    Dave's Picks Volume 2
    July 31, 1974
    SOLD OUT

    Subscriber's Only
    Bonus Disc Cover.

Dave’s Picks Volume 2 is officially SOLD OUT.

Stay tuned for an upcoming seaside chat with David Lemieux as part of our Dave’s Picks series.

    ABOUT VOLUME 2

We warned you. We said there was a chance that the limited edition Dave’s Picks releases could sell out. And sure enough, Volume 1 is a goner. No copies left. (OK, even we were a little surprised it sold out so quickly.)

Which brings us to Dave’s Picks, Volume 2. The thousands of you who bought the full-year Dave’s Picks subscription have nothing to worry about. Your CDs (and the bonus disc that comes with this one for subscribers) will be winging their way to you shortly. But NOW is the time when all you other good people who are interested in purchasing this potent slice of Dead history can submit your orders.

The show in question is a three-set wonder from Hartford’s Dillon Stadium during the heart of the Wall of Sound era, July 31, 1974, four days after the release of the Dead’s fine Mars Hotel album. Dwarfed by the Wall’s irregular columns of speakers on a hot and humid Wednesday afternoon, the band thrilled the sold-out crowd of 20,000 with a far-ranging collection of tunes and jams that showed how far they’d come as musicians, songwriters and interpreters of others’ songs in their decade together.

The 12-song first set kicks off with the still-new “Scarlet Begonias” (opening a show for the first of just three times in the Dead’s entire history), and includes such other early ’70s favorites as “Jack Straw,” “Brown-Eyed Women,” a pairing of “Mississippi Half-Step” and “Must’ve Been the Roses” and “Row Jimmy.” The '73-’74 versions of “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider” have a unique character, and this one exemplifies that nicely.

Things start to open up a bit more in the second set. An expansive “Eyes of the World” is partnered with a particularly fragile “China Doll” mid-set, and the concluding take on the complete “Weather Report Suite” is filled with impressive shifts in dynamics and purposeful jamming during a 12-minute “Let It Grow.” That set also has a good “Big River” and an excellent “Ship of Fools” (another new song that year).

Set Three starts with a couple of short selections, hits an early emotional peak with one of the better versions of “To Lay Me Down” from that era, and then really goes into gear with the onset of “Truckin’,” so often a gateway to wondrous possibilities. This one rumbles and wanders and flits and crashes and dashes all over the place during a half-hour exploration that includes what is popularly called the “Mind Left Body” jam and a full-blown Spanish jam, before eventually winding up at the docks for a deep “Wharf Rat.” The set closer, “U.S. Blues,” was one of the anchors of the Mars Hotel album (and an FM radio hit at the time); a perfect summer anthem.

All Dave’s Picks releases are mastered to HDCD specs from the original vault tapes by Jeffrey Norman, and include a booklet containing an essay about the show and period photos. The Digipak is made of 100% recycled and PCW materials on heavier paper stock due to high demand. The limited edition consists of 12,000 numbered copies.

    A similar hilarious timeline...
to that which ecb related a few posts back. May 1: E-mail "Now shipping" stating that there were only 500 copies left and suggesting that if I wanted to get my greasy paws on a copy I should not wait too long before ordering (I have a subscription) May 8: E-mail "Your dead.net order has shipped". I saw this mail 10 minutes after I got home from work. The first thing I saw on getting home was a note from the postman telling me that there was a package waiting for me at my next-door neighbours, which was (of course) Dave's Picks Vol. 2. #4230. Fortunately the e-mail did not contain bad news about extra shipping costs, but then I live in Holland and this phenomenon is seemingly reserved for domestic US punters. It did state that the order had shipped on January 29th which amused me. It has to be said that a May 8 arrival date for the goods is extremely quick bearing in mind it had to cross the pond - a new speed record in my experience. This assumes, of course, that it was shipped around May 1st rather than January 29th. The bad news is that a few weeks ago, my CD player (with HDCD) went belly-up and a replacement will not arrive before the weekend. The now-dead player had lasted some 16 years so I can't really complain. I very quickly found that HDCD-equipped CD players are not that easy to find but as I have several hundred HDCD-CDs, I considered the incluson of the HDCD facility a necessity. Not only Dead CDs are HDCD - many others are mastered to the HDCD spec. but nowhere in the booklet, cover etc. is this stated. The only easy way to know is if you have a HDCD player. When the CD is played a light comes on announcing the fact. If you don't have a HDCD player, there is no way to know. Anyway, the new CD player, a Naim Audio CD5 XS, is on its way. I am curious to know how it will sound compared to the old Theta Digital player. It certainly sounded good in the shop - but don't they always! Meanwhile, all I can do is read the booklet, look at the cover art and get excited in anticipation of actually hearing this thang. So far I have only seen positive comments about the music, which bodes well.

    Arrived Friday in WA State
On my second listen now. What 'me' (user name) is saying sounds about right. Jerry is definitely a bit low in the mix at times, and Keith sounds pretty darn high (in the mix). It is fun to imagine what this would sound like if it had been recorded for an official release. I think the bonus disc has a better sound quality to it than the 7/31 show honestly. On the one hand, DP1 has A+ sound, and B playin'. DP2 has B sound and A+ playin'. Can't wait to see what the next release is, keep up the good work Rhino team. By the way, I don't get the numbering. DP1 was #10250 or something close, DP2 is #369. It would be cool to get the same number every time (in the order that you subscribed), but with all the Customer Care nightmares I keep reading about (I personally have never had one) that doesn't even sound like a possibility worth considering.

    1974 recordings
I have just gone through disc 1 of Dave's Picks Vol.2. First of all, really nice packaging, nice front cover, nice booklet, nice liner notes, nice bonus disc cover, congratulation to the Grateful Dead Art Department this time.Regarding music, we all know that the Dead were at the top of their game in 1974. It is, without a doubt, one of my favorite years, it must have been amazing being at one of those shows in front of that imponent Wall of Sound. And that`s the point: the recordings simply can´t capture that state-of-the-art hi-fi P.A. Of course, the Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack is the exception, for those multitrack recordings sound simply amazing (not on Steal Your Face, though!). But, this two-track documents are not the case. I know Jeffrey Norman surely gave his best to enhance the recording for this new release, but we can't expect for miracles when he is working with a tape that was already mixed to stereo by Candelario, who was doing his best anyway, but while being busy doing other things on stage. He was not there just to record the band and, above all, WAS NOT WORKING ON TAPES CONSIDERED FOR FUTURE RELEASES, for the real aim was documenting the show so band could listen to it later in order to evaluate their performance (I don't know if that was put in practice, anyway). Don't get me wrong, this release features amazing music, but I can`t help thinking about how much enjoyable this could be having been recorded in a different way. In this recording the vocals suffer a lot because of the phase-cancellation microphones, and with a two-track recording there is nothing you can do to try to make it sound better. Furthermore, the drums are placed in the middle, without stereo panning, the mix is not always balanced, there is saturation, the sound is dry (except for Jerry's guitar that features reverb) etc. etc. I insist, there's no one to blame for this, and I was not waiting anything different from this release, I know the way 1974 recordings sound like, I just can't help thinking, that's all... Anyway, a really nice release, keep them coming!

Check out the guy in the dead middle of the photo when you open the case, white shirt, the split in the photo goes right through him, hold it together, look at him, on the right side, I swear it looks like he is on a cell phone. Time bender? or just deep in thought? ???:)Plus everyone seems to be eating satay on a stick. No $1 grilled cheese? Bonus disc is a real treat. I had forgotten; Phil with a beard, acrobatics on the WOS, $6.50 tickets, wow, thank you! Just a thought. more people saw this live than were able to buy the discs. Does making it exclusive enhance our enjoyment? The collector angle just seems contrary to the vibe when I got on the bus. Make money, no problem with that, but why create the greedy scene and enable the ebay pigs? "without love in a dream it will never come true" "you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind." Still grateful for the chance to enjoy all this great music, happy for a '74 show. Thanks.

It is good, Maybe not great .... The people paying that, are heads that just missed, thinking they wouldn't sell out a single release and when it is sold out, they feel like they missed something special. Therefore they are willing to pay top dollar for what they perceive they missed.. Because lets face it you can still buy all the dick's picks, and as great as most are there are some clunkers that you could pass on... This is the reason Rhino limits the distribution because it causes demand. Im sure you already know this, so its just a shame your calling other heads suckaz! Won't be passing you the pipe at the next Further show...

The Dead will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no Dead...plus the CDs sound more badass in my car than ripped files... Mind Left Body Jam is pretty sweet too...Nice Spanish Jam too...I was a bit ambivalent as the sound didn't match up to #1 but there's some neat stuff. Mexicali Blues and El Paso are nice too. The Billy drums make for a great bar band... I agree w/ the rave reviews of the bonus disc...great stuff!

...something doesn't seem right. Why limit all these to so many? I haven't been able to get any picks due to bad economic times in my life. Maybe if someone would be willing to help me out here and burn some copies of things that I've missed out on...I'd be a happy camper.

Bummer! No gig last night, and I didnt have any drum students this morning. It's a beautiful day so I was sitting on my front porch sipping some French press coffee, thinking to myself this would be a perfect day to be cranking Dave's Picks 2. (73-74 being my favorite era and not actually seeing the Wall of Sound,as my first show was in 76 at the Tower, I, as others are looking foward to this pick!) I see the mail man pull up. He starts his route, eventually getting to me. But alas, no parcel. So I figure it would be here sometime this week. It usually comes unexpected and unannounced, so the fact that it hadn't arrived yet really didn't worry me. As I was about to step inside I noticed the mail carrier return to my house holding a small package. As he was about to hand it to me he said," you're not waiting for a box of Rain, are you?" He handed it to me and asked if it was the Dave's Pick 2, and then told me that he got his yesterday. We chatted a little about some some 90's shows because that's when he started seeing them. Pretty unexpected connection and met another really nice head.So this afternoon I'll be out on the patio with a few Dogfish Head cranking up the sounds! Hope that those who haven't received it, get their sets soon! Thanks again Dave and the team for all the work that went into this release!

Hey jaxxtraw,It really does look like the guy in the center of the photo is talking on a modern (cell) mobile phone. What is this object? Anyways, a great show, even if the Phil & Ned segment isn't included. The bonus disc from 7/29/74 Cap Centre Landover is excellent.

Hey Borncrosseyed56, check out the photo link from DigiGal, Thanks, DigiGal!You can see that the guy in the middle is not on a cell phone, he is listening to Seastones on his ipod ;) Actually I don't think it's headphones at all, my guess is he's getting his head together for the show~~ many of us have been there, eh? Thanks again for a WOS show, especially for the great job with the sound which is always tricky from that setup And hello and thanks again to Marye, for helping to make this work so we can all connect and share the love.

Dave's Picks Vol. 2 and Bonus CD are great, I'm very happy with this release. I have read a lot of comments on this release, and its limitation to 12,000 copies. The reason they limit is all business, the only reason. They offer the subscription to know how many they need for sure, 12 K seemed like a solid number, but it was not, so Rhino learns from this. Dave's Pick Vol. 3 will most likely be more. Rhino wants our money, it is paramount to them. We must look at this like a popular stock being offered for sale to the public (IPO), the subscription is the best bet going. You are guaranteed a Bonus CD, all volumes and free shipping. Anything left over is up for grabs, this time it was 2500 copies. If you did not pick one up on the second public offering, well then it's your own fault. Those coming back to buy a few extra copies to sale are in it for the money, they know they can return their money two to three times, maybe more. Face it, these CD sets are valuable, they resale on Ebay for big bucks. I saw a copy of Vol. 1 go for 98 bucks last night, and a 2012 Bonus CD sold for 102 today. View From The Vault II, CD set sold for 164 bucks last year. Collectors want this stuff. I wish it were like the old days, no stress, you just ordered a copy when you wanted. In the age of corporate greed, we are in a whole new ball game. Like it or not this is how it is. Hopefully Rhino will want to take care of us Deadheads that are buying this stuff. I'll get a subscription every year it is offered. I miss the old days of customer service too when a Deadhead would answer the phone and knew exactly what to do for you. Today we get run around in circles and fed bad information. It is, what it is. Keep jamming. CP

I am taking a break from the electric and put on some Jerry pick'in the 'ol five string. I hope another complete show is released. I know Bear recorded the entire tour. I am not sure if David Grisman is the only one who can release this stuff or if Jerry's family or Rhino. Not enough banjo for sure!! What show has Jerry pick'in the banjo (as seen on Grateful Dawg Movie) in front of the Wall of Sound with David Grisman? I assume they were opening for the Grateful Dead in March or April of '74. I wonder id David sat in on a song or two. Does anybody know?

I'm STILL waiting for my set...so much for my "subscribing" being the way to get my discs before most anybody else...honestly, it's total garbage that this new set is selling on Ebay BEFORE I even get mine in the mailbox. As a subscriber, why shouldn't I get my discs before somebody that decides to purchase right at the last second? And yes, I have a somewhat bitter taste about this whole affair in my mouth...

Normally I would be complaining and accusing Rhino of just trying to make another buck. I do not think that's the labels main focus. The facts are that it costs money to put these projects together. There’s the legal stuff, having the discs pressed, printed, create quality colorful booklets with photos, digipacks and quality CD trays that hold the discs securely during transit and also won't scuff the discs if handled properly. Rhino also hires live humans to assemble and insert each CD in each tray. How many of us prefer the trays instead of the previous method used? I know I do and especially because I like to take care of my discs. Rhino also has to hire a shipping crew who this time I would like to compliment since my paid for copy arrived in a cardboard box that was the correct size and had thick foam padding on the bottom of the box and digi and another properly cut piece of foam on top that also wrapped around the sides of the digi and protected it from arriving damaged. My copy arrived yesterday and I'm siting here listening as type. Once the recording equipment , and band get adjusted, I'm hearing a clean and balanced soundboard with great detail… The show starts to gain momentum early in the first set and never slows down. I'm having a very difficult time sitting still while trying to gather my thoughts and write something that fans can relate to. All I wanna do is get up and dance. LOL!! Some of the highlights for me are Big River, Eyes Of The World, (Check Out Phil On This One)! , and basically all three sets folks!! Jerry sounds great!!! I’m halfway through the 2nd spin and might just have to listen to this one again tonight. I can’t wait for the MFSL vinyl release of Mar’s Hotel that will hopefully be released soon. Those who are disappointed that they either couldn’t afford this or waited too long, remember it’s all about the music folks and I remember when I was a teenager many of my friends were happy if they had dubbed cassette copies of the shows period. Today music fans are fortunate that we can at least have a digital copy w/out hiss and generation loss. Try and feel Grateful that 12,000 fans were willing to shell out the money necessary to help cover the costs of this one and hopefully many other future releases. Please keep them coming Dave, Rhino, and everyone else who made this happen. One fans opinion. LedMan

...the one with the snout will be looking back at you. Sorry people I wasn't going to stoop to his level but sometimes...The millions of people who buy and sell freely on eBay with no gun to their head are not pigs but people who are making a living (show me an independant record or book store that isn't on eBay and I'll show you one that is out of bussiness) or wish to have something from their childhood for their stamp or coin collection or.. me who was working on RSD and couldn't get to a store for the Dark Star lp. Yes I paid a premium such is life. Envy and jealousy are ugly things especially when you had numerous chances to order from the site. On a more pleasant note Coconut Phil gets it. It's not about the evil Rhino ripping us off but about getting the numbers right making 30,000 for a 15,000 demand is expensive and will lead to less product or something many of us don't want- download only releases. Again I apologise for this rant but ignorance isn't bliss and needs to be countered

Gotta say, I love the packaging! The 2 panel photo in the fold-out is a great shot of lucky concertgoers chilling before the gates opened. Then when you open the whole 4 panel job it's a three panel panorama of the stage and one close-up of a beardless Garcia singing and strumming The Wolf.. Sound starts off with no low-end, but gradually gets better as set progresses. By Half Step, the band starts to find the groove. That's as far as I got. Looking fwd to hearing the rest.

Sheesh, the thing started being delivered, what, about three days ago? And there's a bunch of whiners complaining that they STILL don't have it in their hot little hand. The only way to make this group happy would be for GDM to fill all 12,000 orders on the same day and have them all delivered on the same day. Oh wait, then the complainers would be saying, "I haven't gotten my mail delivery yet, but others already got it. I'm gonna be pissed if it isn't there." Some of you make me ashamed to admit enjoying the same music you do.

Syracuse78 I was simply stating a fact. You've passed judgement and formed an opinion based on what? Very little. I'm sorry you feel compelled to insult some of the people who have posted their concern over the shipping and handling of Dave's Picks V2. You *certainly* are judge and jury and *clearly* know better. Perhaps I'm ashamed to admit that I enjoy the same music you do. Nah. I supect your comment wasn't well though through. It's better to forgive. Now, I suspect you'll come back with some witty reply. Rest assured I don't care. Deal with that anger though. It's not healthy. If you're working in the GDM shipping department I could understand the stress you're under. Otherwise I think not.

My delivery confirmation said delivery can take up to 12 days. No where did it say subscribers get their orders before anyone else. Even more reason to have a member's only club though. If I were Dave/Rhino I would be taking some serious notes for the Subscription 2013. They should take the same stance as amazon's pre-order. You pay 2nd day delivery and it will be in your hands the day of the release.

...my comment had nothing to do with you. As judgmental as I am, I can comprehend "Hasn't arrived here yet" and recognize that there is no complaint there. I was more responding to comments like: "Will never understand how things from dead.net take so long." "I'm STILL waiting for my set...so much for my "subscribing" being the way to get my discs before most anybody else...honestly, it's total garbage that this new set is selling on Ebay BEFORE I even get mine in the mailbox." I will admit that when I looked back at what I consider to be whiny posts, there were less than I remembered. My apologies for harshing your mellow.

I'm in Wisconsin and mine arrived (#2295) on Saturday - - I'm thinking since it was coming from California the folks closer to that side of the country are getting them earlier, and they're working their way east. A side note, I was worried a little 'cause I was experiencing a skip at the start of Big River (about 30 seconds in boy did my stomach drop), but it was sporadic and I have not been able to replicate it on other players so I'm thinking it's my player.

ya know Syracuse, Of all the things in this world to get upset over, a couple of posts on dead.net by people who are impatient to hear some music really aren't anywhere near the top of the list. If you're sick of it, don't read the posts. Simple solution.

I never got a shipping e-mail- and my mailbox empty as of saturday- but today found a little box at my apartment door. I've been blissing out ever since. A great and inspired choice Dave! How about some 1967 next?!

Hey there everyone, Finally got mine today. Relieved and enjoying this a bunch. This appears to be a huge show. Taking it in slowly and appreciatively as I've heard this show before but not at this quality. Truckin' jam is one for the ages for sure. My thoughts turn to volume 3 like many of you. I think our hints come from Dave's giveawaysfrom last November. Lazy Lightning 5.25.77 and Wharf Rat 7.29.74 both predicted vol. 1 and 2 releases. I have to say, both of those songs were stand outs in November so I'm inclined to predict vol. 3 will come from that batch. My guess, for what it's worth, If it's from 70s, I'm guessing 6.10.73 (birdsong flew!) If it's from 60s, I'm guessing 10.22.67 (new potato giveaway was engaging!) If it's from 80s, I'm guessing 6.26.84 (looks like rain!) I don't think the 90s will be chosen. But, who knows. Enjoy Vol. 2 everyone.

The way I see it, Syracuse is talking about a little gratitude and a little perspective. You defend the freedom of speech to impatiently complain about waiting a couple days for music that just came out, but condemn another's freely spoken impatience with such complaints. Where's your own patience? You don't need to read the posts either, if Sycracuse's words offend you. Syracuse, I'm with you. No matter what gets released, when, there's always something to complain about. Complete THREE SET '74 show, hmm, let's see, we can still whine about Seastones (even though it's still available for free on the Archive....but I want REMASTERED Seastones, daddy! And I want it NOW!). What will it be next time, they didn't include the crowd chatter between sets? (Remember, our energy was always part of every show ~ why aren't our voices being represented on these releases?) I'm weary of it, too. And I have a right to stand up for Dave, GD, and, yes, even Rhino, and say THANK YOU for all the releases over the years, THANK YOU for keeping them cost effective, THANK YOU for continuing to try every which way to keep them coming, THANK YOU for the most releases from any band EVER, SORRY that complaint posts outweigh the good cheer on just about every release for the last several years, and THANKS for putting out something positive in very dark times. My apologies for venting.

Dave's Picks Vol 2 made it to Australia in record time, perfectly packaged and with a wonderful bonus disc to accompany it. To those folks who think the sun don't shine on their back door, I want to thank the folks at Rhino and Dead.net. I can't complain about the sound, the pitch, the missing song that someone may have sang on the way to the toilet, the booklet, the discs, the set list, the lack of Jerry's facial hair ... May those who complain about the incredible array of releases we keep getting be forced to live under Mitt Romney's chin and listen to Queen.

The packaging is excellent, such a huge improvement from Road Trips. And the Bonus Disc is a sweet bunch of perfectly played selections, Thanks again. I remember hearing how much time is put into selecting the material for the releases, and it shows. Continuing on with the excellent Volume Two, and a brillant beginning to the new series...

I am keeping my fingers crossed that my DP2 will arrive today in the Bay Area. If it made it down under to our friends in Australia you would think they could get it to the folks in the Bay. It's going to be great when ever it arrives. It's like Christmas in May. Keep em coming! Thanks for all you guys do for us.
