Oct 22 Bob Weir and The Marin Symphony
As the Grateful Dead song goes, Bob Weir has been playing in the band - one band or another - his entire adult life. But never a band quite like the one he'll be playing in for one night this fall. Appropriately enough, the singer-guitarist plans to open his unprecedented Oct. 22 performance with the Marin Symphony with a new orchestral arrangement of the Dead's classic "Playing in the Band." "It's something I've wanted to do since forever," Weir, who's 62, said from his home in Mill Valley. "I've wanted to do something like this since I was in my teens, or even younger." Billed as "First Fusion," it will be a history-making concert for the symphony, never having shared its stage with a rock musician before. And it's about time. Not 'It s something I've wanted to do since forever,' says musician Bob Weir, about playing with a symphony. (Provided by Susana Millman) to jump on the bandwagon, so to speak, but I've been after them to take on a collaboration like this for years. And now, in these lean economic times, they finally have. "The folks at the Marin Symphony are in pretty desperate financial shape," Weir said. "They need a big show, but they also need to bring in a new audience. That's a constant concern for symphonies. They want to get fresh ears in there because those people will come back. They do great stuff, but nobody knows about it." The plan is for the evening to be divided into two parts: In one, Weir and the 41-piece orchestra perform symphonic arrangements of Grateful Dead songs. Other than "Playing in the Band," Weir wants the other tunes getting this treatment to be a surprise. Advertisement "We wanted to be kind of ambitious," is all he would say. "We took some of the low-hanging fruit, and we went climbing as well." He's working closely on the arrangements with Italian composer-arranger Giancarlo Aquilanti, director of the Stanford Wind Ensemble. "We've been doing a lot of work at my home studio with synthesizers and scoring programs with sound libraries attached," Weir explained. "We talk down the arrangements and then mock them up. Along the way, I have to learn Italian because the spoken language of symphonic music is in Italian. Don't have to learn that much, but it's a fair bit." The other half of the program will showcase Weir and four or five rock musicians from his bands - Furthur and Ratdog - playing improvisational pieces with the Grammy-nominated chamber group Quartet San Francisco as well as symphony musicians picked for their ability to improvise. The Dead pioneered improvisation in rock, but it's not all that common in classical music. "Classical musicians often times do not improvise," Weir said. "They're technicians. But what I want to do is get some interaction happening. I want the soloists from the orchestra to be able to take off a little bit, if they can. And we're finding soloists who can improvise and do call and response and that kind of stuff. I've got a couple of instrumentalists I can trade licks with. We're hoping to salt that in there because I have not heard that done before." Rock musicians collaborating with symphony orchestras has been done before, so this isn't groundbreaking in that sense. Sting is touring with a five-piece rock group and the 45-member Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, which he calls "the biggest band I've ever had." What Rolling Stone calls his most exciting album in years, "Symphonicities," is a set of orchestral remakes of songs from his solo and Police repertoires. And let's not forget Metallica's deafening 1999 collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony, which I described at the time as "like playing a Stradivarius with a chain saw." "I've seen the Metallica-San Francisco Symphony video and learned things from it," Weir said. "I've learned that I don't think the band can play quite as loud as those guys were playing." Stylistically, rock songs and symphonic pieces aren't as incongruous as you might suspect. Weir and his late partner in the Dead, Jerry Garcia, began as folk/bluegrass musicians, and many of the Dead's songs, particularly the ones written with lyricist Robert Hunter, are essentially electrified contemporary folk music. "For hundreds of years, a great deal of classical music was flights of fancy that composers took on folk songs," Weir pointed out. "Bach was famous for that. So was Mozart." I would add Dvorak to that list, Copland, many others. The symphony offered this gig to Weir and his Dead-Furthur bandmate, bassist Phil Lesh, who wasn't up for a daunting project. Whether Lesh will play on the night of the show is up in the air. "I'm thinking of using two bass players, both of whom play for Ratdog," Weir said, mentioning stand-up bassist Rob Wasserman and electric bassist Robin Sylvester. "Lesh passed on the project early on, so what I'm trying to do is plump it up so that he can't refuse, but I've got some work to do." After a successful summer tour with Lesh and Furthur, Weir's focus is on "First Fusion," and what the collaboration will do to open doors for future projects like it. "If this goes well, I'm sure I'm going to have all kinds of offers from the Wolftraps and the pops orchestras back East," he predicted. "That will be fun, and that in turn could turn into more ambitious projects that would come back locally. But, for now, I'm pursuing it one step at a time." IF YOU GO What: "First Fusion," Bob Weir and the Marin Symphony When: 8 p.m. Oct. 22 Where: Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael Tickets: $50 to $350, on sale Sept. 1 Information: 499-6800; www.marinsymphony.org OO play on- KEEP LISTENING

Good comment. True that there will be a lot there that bought their way in, but I would hope the band in the coming months is able to do things to reduce the demand for these shows. Simulcast it, offer public forum simulcast locations in cities around the country. Maybe that brings ticket prices down a bit and folks who really aren't motivated to get to Chicago stop looking.. but on the other hand, maybe that also continues this massive hype that is going on and it only gets worse. really can't say what will happen at this point. I don't know of a bigger band that announced a 3-night run to close out their 50-year career on the 20th year anniversary of the last show they played in the same location. Think about that a moment. I'm sure they all kicked around ideas and this seemed like a great idea at the time, but its unprecedented and they have created the mother-of-all-concerts with a bottleneck for tickets like never seen before.

Throwing all options out into the universe that I can. This July would be my 25th anniversary of the first time I saw Jerry and had my heart set on seeing the band at least one night. Hoping someone can help a sister out. "Love Light"

unfortunately we all seem to be looking and not many are willing to give up except for the stub hubbers trying to make a killing on something that should have been a great last ride for all of us true heads, that being said i also have a room 2 miles away from the stadium and looking for two tickets willing to put people up, im sure this is a long shot at this point, but we did buy our tickets for the grateful ball after party which should be a great time, there are still tickets available for that event, and me and my bro will be making the most of our time in Chicago, and hope you all do to. peace and love,

Hey guys, first post here. I was extremely lucky and got a single 3 day pass (behind the stage, but still). None of my other buddies got tickets however so I'm looking to trade my Friday for Sunday (preferably) or Saturday. My seat is sec 253, row 20, seat 3. I'm not looking for a better view, anywhere inside is fine. For those looking for a room, we have an extra room at the Wyndham Grand Riverfront, about 2 miles away. Our traveling party got much smaller after Ticketmaster so we no longer need this room. I would like to use it to sweeten a trade, but if that's not necessary I can transfer it to whoever needs it. I selected UPS ground for shipping method, so my tickets should be in hand soon. I live in Alabama and my choice would be to meet somewhere in the south to trade in person before getting to Chicago.

Hey now! When I heard about the show I was very excited. I saved money and set up an account on Ticketmaster. I thought I would treat myself and buy one 3day ticket, and I would still have just enough to buy the round trip train ticket to Chicago. I figured if this was the one big thing I did for myself this year, it would be worth it. I walked across town in the snow to get to a wifi hotspot early on the onsale day. I had my phone and laptop going and still never got anywhere with the process. Like so many others on here, I got stuck in the loop of Ticketmaster throwing me out of the system, with a 45 minute queue message. By the time the system finally let me in, everything was sold out of course. At this point, I would be happy to make it to just one show. I dont care which date, I would just like to go to one more show. It would be like a family reunion! I have not experienced the kindness and amazing spiritual experience that dancing at a show brings in almost ten years (NYE with Phil Lesh and Friends in SF). I miss the familial experience of tour, and while I in no way expect it to be exactly the same as it was 25 and 30 years ago, I still really want to be a part of this one last show experience. I was able to save enough to pay face value for a ticket, but the dollars that stubhub is asking for is ridiculously high! I am also willing to throw in some artwork as a partial trade if it would make the deal sweeter? Maybe check out my art and send me a message? www(dot)abstractperspectives(dot)weebly(dot)com Thank you very much in advance! Charles Firecat Burnell

Tickets still available? I'm sure you've gotten 1000 responses already. My deal is that I haven't yet received a pinky or a congrats email, still holding out small (diminishing) hope that tickets will be forthcoming. I did have some friends who live in Montana that got tickets via MO. Haven't seen them in many moons and would love to see them again. If tickets still up, I'd buy them regardless of my MO outcome. Would like to see if I could get them early and then trade for other nights. Regardless, thanks for the kind offer. So little of that these days, still nice to see some left.

My partner and I have one ticket for the 4th. Looking for one more. We are driving out from California in one of our buses, he has a ’71 and I have a ’66. Not sure which one we’re taking (depends if we get mine running)but seems right to do the pilgrimage with a nice drive through Colorado, only one of us gets in though so we thought we’d ask for just one ticket … we can prove we are Deadheads. Email us at gmail to lytweaver if there is one… BTW there is a campground about an hour Northwest of Chicago that we found 20 min from Crystal Lake train station. I am sure there are more to be found at this end of the Metra Union Northwest Pacific line. This train runs from McHenry County down to Ogalvie Transit train station not far from Soldiers Field. Last train I believe is 12:30 a.m. We just aren't staying in the city and thought I'd mention this for anyone looking for options ... Thank you

So, what's it come to? I'm a long time Head, first show in '82, "on the bus" since '85. Never got shut out of New Year's shows, even. (Went to every one I tried to go to.) But this ticket sale was just crazy. . I have this one dear friend I haven't seen in years, we were going to meet in Chicago for these shows. But now that's not going to happen, unless.... Does anyone know of a "Workingman's Dead" or a "Sugar Magnolia (for 2)" travel package available, without scalping? I'm happy to pay 10% above face value, which seems reasonable "parking lot markup." But not more than that, or that would be scalping. . Peace.

I just spent the last unproductive hour looking for at least a discussion about the unverified rumor about another GD 50 show at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara. Does anyone know where on this site I can fuel my curiosity about this rumor? Any of you Deadheads looking for another Dead50 Fare thee Well run? It was the 1st thing talked about on the Golden Road yesterday. Please somebody tell me where to go for current discussions about the Dead. Gratefully Yours, Tony

My husband, known to many as Schnieders, passed away 3/16/15 at 1:30am after a long stay in the hospital sick. It was our dream to be at this show together and now I just want to be there with him in spirit. Our family has already provided airfare and hotel for the event, and with the way that the ticket situation is, I would be honored to even get in for one night out of three, any of them, if that's all I can do. I will be in Chicago all weekend even if I can't get in. Please let me know if you have a ticket for any of the three nights, if you have two tickets together I would bring my dad to the show with me who introduced me to the Grateful Dead, and will be in Chicago with me, and spent many hours jamming with my husband to the music of the Dead, if you only have one ticket, that is okay too. Please email teatime2006@gmail.com if you can assist in any way and let me know what you need for the tickets, as I cannot afford the insanity on stubhub. Thank you for all your love over the years and the best family we have known. Lizzy (Whisper)

I was able to score a sweet camp spot at Indiana Dunes State Park for the shows, that was the easy part! Scoring actual tix for the shows, well, not so easy... I'm looking to hook up with some kind folk who've got an extra tix (or three!), and need a crash spot for the weekend that's not gonna crash the wallet. Here's the clincher: Indiana Dunes has a metro stop at the park. The train gets you to/from Soldier with no driving / cars / parking / headaches! Driving that train, indeed!! If someone comes thru with tix, I'll pay, of course. Not looking for a miracle here. I'll also be covering the cost of the camp spot, so your lodging would be gratis. Interested, hit me up at soswald123@yahoo.com StSteveO
