DAVE’S PICKS VOL.3 FEATURES SHOWS FROM KEITH’S FIRST TOUR!

This product is officially SOLD OUT. Stay tuned for news on Dave's Picks Volume 4.

In all the years that archival Grateful Dead recordings have been coming out, there have been just three from the red-hot fall of 1971, Keith Godchaux’s landmark first tour with the band. Those would be Dick’s Picks Vol. 2, a rippin’ single-disc release of the second set of the group’s Halloween show at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Download Series Vol. 3 from the 10/26 Rochester show and Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 2 from November 15, 1971 in Austin, Texas. Now there is a fourth: Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 features the complete October 22, 1971 concert from the beautiful Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on two discs, with a third disc culled from the previous night’s scorcher at the same venue.

Keith came into the band in mid-September ’71, at a time when Pigpen was desperately ill and the band was hungering for something new to help fill out their sound. A sparkling pianist, Keith was a complete unknown at the time, yet, miraculously it seemed, fit in with the Dead immediately. The live “Skull & Roses” double-album (recorded in the winter-spring of ’71) had just come out, and the band was still enjoying a surge of unprecedented popularity since Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty were released the previous year. They were on a roll!

Never ones to rest on their laurels, however, the band continued their torrid pace of introducing new songs: “Sugaree” and “Brown-Eyed Women” first appeared in the summer of ’71, and that fall, when the band with Keith hit the road, starting out in Minneapolis (10/19) and then moving on to Chicago (10/21-22), they had a whole bunch of other freshly minted tunes waiting to be born—“Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Ramble On Rose,” “Comes A Time” and “One More Saturday Night,” all of which appear on this set.

The sparkle and verve that Keith brought to the band is immediately apparent, as he tears through rockers and bouncy mid-tempo numbers with the confidence of someone who had been playing this music forever. If the quiet keyboardist was nervous or unsure of himself on this first jaunt, it certainly wasn’t apparent. And you can feel the electricity in the rest of the band, as Jerry, Phil, Bob and Bill absorb and play off of the amazingly inventive musings of their new recruit. Of course Pigpen’s absence was deeply felt (and the band acknowledged it at every stop), but Keith’s entrance was so seamless and the energy he injected into the music so impressive, the group didn’t appear to lose any of the momentum they had been building tour after tour.

The songs are a blend of old, still-recent (from Workingman’s Dead on) and brand-new. One forgets that crowd-pleasers such as “Bertha,” “Deal” and “Playing in the Band” had come into the repertoire only eight months earlier, and “Truckin’” and “Sugar Magnolia” were just over a year old. Even a bunch of the cover tunes were relatively recent additions—“Big Railroad Blues,” “Me & Bobby McGee” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Keith handles all of those (and earlier chestnuts like “Cold Rain and Snow” and “Beat It On Down the Line”) with his characteristic aplomb, but perhaps most impressive is how he fares on the Dead’s big jamming numbers. On Disc Two, you’ll hear his thoughtful and inventive contributions to a truly stellar, 29-minute version of “That’s It for the Other One.” And on Disc Three (from 10/21), listen to him as he navigates through a spectacular “Dark Star,” which is split by a spirited romp through “Sitting on Top of the World.” The encore of 10/21 also features the first of only three “old school” (pre-hiatus) versions of “St. Stephen” Keith played on.

Most of the 12,000 limited edition copies of Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 are already spoken for by subscribers to the series, but there are a still a few thousand available through Dead.net only. These will definitely sell out—and fast—so if you want make sure you get your copy, order today! As always, the 3-CD set has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman from the original vault reels, and the eco-friendly Digipak includes a booklet with an essay about the show and, in this case, some very cool photos of the interior of Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre. For the complete song lists and ordering info, click here.

If I don't have an order number, is it still possible to find out if mine has shipped with my mailing address Marye? As I mentioned in my previous post, my subscription was purchased as a gift for me. The reciepts/packing slips that came with my first two Dave's Picks don't have the the order number on them. Just the product number, product name and quantity.

I am also a subscriber. Interesting to note that the profiteers already have their wares up on Amazon. An opened (ripped of coarse) copy appears for $48 up to $110, for a sealed copy. No shortage on ebay either.

I also received notice that my copy had shipped on the 30th of July. Still nothing. Getting worried, and anxious. This concert means a lot to me, and even though I am a relative newbe to the site I would sure hate to miss out on receiving my copy. Looking forward to listening and remembering. Any help on tracking down this problem that a lot of people are having would be appreciated.

Nice lady at Dead.net told me that many of them hadn't actually shipped even though shipping confirmation went out. That's the part that made me worry - that it was sent on 8-1 but still hadn't arrived. So now back to patiently waiting. As opposed to camping at the mailbox.

My came To north GA on Saturday. Good news is that what I've heard sounds great! Bad news is that mine only came with disc 1 and disc 3. Disc 2 spot was empty. Thankfully Marye is attempting to help me get Disc 2. Thanks again! These Dave's picks have all been home runs in my opinion! Can't wait for spring 1990

My copy just arrived sometime today! Perhaps Judd's explanation is what was happening. It was very weird. I just don't quite understand in what sequence they are picking the order. Not that I really care what number i got, but mine was #8615 this time around and previous numbers were much lower. The important thing is I am now breathing easier knowing I don't have to clamor to find a third party seller for these at seventy bucks. So right now I'm on Jack Straw and i am noticing that Keith is much higher in the mix than most other releases, making it real easy to pick out his chord voicing and embellishments.I personally dig this. I'm really enjoying this release! Thanks again, Dave and Co. Thanks again Marye for coming to our assistance once again. Looking forward to the next installment of Dave's Picks and the 1990 Box! PS, Generally, Im having a lot of trouble logging on and posting.

These are taking unusually long to ship. Odd how a person recieved their non-suscription copy before their subscription copy. MaryE is looking into it for me. Between this and a substantially high number of the Road Trips releases, I've had to inquire about the shipments of my orders quite often. MaryE deserves a raise.

Thanks Dave, crew, and Rhino, it's been a spectacular debut year - and still not done! I'm listening to this show/these shows in chronological order now (disc 3 followed by discs 1 & 2), and I gotta say...this just might be the best of Dave's Picks so far. Vol. 1 was pretty killer, but this one just about beats it on down the line. The piano parts are an especially lovely treat. Think I should listen to them all in order, though, once I've given this one another spin. Just got a new computer with lots more memory, so now I can actually load up my 120 GB iPod to capacity. Speaking of Dave's Picks, has anyone else experienced any glitches/skipping on disc # 3 of vol. 2? It's about a minute or so into the last song, "Uncle John's Band"--my favorite take of the song to date--and even though I've re-ripped the CD and played it on numerous CD players, it's still there. My receipt is buried somewhere amongst my CD and vinyl collection, but how do I go about fixing/replacing that last disc? Heck, I'd even go for a clean download of the song; the rest of the CD is fine, and the glitch/skip isn't as noticeable when I play the CD. Anyway, keep 'em coming, Dave! You've yet to pick a dud, bud! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I contacted customer service about the issue with disc # 3 of Dave's Picks, Vol. 2, and they're working on it. Hopefully all my brothers and sisters out there in the cosmos will get their copies of Vol. 3 soon.

I have to say I'm loving hearing this show again after so many years! This was my second Dead show and second at the Auditorium and I've always remembered it fondly so it's extra sweet to hear it again. the only exception I'd take is Blair calling the ushers facistic in his liner notes. I just remember them trying to protect a lovely building from some of our more thoughtless friends. Sounds great, though!

We are the luckiest fans in the world by far in my opinion - so much treasure. I am truly grateful to Rhino/GD for making these high quality releases available for those who chose to support it (and even those who can't currently justify spending money on music that can be found easily for free without GD seeming to mind much). Nevertheless, it would sure be nice if there was some open communication about snafu's such as these. Something as simple as an official acknowledgement that subscribers are not getting their orders delivered as quickly as expected and that we should now expect our order no later than xx/xx/xxxx. Or anything really.

My wife and I are both subscribers. We received our copies today. My wife received an e-mail with a shipping notice of July, 31. Mine was August 1. I do NOT believe they were shipped on these dates, no way. The boxes did not have any dates at all. No way it took 15 days, even Media mail would not have taken that long. They really screwed up again, it really is disappointing to us both. The folks at Dead.net are like programed robots reading off cards. I look for a automated system soon. On the other side of the coin, Spring 90 has folks on duty 24/7 to answer any concern. I really hope its not September 16 before my box arrives. I ordered a poster and a few stickers, so the S&H was over 20 bucks, that is more then enough for priority mail. I love the Dead, love the music, but really disappointed in the service we are receiving lately. The music is great. Hope every one will have their copies today. Phil

I am a subscriber, and rec'd my confirmation email stating it was shipped on July 30 - still have not received it. My guess as others who have posted say the confirmation ship date, is not the actual mail date. If that's the case, what's the point of the email in the 1st place p.s. i got a package (non -dead) shipped from Long Beach, CA on Aug 6 and it came yesterday on Aug 14 via regular internation US mail . ** Can't wait for the Spring 90 Box ** thanks

Every mailorder release grows a lengthy thread of "mine isn't here yet" posts. Some member names have become very familiar. These people have come to believe that GDM is incompetent. Our experiences vary. All my orders over the years have come promptly and been correct. All my discs have been without flaws. To any GDMers who have to read these threads: Thanks! You have been making me happy! You are doing something right! Anyone else been so lucky?

In the past I've gotten ship emails a week or two AFTER I received the order. This time, it was a week or two BEFORE the package arrived. I'm guessing that it will all even out in the end. Based on this experience, it appears that there is no correlation between the ship notification and the actual package ship date, so we can all just ignore that email that we all got, especially as there is no tracking info despite the tracking link. So how large an operation do you think that this particular fulfillment center is? 12,000 copies going to 11,000 or so addresses all at once: is it a day's work for this place? Or a week's work? Or more?

Hard to believe 40-year-old two-track tapes can sound this good. I applaud the decision to leave the tape hiss in--taking it out always takes some of the music too. ... and the music is something indeed. The energetic joy in playing and singing, a feeling of self astonishment, the routine achievement of the impossible, beyond style or genre or objective comparison. Thanks!!

The anticipation is too much. Some good ol '71. Thanks for fixing the glitches (or whatever it was.) I couldn't log in for a week, and some of the links on the home page weren't working right. It's fine now though. Anyone else experience these same problems?
