    Rothbury Dead -- Sustainable Camping?
I think it's way cool to have green, sustainable camping at a four day event, but after looking at the VIP packages I'd have to say that the energy footprint for this festival is going to be a monster. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to lay our the $3400 for a safari tent with all the furnishings and electricity, air-conditioned bathrooms and showers and trucked in ice as well as the $118 vig for "shipping & handling" charges. I just wouldn't want anyone to think it was green, sustainable camping. Conspicuous consumption is just so retro these days, what with Feed The Children leading convoys of food into cities and all.... Wouldn't you just love to hire two white-jacketed eunuch nubians with black linen towels over their arms and say "Blend us up two more top-shelf ritas and bring us the mirror after you finish slicing & dicing. Chop-chop boys!"

Nice! Hey now how do you import youtube vids like that? I tried to put one in a post in dead.net and all it did was paste the web link to youtube... Just wondering how you get the whole video like that? "When the smoke has cleared she said, that's what she said to me. You're gonna want a bed to lay your head and a little sympathy"

DRUMHEAD. Did you get your name from banging your head against the wall as a child? Stopped counting after my 500th show. Don't need some poser who didn't even see Jerry telling me about the Dead. The Greedful Dead(Phil, Bob, Mickey and Billy) are in it for the money only. If you want to be played for a fool, that's your problem, not mine. Never saw Phish.

You probably complained at all 500+ shows about the ticket prices so whats changed. 1969 Damn 5 bucks for the dead what a ripoff 1979 Damn 10 bucks for the dead what a ripoff 1989 Damn 20 bucks for the dead what a ripoff 1999 Damn 50 bucks for "the other ones" what a ripoff 2009 Damn 100 bucks for the dead what a ripoff Like I said in a previous post, Leave the yurt and the commune for a few minutes. You'll see nothing is cheap. Not that it really matters as you probably complain about the prices of everything. Gas, electricity, beer, smoke. Better yet stay on the commune as no one on here wants to hear 1 single word of complaint from you.

AWEST27 - Mean People Suck! Ever wonder why JGB didn't quite get the Dead sound. Hey they sounded great and I loved JGB but it's Jerry, And Bob, And Phil, And Billy, And Mickey that made the Grateful Dead. It was a musical conversation between the 5 of them along with whichever keyboard player they had. The bus came by and I got on... again! If the bus stopped for you when Jerry died then so be it. But doggin' on 4/5's of The Grateful Dead because ticket prices are higher... Please take your negative comments somewhere else.

Don't be so jealous of the fact that I saw the REAL dead, not the Greedful Dead. Bobby, Phil, Mickey and Billy were counting on fools like you. Way to go.

"I have no problem with ticket prices. I do have a problem with ineptitude."--tuned88 My sentiments exactly. I got through to the ticket order page (no waiting room) 15 minutes after the sale started. I tired to order ONE ticket for MSG floor. it said that it could not fufill my request, try a lower number of tickets (which would have been ZERO, heh heh) or try a different section. I got the same response for the 100 section. I don't think the floor or the 100 section sold out in the first 15 minutes, although it's possible. I just think that the site was totally inadequate and unprepared for this presale, which is confirmed by the stories here. I particularly feel sorry for the people who were on the cusp of getting their tickets, only to be told that they had timed out, through no fault of their own. So I sent in a MO to GDTS TOO for my shot at one ticket to MSG.

DRUMHEAD What about "Don't need some poser who didn't even see Jerry telling me about the Dead" did you not understand. These chumps are NOTHING w/o Jerry. Anyone who would be stupid enough to argue that never saw the Grateful Dead. Do you think they would have broken up if Bobby died? No way. Sorry that you never got to see the Grateful Dead. Tough break.

What is your problem with yurts and communes? If people choose a lifestyle they should not be mocked in this forum. Please stick to the topic and stop insulting people because you disagree with the type of life they choose. I thought part of being involved in this scene was to be open to others and not judge them. GRANTED Trey is no Jerry, but lets not knock phish, their music is alot different from the dead, they have there own style like rusred root, or string cheese ..etc... Any dead head should appriciate all types of music. I personally like phishes music, not to pleased with the crowd though, ive been to 3 phish shows and been ripped off in parking lot all three times. I dont hold it against the band though, truth of the matter is theres no LOVE in the crowd. PHISH IS NOT A DEAD SHOW!!!!!!!!! If any guppys are hittn the dead shows, PLEASE leave your BUNK items at home, this is a grateful tour, BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER, tickets are exspensive enuff, no sense in wasting money in the parking lot on something thats not real!! So... It's been 14 years since my last Dead show - I saw Mickey once a few years ago, and that was cool, but have spent more time being a parent and struggling to get by than being a DeadHead and getting down over the years. So I got pairs of "well, at least I'm in the show" tix for Fri in Albany and Sun in Worcester. Just physically didn't have the bread to get the good seats. so I am in the nose bleeds in Albany and side stage in Worcester. Yeah the price is too high for any band, let alone a "Dead" band without Jerry and who are pushing 70... but reading the hate and anger here I am a little horrified. Geez folks - these guys let us take their music and trade it for free for over three decades. Think about the money they lost doing that. Seriously... how many people here own a (purchased) copy of Built to Last or Go to Heaven? How many have at least several hundred hours of FREE bootlegs? I still have my Maxells and I still listen to them... When we were all on tour with these guys playing concerts is not how you made money in the music business folks - it is what you did to market your record sales, but we - the whole circus - did things differently, and they fed our fever with constant touring. Think about all the time they spent on the road - they "gave all they had to give, - how much WE'LL never know". There are other factors to consider too... I was at the Albany shows the last time the Grateful Dead played there and it was a mess. An embarrassing mess. I am sure the city of Albany is getting chunk of the pot, and I bet police will be out in force and security will be tight. Another thing to consider is that this is not a single band right now, and the band that will be playing has several different members that each have their own agents, etc. - Blaming the price on Bob is just incredibly outrageously unfair. I remember when ticket prices hit the 30.00 mark I was stunned, but I paid them and I went, and danced and sang, and soothed my soul. That 30 bucks was a greater percentage of my income at the time than even the 100 would be for me now, but perspectives change and so my wife and mother-in-law pitched in to buy tix for two shows for me as a birthday present. They got two tix for each night so I can bring my 15 year old son who has always wished he could have seen them. So I got Miracled - sort of - and it is just sinking in, that feeling I haven't felt in so long - I am going to see the DEAD I couldn't sleep last night...I remember thinking 14 years ago that I would give everything I owned and a couple fingers to see them one more time. Cheap at any price.

Tickets are a tad exorbitantly high and that's an issue this first time back. Maybe they'll come around again and heed some of what they are hearing and come down a bit but it is what it is and we all will have to adjust accordingly. Of and did I say stfu in advance? And that I love the Grateful Dead? Oh, OK, yes I do. Thanks. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * -enjoyin' the ride -There'll never be another Jerry

Only looking at ticket prices-- How can you not compare the Dead and The Phish. Both are doing a return to glory tour, both have deep roots in the community and both are what pretty much drive the community these days. Who else is bigger or was bigger then the Phish or the Dead?? So for one band who is all accounted for to charge 49.50 and the other who is missing a key element and has thus been replaced by Borin' Warren of all people (WTF!!!???!!!) to charge 75 it just seems as though someone screwed up big time. oops, there goes the boat, I messed up.

I've been reading the posts over the last couple of days about the shows and who's worthy and who saw how many shows. It's not about how many you saw, but how much you appreciated the ones you did see. If you don't want to pay 100 bucks for a ticket, then don't buy one and leave the seats for those of us happy to get in the door. Jerry was precious, but the dead would not have been the dead without Jerry, Bobby, Phil, Mickey, and Billy. You can add your choice of Pigpen, Keith and Donna, Vince, Hornsby etc., each was an intregal part in being the band we all know and love. Remember the definition of the Grateful Dead, and why the guys chose it to begin with. It's about Karma, it's about love, and it's about music. Standing in any arena, amphitheatre, or staduim and hearing EVERYONE in the place clap and sing NFA to the band until they come back for encore is something that you can't explain till you've been there. There was a long time when I couldn't listen to the boys because it hurt too much to miss them. After a good friend got me in to see Phil at the Nokia on Halloween, I've had my favorite shows shuffling for months. It's good to be back, and I'll take it any way I can get it. See you in Chicago and MSG.

Awest27 says:When did you see the Grateful Dead? Never as a band but saw all the others hundreds of times. Actually I was hanging with Bobby about 2 years ago at a Ratdog show. And not in some fan experience but as the promoter of the Concert. I am not JUST a Jerry Fan. I am a Grateful Dead Fan. Similarly I even enjoy a DSO show or The Schwag. What are you even doing here anyway? Didn't you just write this: With Jerry gone, who cares about the other leeches who he carried for 30 years.

Forget it jayhawkfrank - Awest27 is just a bitter old soul. I guess in his mind since he's seen 500+ shows that it equates to having more of an authoritarian view of things. It has to be that the boys are a bunch of greedy leeches and that we're a bunch of losers or else he'd be wrong in his sad view of his current state of being. Let him live in the past and give him what he needs... A Big Hug!

Spring may not work out but the fact they're out there gives me hope for humanity. My 1st show was St.Louis in 1970, and even though I will try Chicago, if I don't make it I'll be grateful for all those who do. I mean, they're so many DH's that haven't ever seen the boys, so if my missed seat goes to one of those folks, I'll be dancin' just because of that. Let's all have a grate time, celebrate in joy & love...and Summer at Alpine, please. Steve

If you really can't afford $100 then try the following. You have a few months to save! 1. Cash back at the pump In the past five months gasoline prices have dropped 56%, from an average price of $4.11 to $1.80 a gallon. Somehow, households found the money to pay the higher price and survive so now people should take that excess money they are saving and bank it. 2. Supper savings Americans will spend an average of $34 this year every time they go out to eat dinner, that's for one dinner, drink and gratuity; $76.00 if they live in one of the 20 most expensive cities. If a couple does that four times in a month the expense is close to $300 in low-cost areas and $600 in higher-cost regions, and if you have more than one drink or are treating family or friends, costs can add up quickly. 3. Renegotiate bills You may not be able to negotiate with the gas company or the electric company, but you can with credit cards, cable and phone services, among others. Do the homework and find out what competing cable companies, for example, are offering and ask your provider to renegotiate your bill. You may have to get through to a manager but Chatzky said she recently did this and got her monthly bill reduced by $50. 4. Smart shopping Retailers are poised to have one of the worst holiday shopping seasons in decades and are offering deep discounts to move merchandise. But smart shoppers can save even more money by hunting down coupons. Before ordering online or going to a store, go to sites like Couponcabin.com and Ultimatecoupons.com or Google the name of a store and often you'll get a coupon code to enter at checkout. You can save 10% to 20% or more on the total order or maybe get free shipping. There are also coupons to print out and take to the store for deeper discounts. And don't be afraid to pit one retailer against another by asking for a price match on sale items. 5. Keep the receipt It is important to hang on to all your store receipts and keep track of sales. Savvy shoppers can possibly save even more on purchases by checking back to see if the retailers lower prices even further. If that happens within two weeks of your purchase, most stores will credit you the difference. see you at the philadelphia spectrum may 2nd

All this comparison to other bands and price talk " They are not the best at what they do they are the only ones that do what they do" IMO while the "core four" have slipped somewaht recently their is NO denying that the product they deliver is awe inspiring. Case in point dating back to Bobby and Tom C at tower theater shortly after jerry passed, too SPAC july 4th in the rain, red rocks shows 03 and 04, little schoolgirl in AZ 04, Shoreline to end the 04 tour. AND yes i saw "jerry" over 75 times ...if you cup is empty... if your cup is full may it be again

Playing it right now, and its awsome. kinda resembles the early 70's shows, most of the shows are jamed out like 15 min or more. Minus jerrys singing you couldnt ask for more, it seems to be more crisp and with more energy than the last dead shows in the 90's. If its any sign of whats to be with this tour, than the music will be great. It would be cool if they did like DSO does and pick a past set list and play it, preferably from 73' since there tended to be alot of shows with 3 sets. I wasnt happy about the prices either but you wont regret it when your at the show, from now untill april is plenty of time to adjust your life style and be able to put some money back. Quit going out to eat, dont buy name brand food, hault all purchases besides bills, theres countless ways of coming up with the money. Think about the last thing you really needed or wanted but didnt really have the money to get it but you managed to aquire it. Most things are possible if you got enough gumption.

Ok, I have to put my two cents in now. Look, I've been shown the light many times through all kinds of music. That's the point....MUSIC. "People can you feel it, LOVE is in the air!" It doesn't matter if it's the Allman Bros, Phish, 311, James Brown, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Dave Matthews, Primus, (my fav) The Grateful Dead, Ratdog, Hank Williams, Ben Harper, Phil & Friends, Pearl Jam, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Merle Haggarand, The Beatles, and the list goes on and on and on! I t's not about being nasty to each other, hurling remarks to people, complaining, and projecting negative energy to rooms. That's why the Grateful Dead have shown me so much....we are all not perfect, we are all fucked up in some way, we are all good people at the same time. All of us carry a big torch showing people that you can have love for your brothers and sisters of this bright blue ball spinning, regardless of the other shit. It's about listening to the MUSIC and using what you need from it and leaving the rest. BE KIND. I actually like Phish the band....hate the parking lots and don't feel all the people there are true, but it's good music. That's why "Our" band is so special, there are dicks everywhere, but "Our" band brings us together like no one else before. "Our" band has taught many people after them to actually play music from the heart. "Our" band brings out the goo balls and grilled cheese sandwiches in people. LOVE. So please, pretty please with sugar on top show them that YOU are the EYES of the WORLD! <<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> _________________________________________________________ Will you come with me? I waded through a spate of postings from the last two days and have never seen so much negative energy. Until I read your note and a few right before it, I thought I was in some sort of bizarro world, not the dead.net boards. Hope you can see a few shows in this tour. For my part, I never intended to go anywhere near the on-line pre-sales thing. A Luddite at heart, I dutifully sent off a couple of brightly-colored envelopes to the friendly crew at GDTS, and I trust they'll take care of my friends and me (we're aiming for the two shows in Philly). Ticket prices? Higher than they used to be, for sure, but what isn't? Hell, I've gotta get from MN to PA and back, so tickets are the least of the expenses I've gotta deal with. But it'll get done, one way or another. Oh well, sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One man gathers what another man spills...
