We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Way Back

Going back a few topics because I just woke up.. I also listened to the '79 from boxzilla last night at work.. that's the "'79 Trip" i was referring to when addressing keithfan's playlist. Reading it again, I realize it might have been interpreted as the '79 Road Trip.. which I've never heard. I did, however, forget to put the third disc of the '79 show on my phone, so I only got to hear 2/3 of that show last night... D'oh!

Woe is USme

Waiting for the stick, I feel your pain with lack of communication. On the other hand, when I check my order on the site, it still says backordered expected ship date 10/31/15. So maybe they think that is sufficient in the communication department, only they undermined themselves by getting a lot of boxes out to people earlier than what I understand the check order info had on the site for the boxes. Halloween is only 8 days away now. But if Dave's 16 arrives before the stick, I would consider that a rather large fail on the part of friends here. PATIENCE, n. Liner notes off on a couple Boxzilla...'66, '68, '75.

A couple small nits from the 1st third of the big box, a couple small errors in the lists/notes. For, 1966 they claim Minglewood as a GD song when it is most definitely a cover, be it Noah Lewis or Cannon's Jug Stompers/Traditional. For 1969, they list Disc 2 as track 2. St. Stephen > 3. The Eleven Jam. It's clearly the full Eleven. The lyrics actually start on track 2, then there is a jam at the start of track 3, and then more Eleven lyrics in that track, before going into Lovelight. For 1975, no attribution to Matt Kelly on harmonica on Music Never Stopped and BIODTL and he can clearly be heard. Just some small stuff, but errors for certain. No detraction from the enjoyment to be sure, but claiming a cover as yours and not crediting another musician who played on the tracks are certainly mistakes of a sort.

FWIW, I also got charged the full amount well before the Box shipped. I got the delay email, then in September got charged anyway, with no real notification of when it would ship. A couple days before it arrived I did get a 'your order has shipped' email from GD site. Don't know if this matches other people who got the box or not, but just wanted to let you know this charged/no idea when shipping thing happened to people who got the box as well. It was probably 3 weeks or so from the charge to the arrival.

my 2 cents

I ordered the USB. No word yet. When I got the ‘delay’ email in September, I figured, well OK I waited this long, what’s the difference. But I got charged the $700 and now have no surety when it will get shipped. Getting charged with no transparency as to why/when is what bugs me. The people on the phone are nice, but by what they say they think the streaming link should keep me satisfied. I’m not set up for streaming on my main system. That may sound odd for someone who ordered the USB, but that’s the way it is. So a bit of a downer for something that I was on the fence about ordering anyway…. On a better note, the best Donna harmonizing I know is UJB 5-19-77. Done really well.

72 cha cha cha changes....

72 is a very diverse year with many different sounding incarnations. The fall of 72 is perhaps the absolute apex of this great band. They are firing on all cylinders and just killing it night after night. Some of my all time favorite shows are from the fall of 72. Dick's picks 11,23 and 36 are insanely good. Dave's 11 is otherworldly, The Hofheinz PITB, I could go on and on. It's my favorite tour. Contrast that with the insanely dialed in band that took Europe by storm and put down one of the best runs any group has ever had or ever will have. Totally different sounding band with PIG still layin it down and providing organ and harmonica. ANY show from the fall of 72 has my immediate attention! HA. I didn't get the box but I would love to hear the 72 show from it one day.

....i do get your point. Having seen - well estimated - 300 plus shows since 1982 ( everything from Crosby, Stills, Nash to Pink Floyd , Deep Purple, Neil Young , Warren Haynes , even Moe ) i still travel up to 400 miles to see a gig i like to see. My lady does come with me whenever she wants to but not so does my son - i had tix for Santana open air this summer , he had nothing better to do but he just said" i don`t feel like ". You are right , Derek Trucks is a magician of his own , catched the TTB live some two years ago in Munich , they smoked and had lots of good vibes......and still i hope for Phil or/and Bobby to cross the ocean once again. Btw, todays listening was 92 - beautiful DS - very fine piano , very athmospheric , have to relisten agin....

No UPS choice date and no dead net ship (still says backordered). Ordered within three hours of announcement on 2 Jun (3+17 to be exact) so it can't be shipped in order of order dates. Just send an update that it will ship in a week, two weeks , a month or even next year. Communicate please

Kind of wondering

Who Are We? Went to see Tedeschi Trucks Band Wednesday Night. IMO, they may be the best touring music unit on the planet now. Go see them. Wore my 1987 Ventura County T-shirt to the show. Show was made up of some old timers (casual - I mean folks into their 80's), old timers (sportsters with their blazers, the folks who worshipped money too much when they were young and now realize they missed a lot of action), old and young hippies and freaks. As I am walking in I spot 1 guy and 2 girls all dreaded out. The guy was probably 19 and the girls maybe 16 and 18. We smile and waive as I am walking in. The guy is giving the traditional dead finger wave. So I go back and talk for a minute. They are looking for that miracle and selling some home made jewelry. So I am feeling groovy and kind, so I go to the ticket booth. Find out 3 tickets for the balcony were $36 (total not apiece). So I go back to them and tell them if interested I will buy them 3 balcony tickets. They turned me down. Said that have an after party to go to. Huh? They were not interested. Just do not understand. You look the part, asking for the miracle; but then you reject the offer. Now to be fair, they never heard the ticket price. They also stated they did not want 1 person to have to buy all 3 tickets. As I walked away I said 3 times - the tickets are cheap, cheap. Oh well. Missed a blazing show. TTB had Cedell Davis and Brethren open. Mr. Davis is one of the last of the old timer blues guys born in 1927. The Brethren came out and played a couple of down and dirty blues songs, very intense. Then they wheel Mr. Davis out in a wheel chair with full suit and tie on. He was incredible. It was so fun to see an old blues guy get his turn. The crowd was very appreciative. Gave him multiple standing ovations. You could see it was moving to him. Thank you Susan and Derek for bringing him along. He even went to his merch table and signed autographs and shook hands. Shook his hand and said thanks so much! I love how music has retrenched. Love that TTB was in a 2,000 seat concert hall. It was awesome that the Brethren were in the halls having a beer talking to folks in between sets. So much better than a stadium or even an arena. I would say the average age of the crowd was close to 60, wow. Went and saw Yes in this same hall 2 years ago and the average age was closer to 70. Truly the wheelchair and crutches crowd. Hope I can still make it when I am that old. Awesome Awesome night. European and Australian heads TTB is heading your way. Go see them. Support Live Music! Fortunately Susan and Derek are well grounded. They know how to party and keep it all in check. Being around Derek's Uncle and Greg Allman, they have warned of the pitfalls of the lifestyle. So since they appear well grounded, they should have a long time making music for us. Susan was phenomenal, Derek was of course Derek. I now understand why he left the Allman Brothers to focus on his band. Salute Derek Salute! Oh yeah, got to spend time talking to Derek's dad (Butch Trucks brother). Passed a message on to please tell Butch and Greg to not retire ABB until their 50th in 4 years. He said he would pass it on. Very nice guy. I snuck into the hall around 2 pm. I spoke with him the first time then as he was just finishing lunch and was setting up TBB merch table. Great family vibe. Wierd, the sound engineers were doing sound check, but the band was not there. Sound check using live tapes of the band to measure the hall's accoustic response. Very interesting to see that. Got to speak with the FOH engineer for a few minutes after the show. Should have taped, what was I thinking. Oh yeah, had a young head ask me about the shows in Ventura. He had gone to Santa Clara. I feel a little queezy after that last <Click>

I did it... yes, reluctantly, I did it. My wife would absolutely kill me if she knew, but I have until Sept 18 to worry about that... As a release...I guess I had to do it so I___ (I'm drawing a blank here) I guess I would have felt bad if I missed the bus and heard how great a ride it was... so now I'm on a parked bus waiting until Sept to start moving! I hope it's worth it...you guys really didn't have to price it so high... you could have at least carved it up into 4 parts (FWIW).

Packaging

It's a bit overwhelming with the volume of shows and the price, but I'm in. The only concern I have is the packaging. Please just tell me that the individual show packaging in the box are nothing like the May 1977 box. I hated those oversized CD holders where the CD's slide around so much. I'm ok with either the Spring 1990 style or the Europe 72 style packaging. So will the 1977 show in this set be the Cornell show?

So many folks posting on here about how to hide this purchase from the wife / spouse. I say we come up with a collective game plan - something like "wow, this was so cool that they sold such a great set for only $100!" If we all agree to it, we can make it happen. Who's in? :-)

Looking at the Definitive Story track listing, it tells us what all the shows are going to be. I can't see forking over that much money for mostly shows I already have in good quality. Beyond that, I have never understood the box set deal. This is 2015. I just want the music and the flexibility to get the portions I want in download fashion. I need LESS stuff in my house. Whatever physical stuff I need, it's for my kids.

Tried to place an order and have been in Processing mode for 1 1/2 hours. Dead.Net was clueless - as they said their systems were down as well.I have a temp charge on my credit card but no confirmation as to whether I have a box or not. What a mess. Now what?

This is such a splurge, but I'm in. The credit card isn't charged until Sept. 18th, so you basically have to save $200/mo. for the next 3.5 months. I couldn't stand to pass on this baby.

Great job on the website

Placed order and it hung on the screen "order being processed please wait". Charge hits my card but no confirmation or order number. Call customer service, about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. "Sorry, we can't do anything. Wait until tomorrow and call back." Wait, but I NEED to make sure my order for the 700 dollar limited edition item went through. "Too bad." Can you file a complaint for me about how poorly the website is being run? "Nope, I am just customer service wouldn't even know what to do." So as of right now I am just in the wind. Tried again a few more times same result. Have no idea if I have an order, but I do have 2250.00 worth of preauths on my credit card.

same price?

Surprised they're both the same price-wouldn't the USB drive be a little cheaper without all the jacket materials, etc? The Europe box has proven to be the best deal they offered, 73 discs for $450 with shipping, (and before days of internet sales taxes) of one of the greatest tours by any band, anywhere, in the history of Earth. This still looks tempting, though (natch).

The site is running slow, order processing taking along time, 2600 some odd guests online - I think this one is going to sell out fast like the Europe box.

30 Trips downloads

Just hoping these will be made available as 24/96 downloads. i'd love to get the box or even the USB, but just cannot justify it at present. After all, the first thing I would do is upload it to my laptop and iPad.My Europe '72 trunk, and TOO have been sitting there, since uploading them. Maybe if they're still available in a month ...... who knows. I just pre-ordered the smaller set on iTunes.

I thought it'd be a 30 years/30 shows box

Shame there's nothing from '65 except a 45 that won't get played. Odd choice for 1995, I was really hoping for 5/21 in Vegas. Surely a show with Unbroken Chain should have been selected, 4/02 perhaps? Salt Lake City is a fun show though, just odd. I am really shocked they'd put out a show with Samba In The Rain!

Too much for me

Not going to pay that much for the relatively few shows in this box that I'm actually interested in. I'm most saddened that Lindley Meadows is now off the table for a stand-alone release. Oh well.

iTunes kind of spoiled the slow reveal surprise; the suspense would have been fun. The RS article confirms the 2-22-69 and 10-12-84 shows. The 84 one is a highlight for me. 3-20-92 has me excited too!

The USB chip is only limited to 1,000 - but I don't think the actual downloads will be limited. The Spring Box #1 can still be downloaded from the dead.net. Plus, you can also download some of the individual Europe 72 shows which is currently out of print.

Ordering process - brokedown palace not built to last

c'mon man...I tried ordering online, got the "your order being processed...." hanging for over thirty minutes...on hold, listening to Beethoven for another 30 minutes... I am willing to spend the 800 bucks for the 30 trips, but never had so much trouble giving away my money before.... ohhh wait, it gets better....got through on the phone, after waiting for 45 minutes...and the dude said they cannot do anything, their system is down, and he can't order it for me, or reserve it, nothing....great, why even bother listing a phone number? the dude said to let the "your order being processed...." spin for a couple hours, that is the only chance I have... Someone needs to plan this better...got blown out on Chicago, now this....

I guess I should've sent the office the cool photos I have from this show a long time ago. It was a great day, though very foggy and cold in the Park. Hopefully someday the complete soundboard of Winterland 6/17/75 will be released as a Dave's Picks. Best version of "Peggy-O" ever, and the amazing show opener, the debut of "Crazy Fingers" (and Bill Graham's wonderful introduction).

What about Gainesville?????

Assuming that 11/28/80 Lakeland, FL is the pick, the question needed to be asked. Hopefully Gainesville 11/29/80 will be a future Dave's Pick. Interesting choices, some great ones, some slight head scratchers (I'm looking at you, '88 and '90). Many that I've heard before, but some that were under the radar (and possibly one from the Mountain Girl tape stash?).

While I thought the release this year was going to center around the possible return of the Betty Board shows this is just a monster release.Cheers to all those who had called a show from each year as what was going to make up the box set. Wife is going to kill me but I couldn't resist ordering this. I have every other official release and bonus disc so missing this gem would leave a massive hole in my personal vault of official releases. It is a bummer that they aren't going to release individual shows like Europe '72. Hopefully because of its size it will take awhile to sell out and allow people to save up a little or mentally and financially justify a purchase of this size. With all that being said, WOW, what a helluva a way to track the Grateful Dead's career and honor their 50th Anniversary!

way to much to fast. too bad the Miami 10-26-89 show is in this box, also the 1980 Lakeland Fl show, I was at both, now I will never get to hear them in high quality. How much more can we fans take? first, 1000's of $ for a ticket, now 700 bucks for a few shows worth having, all I can say is, if you can afford this, more power to you. Another big disappointment to all us working fans.

Most of these tracks (if not the entire show) are available already, just not as official releases. So although there may be some gems in here, you can find great-quality, free downloads of this stuff at archive.org. Well, you *could*, anyway. Doubtless those freebies will be streaming only, now. But for those of us who already snagged them off archive.org, this set isn't as amazing as it could have been. Since this is (possibly) the last big, grand release, other than the occasional Dave's Picks, I have to assume that there isn't much in the Vault that hasn't seen the light of day by other means already - or there is some, but it's of terrible quality. There are a lot of shows from 1966 and 1967 that are unfindable at the moment. If they existed anywhere, they'd probably be in the Vault. But there are some more recent ones that aren't available for download, and I'm not sure why - 2/20/95 SLC, 6/14/94 Seattle, 3/17/94 Rosemont, 6/1/91 LA Coliseum, 5/6/89 Frost, 3/14/82 Davis, 2/6/79 Tulsa. These are all streaming on Archive. I don't think they've been released, but maybe I'm wrong. There is no real good reason to release these in one huge pile. It feels shortsighted to me, but I'm a consumer, not a businessman.

I placed my order 3 hours ago and it was really slow, thought it would never go through and finally got my confirmation after maybe 7-10 minutes of just spinning doing nothing.

any charge will most likely be an Authorization Hold. In some systems, pressing order more than once may cause another hold to show up. Hopefully that is not the case if anyone was using a debit card. Any charge should fall off in a few busines days. The website was tweaking out for a while, I wasnt able to place an order either. If an order is successful, it should access funds for a few days and then a charge will disappear. However, the funds were not taken. An actual charge should reappear when it is shipped. The big box has a few shows Dave mentioned in his Top 10 Essential shows everybody wished they were. 11.10.67, 2.22.69, and 10.12.84. I knew there was gonna be a catch to the DREAM BOWL. One of the ultimate skull splitters in GDHistory. Getting your hands on 2.22.69 will co$t ya $750 big ones.

There are so many huge top shelf shows in this set. $700 bucks is just....yikes. Considering how much some people are asking for their Winterland '77 and Fillmore West '69 boxes, this is a steal. For once, I honestly cannot complain about a lack of variety here. I was at that 3/20/92.

First, the clunkiness of this site. Try listening to the audio clips, and posting a comment at the same time... can't do it.The numbering of the comments is odd and confusing. Post a comment, and then you are back to the top of the page and have to scroll down to continue reading. Awkward. Website seems to not be able to handle all the traffic. What are you thinking? You offer a paltry 6,500 copies of this box, and you expect it to sell slowly? There are potentially MILLIONS of customers for something like this. If even 1% of the fans can afford the $700+ this costs, that's still many, many more than a mere 6,500. And 1,000 USB's? Seriously? Why not charge $4-500 for the digital only version and offer the same number as the physical set? I would really be curious to be at the meetings where these details are discussed. Some of these decisions don't really seem to make much sense. I'm sure the box, with the large book and extras will be beautiful. I have the Europe '72 trunk, and it's fantastic. But "30 Trips" is just too much money for me (and it appears that even trying to buy it today might be impossible). And Dave, I love ya, but get a friggin' windscreen for your video camera. The distorted stereo wind noise is incredibly annoying. You're talking to dedicated TAPERS out here... sound quality, even for little messages like the seaside chats, is important.

when i listen to the 87 Dew included in the RS article ... wow. the guitar is just searing, psychedelic, and jerry's age-worn voice lends the perfect mood to the tune. i get the cry for more 80s.

My order has been processing for over an hour. Got through to a helpful guy at customer service who informed me that the ordering system crashed. He took my e-dress, and said that they would e-mail me as soon as the problem was resolved. Many wanted lots of 80s and 90s. Many wanted the shows that were mentioned at the onset of the Dave's series. Many knew that this would be a MAJOR!! box. Many had many months to save. Many are complaining anyway? This box is fantastic!
