Saw the Dead twice in London in 1990. Had a fabulous time. Managed to get to the Wakarusa festival in 2005 and 2006. Best birthday present ever was listening to the Schwag playing Terrapin Station whilst dancing with my daughter on a sunday morning in Kansas. The Dead have been a constant source of joy in this world we live in. I have passed my love of their music to my daughter, who knew all the words to Friend of the Devil at the age of 5, and even now as a typical 13 year old would rather listen to the 76 new year show than the Fratellis in the car. We sing their songs and dance. Though her friends thought her strange when she went to school with her steal your face lunch box. She is known as the hippy chick. The Grateful Dead a band for all occasions and all ages. I thank you for the times we have had. Be kind is my philosophy.

Will King's new album featuring John Cohen aka "Uncle John"
Greetings...all. July, 2007 marks the release of Will King's solo album, Come on in from the Cold. Featuring twelve Americana-twinged tracks, special guests include Grammy nominated John Cohen [The New Lost City Ramblers, and recently featured in Martin Scorsese's documentary on Bob Dylan, No Direction Home]. Cohen, who served as inspiration for the Grateful Dead's "Uncle John's Band," plays mandolin and sings on the title track. John Ventimiglia [Artie Bucco, The Sopranos] co-wrote "28 Days," and sings on the title tracks refrain.Other guests include Drummer Doug Yowell [Suzanne Vega, Duncan Sheik, The Dragonflys], bassist Saul Zonana [Ace Frehley, Luv Junkies] and vocalist RJ King. paste: http://cdbaby.com/cd/willking For more information, please visit www.willkingmusic.com - click "music" to hear title track! Will King is looking to develop a presence in Europe - if you can assist in any way [bookings/gigs - spreading the music/word] that would be great! Many thanks....be well

For some reason, becoming a member didn't work out 6 weeks ago, but now I succeeded. Never attended a show and became a fan only around 1992. Not necessarily because of what they were doing at that time but still I own all legal music except for Terrapin (too expensive, considering the period) and the last three downloads. Why are those no longer available? I also own some 45 concerts from before the Live archive closed. Not having attended those shows I tend to prefer officially released concerts that sound great (apart from the terrible Jerry at Lunt Fontanne stuff which I can't stand and only goes to show not having attended the show makes one more critical...) I am the lucky owner of the 10 cd Fillmore set which happened to sell out before official release. Should become a legal download, of course. Basically, I like everything up to October 1974, 1977 and some later concerts (DP 5 and DP 6 spring to mind, gotta love DP 6 cd2!). I think 1989-1991 is somewhat overrated, but it's a comeback anyway. Great music, great site, nice discussion. Keep up the nice work!

A bientôt Pascal

Friends, deadheads, amurkans, lend me your ears. I'm sitting here in Frome, Somerset, England listening to Bobby and the boys, from Tuesday night. The wonders of the internet. And there was me for a large chunk of the 80s - along with quite a few other folk, I now discover - believing I was the last deadhead in England (copyrighted for the title of my probably never to be written Autobiography). Fact was, with no internet back then, tape trading was not even a blip on the horizon unless you toured (and I was knee-deep in children and broke), and the studio albums of the 80s led me - sadly - to believe the Dead had turned into an MOR band. (Sorry Brent, that was you!). The advent of the net, to which I had access at work from 1993, and then at home from '97 changed that. Now I'm sitting at my PC with over 800 downloaded shows by the Dead on it, most of the recorded output, lots of Dog, JGB and the rest of the family. Currently 18 weeks on non-stop family music on 1.5 terabytes worth of HD. And more to come! But how did I get here? I blundered into the Dead in '66. 15 years old then, my older brother, bless him, introduced me to the glory that is rock 'n roll in the 50s, spinning Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley & Elvis non-stop on his bedroom Dansette. It's always been rock 'n roll for me (you can dance to it), and not "rock" music (no dancee, just shakee your long hair). The Dead the prime rock 'n roll dance band, and for those who naysay that, the Dead were ALWAYS a dance band, and always a rock 'n roll band. Don't argue with me, you at the back. Respect your elders. I was at Public (ie. Private) school in Cambridge in the second half of the 60s. Friends had parents who boarded American students. I heard tapes of the Airplane late 66, and then Saint John Peel, 3 miles offshore on pirate Radio London, hit me late on night, early '67 I think, with Golden Road. Sold, one lifetime's worth of obsession and utter delight, to the lanky teenager in Woodford, Cheshire (nothing bu the dead & dying, now, in my home town). Oxford Uni, '69 to '72. First year exams stopped me seeing their first show here, a one-off in 1970. But the Dead became the soundtrack to my exporation of psychedelics ("majored" in that, rather than the Eng. Lit. & Lang. I was meant to be studying). So the Europe '72 tour was my live initiation. Bless them, they turned up in our Finals term, and wrecked it, happily. Priorities. Only got to see 5 of the shows, from what I recall, but all of them beyond description. And the Wembley Dark Star is for me one of the finest pieces of music, of any description, of all time. It never fails to move me, so sweet and ecstatic is it. Utter bliss. Got to see them every time they came over. 81 to 90 was like a desert, so the 90s shows were a delight, to find the band, and Jerry, in such fine form. But it was no surprise to me when the big man left us. He had too much to carry, and sooner or later that breaks you. I still tear up when I think of him, and bless him every day for what he gave us all during those years. As an old friend of mine once said to me, "He's the only guitarist who can drop you with a note". So true. And the only to make me laugh out loud, and then weep minutes later. He talked to our hearts, through our ears. So, I'm sitting here at my desk, in gorgeous, green, wet Somerset, reflecting on over 40 years of connection to the many-headed monster that is the Dead. I get my live fix by flying over for the Ratdog Beacon shows these past two years, and come out of thos just as I did from seeing the Dead, high as a kite, skipping on tiptoe, and with a shit-eating grin splitting my face. Gotta love it. Love to you all, fellow deadheads - we are indeed everywhere :-) Jeremy

I really don't know. We missed the show.I still feel bad about it. Instead of being able to publish the shows that I attended (zero) I could better publish a list of the shows that I missed: 1986 The Grateful Dead Gruga Halle, Germany. (Rock Palast) 2007 Bob Weir / Daedaheads, Norway 2008 Dark Star Orchestra, Amsterdam It is getting quite impressive. But there are always the CD's and DVD's to enjoy. Ship of Fools

Hey y'all, finally I reached page 37! Uff...Well, I hitchhiked through the States in Summer 89, once from Yosemite back to SF a girl gave me a ride and sais "I go to a GD concert, why don't you come with me? We'll get a ticket somehow". I did. Whoops, what was that? The parking lot, the people, the atmosphere *** We arrived at a friends tent who said "I'll get you a ticket." A while later he managed to buy one from a black young guy in a tye-die. So I went later on with the flow of happy smiling people who definitely were looking forward to something VERY special. I wondered and went with the flow, wow! At the gate they checked my ticket and this guy said "I'm sorry, a counterfeit, turn around and go back." Wot? Went back to the tent, sad... There this girl who gave me a ride and her friend who bought the ticket were waiting for me, "A counterfeit, right?", "Yeah". "Here, take mine, it's your first show". Man, that was unbelievable, kind and warm, friendly and helpful - DEEP. That was the entrance to my first Dead show. I was hooked, not seen very much shows but started tape trading later and then CDs, began hosting a radio show on public radio with a friend in Bremerhaven called FISCHPOP including my regular Dead Ecke (Dead corner). After moving to Hamburg, I started my own jamband-related radio show on Radio FSK (Freies Sender-Kombinat) called STASH playing sounds of the GD, Phish and other jambands from the States or Europe or Germany. Man, I love the music of the Dead, their jams and explorations on stage! Yes, there are some like-minded heads over here in Europe, I am in joyous contact with firends in Parma/Italy, Edinburgh/Scotland, Le Havre/France, Zürich/Switzerland and traded with uh, a guy in Madrid/Spain, one in Stockholm/Sweden and so on and with quite a few in Germany. There are even some deadhead meetings in this country. Visit www.germanheads.de or www.deadicated.de. And I'm happy to meet deadheads in Hamurg and it's getting more and more. A few weeks ago I was suddenly invited to a rehearsal of a GD tribute band here in Hamburg - together with Arne and Anneliese (anybody knows them??) I was impressed and deeply moved. They named themselves Cosmic Finger and a few weeks later they played their first show in front of only a dozenorsomething deadheads and muchmuch more people who had never heard about the Grateful Dead. That was an experience! Dancing all around the place (Mayday), everybody was happy and enjoying the music. Puh, I'm sorry, I'm writing and writing. I'll get back to you, after reading all the 37 pages in I don't know, two hours with a few Astra, I'm taking some of you in my heart already. Ah, before I forget: you can visit www.stash-radio.de to find out about my radio show, next one will be on June 10 with some Winterland 73 and Road Trips, new Phish releases and the marvelous Mars Mushrooms from the Nürnberg area. Wanna listen? All the previous shows are waiting to be heard at http://www.stash-radio.de/archiv.htm. I'll have one more on the balcony and go to bed. Ah, and DSO was a treat, last year in the Fabrik in Hamburg (yeah, where Bobby played) and in Bonn, this year in the Melkweg for a few days. >> Jodester, still hanging around in Hamburg? More than five weeks ago, I moved somewhere completely else and next to nothing worked out the way I had planned, thought and had been told it would. Now after I have internet access and a working email address again, I try my best to get used to the 56k modem flint stone thing again and again. Updates for my computer will take forever while downloading music is history. But well Aside the fact, that I feel like shooting a lion in my pants, like ole Groucho once said, life is good, especially the strawberries & I will ripple on andré

Anyone going to this gig? I've been travelling around England for the last five weeks! Glastonbury etc..! Great times! an old school tourhead finally makes it to Glastonbury and Leonard Cohen was wicked! Now I'm trying to do Little Feat in Wolverhampton, London and Weert (Bospop Fest. Holland). A little bit of the tour at least! Basically I need a place to crash after the Wolverhamton gig to make it feasible for me to be there. Or a ride to London after the gig that night as I can stay at my friends house there. Or hotel room floor space and I could chip in. Can anyone help out? I'll be out on the road across Northern Europe until November for anyone interested (Frank!! Wassup?)! Then back to Hamburg! The Sunday at Bospop also features Dickey Betts of Allman Brothers fame if anyone is interested! :) Hope to c some of u there perhaps!? Much love, Jody "Are you kind?"

I have only just got an e-mail number and this is my first post ever.Love of the Dead is dragging me kicking and screaming into the modern world and it is hard work.I first heard the Dead in 71 when I borrowed Live Dead off a schoolfriend.I loved Dark Star-St Stephen-The Eleven but I didnt really "get" sides 3 and 4 at the time.Off to university in 73 where I bought a second hand copy of Europe 72 and I was hooked. The music scene at the time was rubbish so I got into US bands-The Dead,Allman Brothers,Dylan,Doors,New Riders etc. I only saw the boys once,at the London Rainbow in 81,a solid gig but a bit like a long first set.I missed them in 91 because I was into dance music at the time and didnt know they were over here.It is only through Dicks Picks and more recently downloading that I have come to appreciate what an absolutely stonking band they were.I am up to about 90 concerts on CD and I cant wait to jump on the Vines once I have worked out what to do.My tame computor geek left for S.Africa shortly after showing me how to download so it could be a while.I had to teach myself to convert flac and shn formats and it took ages.I am listening to a rehearsal session from 28-2-75,worth downloading just for the "Bouncy jam" which does exactly what it says on the can.Wonderful.

Hi Sven, nice to see you in here!Yeah, Cosmic Finger is way cool! I've seen them four times (although they only played three shows yet...) and I was overwhelmed every time. Invited them as guests in my radio show STASH (http://www.stash-radio.de/archiv.htm), played their first studio track during the last show and gotta say, they are just a bunch of cool guys. I hope to see them a lot more on stage (and beyond...). Frank --- www.stash-radio.de

Thought it was about time I joined and said hi! I'm in Manchester and was lucky enough to see them in '85. Only wish I'd been old enough to see them in the late 60s/early 70s as well. I've been to Southport - but I never saw any deadheads there! I remember there were a handful of deadhead gatherings at the Briton's Protection a few years ago. Do they still happen? Anyone know?
