Hi everyone. I'm new on this particular forum. I'm 40 years of age. I live in St. Augustine, FL.. I love everything about this site. My favorite GD studio album is Blues For Allah, and my favorite live album is DP's # 3. I prefer the 1972-1978 live recordings.

In case you haven't heard, if you click on "Saturn" in the Spring tour section on the main page, a picture of a terrapin and a road sign reading Hartford '77 pops ups, so rumor has it that 5/28/77 is gonna be the next official release. As most of us know, it is a great show, featuring a MONSTER Sugaree. I'd rather see Rhino release a show such as 5/12/77 where a SBD does not circulate (or even a solid AUD), but 5/28/77 is definitely a worthwhile choice.

Don't I wish, no I hate to say it was Wierd Al Y. Thanks to Kramer (he's 10 & thinks ol' Al is just a hoot). I will never be able to listen to Another Bites the Dust without singing Another one Rides the Bus. He's has tons more where that gem came from, I don's suggest it though.

Hey all--my screen name is supposed to be Salparadise not sakparadise. I fat fingered the 'k' instead of the 'l'. Had already copmpleted registrating befiore I figured uit out. The reason for Sal Paradise is in the subject title. Read that book at 15 vand I was never the same. Saw the Dead in 1983 on the East Coast, did most of my shows in Maryland, PA, Va and points north and south. I always knew I was a little different then most of my childhood friends--really found my family when I got on the bus. Anyway, I'm a single dad of three wonderful people who happen to be my kids. Teenagers all. Live in the Flint, Michigan area and when I retire I'mk heading out to Arizona or New Mexico--thought about the Eastern shore but been there. Lost all my boots--about 60 shows--when i got divorced. Advice to all--when you leave you can always buy clothes--Dead boots are priceless. So I'm trying to patch together my collection. If anyone has 10-20-84 Syracuse, 06-26-84 Merriweather and 06-30-85 Merriweather please send me a private message. Those shows have always held special meaning to me. By the way, if anyone is in michigan you should really check a band called Covert Operations--play some real nice Dead and you will smile, smile, smile. Bruce

Buy a couple gallons of isopropyl alcohol. If you can isolate the effected parts, soak in the isopropyl then rinse with the iso. Let dry and reassemble. Isopropyl alcohol will not damage electronic parts and can be counted on to evaporate completely. Good luck. Peace, Richard

Hi, I'm new to this forum, though I've had this site as the opening page to my web browser for years. I'm an art teacher in the Philly area, listening & going to shows since 7th grade! I had a DH older brother who took me and a close friend to shows if they were in town. He took me to my 1st concert, Bowie at the Tower theater in '76. He's gone now (brother, not Bowie), but he got me on the bus. I am a remarried old time twirl girl with 2 young kids- 5 & 7. It's tough to be an older mom, especially after teaching K-6 graders art all day. but, I love teaching and my district and program are great- this is year 25 for me. I'm set to see ratdog in March, just got tix and will go with a friend of mine, known him since 2nd grade. his wife and my husband are not DHs, so we go together. He and I went to hundreds of shows together...ah, them old days. I was very lucky to be in art school where I scheduled my midterm and final critiques around shows and tours. I went on the road for a bunch of fall and summer tours, college tours in NY, PA, NJ, and MD...too much fun. I know some of you have (and may still be wearing) earrings I made, t shirts my friend and I silk screened, t-dyes, and some awesome glass ornaments I used to blow back in my college days. It was a fun time and got the travelling bug into my soul. I saw much of the US with Jer & the boyz following me close behind, then set out to Europe, and other venues. As a teacher, I have been lucky to have travel time and spent months in central America, Mexico, and Malasia. I'm a warm water scuba diver, so I follow the sun and warm waves before an area gets too known...but with 2 young kids now, my last trip was to Disney World! Fun, surreal, but no Panajahel,Guatemala!

Here's a great little story of how I got involved with the Dead. My brother (Peter) was leaving home to go to California & was downsizing - and I was on my way off to college - and he'd said I should listen to the Grateful Dead & let me listen to China Cat Sunflower on an album (this was 1978). He was busy trying to change his music collection from album to cassette, and had recently attended some (very outstanding) GD shows & had tapes of them (he knew the taper) - 5.26.77, 5.28.77& 9.3.77. Anyway, He went off to LA & I went off to college (with a new sound system & lots of music - including some "broken" tapes he'd left behind) I did cassette surgery on them & resurected them, only to find an incredible audience tape of 5.26.77 - the kind that doesn't annoy or overwhelm, but gives you the sense of being actually There - and I labeled the tapes "Poor Pete's Dead" - and made copies for all my friends eventually - and then I started going to shows & collecting - I burned through about 4 different tape decks trading tapes - and had a workbench with an in-folder & out-folder - and even now, I still have 7 of those wooden racks that hold 100 tapes each - all Dead Bootlegs - but I discovered places like http://www.shnflac.net/index.php where you can download shows & now have almost as much on cd & hard drive as I do on cassette. This vining thing is new to me - and I'm signed up for quite a few - Can't wait. As for me - I'm turning 48 this year (in November) - saw the Dead first in 1978, am married w/ 3 wonderful kids, 10(G), 13(B), 15(B) who have grown up listening to this music - My daughter's favorite song is Dire Wolf - it made quite a stir when she was 5 years old, singing "Pleeeeese don't murder me" - some people thought it was strange - but others thought it was great she already knew the words. Anyway, I play music (mostly Dead, but some Neil, Dylan, & other eclectic stuff) and work in the computer industry. I bought a bass for my oldest son, but he hasn't really worked at it & got a drumset for my middle son - he's energetic, but needs discipline. He sounds fantastic when he wails on them - but can't keep a steady beat on a soft song. Then my little girl - she will either be a lacrosse champion, soccer champion, or an actress - she's got the drive & the looks - but she can't carry a tune to save her life. I'm hoping I can teach her guitar & voice - she really really wants it. My wife doesn't understand - even though she's a deadhead at heart - she thinks I should listen to "new" music (which I do - I'm actually quite eclectic - I just heard a song by the ting tings called "that's not my name", which I thought was pretty cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGtkNJ_DyOk

This probably is not the place to air this but this letter was in my "inbox" today.I have rec ieived these before via regular email (spam) and was wondering if anyone else has been hit with this. Please advise- From: Nelly2sweet To: brewster boy Subject: Hello My Dear Date: March 26, 2008 - 5:38am Hello My Dear How are you doing today, i hope you are doing fine. I hope and i know that this email that i am sending to you would be reaching you in good health?with me just here hoping and praying that you can find a place in your heart to help me save my mothers life,, I want to tell you something very important, though i am not suppose to tell you now because we haven't met before but i know that you would be of good help to me, but i think i need to tell you this, because i think you may be a nice person because when i sending these mail,i felt you are a nice and caring person. And i think i can trust you in this too, this is why i am telling you this. All i want you to do is to keep this as a top secret between us. and also promise me that no other person will hear this okay. Right now am really going through hard and terrible life with my mother. Actually it happened when i lost my dad, my dad is dead and i am left with my mum. so after the death of my father, his family member came to the house and collected everything my dad left behind for us. and they ask me and my mum to leave the compound and they sold the house. We could not able to find them again because of the war that happened in my country Liberia, so just last week my mum show to me some documents which my dad use to deposit $19Million US dollars in a bank here in Ghana and also a picture of my dad at the time of sign the agreement letter with the bank and he use my name as the next of kin to the funds. So when my mum show to me the documents, i was so happy so i travel to Ghana with my mum. When we get to the bank and we presented all the legal documents that was given to my father at the time of depositing the fund with the bank, we were told that the money is still with the bank, but they cannot transfer the money to us here in Africa, because my dad went into an agreement with them at the time of depositing the fund that the fund should be transferred on express transfer to leave Africa. I never knew my dad was planning of opening a company abroad. so on our way out of the bank, one of the staff of the bank advice us to look for a trust worthy foreign partner to help us receive the funds from the bank. So i want you to help us contact the bank, so that the bank can transfer the money of my late father to you, so that i and my mum can come over to your country and meet you so we all can start a better and happy life again. Please, i want you to understand that I trust you and I know you can help me and my family because we are passing through hard moments here in Ghana, I am a beautiful girl and so when people see me they don't know the condition that i am undergoing due the reason that I don't want people to know the stress and pains we are passing here in Ghana, and then we meet and live life to the fullest, and i feel we can be together if it is meant to be, that is why am telling you this top secret because am sacred and this is all we have left in this world. i believe you can understand my present situation. I trust you that is why I am telling you this. as am writing you this mail, my eyes is full of tears because my mum is seriously sick and we don't know any body here in Ghana. so we are living with an old lady called Mrs. Vida Anayor, she is working as a security officer close to us, but she is very old and she will stop work very soon, so try your best and help me and my mum. We really need your help. Life is so hard and terrible for me and my mum right now in Ghana because we don't have any helper. i think I've truly been blessed by finding you and I 'll never let you go away from my life. I will want you to understand that we are going to sign an agreement before the bank will transfer the fund of my late father to you because we have not met before now and the Agreement is for the security reason of the funds too. so i will like you to provide this information so that i and my mum can get the Agreement done from a lawyer here in Ghana, and send you a copy of it to sign. So please reply me with your, Full name, Age, Occupation and address. My mum promise to give to you 20% percent if you can help us get the money from the bank. I will send you a picture of my mum, my late father at the time of depositing the fund with the bank here in Ghana and a picture of my late father casket during burial ceremony, and i will also send to you a picture of myself. When i receive a reply from you. Please try and get back to me so that i can send to you the legal documents that was given to my father at the time of depositing the fund with the bank. Please take care of your self, i hope to hear from you soon. God bless you. Yours Obediently, From Nelly and mother nelly2sweet@sify.com

I just figured I'd drop a note to let you know a little about me...So to not bore you all to tears, I'll keep it short...Music has always been a huge part of my life ever since I was a child, and speaking of that, I'm very excited to say that my wife of five happy and healthy years are about to have our first baby any day now...and the little guy has his first cd waiting for him, (Jerry & David's Not for kids only)...I only saw the Dead about a handful of times, but the first one "changed my life" along with Jimi, a trip to AZ and a copy of On the Road...I haven't had a lot of time as of late to play music, so listening is getting me through the day...I have a couple of songs up on myspace (I know it's cheesy) that I recorded at a studio in Brookline MA, about a year and a half ago...if your interested it's under Jonny B and the Invisible Strangers...Other than that I'm just happy to be here, with "nothing left to do but smile smile smile"Peace...

Howdy, I am Ursa Minor. I am a devout fan of the grateful dead and other music. I've been taping since the mid 80's and went digital in 93. I like to vine out shows by the GD and other bands to procure this great music. I would like to get back into trading CDR and DVD video if anybody is interested. Currently, I have a grateful dead list and I am compiling a non grateful dead list as well. Eulogy for Jerry Garcia By Robert Hunter (Delivered August 13, 1995, The Jerry Garcia Memorial, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California.) Jerry, my friend, you've done it again, even in your silence the familiar pressure comes to bear, demanding I pull words from the air with only this morning and part of the afternoon to compose an ode worthy of one so particular about every turn of phrase, demanding it hit home in a thousand ways before making it his own, and this I can't do alone. Now that the singer is gone, where shall I go for the song? Without your melody and taste to lend an attitude of grace a lyric is an orphan thing, a hive with neither honey's taste nor power to truly sting. What choice have I but to dare and call your muse who thought to rest out of the thin blue air, that out of the field of shared time, a line or two might chance to shine -- As ever when we called, in hope if not in words, the muse descends. How should she desert us now? Scars of battle n her brow, bedraggled feathers on her wings and yet she sings, she sings! May she bear thee to thy rest, the ancient bower of flowers beyond the solitude of days, the tyranny of hours -- the wreath of shining laurel lie upon your shaggy head, bestowing power to play the lyre to legions of the dead. If some part of that music is heard in deepest dream, or on some breeze of Summer a snatch of golden theme, we'll know you live inside us with love that never parts our good old Jack O' Diamonds become the King of Hearts. I feel your silent laughter at sentiments so bold that dare to step across the line to tell what must be told, so I'll just say I love you which I never said before and let it go at that old friend, the rest you may ignore.

...well, not really. Born in Louisville, grew up in Tennessee (the other screenname candidate was "Tennessee Mark"), Dylan/Dead in Philly was my first show (actually, that road trip *was* strange and terrible, but in a good way), got to see the Dead a few more times after that (including the Vegas '93 show where the guy was nearly struck by lightning about 50 feet behind me; went to all three shows and never saw Sting); saw Ratdog in Knoxville about 10 years ago and got to be the giver of miracle tickets (you should have seen that little hippy girl and her boyfriend's eyes - it was worth it); saw Phil&Friends w/Joan Osborne a couple of times a two years ago (awesome). Always envied the tapers and was ecstatic when I discovered Dick's Picks. Married, divorced, and back in Louisville, and counting the minutes until Dylan Daze starts next Friday - three shows in three cities in three days. Closest I'll ever get to following a tour. Vining works for me on a whole lotta levels, but I'm starting to feel greedy since I've signed up on about twenty. I'll try to keep up. My lack of anything resembling a life should help me out there ;^) If Cosmic Badger still has his GD spreadsheet I'd like a copy, it'll save me a lot of typing. Glad to meet you folks!

The excel spreadsheet mentioned includes all GD shows. It is derived from Setlists.net and may of course have some errors, but it seems to work so far.It has the following columns. Date Venue City/State/County Official Release with material from show Deadnet Vine I use it (with additional columns) to keep track of all the shows I have from trading and downloading. Its easy to adapt it to your own needs If anyone wants a copy they are welcome to send me a PM with their email address and I will send it as an attachment

I have met some very nice folks here at Dead.net , way to many to mention ...I thank you all !! And from the start the vineyard has been nothing but fun for me and for my wife .. There has been some folks asking people to please follow protocal , nothing wrong with that ,, is there ? so as some get frustrated with the one`s who do not post , ect .. It is really bad that some people who are here almost everyday ,, like to sit on vines ,, there is at least 4 maybe 5 vines that have vanished at the hands of one person .. what is up with that ? It`s amazing how one or just a few people can spoil it for other people.. Come on now please have some consideration for others , and as i write this the words "are you kind" come to mind ..

On the one hand, this is a well known problem with vines, which is why (puts on mod hat)we enthusiastically disavowed all responsibility for their smooth running from the get-go(takes off mod hat). But there are lots of well known problems with online communities and that does not mean we want to be dealing with them every day, and so we have community standards etc. It is a serious drag when vines wither, and worse when you're the one who's killing them off! People get upset for good reason. That said, I don't think the problem is going to go away, and maybe it would be good to just collectively agree to get a little more outspoken a little faster when things seem to be bogged down, and get the restarting process going earlier. Because life does happen, and people who are here every day for months just up and vanish without a trace sometimes, and whatcha gonna do...

I think that some viners do need to work on fullfilling their responsiblity with the Vineyard. The work can't get done on it's own and each person has responsiblities. If you have signed up and recieve a vine, post when it is in and out. Period. That is the expectation and each viner should do this regulary (seems to me that the newbies are about the best IMO). Yes, mary, I agree with you that life does happen, but viners, please then inform the viners that are waiting down the line about the problems that you have, or send the vine on along and sign up again or even ask for someone to help. You may be shocked, people will help! No one here wants to be the vine cops! But hey, the vines that are sent out are ALL of ours. Not just for the 'hit and run' viners who disappear. Please don't make us be the vine cops! I have seen other sites where VINE KILLERS identities are posted and nothing is ever sent to them again (both their screen name and their name and home address are posted). I have been hopeful that wouldn't be neccessary here, but? What are you going to do when vines are sent, received, and never sent on 'down the line' (intentional dead referance for comic relief)...er....Down the vine. Down the vine, down the vine, going down the vine. .. I must stop myself.. Really, we can do better. And I think that if a vine dies, you can contact the person who seeded (the originator) the vine (ie. yamadog just reseeded the '71 vine after it disappeared) or ask someone further up the line, er vine (can't stop myself ...). Asking for a reseed is a good way to make sure the vine doesn't die. Hey, all kidding aside, I believe that we viners have done a great job with this experiment in sharing and collaboration to all points in the USA and even reaching out the world (thanks to Bob). Really, it would be fun to count up how many shows we have shared and then how many viners have sent & received this great music. And that doesn't count how many times I have then shared the vineyards bounty with my friends (and they say thanks by the way!) If we can't get together and solve this, that would be too bad. We have all gotten much richer with the vineyard, with music, but more importantly in fun connections with other deadhead/music lovers/adventurers. This is a great way to spread what the Dead has shared so freely with all of us over the years. Lets water the vine! Vine on!

We must all be good tenders of the garden. We have been given some wonderful seeds, we all need to nuture this plot of earth. Sometimes you need to ask your friends or neighbors for help watering and and feeding your plants. There are lots of helpful neighbors here. A grate neighborhood for a garden. This garden is overall a bountiful delight of ripe and flavorful fruits, let's not let a few bad grapes spoil the whole vine. Thanks stu for bringing this up, thanks marye for the advice, and thanks oroboros for the perspective and wise words.

well, as a person who has a lot to offer...I'm somewhat cuatious and reluctant to offer seeds up until the community comes to understand some basic responsibility for executing vines... maybe there should be a probationary period or something...many sites have these and it always comes down to a couple of flakes getting booted...sometimes there are sincere problems but mostly it comes down to carelessness... anyway... I've been trading and taping since the early 90's ....I actually taped in the dead scene and via the net and through relix/dupree diamond periodicals... I got to know many "legendary" traders and tapers...I've got currently 750 shows approx of GD, and about 150 shows of non GD...which really isnt' that much...however, I've got more tied up in a divorce where I haven't been able to access nor determine if I will get the remainder of my music collection , commericial and non commericial back....cross some fingers and say some prayers for me... I'm also a full time musician and enjoy various cooking and wines........ I'll leave on a quote that is infamous and true: "there is nothing like a grateful dead concert..." see y'all Ursa Minor

As one who stumbled on this and had to ask how it all worked - but moved on to be a significant contributor of vines and finder of lost vines (i've revived quite a few), I feel qualified to comment here. First, I'd like to see a static topic, with a single post, titled "this is how vining works" - which would contain a concise description of how it works: 1. how to sign up - copying the list & adding your name correctly in the post - PM'ing the person before you with your address when your sign up 2. what to do when the vine arrives - post to the vine - copy the disks - send the originals to the next person on the list (they should have pm'd you with their address when they signed up) - if not, pm the next person for their address. 3. What to do after you mail the vine - post to the vine 4. Responsibilities - track what vines you signed up for (i have a spreadsheet that really helps) - post upon arrival / after mailing 5. Other stuff I forgot It could contain other or more detailed information, especially about dvd's and flac and shn etc... but it would be a single place to answer the questions that every new person asks when they stumble upon this "vining" environment. The important thing, though is that it shouldn't be a multi-page thing - just something Marye puts out & updates, if neccessary, where new people can be pointed to. Secondly, I have purposely mellowed and refuse to get uptight about the time it takes for vines to progress. By keeping a spreadsheet and updating it occasionally, I have a better feeling for when to expect things - some move at the rate of a week per person, others move much more quickly - but life happens - and sometimes people drop out unexpectedly - an arrest, a car accident, an illness - and then, don't you feel small for getting uptight about being impatient for some music, which is free to begin with? For the most part, I think things have been working quite well here - and I will continue to put out shows I think people would enjoy. As to the investigatory part - it's not that difficult, and I have enjoyed tracking down and spurring on stalled vines - many of which were stalled due to topics discussed above, or simply mis-understandings of how it all works. I say give communication a chance to work - most stalls are unintentional, although we've had the occasional few who needed to be removed from lists - but that doesn't mean they are bad people. We need patience and understanding - I've received a vine that was dead for 3 months before - and was grateful to get it. Anyway - that's my two cents.

email me at eric_katchmar@yahoo.com and I will send you a copy of my vining spreadsheet, which provides a dashboard, of sorts, for the vines I'm signed up with - both expected and completed. You can take this and modify it to suit your needs - and populate your vines in it. When I sign up for a vine, I put the name of the vine, the url link, the contents, the current sign-up list, as well as many other data fields in the spreadsheet - so I can sort it by expected arrival date. When I want to check thingns out on the vines I'm signed up for, I just open the spreadsheet and click on the url of each vine & update the spreadsheet, as neccessary. Then I re-sort on the new expected dates, so I am never surprised when a package arrives - and I track when I sent my address to the person in front of me & who is behind me & whether I have their address.
