gotta be Grateful Dead, The Dead, Ratdog, Phil, and 'Garcia' virgins out there somewheres... sounds like a search and rescue mission which needs accompLESHing! peace.

Hey Hello and HelpHey now from Austin Texas (good shows from the boyz at Manor Downs!) A friend Railroad Bill was playing "Bob Fried Memorial Boogie" on his radio show in Baton Rouge yesterday and emailed asking if anyone Knew how Bob Fried died? I can't seem to glean any info off the web so was hoping that some folks on the west coast might remember anything (besides passing away in San Mateo in 1974?). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Great song. I've always thought that song, the Pina Colada song and Baker Street were cut from the same great cloth.

I am a 54 year old insurance agent in Miami, Saw the GD at Gulfstream in 1969? hated them, got into the 72 Live album, lost touch always loved the Beatles,ABB, Little Feat etc and then came my decade long jazz obsession. I work with a younger guy who is into the GD and Phish. Between him and his brother who is about my age they have seen the GD about 150 times. Starting listening about two years ago and then about a year ago it hit. I start every morning watching the 89 Oakland New years show while I use my Nordic Track. I finish and stretch out to Terrapin which to me is the greatest song ever. I do listen to WDNA the jazz station in Miami and I try not to listen to the GD in the car. I am a native plant person and my yard is a giant butterfly garden. I am forming sculptures depicting my favorite songs. My wife will listen with me and loves Uncle John-Scarlett >Fire and Terrapin. And the road goes on forever.... BobbaLee

Welcome to the wonderful world of Dead.net! All of us have experienced the double posting bug at some time or another. Sunshine Daydream used to be a master of that-with the occasional triple! Perhaps is an initiation rite or something :-)********************************** Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone, you will still exist, but you have ceased to live. Samuel Clemens

I too saw my first show and didn't "get it". I went to a large 3 day music festival (US Festival) and was there to see the bands of the day (Police,English Beat,Oingo Boingo, Clash, etc..) I saw GD's less than interesting performance at 9a and thought nothing more of them. In 1987 I was really into playing Dylan tunes on the Guitar so when he came to So Cal with GD in tow something clicked and I knew this was great band. I was on the steps of the bus and then when I saw them again in 1988 in Long Beach I got both feet on thed bus and have not looked back! Thanks Bobba for sharing your inspirations as well. Eric

Hello everyone! Im actually writing a paper on Deadheads, and I had a few questions..hopefully you can all help enlighten me! Can you clarify the 'on the bus' expression? Also, besides tie-dyed t-shirts what did most deadheads wear? Are there any expressions or slang that is commonly used? I hope somebody can help! Thanks!

The expression comes from "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test," a book you will find instructive as to the cultural roots. You will also learn about that other fine expression, "Never Trust a Prankster," which may come in handy when considering some of the answers you're likely to get to your questions...

In response to Csilla's question re: what do Dead Heads wear other than tie-dyes? Having mentally surveyed my own closet and recalling many a show, this is what comes to mind (in no particular order): Panchos, Birkenstocks, Crocs, Patchwork shorts, pants or other garments, t-shirts from other bands: SCI, Widespread, Phish, etc., face glitter, hemp jewelry, tatoos, dreads, hair wraps, ferry wings, hoolahoops, Elvis sun glasses, glow sticks, watermellon masks, straw hats, backpacks, bandanas, favorite MLB baseball team hat, and any body piercing you can think of.

I thank god for the DVDs and really loud HD TV.when I wear the GD golf shirts straight people have no idea what it is but kids smirk and nod. And the road goes on forever.... BobbaLee

Quite a few of us were also devoted VW bus fans who decked out our pop-top campers and cargo vans with and endless amount of Dead stickers we purchased in the parking lots. (It was a sad day when my own beloved 78 VW bus would no longer pass California's Smog II test without considerable expense. Wrecking yards are now full of quite a few that limped their way across country and back.) Yes, those beloved VW vans were, in the words of Austin Powers, "shaggin wagons." Fess up, folks. Even on a thread like this one. There was more to the scene than just the band. The parking lot scene allowed all of us who owned VW vans and the like - a cheap alternative to budget motels and a fun place to party all night. We were carrying on the original idea of Kesey's bus, but with more up-to-date sound systems and modern conveniences. Some of us were smart enough to invest in portable chemical toilets. You should not overlook the "in the bus" late evening crowd where countless children probably were conceived along the way - those one-night rendevous with that special someone whom we met during Drums/Space and whisked off to the twilight of the parking lot to consummate our new found love. Yes, I remember those days well.

I'm new here. I've actually been lurking around for almost a year, but finally decided to register and say Hi. I'm just so happy right now! You see, as with a lot of things, I never took advantage of the opportunities I had when I was younger to see the boys play. On 3 different occasions in the 80's and 90's I had tickets in my hands to go, only to give them to someone I thought would enjoy it more than me. If I could only have those moments back, Anyways, I know it's not exactly the same, but I got tix for the "Change Rocks" show, and I can't even convey how excited I am about this. I would of much rather had my first expierence be on the floor, but I'm thankful I got tix up in the nosebleeds. Well, back to my Fillmore 70 show. Thanks for such a wonderful place it's gratefully appreciated. Billy Be Kind!
