I dream of composing some pieces as well but as I can't read music or understand the theories of classical/orchestral composition so it may be quite some time-with the miracle of modern midi technology though I may slowly build up to some-guess I'll keep working on the rock and roll (a few of my songs are quite orchestrated come to think of it....). Rasta Billy there are some really terrific lyrics you have there. They are enjoyable just as a read and that is some feat to my mind; for a lyric to read as well as it sings! Well done!

    I'm a composer now...
    The obligations of having six children have been considerable, but in the last few years, ideas which were there in the background, i.e., there all along, have been getting kind of more coherent and insistent; and I realised that if I don't do anything about those dreams, nothing would happen; so I'm now writing, and it's happening very fast. The pieces I'm working on (Many mansions for 4 pianos and Memoria for string quartet, soprano, and tubular bells) are in certain ways connected with the Gulf war and the greed and sorrow that have precipitated it and followed it. I served as a soldier in the first war in the early 1990's and a lot of the things that happened emotionally in that time were difficult - and in many ways the music comes from the memories of that tension and conflict. If anyone wants to see what this stuff looks like, or ask me anything about it, or the war, drop me a message - mind you, the kids make my life difficult and complicated - but fun! so I might be a bit occupied. There are other pieces on the way, mostly influenced by Bartok, Debussy, Jacob Druckmann, and Dick's Picks No 5.. and gospel music from when I was a kid. I'm going to publish a few pages from each piece soon, probably on http://slugger.myfriendsreunited.com. Slugger was my army nickname... . "Anything can happen in the next half-hour!

    Country Rock in the Deep South (of Italy)
    Our band, the indefatigable Big Daddy Lawman, is currently the only band in the south of Italy (to our knowledge) that is producing three part harmony country rock. We even have the sheer nerve to take on some Dead tunes - Don't Ease Me In, Know You Rider, Candyman, Ripple - as well as covers of Doug Sahm, Merle Haggard, Commander Cody, Neil Young, Byrds, Burritos, Gram Parsons,Townes Van Zandt, Gene Clark, Dylan, Band, Jayhawks & Buffalo Springfield. Our neighbours dig us the most, especially during our 4 hour Saturday rehearsals. Original material currently being polished for studio recording! Watch this space if you're still wearing your cowboy boots!

    Free Beer at Exit 80
    Just about 7 years of playing in the band, unbelievable. We are from Roslyn WA (Northern Exposure's Cicely Alaska) and play an eclectic mix of covers and originals. At first we couldn't figure out what to call ourselves, so just before our first gig the bar manager says "so what are we going to call you, Free Beer?" and it stuck. We tried to change it many times for a number of reasons, especially trying to book gigs outside of Roslyn, not to many places want "Free Beer" printed outside their establishment. Exit 80 was our last attempt and it sort of stood the test of time. So really we have three names (1) Free Beer at Exit 80, (2) Free Beer, or (3) Exit 80, its a slight case of identity crisis. A couple of us are Heads and try to point us in that direction. I prefer the experimental aspect of playing music, what's life without a few risks. Sometimes we have our moments, and I guess that's what keeps me going. There are few feelings that can compare with meshing musically with people to the point when the "music plays the band."     The Grateful Dead to me
    The Grateful Dead The Grateful Dead where an amazing experience. To this day I can feel what a show felt like. The sound of a train chugging along and feeling the power that just descended onto this far away city for a couple days. When I would visit Northern Cali just North of San Fran when I was twisting and turning on those dusty roads in the middle of nowhere on the way to visit friends, I would feel the power and the influence of the Grateful Dead. The positive vibes and the thought of a complex world and knowledge truly drew me in after the music had enlightened me. The Grateful Dead scene ended as we knew it in 1995, but this complex and influential world is carried on. Everyone on this site is evidence to this. It’s strange that I perceive the word "complex' as being a negative notion these days, but when I speak of complex in this comment it has more of a positive and discovering overtone to it. Anyway, this world was carried forward in my life after the Dead stopped touring until I could not hold on any longer. The bus stopped for me while I was back stage "Clinic" at my last Phish show in Mountain View Cali 2000, as I found myself disenchanted with my connection to Phish which extended beyond 175 + shows. It was not just Phish’s fault it was just the need for change and everyone who has followed similar foot steps can attest to this. The road is for gamblers and as good as we may at surviving the end has to come and you must turn the page. I my bones need some patching and books seemed the way to patch them and whenever I lifted my head from the books I jumped on an airplane to faraway places and then returned to the States and studied more. I have a compulsive personality so when I do something I get into it and there is no stopping me from finding the core. This too was influenced by the Dead because I always related the GD to intelligence and far away places and the Core. I remember reading Relex and there was a section called “We Are Everywhere,” and we are and there are reasons why we are everywhere. These days I listen to a lot of Dead and Jazz. As there is a good Jazz club in town and it is actually the oldest Jazz club in China so it has a lot of history to it as well. Gangsters and the Shanghai underworld back in the 20s and 30’s. I recall the first time I went to a Jazz club. The decision to go to this club, knowing that I was way underage and there was no way that I could have anything other than a cup of coffee, was based on the fact that I wanted to get closer to the music of the Grateful Dead. To this very day the Grateful Dead influence me and I hope that my children embrace this experience as much as I had. So far so good! Hi Everybody, I finally have a myspace page any comments and friend requests are appreciated. I've been a Grateful Dead fan or "deadhead" since the mid 80's or so and never could get enough. I'm also a active trader and did some taping of GD and other bands, so if anybody wants to trade that's cool with me. I'm interested in getting some contacts with anybody REAL in the music biz/established recording labels. I'm currently in the process of recording a original pop/rock project that hopefully will be released by summer 2009. I have a request for my fine fellow Dead forum ladies and gents.......... A local public radio station called WYCE who supports local bands has an online vote for their awards ceremony called "The Jammie Awards". This is the 10th year and one of the projects I'm involved with is up for awards in a few catagories, the biggest being a peoples choice for best local album and best new band. The band I'm involved with is called "The Lynn Thompson Band". This year WYCE is doing an online vote for the big award, which The Lynn Thompson Band is up for. A little backstory on the local music scene here in Grand Rapids is that it has become very cliqueish over the last few years and it's really tough to get gigs and publicity here, especially if the band plays mostly original music. A very select group of bands seem to have a monopoly on the local scene and it would be great to see a total underdog band (such as The Lynn Thompson Band) win. ...........so, if anyone has a couple of spare seconds while browsing this, go to the link below to WYCE and vote for (the) Lynn Thompson Band. Strange Trip is a 5 piece band out of Atlanta, GA. Thier influences include (but not limited to) the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Santana, Phish and Ratdog. Add a little splash of Southern rock and a few drops of country and you've got Strange Trip. Strange Trip is comprised of veteran rhythm guitarist Allen Peacock (Blue Rufus, Rainbow Zen), bassist Ken Dunn (Simply Southern), guitarist Ryan Kumar, up and coming vocalist Jessica Stanley and drummer Danny Waller (Simply Southern). Peacock,the product of the early '90's Philadelphia music scene, anchors this ecclectic Quintet, whose age range goes from 25 - 40. Dunn & Waller, who bring a southern edge to the table, honed thier skills for many years in the Metro-Atlanta club staple Simply Southern. we're going by the name The Monterey Jacks. we're a three piece rock band from California. when we play live, we've done a few of the Dead's tunes (close to the only covers we do), but rehearsing we're always playing their stuff. stella blue, the eleven (which we do with zeppelin's four sticks, which is in 5 and 6... which adds up to 11!) , loser, deal, mr charlie, the other one, etc... i bought this great fender amp and about a month later learned it was a newer model very similar to something Jerry Garcia used to use. so that's kept me in a good mood for a long time. you can check us out on myspace HERE SHORELINE!!!

Dr. T of the Art Punk Band I am very interested in the answer to Brother Martin's question about covering songs. Some of you will recall, that in Sept. he asked: "Here's the thing....the fat cats have been tightening up the intellectual property laws, and I can no longer just post Beatles songs without paying some agency in New York, even though I am not selling them, just making them available for free download...I have direct agreements with Richard Thompson and with Kate Wolf's estate that it's OK for me to post my covers of their songs....is this permission implicit with the Dead's work (along with taping), or do I need to ask somebody?" I think the legal issues here are tricky. When bands sell albums with cover songs, part of the revenues go to the songwriter or company within the music industry that manages the property rights to the song. When bands perform perform cover songs at performances, or a song is played on the radio or Music services like Rhapsody or Napster, my understanding is that some revenues are provided to the songwriter as well--x cents per stream, download, etc. I think state licensing fees for musical performances might also provide revenues back to the song management company. I think the taping at Dead shows, which the band actively encouraged--and helped endear them to many a listener--is different. They chose not to exercise their (legal and potentially enforceable) rights to uses of their performances in order to encourage music sharing. In doing so, they showed listeners how they valued community over profit. It is one reason they are legends in the music world. Cover songs are numerous on Myspace and You Tube, I presume without any compensation to the songwriter--but I think a legal dispute is still on-going related to this, and who knows how this may turn out? Because of the uncertainty about this issue, my band decided to only place originals on our myspace page (myspace/artpunkband) or our You Tube page. But I would prefer to have a mix of originals and covers--we love playing Ripple, Sugaree, Uncle John's Band, US Blues, and Box of Rain, as well as a variety of Kinks, Beatles, Dylan, Neil Young covers. Copyrights do expire, and songs eventually become part of the public domain--when anyone can use--but this takes a long time, especially in the United States. In Europe, I think, copyrights expire after 50 years, but in the US copyrights remain in effect for songs written in 1923 or later. There are some exceptions when songs are placed on the public domain by the writer---and there are websites where you can look up if a song is on the Public Domain. Two songs that we cover and have recorded versions of are Shady Grove and Lord Franklin (Pentangle): these songs, I believe, were written long before 1923 and are listed as public domain songs, so we would not have concerns about using these songs. I think it is a shame that property rights on songs are enforced to this extent and remain in effect for so long. We had recorded a song "Electric Cottenfields" that was adapted from the old Ledbelly song (1941), but done with a rough electric guitar wall of sound effect. It was only about 40 seconds long--but we decided not to take a chance with copyright enfringement after seeing the copyright was still in effect. We took it off before the album was placed on line. We were going to put another song "Jet Plane Blues" on the album-- which is basically the old folk song done in a minor electric blues format--try it--you might find that this works well. But "Jet Plane" is still under copyright protection as well, so we did not include it. The copyright issue was one reason we are now participating with the Creative Commons Music Community---the music site is Jamendo.com. All music placed on line is always 100% free for streaming or downloading, and all participating musicians agree to loosen the copyright restrictions over the music they place on line to encourage sharing. Others are always free to copy, share, or cover their music. You might find some interesting music on the Jamendo site to cover. So check it out. And if you do, please listen or download (always free) our new album, "Uncommon Creations", by "The Art Punk Band" on Jamendo.com. I play original Dead fusion...folk, rock, country, blues and jazz infused with 40 years of Dead influence. I currently sing and play guitar as a duet with guitarist Ed Munson, but also have a variety of great musicians to play with when I'm on the road. I most recenty have been sitting in with Donna Jean and the Tricksters, Crazy Fingers, and several local bands. I created a band a few months back with one of my best buddies, and we decided on a name for the band. But whoever was to be the singer in the band had there name in the un-official band name, nobody wanted to be the singer, so me playing lead guitar took up singing also. So, in about one week, Ryan Moore and the Merry Pranksters was born. Well, I have a very strange taste in music. I listen to about everything, but of course anything Dead related would be what I am most interested in. It' very hard to develop a sound that revolves around the Grateful Dead, Tool, Sunn O))), Sage Francis, Into The Moat, and other various non-relating bands. So, as we write material and record things, I intend to push the musical genre not into one direction, but what seems to be in all directions at once. We are currently recording our first song, it's coming along very smoothly and once we upload to a site I will post the link on here. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy it.

This exercise in logic started as a joke but evolved. Here's how it goes. What if - people loved your music but were afraid to come to your show? You know, because it was all thuged out like the Dead were when they first started with Hell's Angels, bare breasts, free acid, and weed. No problemo!! With today's technology, you could buy tickets over the phone or over the internet, not go to the show, and then download the show off of the internet. Just immagine if a fan wanted to show his appreciation for the iconoblasting effort of his favorite band and contributed to their well being without expecting a show. Personally, I think it would be cool to play a mostly empty stadium. Just a few bikers and such that would let me experiment with really wierd stuff so I could prepare for playing, "Space". All the people who hired me can expect is for me to get pepole to pay for tickets. As long as the money keeps rolling in it's all good . . . and people should eventually start to show up at shows. That would be way cool.

Now I live in south Florida and play mainly original Folk Rock music. My influences include the Beatles and the Dead. So far, I've released 2 CD's. And I love Egypt, been there 9 times, many interesting stories to tell... We play a variety of covers - a lot of Neil Young, some Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, well, you get the idea. We also do some originals. Nothing serious 1-2 a month in the local bars. We met at a local open mic night and evolved from acoustic duos/trios to a five piece electric band. Just a lot of fun. http://www.myspace.com/pharmaceuticalsandnature. A few of us are trying to get a bluegrass band going. I'm playing fiddle, acoustic guitar; another's on banjo, another on guitar and mandolin. We'll see how things work out. But how does this relate to the Dead? Often "Friend of the Devil" or "I Know You Rider" and others will be played. And just last week the banjo player started in with "Lonesome Road Blues!" "Aha!" I said, I know this one, and I sang it as I've heard it so often on one of my live Dead recordings. There's a ton of Dead stuff which lends itself to a bluegrass interpretation. (And I do enjoy much of their electric stuff, too, but I just concentrate on the acoustic when I'm playing.) Indeed, at last year's California Bluegrass Campout this fine guitarist played a smooth "Ripple." Very nice. By the way, I'm new, so hello to all. Humbled

Hey guys i just joined a band with my friends that i have been jamming with for about a couple months. We were strawberry jam but we changed our name to Odacious Green. We are all good friends and we play a bunch of our own originals that we jam too but we do many grateful dead, some allman brothers and some phish covers as well. We are working on getting more music up on the myspace, even some of our dead covers. We cover many dead songs which is pretty cool because there are like very few bands from my area that even listen to the dead. We do Scarlet > Fire China > Rider Franklins Tower Bertha and many songs from the very best of like ripple, friend of the devil, uncle johns band, box of rain. we are currently working on Help > Slip > Frank If anyone that is around Philly can help us out with shows, please let me know

San Francisco based band thats been following the 2009 spring tour in a 1964 IH schoolieThey have been playing the lots. I caught them at the Greensboro, East Rutherford, and Philly shows. She and guitarist Ed Munson are putting a fall 2009 tour together, and working on next year's festival bookings. For more info, contact Toni at tonibrown1@aol.com. Toni is a singer/songwriter/guitarist, and has toured with many members of the Dead and the extended family. She was publisher of Relix Magazine from 1979-2000, and is active in the music world, not only as a musician, but as a publicist, promoter and is always helping bands get out into the world.

We here at Jerry Rig labs all love playing the Dead's music. We've kept this music in our lives non-stop. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are sometimes starved for the Dead's music. This has only made us hungrier and eager to feast. Like the Dead, we do our share of cover tunes by Dylan, The Band, The Beatles, with names like Dear Prudence, Up on Cripple Creek, and Tangled up in Blue. Our bag of goodies includes about 100 songs now, including over 2 dozen originals written over the past few years. Inspired by our heroes, we stand on the shoulders of giants. Our music ranges from the airy fun of "Hey Sunshine" to downright anger expressed in "Oceans of Greed". Throw in a few original instrumental jams, like "B9" or "Tonal Solstice Calyx" and you can see it gets pretty deep in here.
