    Reflections on a Tour
Well, the Spring Tour 2009 is in the bag and was definitely one for the books! That's for sure. I know a lot of people might think the Dead are dead without certain members, and to be honest, the last couple of tours the Dead have done were great experiences for me, but I always felt like people were "sitting in" to fill some big shoes left behind. Even Warren, in 2004, felt like he was filling in. So I went to the LA Forum show expecting what we got in 04. Oh how wrong I was! That first throat grabbing chord of the show was like the band was saying to everyone in the Forum, "Listen up people! We're not f*#cking around here, we're here to play so let's get down to it!" And then BOOM, right into that unreal VLB groove, with a beat that you just had to move to. I have been doing tours since the late 70's/early 80's and to my ears, this band has never been better. On the one hand, they're tighter, yet they're also looser. I cant explain it, and honestly, that's about the best one can say about the Dead when they're really "on", "well, I cant explain it man, you just have to experience it..." ;) I've been keeping up with the Tour, listening to the shows online as the Tour progressed and the first half was just okay for me. But in LA it felt like something happened that night and everything the boys had been striving for just all fell into place that night. The Forum felt like an old school East Coast indoor arena show, complete with rabid, hardcore heads that were so grateful to be back at the party again. This was not a "best of" tour. This was a "here's who we are now, dig it" tour, and man did I love what I heard on the West Coast leg of this Tour. That night in LA, I realized that Warren and Jeff no longer felt like they were filling in for anyone anymore. The *were* the Dead just as much as Bobby, Phil, Billy or Mickey are. To me, the Dead has always been a band in flux. There have been so many iterations of them I've sort of lost count. So to those who lament a Jerryless Dead, all I can say is, you don't know what you're missing. Sure I miss Jerry and I miss Brent. But the Dead as they are right now? Sound the best I've ever heard them and they're not stale, they're still out there pushing the envelope and really, isn't that what this is all about? So yeah, I no longer get weepy when I hear Brokedown Palace or Ripple or Box of Rain. I just revel in the fact that I get to experience this amazing thing we call The Dead, once again. And I am truly Grateful. One final comment...It felt so great to experience Shakedown once again and the lot scenes in LA and the Gorge were excellent. Like some upthread said, I found my self also saying things, and using expressions that I haven't used in a long time...It felt good to have the tribe back together again, didn't it?!

My sentiments exactly. It was a bittersweet night. Very cool to stay up until 3 am+ listening to the whole show, with great interviews and commentary thrown in during the set break. But it was so great to back out there catching 4 shows, eagerly anticipating seeing the setlists of the shows I didn't catch each morning, listening to the downloads etc. I'm going to miss all that. I'm firmly in the camp that thinks the music has changed/evolved in a great way....new sounds, tunes I never thought I'd get to hear live, Rhythm Devils taking it to new heights each night etc etc. Warren and Jeff are as good as it gets in the post Jerry/Brent/Keith/Pigpen era, which is to say they're both amazing musicians who fit right into the fabric of the band and helped to make the magic each night. Jeff is a monster on the keys and Warren managed to channel the ghosts of Jerry/Brent/Pigpen in his paying and singing while keeping it new and fresh and his own as well. Branford's interview during the set break was spot on: they're older, they've each gone on to do new things are are coming at playing together from a new angle, pushing the boundaries and not just treading the worn path. By the time they got to the Gorge, they seem to have all completely melded musically and got the bugs all worked out. We may not see them out on the road two thirds of the year anymore....at least as The Dead, but I gotta think the fun they seemed to be having along with the embrace of the fans will pull them back for another go around or two down the road. And yes, it was really cool to hear Mickey thank the crew and bring them out onstage for some well deserved applause. I've seen them with Jerry from the early 80's onward, seen Phil and his band, Ratdog, the Dead 2003/4 and I can say I had as good a time at these shows and I've had at any. All different, all excellent and all the music of the Grateful Dead which is what it's all about. Thanks guys!

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum to use but I'm sure Marye will let me know. I just went to the GDTS TOO website for the first time in years to see about Ratdog tix and was amazed at what i found. It prompted me to send them the following... Please don't take offense. Just a little constructive criticism. It's been many years since I've visited your site. Back in the day I thought it was the greatest thing ever. The days of calling the hotline every day sometimes multiple times were over, but come on guy's, your site is really quite primitive by today's standards. To my dismay, when I tried to fill out the credit card form I discovered it wasn't interactive. I consider myself a caveman for not having a printer/copier/scanner combo, but times are tough. I don't even know where to find a fax machine. Aren't we supposed to be a paperless society by now? This planet needs all the trees she can produce. The decorative envelopes are still very cool, and should be an option, but how about an online interactive version of the envelope? I'm sure there are thousands of heads out there into web design who would be willing to collaborate and put something together for you. I'm not a designer myself but I'm willing to help wherever I can. Just something to consider. Peace and much thanks for all you do. So this would be a shout out to all of you webmasters out there if they are receptive. I know youre out there, a simple Google search for anything Dead related shows me there's some mad skills out there. I have not recieved a response yet, but when I do I'll post it.

thor369 - I'm still waiting for my two Chicago show downloads that were ordered May 3rd! Hope your wife is better. she is doing much better. it was an asthma and panic attack type combo, scary stuff. my CD isnt a download, it was a CD i paid for, at the show, they was recording off the mixing boards, and pressing official show CD's on the spot for $25, with show date, and place, on official The Dead CDs. it is why i dont want the download to replace my CD, my puter dont have good speakers, and i only listen to my CDs in my car, or my headset CD player. i cant reburn 1 on my puter, and it isnt the official CD with the printed faces on them.

Chicago was incredible... 20 years since since my love's and mine last show but with one more in tow - our 11 year old son whose favorite song right now is Throwing Stones. All with a different yet better spirit. The magic was back. It does remind me of reading a book where you don't understand the words and you go back later and understand it even more after life experience. I started reading the book long ago and loved it - and It means even more now. The shows brought smiles, healing and joy. Peace Mike P.S. Please Tour again !!!! - You are beautiful together ! Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there

I was unable to get my order filled for the MSG show and I received my returned mail order yesterday (2/17/09). My suspicion is that the filled orders will get mailed shortly. While I believe my orders will be filled for the other shows I am hoping to attend, it would be nice to have my tickets and know for sure.

There is a link on GDTSTOO to sign up for information updates: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/GDTSTOO/Following is a portion of an update that I received on 2/13 and was also previously posted in this thread: We are processing the last of the Philadelphia orders this week & next as well as MSG. The first Shoreline is the next out of the door. The remaining shows will be processed in 3-6 weeks. Credit cards will also be processed this week & next. Please try to hold your phone calls and emails as we are busy bees filling ticket orders. I will admit that mail order is slow. However, back in what my step-kids / grandkids refer to as "The Day" we had the east coast and west coast hot lines - this was before the incredible age of the internet when some of us were still ( and still are ) listening to vinyl. The folks at GDTSTOO are good people that have always worked hard to take care of us and deserve credit for all they do. After all there are far more fans wanting tix than there are peeps in their office. Try and take a deep breath and ...... smile, smile. smile there will after all be music to fill the air! Peaceful Journey to You All...... Saint Stephen with a rose. In and out of the garden he goes. Country garland in the wind and the rain. Wherever he goes the people all complain.... Shine On! You want it, you got it, but you got to pay for it. It's good, but it's gottern very commercial. GDradio.com was pretty much all dead with the rest of the boy's music thrown in there with some interviews and stuff. There were a few commercial messages, but pretty low key. You could see what show was playing. I just checked it out after a long hiatus and see that deadnetcentral.com and icenine seemed to have laid down the law to those folks. Even on this site Lemieux got slammed for putting a whole show in pieces in the taper's section (5/5/78) and nobody is allowed to download (easily) taper's section anymore. Message to Bobby, Phil, Billy, Mickey & Hunter: How much money is enough? I understand how it is feeling that everybody trying to feed off a piece of you but lines that keep getting drawn in the sand wash into the sea, evetually... Have a good tour everybody!!! I'm outta here :-)(-:

I know it's hard to wait for mail order in the day of instant online ticket sales, and I know I'd be bummed to get my moneyorder back instead of a pair of tickets, but I was lucky enough to get two sweet seats in the mail yesterday and I hope the same goes for many of you! My buddy got our Spectrum tickets last week, so I presume that most people will be getting theirs in the next day or two (we're in PA and NJ). We're still waiting to hear on the other four MSG tickets for our group, so we're not exhaling just yet! It's gonna be a sweet run ;) As for the Dead radio, check out Jerryradio.com for a rotating selection of full shows. The Sirius/XM GD station is pretty siiiiick though... Good Times

May you have happy twirling at the MSG!! As for the Radio, why can't you just download a few FLAC files and be content? You can even make "personal" playlists too....it's amazing what you can do with even Itunes now! I remember sticking my cassettes (and I'm sure other heads would have said, pstttt 8 tracks) into the cassette player, only to hear kick arse music. I think letting someone else control your tunes is bs....not to mention it's not even the "whole" show/experience! Just putting my 1 and a 1/2 sense in! ____________________________________________________ Will you come with me? I have it and love it. Listen all the time, nothing wrong with a little suprise of whats going to play next, it is the grateful dead channel, kinda hard to go wrong there. They play some good concerts, some you cant get on the net. You get interviews on sat. morning, tales from the golden road with david gans on sunday, you get today in grateful dead history everyday with David Lemieux, you can call in and host your own setlist, theres guest dj's (Jackie Greene was a recent one) They did a day where they celebrated Dark Star and played various versions of the song from the deads entire career, They celebrated jerry's birthday, Now their doing a thing on welnick and hornsby. Nothing wrong with the dead channel at all if a person chooses to pay for it, i havent listened to the regular radio in years. Plus your not just getting the dead channel your gettting a variety of stuff.

Robbie and Cassidy: FLAC files (free lossless audio codecs) are available from many sights. Don't need to speak geek, key word here is free. Its just a good way to compress large audio files (entire shows) to make them easy to download. This is in keeping with the bands policy of taping and trading over the years. Its quite simple to do and if you are interested I can hook you up with everything you need, all free. I have nothing against Sirius per say as they are offering you other stations for your $12.00 a month or whatever it is. If they were only giving you live Dead and charging for it, I would be one of the first to get up in thier face. Keep the music free!

I think I have a pretty good idea what they have up their sleeves, but I hate to spoil a surprise, especially one with such good artwork. Clues and metaphors abound. If I'm right, we're likely to see That Old Debate arise again (seems like the last incarnation had just finally quieted down) and I was wondering if they were going to do anything with what was my first show. I wonder what else might be in the mix? Perhaps some tasty morsels from someplace Far Above Cayuga's Waters? Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

You don't have to buy camping ticket ahead of time. Buy camping supplies before you get too close. It is at least $40 and a hardly any facilities other than porta-pottys, but there are acres and acres of desert. Welcome to the other side of Washington. They haven't planted any trees, summer can be hot and windy with no shade but the venue is sweet. take a crack at that one too RobbienCassidy? Think it might be fun to try to logic that out. The word chance=something like luck and/or opportunity, if I understand it correctly. SOOO that could mean that the wider (fat) your range of opportunitly/luck is, is not as likely you will be lucky for one particular thing, when are more variables involved. And also goes for a smaller range (slim) chance-cuz would mean have less chances to be lucky as well. Am indeed in suspense what wise Marye would say, cuz may well be total crap what I just said. ********************************** It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

Gorge is hot in the Summer... May 16 should get very cool at night, bring sunscreen as no shade, but hey, we'll be at the amphitheater all afternoon, so bring sunscreen for the show!! Also recommend a polar fleece, sweater, or blanket, something for night. Even a rain pancho might be good to have. Even with all those bodies, all that dancin', and any mind altering stimuli, it might get chilly!!
