How come phish can go to the same venues and sell tix for half as much? their both capable of selling them out, so whats the diff? Willie nelson's playin in greensboro same venue and the high end tix are 75. All im sayin is if you look at the venues the dead are playin and look at some of the tix prices from the other bands, it can be held cheaper than what their askin. Granted some bands are asking for more, almost seems like their more expensive for nostalgic purposes just cause they have been around. To me it just seems to go against the philosophy the dead once stood for. sorry for being in a bad mood about this but im bummed i can only afford to go to one show now itstead of 5

    Price whining
Let's compare entertainment dollar values: NHL Hockey (Los Angeles Kings): A small number of tickets sell at $24 (obstructed nosebleed seats); standing room admission is $46; everything else ranges from $75 - 280 per seat. NBA (Lakers): obstructed nosebleeds at $10; everything else skyrockets to a peak of $2,600 for courtside. (Clippers) same except for priciest tix cap out at $1,350. This is PER GAME. All of the Kings, Lakers, and Clippers home games can be seen live on TV, which makes me wonder why in the hell ANYBODY would pay ANYTHING in order to fight downtown traffic, go to a crappy neighborhood at night, pay big bucks to park, and shell out $9 for a beer. The national touring company of The Phantom of the Opera is coming up at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles with ticket prices starting at $29.50 (FAR back rows in balcony) and going up to $126.50. In New York, on Broadway, Disney's The Lion King ranges from $61.50 to $121.50; Wicked is going from $50 to $110; a Saturday performance of West Side Story will run you from $45 to $120 (and more, for "premium" seating). Even a regional touring company musical production is pricey--I shelled out $65 (top price) per ticket to see an excellent touring production of RENT back in November (their cheap seats--WAY in the back of the balcony--were $38). Granted, I recently saw Johnny Winter (with two decent opening acts, over 3 hours of music in all) at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA, for a paltry $25, but despite Johnny's status as a rock/blues deity and Woodstock veteran, he can usually only draw about 200 fans to a gig these days (which is a crime--he is still an incredible musician). The days of the $4.50 ticket are long gone. Sure, the band COULD have chosen to play football stadiums and kept ticket prices down to $25 each, but that would have been a BIG gamble, because any venue that ONLY sold 25,000 tickets would be a money loser for them. Big concerts are expensive to run, what with the venues charging FAT rental fees (they could afford lower rentals back in the days when arena concerts were so common that a venue like The Forum would be in use over 300 days per year, but "big" concerts are rare these days). The ticket prices for The Dead are based on the band needing to clear a profit at the end of the tour, and it is probable that they have taken out a bank loan to cover the costs of renting all of those halls at once, hiring all of the trucks, renting whatever stage equipment they need to add to their setup, purchasing LOTS of insurance, and guaranteeing the wages of the roadies and supporting musicians--if that is the case, then a condition of their loan could very well be a minimum ticket price to help guarantee repayment. All told, they are probably looking at a net profit for the "core four" members of the band of about $10 a seat, assuming about 80% ticket sales at each venue. That's $2.50 per individual (they'll clear a lot more if all the shows sell out). It's quite conceivable that Warren Haynes (and maybe even Jeff Chimenti) will pocket more money at the end of the tour than will Bobby, Phil, Mickey, or Billy, since he's probably hired on at a guarantee per show rather than taking a slice of the pie. Hell, it's even possible that the individual members of The Dead will LOSE money on this tour, if all the ticket whiners boycott the shows, because THEY have to guarantee the payouts, and it's probable that the break-even number will be around 70 - 75% of capacity sales. Remember--100% of capacity sales is IMPOSSIBLE, due to the hundreds of promotional (radio giveaways and promoter freebies), courtesy (friends/family of the band) and press tickets given out at each show. This isn't Madoff, and it's not Exxon/Mobil. It's The Dead.

I should call in sick to work on the 13th so I don't have any of those pesky work-related distractions that day! I would just die if my boss walked into my office at 8:55 and said there was some emergency to take care of! Stupid work always messing up my schedule... Worked through Ticketmaster, and followed the same path that most presales work: you go online during the presale, type in a password (which I assume will be available at this site), and buy as normal. Business as usual, as long as you have the presale password. I have a hard time believing that Dead.net will actually be running the presale (a scary proposition, as I doubt that they could handle the volume). I'm also guessing that the countdown clock is more general than real (Ticketmaster would set the on-sale time, which would usually be 10 or 11 am EST). But what do I know? We could be breaking new ground here. I'm remaining calm, but the tension IS starting to seep through at the edges....based on other commitments, if I can't make Greensboro, I'm gonna get shut out of this thing. That AIN'T going to happen...

I'm checking my email every other minute to see if any passwords or annoucements have been made. It's a double edge sword...I'm sooooo excited, but I"m getting really anxious about ticket availability and getting my hands on some. I love it though...makes me feel alive!!!

So wait, if they send out passwords by email they most likely will send to my home email address and I can't access from work. Hopefully they can send out this weekend if that's how they decide to do it.

Thanks for the presale info. I can't imagine the volume of online ticket requests. This should be an interesting deal. Some shows will be an impossible ticket (e.g. Shoreline), and the others will be very difficult...at least this is my thinking.

I was reading an earlier post that suggested what will most likely happen is Dead.net will give out a password with which you will use when you buy the pre-sale tix through ticketmaster. It will ask for a password in order to purchase the tix before the general sale on the 23rd. I think that is how it will work...I think ;o)

..that Dead.net asked us to sign up for a reason. I think they will come through and we'll all get the password and/or further instructions emailed to us soon. I am surprised that most of you have never heard of a pre-sale. Pretty much any band with a decent size and/or extremely loyal fan base does this now-a-days. The pre-sale just gives these loyal fans a chance to jump on tickets before the general public i.e. people who don't checkout Dead.net daily :-) If you miss out on the pre-sale for whatever reason you can do the mail order or just get tickets when they go on sale to the general public. It is just another tool to get tickets, it's nothing more than that. I think the Dead are going to find out (which they should have all ready known) that they could have played at least 2 nights at each venue. Yuppers, rowdyroddy, I wanted these two tix..I called ticketmasters and they referred me to their sister site, ticketsnow.com..I'm sure I paid the 'price'..yet the price is whatever it's worth..and to me the price is 'priceless'..ticketsnow.com are sending the tix out by fed express by 1/13/09. Ah..cassidysdada..DO IT!! Let her have an alternative/altering experience!! I couldn't sleep at all last night..was so pumped..a once in a life time experience with my beautiful son and me! What more could I ask..it will probably never happen again..I'm 56, my precious, wonder-filled son is 19! My students at the high school where I teach were blown away and envious to say the least..!! I can get better seats for a fraction of the cost getting tickets the normal way. TicketsNow is a broker that I would only use when the venue is completely sold out and I was desperate enough to pay up to $600 a seat. The thing with them is you could use them as a last resort not a first! I guess it just leaves more "normal" tickets for the rest of us to get so go for it! :-) "Everybody's braggin' and drinking that wine, I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines. In all likelihood, the presale wil involve GDTS. Ticketmaster will kick-in a week or so later. Ticketmaster may have a separate presale where a password is utilized. I can't imagine Ticketmaster will be a part of the dead.net presale offer (see first sentence above). Most of all, remember Jerry Garcia has passed away and nothing's gonna bring him back; therefore, recognize now that Warren Haynes will be pickin that lead guitar and belting-out many of Jerry's vocals. ....one more thing I just gotta say, I need a miracle, everyday.....

Found an article with Phish's schedule (at least the start of the summer part), note the open dates on Bonnaroo weekend -- Bonnaroo should announce their lineup in a few weeks. Sure would be a good place for the Dead to launch a summer tour! Do you need to be a registered deadhead for presale?
user picture

seemed to me the register thing was just to get an email with info about the tour / sales. free to do that, and you do not even have to give personal info if you don't want to, so why not register, man? I took a peek at that ticketBlow . com site, what a crock of shit! scalper site to be avoided by all means, seems to me, ticketmaster (and thier subsideary company) wants to maximize profits from mooks willing to fork over buckets of cash for seats,. seems to me, they don't even really know which seats you would get, most of the listings I peeked at said something like, this section or equivilent seats or upgraded... it is a major bummer and buzz-negator that we get a hint at a pre-sale but no details and no info what to do and everyone is running around in circles chasing their tails speculating. come on dead . net, let us know the skinny! please, pretty please with sugar on top! the gdts mail order tix will also start on Jan 13th, but I reckon that means your envelope needs to be post-marked on that date and not before and on that date they will tell you how much the tix cost. where are the all night post-offices anyways?? does this mean Hawaii heads have an advantage with the time difference?? did either of the Obama rallys actually 'sell out'?? OK, somewhere in Pa whereever that was ain't Shorline or MSG but.... I really do not think getting 'in' will be a problem with these shows. even a few weeks before NYE they weren't sold out through ticketmaster for the RatDog / Phil shows, and the Graham Civic Center is something like only 7,000 seats. this ain't the touch head era no more, folks. peace.

May have been mentioned above.... Band on stage will be the same as the "Wave That Flag" tour six or eight years ago. The band plus Haynes and the Ratdog keyboard dude. They were great! Wait till you hear Warren Haynes sing Morning Dew, you'll melt even without spiritual aids.

When I logged in today I saw that the countdown clock had been reset--it was previously set to 1:00 a. m. EST on 1/13/09 and 10:00 pm on 1/12/09 PST (no advantage there for the west coast, just the normal 3 hour difference in time zones), but as of today it's set to go off at 9:00 a. m. PST and 12:00 noon EST on the 13th. I suppose that it's a sensible thing to do, since our day jobs (notice how many of us are employed doing something other than selling tie-dyes and wind chimes in the parking lot these days?) will keep a LOT of folks off the computer, thereby keeping TicketMaster from crashing from overuse... I'm not sure that the firewall at my work will let me get through. Guess I'll have to try to have my wife do it (but she's NOT an ace on the computer...). Calling in sick isn't an option--I'm a teacher, and it's the end of the semester (can't really afford to turn the class over to a substitute). Ugh.

I finally broke and went out to buy a new computer (old one crapped the bed) and hooked myself up to the net...finally back in business! Can't friggin' wait!!! I totally understand this is not the touch era cc eoj but some of us folks are planning for multiple shows and are cordinating several people all over the US to purchase tix, we are waiting to see what shows are going to GA Floor/whole arena, what the prices are going to be, LA had the highest reserved to be $89 dollars, what shows we need to purchase first and what shows we can wait till later, some of the reserved shows we want to be/dance together, etc.... Most of us have to work Tuesday and some dont, we might need to send money to the folks that arent working to purchase tix. I was just hoping for an earlier announcment.

Totally understand cc eoj about this not being the Touch era, but some of us are planning multiple shows and we have folks all over the US planning on buying tix, we would like to know what shows are going to Resevered, GA floor, GA whole venue etc. We also need to know how much tix are going to be just in case we need to send someone money, most of us are working Tuesday but some are taking off to send out mail orders/buy online. We want to know what shows we can wait to purchase and what shows might sell out fast, some of the resevred shows we want to sit together. Most of us are not worried about selling out, we just want to get our proverbial ducks in a row. Nothing wrong with a little planning.

I am planning on seeing as many of the shows as possible but I only have budget for about half the shows. When I used to tour back in the 80's and 90's I sold blueberry pancakes at the campsites near the venues and lunch on the lots. I have heard that lot vending tolerance has changed alot. I could use some tips on best ways to make it around cheaply nowdays. I dont sell drugs, but I have no issues selling anything else that makes the trip affordable.42% of all statistics are made up.

I decided to joing the forums here and when I did do that I got e-mail confirming account and password so I belive I am registered since I was acknowledged..Thanks for the heads up... I have a scenario and would like to ask other for input.. My cousin left for Thailand November 20 and isn't due back until January 20th...He has been a huge DeadHead for years and turned me onto them in the 80's..He moved out from the East Coast early 90's and has floted between Northern CA, Or & Wa..He works parks so his job is seasonal and the last job he worked was Mt Rainier..He left his van at my place but is talking about posibly moving to Eugene or Portland when he gets back..I can't get hold of him before the presale but he will be in a week after they go on sale..My instinct and heart tells me to get him a ticket but funds are low and I am not sure he can definately go to the show... Should I just go ahead and get him a ticket ??? If he can't come through or make the show do you think I can get face back for the seat since it will be lawn general admission ???? Thanks all I am also wondering if there will be a section on here or maybe I haven't found it on here that allows people to sell tickets but only @ face to avoid scalping

I for one would like to know what the price range of the tickets are gonna be so i can determine if i can do a leg of the tour or just one show. Just as putting a tour together takes planning, it takes planning for people to get to em also. Throw a dog a bone cause im definitely not picking up any synchronicity from the band at the moment!

It's been 20 years for me ... how's the sound these days? I'll go to the DC show, but would also like to hit one of the NYC/Philly area shows. Any guidance on where? The Garden would be fun, but I'd also hit Nassau, Brendan Byrne (Izod? WTF?), The Spectrum, even Wilkes-Barre (surprise appearance by Joe Biden at that one?) if people say they're sweet. As an old man, I imagine I'll be up high, so tips on where to sit away from the floor but still hear and see gratefully appreciated. So excited about what's happening. All the intense music, the new musicians, it's like a phoenix ...
