I get a message that reads HTTP 500 Internal Server Error when I try to read new posts for the forum topics 'Got Questions Ask Here' and 'Technical Problems - Forums, Features, etc.' Other details read: Most likely causes: •The website is under maintenance. •The website has a programming error What you can try: Refresh the page. Go back to the previous page. More information This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying. Is anyone else getting that, too? Sometimes with this topic, I can't view new posts from the 'All Recent Posts' button. I have to go to forums, then the topic to view new entries. I can't view the 'Got Questions, Ask Here' thread at all. It'd be interesting to know the technical reasons behind these bugs, as I am quite fascinated by computers and coding (not that I have much exerience with it).

When a new feature is introduced in a forum like this, there's always going to be someone who tries to exploit it, so my guess is that there would be some blowback from a "Report Spam" button; it's almost too easy to imagine that some might find a thing like that to be useful in a flame war, for example.

...for a 'report spam' button. It's a really good one and should be implemented. Don't be surprised if some unforeseen leak in the dike would spring forth as a result of that however. This site reminds me a little of a Rube Goldberg contraption sometimes. tehehehehe. Lots of love, folks. Have a grateful day.

    > verification process...as well as the captcha...has slowed the spammage I agree with Mr. Pid's assessment. The type of spam I see here doesn't seem to be bot-posted. A person has to set up an account and then deal with the captcha; you can spam dead.net, but it's a very labor intensive process for a rather narrow niche. > a more stringent sign up and user verification process [to] deter these dope wads Such barriers to entry would also make it much more difficult for the non-spammers, which likely far outnumber the dope wads, as you call them, wilfredtjones. My suggestion would be to add a "Report Spam" button to each post, like on craigslist, which wouldn't reduce the number of spam posts, but which would make them easier for marye to find and eradicate.

Sure is tough paging thru the shows until you get to 2/21/73, the discover the Attendees heading doesn't work. Can dead.net repair the access to shows by year and list those who attended?I've asked for the photo upload mechanism to be repaired too: I've discontinued trying to post photos.

    Again,
I don't work here, I just hang out here so all I can do is guess. In one of my favorite bars in the world (McSorely's in NYC) there are a great many interesting artifacts hanging on the walls. One of them is a hand painted sign that reads, "Be Good or Be Gone." That concept, along with the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing seems to be the operant policy regarding user accounts here. Accounts that generate spam get nuked. As far as stiffening the new user accreditation process, culturally we as Deadheads have been all about openness and inclusion, so it would logically follow that any website for, by and about us should mirror that basic posture. Engage us constructively and we are highly likely to reciprocate. Act like a jerk and the probable outcome is that you will be either ignored to death or someone will decide that they are the instrument of Karma and deal with you, one way or another. Besides, I don't know how one might implement any sort of criteria for further qualifying potential users. Would they have to pass some sort of test or something? And test what? There's more than enough "Deader-Than-Thou" floating around for my taste as it is. I think you kinda have to leave the door open, wait 'til that deal comes round, and then don't let that deal go down. But that's just how I see it. Anybody else have any bright ideas?

krishna (et al.), the short answer is that normally posts are not moderated by sometimes our spam filter gets a little overexcited. So I check it periodically. At the moment what we're dealing with is 82 bazillion people on the site, which is probably causing the delay, but glad you got through okay.

I just assumed you were using shorter and shorter intervals for setting the cookie expiration dates. And if you really are just using cookies, and there is no server side session representation and thus no drain on server resources, why bother with having them expire at all? I bet we can all figure out how to log out if we want to. Of course if there are server side session objects, I could readily understand why you'd want to periodically clear out the deadwood. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

Don't know if this is the place to come to, but I am simply looking for a bulletin that was supposedly sent out about the status of mail order tix. A friend of mine sent it to me but I cannot find it ANYWHERE here or over at GDTOO. The only page over there has instructions and list of shows. I signed up for the email alert and didn't get ANYTHING till the VERY last mintue and I am a little bummed about that. Can anyone point me to a place that has the mail order status, if there is one? Or a number we can call? Thanks and hope every one got the tix they wanted! PLEASE DONT BUY FROM EBAY OR SCALPERS!

As said before, been using my ps3 to review topics and posts. The only thing I can not do is get into chat room. Do I need some sort of high speed internet? Is the ps3 capable of this? I have no problem getting into chat room on my computer. Is the nintendo wii the same way? Phatmoye

I have NO idea, you're definitely the first to come along and ask about this stuff. Up to now it's been Mac, PC or Linux. I think someone said elsewhere that the PS3 and the Wii depended on Sony and Nintendo sending an automated software update. I'm not familiar with either, but maybe go to the PS3 tech support board and ask.

The chat room is implemented in Flash, so people on PS3's or Wii's should check to see if they support Flash (*.swf) at all. If all you see if a big empty space where the chat session would normally be, it's probably due to lack of Flash support. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

that's pretty much what the tech guys said also, with the additional caveat that the Flash code GagaLive uses may not support Flash on portable devices at all. You guys are pioneers in this particular area, so keep us posted on your experience. Thanks!

Thank you both for info. Just when I thought the ps3 couldn't get any better, it ceeses to amaze me! Playstation network just updated and threw in a photo gallery! Its pretty cool, you can listen to any show or cd you want while it views all ur photos that you have downloaded on ur ps3. I must have atleast 150 shows on my ps3. The ps3 has either 4 or 6 USB ports, so i can transfer my shows to my computer using a flash USB (holds 2 GB). This thing just keeps gettin better and better.Phatmoye

I was in the vineyard this morning , walked away from the computer for a few minutes, and when i come back I could not change pages ,, I was re-directed to a site i never seen before .. it had a little napster looking logo on it and it also said dead.net on top of my browser ..so I had X-ed out of everything , and noticed that my shortcut on my desktop had changed from the freindley skull to the strange napster looking thing,, and the icon in my favorites was also changed .. I had to delete Dead.net from my desktop and my fav.s .. then i went to a completley diferent web page , manually entered www.dead.net , and it went straight to dead.net .. and now it seems to be all good ..except for that darn spam filter .... Just reporting this strangeness .... Have a nice day (eveing) ...

Hey there, Well it took about 3 hours and a bit of angst, however I solved the problem, I had to delete FlashPlayer and re-install, however, for some reason unknown to me IE would not let me download FlashPlayer from the website, I went through all thier suggestions and I still got nada, so since I have Mozilla Firefox on my PC i gave that a shot, 5 minutes later I had it installed and wala I was back in the chat room. The version I had on my pc must have gotten corrupted somehow - and no i haven't been looking at porn lol - I have no clue as to why I was not being allowed by Internet Explorer to download the program, just another microsoft mystery. Hopefully that is the end of my white screen story :-) Jean

Is the chat room shared by other web sites besides dead.net ?

Think not-but we got lots of new friends chatting nowadays. It also seems as if that after someone's in the chatroom for a longer amount of time, they no longer show up on the "who's online" list. Or sometimes anyhow. Some of the ways of the chatroom still seem kinda random and mysterious, or perhaps just to me :-D********************************** It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

The chat room uses a browser technology called Flash. If you're accessing the site with a regular computer and web browser you can get the appropriate plugin for your browser for free from Adobe's website. Anecdotal evidence suggests that if you're using a Wii or a PS3 to access the site that they do not support a recent enough version of Flash to access the chat room. How do you: 1. Put fan photos into your profile? I searched under the "Edit" area but could only change my personal information. 2. Post Youtube clips in a forum thread? Since there is no way to edit posts, I can't experiment. Many forums have the [yt] [/yt ] thing or the [/ youtube] thing . . . but I have no way of knowing how to embed short videos. 3. Post pictures in a forum thread. Is it the standard type of thing or is there something I don't know? Also, is there a way to edit posts that I'm just not getting? My ignorance in these areas is profound . . . I am in desperate need of education!! Thanks oddles!! -Eric

Fan photos can be uploaded by using the "Submit content" item in the nav stack to the left in the my dead.net section. Forum posts allow standard HTML syntax. Whether or not client browsers will properly render the tags is another story. Note that there is a Preview comment button you can use to assess how your post might render. Direct editing of committed posts by users is not an option. If you really want something altered, you could try sending a PM to our beloved mod Marye. As she has previously posted, no guarantee such requests will be implemented. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

Thanks tons for: 1. The HTML tip. I'm pretty familiar with HTML 2. The proof of my dumbness because of the preview button. Now I can use the scientific method of trial and error. I'm actually supposed to be quite intelligent . . . possibly "gifted" because my brother is. However, human error and plain dumbness is not alien to my procedings. So under the tour page posts someone will post a message. Three times now I've tried to reply but the link to their supposed name goes to a search page, when I manually input the name on a compose link within inbox, the name doesn't appear on the search list. How can an identity (member name) appear underlined atop a post, but then not be there to respond to, or find under a search? I've fiddled around and wonder if the name gets corrupted, like adding a space, or an erroneous digit at the end of their name when they post their message? Anyway,it's disconcerting cause I'm trying to respond to someone's need for tix. thanks so much, mark

one thing is that people can change their names pretty much on the fly. But a lot of them also include spaces or underscores or other none-too-visible characters in their names, too. If yu're having persistent issues with a particular person on this, lemme know and I'll look into it.

As many have had occasion to observe, the Fan Pix upload is not working just exactly perfect of late. Our intrepid tech Jonathan has made some tweaks that may help; if you continue to experience difficulties, please report details here. One complicating factor appears to be that there is some caching involved and it takes up to 10 minutes for the file to actually be written to the server. If you don't see your pic right away, that may be the issue, and it won't hurt to wait a bit before panicking and/or re-uploading the file half a dozen times. But we think there may be several issues happening here, so we would appreciate details on your experiences over the next few days while we're monitoring this. Thanks!

I wanted to check the venues that the Grateful Dead played in Portland Oregon for a series of geocaches I'm doing. But when I go to see where they were, I can go down to the city level, but when I check to see what venues there are, it comes up blank. All the page shows are the red triangles, with no hyperlink to the venues. Is this normal?? "All Who Wander Are Not Lost....."

but believe me, anything you post on the net is on Google forevermore regardless of whether I delete your account or not. And deleting your account does not delete your posts. So I don't think deleting your account would produce the desired effect. If you still want it nuked, no problem.
