"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

    30 Trips mixing and mastering
i was informed by PM from someone who got info directly from an email from the powers that be that the mixing and mastering was done at 24/192. So that would be one modification to my description below. I don't think that would have much impact on the time involved. The rest of the description would still hold. Everything analog would have been digitized to 24/192. Everything digital would have been uponverted to 24/192, mixing and mastering processes performed on the files. Then for the CD's, a set of files would be converted to 16/44.1 with noise shaped dithering and hdcd encoded, and another set of files would be downconverted to 24/96. I think the likeliest reason for the delay (i have no idea but it would be nice to actually find out) might be that it was contracted for overseas manufacture, what they got was incorrect somehow (poor quality, missing files, mislabeled files, who knows) and that the lenghth of time to have them redone and shipped stateside again was high. That's my guess. I wonder if we will ever really know. I very much hope you guys get your music before the Christmas holidays :):)

but the one i really dig is....87 ! though it`s not the " epic " with " the usual suspects " - no DS , no Other one , no Scarlet - but the vibe , the feeling , the singing , the playing , you can almost see the audience dance and cheer....so that 87 is truly epic !

I believe wjonjd is correct, I left out the FLAC conversion. The exercise in math, however, did take my mind off this incredibly bad situation....

Feel like I won the lottery....Talk about an embarrassment of riches....just scored 2 bottles of 12 year old Pappy Van Winkle Special Reserve "Lot B" & 1 bottle of 10 year old, Old Rip Van Winkle. Pairs very well with 30 Trips.... This Thanksgiving I give thanks to being a very lucky man....in more ways than one. :) Happy Thanksgiving everybody. P.S.-I work for a small liquor store so I actually got it for what it is supposed to sell for,not the bullsheet prices most see it for.Now that I think about it,it resembles secondary market prices like DEAD stuff.Crazy P.S.S.-It's also officially ski season here.Whaaahoo!

I get this isn't an Altamont type debacle, but for those who dropped the bucks for a product that apparently hasn't been made yet, this isn't feeling like a Woodstock-type love-in either. I was thinking of buying a bolt. I'm a non-CD guy who loves streaming GD music. Kinda the ideal customer for this, but I'm thinking no way now. Am glad refunds are being given to those tired of waiting. On the upside, this did free up some cash to purchase an unopened'73 Winterland Box Set from Amazon at original pricing. So I got that going for me. Let me know when you're ready to download 30 Trips or somehow get this figured out down the road. For now, the 4 CD set is sounding fine to me. Till we meet again 30 Trips. No bolt for me for now. Always loved Rhino, so I'm surprised. Used to shop for years at the (now closed) Westwood Boulevard Rhino shop. Always a little sad when driving by still. Oh well.

Mmmm....mmmm.... ....all sound spectacular except Manor Downs '82 and Zenith '90. Texas has too much high end, and France sounds a little muddy. Other than that. Impeccable....I maybe would have added a small light on the underside of the lid that came one when the box is opened. That would be cool.... And to those who ordered the bolt. I would hang tight, and wait. Easy for me to say, that that little piece of tech may be a hot commodity in the future.

RE: Here's the problem with the USB order
I saw the posts by batzye and sfrank115 and wanted to respond as well as I could. I did some actual conversions on GD files ripped from CD and then did some math to determine approximately what the size of the files would be that were coming on the USB. I'll explain how I came up with my numbers, but first wanted to point out that although batzye's numbers are approximately accurate, he is assuming that the 24/96 files they will put on the USBs are WAV's. I think that is highly unlikely. I believe they will use FLAC's as they are musically identical and because that is the format that dead.net/rhino have always used to provide hi-res files in the past as downloads. His numbers are also slightly high because I believe that there is between 73 and 74 hours of music, not the 77 he used. I could be mistaken about that, but it wouldn't matter as I didn't use time to do the calculations, just the number of bytes. I took one disc of live GD music in 24/96 WAV format and called it "A-W24" which was 2.53GB. This converted as FLAC (using highest compression level) was 1.46GB "A-F24", and as 320kbs mp3 was 184MB "A-MP3". I used these ratios in combination with the actual size of 30Trips (including the 45rpm tracks) to determine what the sizes would be for 30Trips. I used the actual number of bytes rather than the rounded Gigabyte figures to get as accurate a number as possible. 30Trips-W24 = 141.9GB (24-bit WAV) 30Trips-F24 = 81.9GB (24-bit FLAC) 30Trips-MP3 = 10.1GB (320kbs MP3) So, if they used the FLACS and MP3s it would be approximately 92GB. Even if I'm off by quite a bit due to variations - like let's say I happened to pick a disc of music that happens to FLAC compress much more than most for some reason, it would still easily fit on a 128GB USB stick. As far as the mastering processes that sfrank115 refers, I don't have any inside knowledge, but I do know that almost all digital mastering is done in either 24-bit fixed, or 32-bit floating specs, and at either 96khz or 192khz. Since the files are being provided in 24/96, my guess is that these are the specs they used during the mastering process. All of the shows that came from analog tape would have been digitized to 24/96 for mixing (if multitrack) and mastering. Shows that were recorded to digital in anything below 24/96 would likely have been upconverted to 24/96 so that the hundreds or even thousands of digital manipulations that can take place during mastering don't add noticeable quantization noise, which happens much more readily at 16-bits than 24-bits. The initial upconversion is a simple and quick process, and wouldn't add any noticeable timeframe to USB stick delivery. I don't believe that the music for Boxzilla was mastered at 16-bits - that would be highly unusual because even though the quantization noise level of digital music at 16-bits is still basically inaudible, the quantization noise added each time you do one of the hundreds or thousands of digital manipulations typical during mastering of the files can create noise that IS audible. This is one of several reasons why 24-bits is critical for mastering, even though I and many believe that when you convert the final product down to 16-bits, the final 24-bit files and the 16-bit files will sound the same to human ears. In any case, I believe that all the mastering and mixing was already done in order to complete the production of Boxzilla. I do not believe any further mastering of any kind would be required as they would already have the exact 24/96 files that they will be providing on the USB sticks. Therefore, I do not believe that any mastering or mixing issues, or anything having to do with any further work on the files beyond what they already did for the physical box, would have any bearing on the reasons for the delay in the USB stick. In fact, I think that AFTER they finished creating the exact files that will be used for USB stick, they needed to do a little extra work to create the CD files for Boxzilla including converting the files to 16/44.1. Disclaimer - I could be wrong about anything and everything above. I don't think so, though. :) Edit: I just noticed that they do actually state above that the files that will be provided on the USB stick will be in FLAC format, not WAV, at 24/96, so the 128GB size of the USB sticks is not a problem. Edit2: Once the USB sticks arrive, could someone post the actual total size of the combined FLAC files and combined MP3 files please?

I did it... yes, reluctantly, I did it. My wife would absolutely kill me if she knew, but I have until Sept 18 to worry about that... As a release...I guess I had to do it so I___ (I'm drawing a blank here) I guess I would have felt bad if I missed the bus and heard how great a ride it was... so now I'm on a parked bus waiting until Sept to start moving! I hope it's worth it...you guys really didn't have to price it so high... you could have at least carved it up into 4 parts (FWIW).

It's a bit overwhelming with the volume of shows and the price, but I'm in. The only concern I have is the packaging. Please just tell me that the individual show packaging in the box are nothing like the May 1977 box. I hated those oversized CD holders where the CD's slide around so much. I'm ok with either the Spring 1990 style or the Europe 72 style packaging. So will the 1977 show in this set be the Cornell show?

Looking at the Definitive Story track listing, it tells us what all the shows are going to be. I can't see forking over that much money for mostly shows I already have in good quality. Beyond that, I have never understood the box set deal. This is 2015. I just want the music and the flexibility to get the portions I want in download fashion. I need LESS stuff in my house. Whatever physical stuff I need, it's for my kids.

Placed order and it hung on the screen "order being processed please wait". Charge hits my card but no confirmation or order number. Call customer service, about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. "Sorry, we can't do anything. Wait until tomorrow and call back." Wait, but I NEED to make sure my order for the 700 dollar limited edition item went through. "Too bad." Can you file a complaint for me about how poorly the website is being run? "Nope, I am just customer service wouldn't even know what to do." So as of right now I am just in the wind. Tried again a few more times same result. Have no idea if I have an order, but I do have 2250.00 worth of preauths on my credit card.

Surprised they're both the same price-wouldn't the USB drive be a little cheaper without all the jacket materials, etc? The Europe box has proven to be the best deal they offered, 73 discs for $450 with shipping, (and before days of internet sales taxes) of one of the greatest tours by any band, anywhere, in the history of Earth. This still looks tempting, though (natch).

Shame there's nothing from '65 except a 45 that won't get played. Odd choice for 1995, I was really hoping for 5/21 in Vegas. Surely a show with Unbroken Chain should have been selected, 4/02 perhaps? Salt Lake City is a fun show though, just odd. I am really shocked they'd put out a show with Samba In The Rain!

I guess I should've sent the office the cool photos I have from this show a long time ago. It was a great day, though very foggy and cold in the Park. Hopefully someday the complete soundboard of Winterland 6/17/75 will be released as a Dave's Picks. Best version of "Peggy-O" ever, and the amazing show opener, the debut of "Crazy Fingers" (and Bill Graham's wonderful introduction).

Assuming that 11/28/80 Lakeland, FL is the pick, the question needed to be asked. Hopefully Gainesville 11/29/80 will be a future Dave's Pick. Interesting choices, some great ones, some slight head scratchers (I'm looking at you, '88 and '90). Many that I've heard before, but some that were under the radar (and possibly one from the Mountain Girl tape stash?).

While I thought the release this year was going to center around the possible return of the Betty Board shows this is just a monster release.Cheers to all those who had called a show from each year as what was going to make up the box set. Wife is going to kill me but I couldn't resist ordering this. I have every other official release and bonus disc so missing this gem would leave a massive hole in my personal vault of official releases. It is a bummer that they aren't going to release individual shows like Europe '72. Hopefully because of its size it will take awhile to sell out and allow people to save up a little or mentally and financially justify a purchase of this size. With all that being said, WOW, what a helluva a way to track the Grateful Dead's career and honor their 50th Anniversary!

How much more can we fans take? first, 1000's of $ for a ticket, now 700 bucks for a few shows worth having, all I can say is, if you can afford this, more power to you. Most of these tracks (if not the entire show) are available already, just not as official releases. So although there may be some gems in here, you can find great-quality, free downloads of this stuff at archive.org. Well, you *could*, anyway. Doubtless those freebies will be streaming only, now. But for those of us who already snagged them off archive.org, this set isn't as amazing as it could have been. Since this is (possibly) the last big, grand release, other than the occasional Dave's Picks, I have to assume that there isn't much in the Vault that hasn't seen the light of day by other means already - or there is some, but it's of terrible quality. There are a lot of shows from 1966 and 1967 that are unfindable at the moment. If they existed anywhere, they'd probably be in the Vault. But there are some more recent ones that aren't available for download, and I'm not sure why - 2/20/95 SLC, 6/14/94 Seattle, 3/17/94 Rosemont, 6/1/91 LA Coliseum, 5/6/89 Frost, 3/14/82 Davis, 2/6/79 Tulsa. These are all streaming on Archive. I don't think they've been released, but maybe I'm wrong. There is no real good reason to release these in one huge pile. It feels shortsighted to me, but I'm a consumer, not a businessman.

I placed my order 3 hours ago and it was really slow, thought it would never go through and finally got my confirmation after maybe 7-10 minutes of just spinning doing nothing.

any charge will most likely be an Authorization Hold. In some systems, pressing order more than once may cause another hold to show up. Hopefully that is not the case if anyone was using a debit card. Any charge should fall off in a few busines days. The website was tweaking out for a while, I wasnt able to place an order either. If an order is successful, it should access funds for a few days and then a charge will disappear. However, the funds were not taken. An actual charge should reappear when it is shipped. The big box has a few shows Dave mentioned in his Top 10 Essential shows everybody wished they were. 11.10.67, 2.22.69, and 10.12.84. I knew there was gonna be a catch to the DREAM BOWL. One of the ultimate skull splitters in GDHistory. Getting your hands on 2.22.69 will co$t ya $750 big ones.

There are so many huge top shelf shows in this set. $700 bucks is just....yikes. Considering how much some people are asking for their Winterland '77 and Fillmore West '69 boxes, this is a steal. For once, I honestly cannot complain about a lack of variety here. I was at that 3/20/92.

First, the clunkiness of this site. Try listening to the audio clips, and posting a comment at the same time... can't do it.The numbering of the comments is odd and confusing. Post a comment, and then you are back to the top of the page and have to scroll down to continue reading. Awkward. Website seems to not be able to handle all the traffic. What are you thinking? You offer a paltry 6,500 copies of this box, and you expect it to sell slowly? There are potentially MILLIONS of customers for something like this. If even 1% of the fans can afford the $700+ this costs, that's still many, many more than a mere 6,500. And 1,000 USB's? Seriously? Why not charge $4-500 for the digital only version and offer the same number as the physical set? I would really be curious to be at the meetings where these details are discussed. Some of these decisions don't really seem to make much sense. I'm sure the box, with the large book and extras will be beautiful. I have the Europe '72 trunk, and it's fantastic. But "30 Trips" is just too much money for me (and it appears that even trying to buy it today might be impossible). And Dave, I love ya, but get a friggin' windscreen for your video camera. The distorted stereo wind noise is incredibly annoying. You're talking to dedicated TAPERS out here... sound quality, even for little messages like the seaside chats, is important.

when i listen to the 87 Dew included in the RS article ... wow. the guitar is just searing, psychedelic, and jerry's age-worn voice lends the perfect mood to the tune. i get the cry for more 80s.

...is it a fact that the credit card isn't actually charged until this ships? Just the authorization now, but the actual charge later? Anyone know? Thanks.

My order has been processing for over an hour. Got through to a helpful guy at customer service who informed me that the ordering system crashed. He took my e-dress, and said that they would e-mail me as soon as the problem was resolved. Many wanted lots of 80s and 90s. Many wanted the shows that were mentioned at the onset of the Dave's series. Many knew that this would be a MAJOR!! box. Many had many months to save. Many are complaining anyway? This box is fantastic!
