Some consider Spring 1990 the last great Grateful Dead tour. That it may be. In spite of outside difficulties and downsides, nothing could deter the Grateful Dead from crafting lightness from darkness. They were overwhelmingly triumphant in doing what they came to do, what they did best — forging powerful explorations in music. Yes, it was the music that would propel their legacy further, young fans joining the ranks with veteran Dead Heads, Jerry wondering "where do they keep coming from?" — a sentiment that still rings true today, a sentiment that offers up another opportunity for an exceptional release from a tour that serves as transcendental chapter in the Grateful Dead masterpiece.

With Spring 1990 (The Other One), you'll have the chance to explore another eight complete shows from this chapter, the band elevating their game to deliver inspired performances of concert staples (“Tennessee Jed” and “Sugar Magnolia”), exceptional covers (Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and the band’s last performance of the Beatles’ “Revolution”) and rare gems (the first “Loose Lucy” in 16 years) as well as many songs from Built To Last, which had been released the previous fall and would become the Dead’s final studio album. It's Déjà Vu all over again

Hello dead nation This is a quarterly ritually we all enjoy. Guessing next release, hoping for a tour or a show. In reality, we probably all have more than well ever be able to listen to. But like the sports fanatic, music guru, we crave more, and it's a healthy way to stay in the game. Statistics, clues, And general community is the takeaway. Some generous folks have offered to donate $$ to support a guy. That is awesome. I am encouraged by spirit of the folks on line, that may simply look to this board as a source of connection. I don't post often at all, but love the build up and anticipation we all get, like Christmas morning to the next release. It's fun, and allows some great dialogue. Thanks to the a Dead mgmt Dave and the folks that fill a nice void.... As Yogi Berra said Deja Vu all over again, because I hope as the shows get released these boards will allow us to express opinions on music and lifestyle that has clearly defined us in our adult lives, and do it again. Check Amazon. Often they have the same material as dead.net, sometimes for a few dollars less. I almost pulled the trigger on Winterland 73 last week (at Amazon for $88) but read a review that said the sound quality was not so good, especially on the vocals. I'm glad I waited because I ordered Spring 90 TOO as soon as I got the email that it was available. I missed the first Spring 90 Box by waiting too long. After ordering I watched Dave's video and was pleased to hear that these are not just the leftovers, but (according to Dave) every bit as good as the shows in the first box.

My dumb slow ass did it once more. I grabbed the credit card and said, OK I'll get the winterland 73 box having just enjoyed the heck out of DP#19. SOLD OUT/ I had to laugh at myself! I let it happen with Winterland 77 and now 73. Im thinking by just a couple hours this time. The last recommendation came in, and I decided to do it!Serves me absolutely right thou friends, I gotta say, I did it to myself. Hesitate and it can happen. Alright so all thats left to do is eat a BIG order of Crow! Um Waiter!!!! Hoping Germany sees the Cup win. Be Well Folks and Enjoy.

Thanks antonjo! Rhino was in the forefront of issuing obscure or out of print garage and 60's band material in the 80's and 90's. The Historic/Vintage Dead would be right up their alley. Despite my occasional pre-release gripes regarding the fiscal part of some of these releases, we all know they are doing a bang up job with the Dead stuff.

Rdevil, Thanks a bunch for the shoutout. I couldn't accept a charity box in good conscience even if it were offered, because I've got a decent-paying job and others are likely more in need than me. It just so happens I've got some priority expenses just 'round the corner and I've shelled out for some other hobbies recently (comic book art and a 5th row Steely Dan ticket). So can I really justify another $250 on GD given the bank of releases I've already got. There's obviously going to be must-haves every year, but, wow, does this become a lifetime budget expense? I skipped the '77 box, but still danced around ordering it like a moth to flame. Because everything's limited now (not a complaint, just a business reality), the option of picking up something later, as in the Dick's days, no longer exists. Spring 90 was the last peak of my show-going glory years, when all my core friends were still going faithfully and as a group, etc. And first night Landover was a fine show. It was the first show for one among us, and she came in wanting "Crazy Fingers." I was like, great, though, um, they don't play that too often, but who knows, MAYBE they will.... And then the Crazy Fingers > Playin to open 2nd set. (The song was pretty much a staple after that.) Of course, this same person, being both female & feminist, was less thrilled with "Never Trust a Woman"...! Another rare tune that reappeared in force for Spring '90. Mr. Wilfred, there's only one Dave's I don't have (vol. 1)--but, again, thanks for the thought. As for the 'Bro, just Google Facebook donations, looks pretty easy to set a giving tree up. (Though not everyone's on Facebook.) Or someone could volunteer to shell out and coordinate the donations via PM. I don't see the GD site taking the lead on that, though I shouldn't dismiss the notion either. Spring '90 glee notwithstanding, still hoping for a mid-80's Dave's.... Whitey, I'll raise a toast to Rhino release of the Vintage/Historic stuff!, or a complete show release of the Danish Center (whatever its true date is, Feb or 3/12/66), for which various bits have trickled out on So Many Roads, Rare Cuts, and Taper's section. If vault tapes existed for 5-05-67, that would be something. Lastly, I'm happy to see the Fox back in the neighborhood....

Share the excitement!

I'm happy for those that jumped on this box and I enjoy the enthusiasm. I opt'd for the Brandford show and am very happy they made it available as a one off. That show alone will keep me busy for awhile. We are close to the unveiling of DaP 11 and seems we are leaning towards 11/17/72 and I would definitely scoop that up. It's hard to beat anything from 72. If one were to select 2 or 3 shows from the Europe '72 box, pull a date from a hat at random. I'm sure it wouldn't disappoint. I'm curious about the Bickershaw Fest, 5/7/72, Billy's birthday. I predicted this would be one of the best but haven't seen it mentioned by you guys. Perhaps being outdoors the sound is different? Any feedback on this one? 50 years of Dead! Please bring us 1967. It's long overdue. While at the same time, this sunny summer weather has got me in the mood for early eighties. I think DaP 8 was flawless and continues to draw me in. I think a show from 81-85 would do me some good. What do you guys think?

The spirit of giving

Speaking personally, I've been quite heartened by the spontaneous kindness of people helping spacebro get a copy of this set. The second-guessing and laundry list of "more worthy" recipients, not so much. There is always going to be somebody "more worthy" by somebody's lights, but in my opinion it's kind of rotten to throw disapproval on someone else's generous impulse because you'd rather people gave to someone else. If you want to give money to spacebro's box set, great. If you want to give to the food bank, also great. If you want to sit the whole thing out, ditto. We all make our own choices here, and that's as it should be. Speaking as the forum moderator, I mention in passing that giving away illegal copies of the box set involves being generous with what does not belong to you. Obviously I cannot come to your house and keep you from making as many copies of whatever you like as suits your fancy, whatever the legal status, but proclaiming your intention of doing so in the house of the people who are making the music available -- please don't. Thank you. Mod hat off. Back to your regularly scheduled discussion. As to setting up something more formal in the way of a charitable fund, my instinct is that it would be best to have you guys brainstorm it and set it up; I'm pretty sure TPTB would not want to be involved in administering other people's money on something like that even it it were possible (and hey, I am not a lawyer etc.). But if you guys can put it together and make it work (and figure out how to deal with the inevitable conflicts), I think a lot of folks would be into it.

I brought out Dicks Volume 2 this past weekend. Short but definitely very sweet... The Dark Star>Jam is one of my all-time favorites. Also recently listened to England '74. Can't remember the number off top of my head. Very good.

Dead start 1965?

I also have always been led to believe tht the band we all know & love so much got there start in 1965. So imagine my surprise when I found this pic while looking at some old photos of the Fillmore Westhttp://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG_400/MI0001/769/MI0001769217.jpg?pa… It clearly is labeled Oct. 23, 1964! Can anyone comment on this? Rock on

Don't know where you came across that photo, but I wouldn't put too much stock in the printed info at the bottom. The photo itself looks to be from a 1990 show, and look closely, there are TWO Bobs in it! Fairly easy to type onto a photograph these days. Check your Deadbase. No shows in October '64.

Dead Start

Look at the setlist on that bootleg. UJB PITB Ripple It sure isn't from the 60's.

RE hbob1995 - Dead start 1965

Well, the first Playing in the Band was 2-8-71, and the last King Bee was 12-15-71 (with PigPen). So, if this is all from one show, it would need to be between those dates. I checked and cannot find any shows (that we know of) that have all of the songs in the list for this CD at one show. It is probably songs culled from shows between those two dates. If anyone else wants to check, the song list on the cd is: Uncle John's Band NFA-GDTRFB Morning Dew Playing in the Band Ripple Sugar Magnolia Casey Jones Me & Bobby McGee King Bee. Interesting puzzle, though :)

Wow...

That was quite a morning read over my yogurt and granola. The best part of this cyber-community is that it helps me to stay connected to a great time in my life. The music and conversation sustain me on many fronts. Even the arguments and diatribes have their place (had some very intense discussions in the hotels, arenas, campgrounds, etc). The reality for all of us tied to this band is that we share a passion willingly with others. Some of us are nuttier than others (why I have the same show in four media formats or five different recordings is very hard to explain to the uninitiated). To get too serious or angry about any of this makes no sense. The music and memories should transport us to higher places in our minds. Sure it is personal, very very personal. In sharing the experience we need to give each other the space and respect we would give our neighbors at a show. Experienced plenty of true idiots there ( getting pissed on at calaveras 87 or having my girlfriend's head split open by a quarter thrown from the upper reaches at Nassau 85, trampling gate crashers, etc.) I like to think of these forums as being free of the idiots, a gathering of folks into it for the right reasons. I hope we can get back to this place. Thanks to Mary E for cleaning up the mess. Let's try to leave nothing but educated passionate footprints.

Garcia Live, Vol 4. Start the spin this evenin'. BTW-saw Robert Hunter is appearing at Newport Folk Festival. Saw him last time around in Boston-great show. Listened to the CSNY 74 1 disc compilation from the new box set. Nice versions of some of the more well known songs on this 1 disc version. Ironically it makes me apprec. the Dead all that much more-less hype, more jams, more chances taken, less politics, more timeless IMHO.

Yep. Bolo, same first letter as Blair. J is the 10th letter of the alphabet. 24, or 2 + 4, = 6 6 + 6 = 12. Subtract 12 from the number of letters in the alphabet (26) and you get 14. Take the 4 from Bolo's name, and subtract it from 14, and you get 10 (J!) It's obvious! (The "olo" is just there to confuse us)

Who cares who or what message started it? Please respect a very good moderator in Marye and just let the back-and-forth end. Marye does a great job and rarely gets involved in these spats between members. She isn't banning you guys, just saying cut it out. Now, where is the DaP11 announcement? The timing of this box announcement really will leave DaP11 little space of its own. I am sure it will get the love it deserves, but I wonder if some non-subscribers will have to forgo purchasing because of this $250 box already announced. Lastly, release of individual shows would be fantastic. My guess on the E72 individual releases is that there was a quick demand for the music-only box, but that did not live up the hype. So, they have them in-stock now. Personally, I love that the E72 tour is available individually-- I didn't get the box, but have been chipping away at shows. Someday, maybe I will have the tour...

This is pretty random, but Manuel Neuer is Germany's Goalkeeper. His name is abbreviated Ma. Neuer. And his nickname is "The Horse" Ma. Neuer. That is total BS. Of course his last name is pronounced "Noyer."

Individual Spring 1990 shows available for download?

Do we know if more than the entire box and the Branford show is available for individual purchase? I want several of the shows with a Branford hardcopy but not necessarily a complete run...

Hey Fennario - how does JGBv4 compare to Pure Jerry Warner?

Fennario, How does the JGB Vol 4 compare to the Pure Jerry Warner Theatre Release? I love the Warner version of Mission - just bursting of energy and my wife loves Midnight Moonlight, so the second disc gets a lot of rotation in the car. Trying to figure where to spend my grateful music dollar... Music in play: Box TOO, JGB Vol4, GDMovie Soundtrack, SSDD, new CSNY box, Led Zep remasters, E72 boxset - Love it all, but can't get it all. Listening to the Spring 90 shows from bttree/archive, digging what I'm hearing thus far...

Pure Jerry

I missed out on the Pure Jerry which is one reason this release makes me so happy. One caveat: It's missing the last few minutes of Midnight Moonlight according to the small print on the CD case if that matters to anyone (tape apparently ran out). I'm sure it does matter to some of you :) IMHO It's worth it for the piano playing alone. Keith and Ozzie must have been competing for Jerry's approval!

If you're thinking of the CSNY box, I'd say go for it. It's fantastic. Sure, it was cleaned up a bit by Nash, but the music is phenomenal. It's a nice portrait of the tour. The single disc version at Best Buy isn't too shabby a sampler, but the full three set summary is worth the cash. I've had it in since I bought it last week.

I bought the single disc from Amazon and it came with Auto Rip. The auto rip included all 40 tracks - YMMV of course.
