    Grateful Dead Meet Up At The Movies 2013: "Sunshine Daydream"

    On a blistering summer day in 1972, the Grateful Dead took the stage on the grounds of the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, Ore. for what would become one of the most legendary concerts of the band’s storied history. Join us this summer when we screen the previously unreleased concert film “Sunshine Daydream” as part of our now annual Grateful Dead Meet Up At The Movies.

    Originally shot on 16mm film and painstakingly restored to HD resolution, "Sunshine Daydream" captures the band at the height of their powers (fresh off the Europe ’72 tour) and at the epicenter of the counterculture movement. Special features include never-before-seen footage of the concert day as well as recently recorded interviews with key participants from the time such as Ken Babbs, Sam Cutler, Wavy Gravy and Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Garcia, who provide insight on how the community came together for this special event to help raise money to keep the local town’s Springfield Creamery afloat. This extraordinary screening also shines a spotlight on some mighty fine tunes, with a playlist containing all new Stereo and 5.1 Audio mixes done by Jeffrey Norman at TRI Studios in San Rafael, Calif. and mastered by Grammy® winning engineer David Glasser at Air Show Mastering in Boulder, Colorado, with tape transfer and restoration by Plangent Processes.

    "Sunshine Daydream" will only be playing on the silver screen for one night! Come along and connect with Dead Heads in your neighborhood on Thursday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m. local time.

    Tickets are now available at www.FathomEvents.com.

    DVD Release
    There is in my opinion almost no chance that they would put this together for a one day movie theater release and then not subsequently release the DVD. Wow, sorry for all the negatives. My point: I believe the DVD will DEFINITELY be sold here, and would strongly expect it to be this year.

far more so than the Declaration of Independence. The nudity is innocent and beautiful; utopia with a time limit is what the concerts were. 20 years later felt to me much like what I feel from watching this concert. The girl at 5:30 may be well sunburnt, but she's arguably as free and happy as any individual on the face of the planet at that point in time, and that's what it was all about. :)Being in a place with like-minded individuals where you could momentarily experience the incredible joy and freedom that only a GD concert could provide... There's nothing else in the world like a Grateful Dead concert!

I was so happy when I heard the news, I like many have been waiting for decades to see this official release. THEN, I realized I would be on the road somewhere in the middle of Nebraska on my way to my MC's nationals. WHAT A DOWNER! So RINO, please really consider releasing this on DVD and Bluray. I'm sure there are thousands of us who will be unable to see this in theatre, who have been waiting for what seems like forever.

Love the music, and watching the Dead on stage. Love Bob Wier's lead guitar during the interlude between China and Rider. But, too much audience footage for my taste. I would rather watch the band!

Can't even look at that girl dancing around 7:40; she's got one spot on small of her back that's just brutally purple and singed. Hope she didn't die of skin cancer 6 mos. after this, whoever she is. Seems like that's how people were back then-sunblock, who needs it? Little sun won't hurt ya... Hope they consider releasing this officially. (plus audio of the whole three sets, natch)

In the summer of 1972 every other hippie in Oregon went swimming naked from the McKenzie River to Fall Creek to the upper Willamette, Our favorite swimming hole was nine miles above Lowell in Lookout Point Reservoir. Slo Lettuce, thank you for the affirmation of freedom well scribed. Gone are the days. Having left home, owning not much more than a backpack. Exploring freedom in the utopian fleeting dream. Could not last forever. There was no talk of disappearing ozone. We were young, innocent, and carefree as it gets. Getting older is not easy but I wouldn't trade anything for time spent in Oregon back then. Veneta was the pinnacle of an amazing summer. Remember what Jack Nicholson said to Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider; "Its not you they hate Billy, its your freedom they hate". I look forward to the official release of Sunshine Daydream with a fondness close to my heart. An old friend Jay who has seen the Dead more times than anyone I know put it real clear one time, "The Grateful Dead are shamans of the highest order". Well they sure evoked the spirit of freedom and beauty and community on that day of August 27, 1972 as if touched by God, Buddha, the great void, The Great Mother, the Sun, Moon,Stars and Mother Earth. I thank my lucky stars for being there. Long live the Spirit of the Grateful Dead.

The year I graduated from High School. Right after I first started my 200+ shows. Lots of family and friends don't know why any one would do that. Some think we threw our underwear on stage or something. Alas, the time has past and they can never really know. I, myself have almost forgotten what it was like to be young, full of energy, not have bad joints (that's hips and knees folks, we had good joints then and gave some to Jerry later that year at the Palace) and be so high you couldn't talk.Put me down for half a dozen DVD copies. I would love to give them out as a window into what it was like to see the boys back then. My cousin saw a clip of the band and asked who was playing guitar. I told him it was Jerry. He didn't recognize him with out grey hair. We need footage of the band in their youthful excitement. When it was still new to them and us. This release would be a very good bet.

I wasn't there in 72 but, like Mary E., made it to 82. No comparison, I guess, or maybe there was. Same mushroom field full of crazy hippies doing their thing. But what in ten years, what have we lost? A certain looseness to the scene that marked it's still relatively newness? Maybe the tribal quality? Don't know, can't put my finger on it. But am so glad we have this prism of a movie to look through and compare, or just see the swirly aspect if we weren't at both....

If I have to see a bunch of naked drugged out dancers on a full screen, I think I'll stay at home and LISTEN to the music. I have always been in it for the music, and never saw any need to inebriate my mind to "hear" the music. I know there is a culture to this, but I am really bored and tired by the fact that you have to be under the influence of some kind of substance to get it. I have always gotten the beauty and presence of this band and they will always be my favorite. I love this band for the music. That will always be. I grew up in the early 70's. I find this presentation nostalgic, but also a bit sad. This fan is turned off.

Hey Now Dead.net and Fathom Events....Really happy this is finally getting a theatrical showing. If course we all have owned bootlegs for years! LOL Anyway, the auspicious date of August 1st is a fine time to enjoy this with fellow deadheads. But there is also so much music going on that night as well! Here in the Bay Area we have the choice of Warren Haynes with the Symphony doing what is sure to be a very heartfelt musical celebration of Jerry Garcia's birth. And the fabulous fantastic Mickey Hart Band will be starting off their tour in Healdsburg that same night... There are events all over the country, in every city the movie is playing in... My point being, an earlier showing would be awesome! We could catch the movie at say, 4:20, then be done in time for a quick bite on our way tothe symphony, or any other Jerry celebration... Just an idea! With love, your friend, happycat!>^.^<|DHL|(~);}

An interesting cultural shift is visible in this film. By '77 the nudity was pretty much gone from the tour. But what was the same through the '70's was the fact that 90% of the audience was clearly under 30 years old or even 25. hard to imagine the Dead and the Deadheads as youngsters but once upon a time we were.

Progpete makes an interesting point. We should be able to separate the music from the drugs and the "scene". We should- certainly. I've always maintained that my love for the Dead was all about the music. But honestly, when I hear, say 2/14/68 or the Fillmore West 69 recordings, it's pretty hard for me to completely separate the music from the celebration of consciousness likely going on in those halls. Same for all the 68-74 shows, including the fields of Veneta 8/27/72. The music stands on its own. It's great and has real integrity. That's why we still listen to it almost 50 years later. But I see no point and no fun in trying to separate it from its context. The 68-74 period seems to me like an innocent beautiful time. I don't think a concert film with as many crowd scenes from the 90's would be as appealing to me. But, truth be told, I'd probably enjoy it too.:/

I mean I guess my point was just to reiterate what someone said earlier: that the Dead considered the audience almost like a member of the band. The amazing music of 8/27/72 is so wild and beautiful. I'm sure the fact that it was played to a sea of crazy hippies had something to do with it. Surely, the music of 8/27/72 wouldn't be the same if it was performed in front of a bunch of fully clothed straight-laced melons sitting in lawn chairs.

My local theater gives a "mature audiences" warning. So, I don't think they will pixelate the "bits and pieces". If they do, i'll boycott, as a matter of principle.

Some were stoned at this show, some were not. Some where naked, most were not and everyone got along just fine. And regarding the music, everyone "got it". I see more tolerance there than I see today. If you have a problem with viewing the crowd in this movie, you're the one who doesn't get it.

this benefit is almost exactly 3 yrs after Woodstock. Loads o' nudity there,too and still pretty fresh (fuzzy?) in people's memory. '72 was still a very liberated time. Secondly, and more importantly, it was 108F that day. Folks, that's downright hot. The greenhouse I worked in today was pushing that temp. easily. I would love to work nude in that kind of heat but it would seriously affect my employment status. I get the nudity from that perspective. Add "fun tabs" to the whole scenario and ,well, the nudity was just inevitable. What makes me uncomfortable are the few people I see clothed in pants and long sleeve shirts on a day of 108F heat. WOW!!! **Had the nudity pictured been of old farts like me instead of the younger, more attractive folks, then I would be all for some "pixelated" censorship (and so would you :)) Otherwise, I hope they leave well enough alone. It certainly is innocent enough. Another interesting cultural note in this outstanding document of American history is the apparent absence of tattooed skin. Fast-forward 41 yrs. and this scene would more than likely look quite different.

Yeah I also noticed the lack of tattoos. And no backwards baseball caps, no dudes wearing earrings. Even very few tie-dyes. Just old school hippies in jeans, t-shirts and sneakers.

Please print copies of the old Oregon Dead t-shirt. Only roadies and extra help got those 41 years ago. The 1982 Veneta Dead shirts also kicked ass. I'm going to see the movies in Albuquerque and get both the CD/DVD package and the 4 set LPs. Bring on the schwag, t-shirts, coffee cups, bumper stickers and grilled cheese, buck and a half. Ah where do all the years go. And very observant Slo Lettuce, very few tie-die shirts, hardly any tattoos, piercings, dreadlocks were only in Jamaica and with the sadhus on the Ganges. And please, no censored copies of Sunshine Daydream. Grateful Dead warts and all, that goes for Dead Freaks too. By the way "Pole Guy" died last year, amazing to have that much impact from the grave.

I apologize in advance for this rant. Consider this your warning to stop reading...lolI have always thought Deadheads are the most tolerant people I have ever known. It is one of the reasons I felt instantly right at home when I went to my first show. I can't believe all the negativity regarding the nudity. It's sad that people are so offended by some skin. I wonder if some of these same people let their kids watch violent stuff on TV or play M rated video games without batting an eye. Yes, by all means, that is okay but heaven forbid your kids see some naked people dancing and feeling free to express themselves however they so chose. And even if you do not do drugs, they have always been part of the scene. That's just a fact. It's your choice to partake or not. But yes, there will probably be some people on the screen at some point who chose to do so. I hope they play the movie just the way it was filmed. I will be very offended if they blur anything. This is a piece of Rock and Roll history and I'm all grown up now, so I can handle seeing a bit of nudity on screen. Plus, that is why it is listed as mature. Leave your kids with a sitter if this is something you would rather they not see. Or skip it and buy the DVD. I hope I can make it to see this at the movies. It's a bit early for me. I am so glad these meet-ups are continuing. Keep them coming. Rant over....you may return to your normally scheduled programming ;-) (~);}

For me it's not the nudity (that's fine)- it's some of those full-body sunburns in the making. Ouch, that's gonna HURT! Oh, the senseless pains of youth... At least they're in the service of musical ecstasy and a great time out in the open with everyone. I wish I had a time machine so that I could transport myself back with a 55-gallon drum of good sunblock for anyone who needed it. And if anyone were willing to share their joint or pipe (or hits) with me in return I'd let 'em ; )

Love this, Love waking up to this everyday. Happy birthday to our beloved Jerry Garcia, thank you so much for everything you have done for us! You will never ever be forgotten, Long live the legacy that he created... "when your confused, just listen to the music play" and as Jerry always said “If we had any nerve at all, if we had any real balls as a society, or whatever you need, whatever quality you need, real character, we would make an effort to really address the wrongs in this society, righteously.”

Sign me up with Badkitty - I can't believe the protests against the nudity. Talk about selling out!! OMG - "I don't want my kids seeing naked people" Well I got a newsflash for you friend, Men have penises, women have breasts. If you're trying to hide that from your kids - you just might end up with maladjusted children. There's nothing wrong with a bunch of hippies dancing naked. Have you forgotten the way the Dead transported you to that blissful place where there was only light, love and music? Honestly, if you've fallen that far off the bus, stay home. Your negativity and hippocratic attitude will only pollute the good vibes.
