    A new aproach
I tried something new and took 5 uninitiated friends to this show...they had no idea what they were in for LOL...After the worlds longest 3 mile drive from the highway to the stadium we made camp. The girls ( Janine,Helene, and Smurffet ) and I went off to do a little "shopping" We found a guy with some huge nitrous bottles in the back of a van, driving to Foxboro the girls were reluctant to smoke a little weed, but now they seemed determined to suck up all the nitrous in Massachusets. Meanwhile back at home camp Mark and Henry had scored some schrooms, Mark was a longtime Zappa fan so he had a idea what he was in for, just not on the scale the Dead would provide. Once inside I think they realize we were talking about things happining on a biblical proportion! The show itself was unfreakinbelievable, great set list, you couldn't ask for a better second set. I remember during the drums on the big screens there was some kind of rubber baby doll head making these wicked tourtured faces, I thought it was a little weird but the girls who were still sucking up nitro were pretty freaked out by it. All in all a great day/night spent with good friends. It's been almost 20 years but every time we get together we still talk about that day.

What I remember about this show was the drive in to the parking lot. It was backed up a few miles and not moving. People got out of their cars (because we weren't moving) and set up bars on their hoods. We partied like rock stars before we even got inside. The show and set list was amazing. My brother's girlfiend was with us and she told me that day she regarded herself as a 'Brenthead' because he was such a phenomenal singer that we felt had been hidden for years. Super-hot day in the relentless Massachussets sun. . . Edie Brickell opened and got a little more loudness than than in DC two days before. . . at the break, there were so many people trying to get down onto the main (GA) floor, that security eventually moved the barricades right up against the wall so whoever wanted to jump down could do so without getting hurt. After the initial flood of people moved down, they put the barriers back in place with a gap between the seating area and the floor. . . I recall the break music between the New Bohemians set and the Dead's including Norwegian Wood (She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere, So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair!) First set was hot, if a tad sloppy, during FAR FROM ME, on the backing vocal "SO LONG" part I was unconsciously waving bye bye to Brent. . . He had been rather intense the whole tour, and this felt like a goodbye to all the northeast heads. Eerie foreshadowing! Candyman was powerful, the crowd went nuts for the IF I HAD ME A SHOTGUN I'D BLOW YOU STRAIGHT TO HELL line, which I thought was pretty creepy. . . When they get back to Memphis there'll be one less man alive. . . next tune was MEMPHIS BLUES! (Sure enough, they didn't actually return to Memphis until the Pyramid shows in 1995, and one less of them was alive for those gigs in the gigantic tomb!) I remember thinking to myself during this show, that the difference between a soundboard and audience tape would be pretty intense. . . the audience tape captures the sound of the crowd like one more instrument, the board tape recreates the stage sound on the "PA system" where it's played back, and could make for a very different impression. This was one of the events which let me to become very interested in what I call "soundscape preservation", wherein I like to capture what actually happened for posterity. Board tapes are neat too, but as historic documents, the audience sound is what 80,000 people heard! Second set was a big jam-out, I don't remember too much as a highlight, but the double encore (only one of the summer) of THIS COULD BE THE LAST TIME WE BID YOU GOODNIGHT was pretty epic. . . And it WAS the last time they bade goodnight to New England with Mr Mydland. . . ". . . Music is the best!" (fz)

It seemed to take an eternity to get to this place after the DC show. We were lucky, we arrived before all the back log of traffic. One of the few shows that I didn't have a ticket for and I searched and searched with no success. Everyone started heading toward the show, it was time. I stood around and watched insanity going on. Some jerk just ripped someone's tickets of their hands and walked in the show. It was chaos where I was, lucky for me because of the chaos I was able to simply walk right into the show without a ticket. It was like I was invisible. I had to walk through a turn-style and then through another line of people checking tickets and no one saw me. Of course I was giddy once I realized I was successful and then ran into the show. I sat down next to a girl name Heather (who told me about Phish) who was a Brenthead and told me that she had just walked in too. I imagine we weren't the only 2 that were able to do walk in that day. She was thrilled with the Brent material which made me appreciate his singing more. I was sad for my friend who I believed did not get in until I heard the GDTRFB and knew that she too had made her way into the show. Fun stuff.

Well I met the beautiful man from San Fran again....he and his tour-mate hooked me up with a ride to the Buffalo show...it was nice after being cramped, five of us in a car for many hours. Show was wonderful especially since I hooked up with some old friends whom I hadn't seen in awhile.

Brought my 11 year old son, Stephen, to his first show. Had to advise him that he was too young to take the "Flintstones" vitamins he was offered my our seat mates. Had a really good time. Now 29 year old son is a music nut. Still go to shows with him.

Wow! What an expereince for a west coast head! I had never seen a show on the east coast before until this day, and I was amazed at the intensity of the crowd. Also saw some wierd stuff, like folks selling bad doses and the whole "take a step back" that didn't really work. I remember sitting in the middle of the stadium looking down at the playing field and seeing hoards of people jumping 10' down to the field from all sides to get closer. We were glad to be in the seats! We were trippin' and my buddies were facinated with my nalgene bottle...they kept running around the staium to fill it with water! The crowd went nuts with Shakedown and what a second set! My only WBYG and a way to remember Brent on a high note.

She stood next to him as he sang I Will Take You Home looking right at her. Touching and ultimately tragic. I was 17 years old then,, and now a father. That memory haunts me. It was the last I saw or heard him. Bid You Goodnight was appropriate.

This day was one of the best days of my life... probably the best, I was with a group of great people and met a ton more. I can still feel the first chord of Shakedown in my chest. The entire day was fantastic...even the traffic jam getting in was three miles of fun. It really should be released on video, I agree. If only out of respect for Brent.

Said Armadillo arrived eve before show with jessica in tow. Slept crouped up on two cushions. Did manage some delicious sweet coefee for the ride in. Armadillo had scoped out the venue and had a phenomenal back root in. Took us 20 minutes from the slowdown. It got hot, hot, HOT in the afternoon. Summer of 88 in new England had a 95 deg plus 3 month run....and always the HUMIDITY. I had been major lonely and depressed that year which made the scene into a huge relief. As usual drank too much beer with the Armadillo and Jessica. Can still see jessica, "The Babbling Babe." slurping beer, smoking, grinning and.......yes.....babbling. Spent a good while up at the nitrous line after finding well cured shrooms. First set was lots of fun. Remember jess slipping a ticket through the chainlink fence so I could get a seat. Ramble on rose was tasty. The One mor saturday night twisted my head round and thought....at least it won't be the encore. Sun setting as band returned for the second set with a fair, nearly dry breeze, felt such a relief from the intrepid heat. Eyes sounded at the get go like the old not fade jam into gdtrfb from 71 but then it was eyes and a magical, organic, bioluminescent moment which I will never forget. Drums were long strange and delicious with wierd ladies bundling sticks and the Armadillo giggling. Loved the encore with "Last time," having me wonder how long the scene would last, and how long I would last. on goodnight thought Jerry sang "Tell everyone in wonderful Boston!" We bid you.......

It's been a long road since this show. I am so happy to see it listed here. It was so special for so many reasons. But I will never forget I will take you home to his daughter especially because, well, the obvious. I was so young and I felt this song all the way home to my dad at the time. I am so happy to have heard this again. The shows after that were sooo sad especially at the MSG. Not the same but.. different.

There was an awful traffic jam leading up to the arena. The van full of folks I had been traveling with since the show in Pittsburgh had arrived late, and it looked like we were going to miss the start of the show. Myself and one of the girls in the van already had tickets and decided we were going to bail the van and run to the gates so we wouldn't miss the show.

I ran out of the van and left behind my shoes, my clothes, and everything else I had with me, assuring my friends I would find them after the show. I was wearing a long hippy skirt and no shirt, no wallet... just a skirt and nothing else.

I lost the girl I came with in the crowd and never saw my friends in the van again. I was barefoot and wearing nothing but a skirt until the tour reached Illinois and I was able to go home, shower, and get a change of clothes. What a great time, what great memories.
