Listening to last year's expanded re-issues of Bob Mould's short-lived second band, Sugar. "Copper Blue" is a solid album, starting off with a heavy punch to the gut but goes out with a bit of a whimper. The second, live disc is where this expanded edition really shines. While the songs on "File Under: Easy Listening" don't pack as much visceral power as the hard rockers on "Copper Blue," I feel that it is overall a more balanced record. Really, the live discs on both of these re-issues make buying the expanded editions worth your money. I snagged 'em both when they were just $5 apiece from Amazon, so I'm missing the re-issue of the E.P. "Beaster" that comes with the CD/LP version of "Copper Blue," but I plan to eventually get both these albums on vinyl. If you're a fan of Bob Mould's work and have never listened to Sugar, get these albums. Like, now.

Happy New Year Vol 1 A compilation of live tracks from 2012. A definite goosebumps moment on "Phoenix Story/Mr Bojangles." I'll not do it justice, it must be heard, but here's the gist: Todd is a big fan of Jerry Jeff Walker. One night in Phoenix the two of them closed down a bar and were wandering back to their hotel. Heard a tune, walked around a corner to investigate, there's a guy on a street corner at 3 am singing Mr Bojangles to nobody. Todd and Jerry Jeff stop and listen, Todd's mind racing ("Should I tell this guy, does he even know who this is?"). Song ends, Jerry Jeff throws some money in the hat and they go on their way. The story segues into the intro to Mr Bojangles, the crowd cheers, and the intro just goes on for a while. The crowd suddenly goes wild, very wild, and the first verse starts...Jerry Jeff singing. Pretty sweet...

In the mood this morning to listen to Paul "H.R." Hudson's other band, H.R. (a.k.a.: Human Rights). A rather big leap away from the thrashing, smashing, and screaming of Bad Brains, I have most but not all of his solo albums. More to the point, I have his SST releases and his most recent album, 'Hey Wella', but don't have any of the early '90s or early '00s records. And since I'm a bit of an O.C.D. stickler when it comes to listen to an artist's complete catalogue, I'm listening to the albums in chronological order:- 'Human Rights' - 'Singin' in the Heart' - 'H.R. Tapes '84-'86: It's About Love/Keep out of Reach' - 'Charge' - 'Hey Wella' plus the album's two singles, "Didn't I Tell You" and "Hey Wella" You can also get a CD of the band's latest tour, which features members of Fishbone and Suicidal Tendencies (if you're into that kind of stuff) as well as a limited edition split 45" with Valient Thorr and some other goodies through the band's Facebook page, "HR Human Rights."

5/13/72 Lille Fairgrounds Lille, France Just listening to Jerry sing the chorus of Loser - with a sweet Suzie for good measure - and marveling at his great voice. And then he rips his all-about-the-nuance solo, flirting with harmonics all the while - so sweet! Sure's good to be alive in the middle of May!!! Ain't it?

I found a used copy of this box (for umm$) but I am loving it. I am currently on the 2nd show and the Dark Star is getting really spooky. This sound quality is amazing too. I absolutely can't get enough of the DaP 6 too. I think the 2/2/70 is a better but its all on fire to my ears...especially the Eleven>New Speedway Boogie. 1st one ever...what a great snapshot in history! I love it. DaP 6 is actually what made me break down and get the FW 69 complete...

Badger, I hadn't heard of them either, saw them opening for Drive-By Truckers last fall. They came out playing "Hold On" ... I was dancing almost immediately and did not stop until they left the stage, which is saying something for these old bones. And I walked away with a memento: something frisbee'd from the stage to the crowd at the end of the show -- a setlist written on a paper plate, ended up in my hands.

of WBGO fm since I've been spending a LOT of time in cars lately and they broadcast in my local market, as well as online at www.wbgo.org. If you fancy a jazz fix and can pry yourselves away from the Dead channel on SiriusXM or gdradio.com they are a reliable fix. Even heard them track a selection from the recent David Bromberg/Levon Helm collaboration during the Blues hour (3-4pm ET) as a nod to Levon. Just making a suggestion. If your mother doesn't like it tell her to write her Congressman...

Dr John -- Locked Down Justin Townes Earle -- Nothing's Going to Change the Way You Feel About Me Now I had an expensive day at Record Store Day last weekend...but didn't make it there in time to grab one of three copies of the vinyl Dark Star. But I was there in plenty of time to empty my wallet.

Generally those freebie record company compilation cds are very hit-and-miss -- stuff you love jammed up against stuff you hate, at least in my experience. But...this time through I grabbed a New West Records collection of NPR "World Cafe" live selections, and with a couple of a handfuls of my favorites (Buddy Miller, Steve Earle, Old 97's, Drive-By Truckers, Jason Isbell, The Flatlanders, Tom Morello, Mark Olson & Gary Louris, and more), it was hard to go wrong. I might even give this one a second spin.. Mamas and Grandmamas love you 'Cause that's all they know how to do But you never planned on those bombs in the sand Or sleeping in your dress blues. -Jason Isbell

Grateful Dead Musikhalle 4/29/72 1st set (I cheated again ...) Coleman Hawkins "1929-1937" 4/28/37 (Honeysuckle Rose w/ a taste of Django even) Bennie Green "Soul Stirrin'" 4/28/58 ballsy Lee Morgan "Leeway" 4/28/60 I guess I could force myself to listen to Fillmore East, 4/28/71 with a nice NRPS set - hmmmm ... "From day to day, just lettin' it ride. You get so far away from how it feels inside. You can't let go, 'cause you're afraid to fall. But the day may come when you can't feel at all."

Despite the dearth of jams, and despite the WOS vocals that sometimes seem to slice right through my head (I've got a fair amount of higher-frequency hearing loss; you'd think that these sibilant vox would help compensate for my hearing deficiencies, but no, instead they sometimes edge over into white noise territory for me-- a little unpleasant), I'm very much enjoying this one.

Sirius XM, just caught the tail end of 4/28/71, Fillmore East. St Stephen > NFA > GDTRFB > NFA Going Down the Road features an additional verse: I'm going where those chilly winds don't blow I'm going where those chilly winds don't blow Going where those chilly winds don't blow Don't want to be treated this way. The first time I heard this, I thought that Jerry was singing "I'm going where those shitty winds don't blow." And maybe he was. But probably not.

Beatles -- Magical Mystery Tour. Not exactly a favorite Beatles album, but I've always loved the non-album singles that Capitol included on the US (now the "standard") LP version of MMT. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever was the first record that I ever bought, it's still one of the best double A-side singles that I've ever heard. I ran into a "40 best albums released in 1967" list just a little bit ago. I didn't start buying albums until 1969 (too young, no money), so it was a little surprising to me that I had a goodly number of these sitting on my shelf, most in vinyl, and most in vinyl AND CD. A pretty good year, I think: Grateful Dead -- Grateful Dead Beatles -- Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Magical Mystery Tour Jimi Hendrix Experience -- Are You Experienced? Axis: Bold As Love Doors -- The Doors Strange Days Rolling Stones -- Between the Buttons Jefferson Airplane -- Surrealistic Pillow After Bathing at Baxter's Moby Grape -- Moby Grape Big Brother and the Holding Company -- Big Brother and the Holding Company Pink Floyd -- Piper at the Gates of Dawn Byrds -- Younger Than Yesterday Aretha Franklin -- I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You Velvet Underground -- VU and Nico Cream -- Disraeli Gears Arlo Guthrie -- Alice's Restaurant Moody Blues -- Days of Future Passed Bob Dylan -- John Wesley Harding The Who -- The Who Sell Out Donovan -- Mellow Yellow Otis Redding and Carla Thomas -- King and Queen (and by the way, RIP "Duck" Dunn) Buffalo Springfield Again

The 23rd is a revelation. Own this or the odds may never be in your favor! The 24th is a struggle - Jerry's darn g-string gives him fits repeatedly! But there are plenty of shining moments, including those that wound up on Europe '72. The 25th is back to position "A". I'm listening to it now and, yes, the Feelin' Groovy is as good as it gets. How can this still be so amazing after 40 years? The 26th. We know this one. It knows us. Thank you, powers that be. And thank you to my fam for allowing me the spac e to listen to all this magic. Gloryland Not new, but new to me -- the artist, that is. Checking him out in advance of seeing him open for Todd Snider in a few weeks. What I'm hearing from the album reminds me at times of James McMurtry, of Todd Snider, of Dave Alvin, of Steve Earle. Roosty rocking, great lyrics. The album was recorded in 2009, mixed/mastered in 2010, the copyright says 2012. What took so long? In the DIY land of what passes for today's music business (see this article by David Lowery, long but worth the time: http://thetrichordist.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/meet-the-new-boss-worse-… If you need a reason to support your favorite artists with your dollars, this should drive home the why of it), it probably took that long for Gordon to be able to afford to release the album. And in true DIY fashion, when you order the CD from his website, Gordon signs it for you, personalized if you wish. Not just once, mind you: signed the digipak, the CD itself, and an insert. Nice. And to echo Guitarman: RIP Doc Watson.

Just started set 2, via the archive. The version I'm listening to is a SBD/AUD composite, but its such a great show that I didn't try to fine a full SBD to listen to! I suggest giving it a listen.
