"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Not to beat a dead horse, but thought this one might be topical but forgot it earlier. Larry always sang on Deep Elem Blues with Levon, and has continued to play it. I've always loved that one, and I know Jerry (& the Dead) played it (and on the new On Broadway release!) so thought someone may be interested. Levon Helm Band (Larry Campbell lead vocals) 2008: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8EpImOCFic Blackberry Smoke 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q-2OijZpzE This was the first recording of the song's DNA..1927 by the Georgia Crackers as the Georgia Black Bottom (recorded in Atlanta..surprise!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyX7uEsScg4 Probably the most famous though, and influential to the folks we know, were the versions by the Shelton Brothers. This one is on Decca so likely ~1935: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQr5GMSsUgU I also have a cool version of Dylan doing it back in his coffeehouse days, from Gerdes Folk City in April '62. Youtube is being obstinate, but when I figure it out I'll post it if anyone's still interested.

Sammy - Musical mind of happiness, that is a fantastic turn of phrase and an accurate description! As far as recommended records for Larry & Teresa, unfortunately he's such an artist (and / or I'm just not privy to his other work) where there's not a lot necessarily released that sums him up. The two Levon albums we mentioned already are by far my favorite as far as official releases that feature him, as well as Dylan's Love & Theft from 2001. Fantastic frickin' album, including my favorite modern Dylan song..which generally I mean 2000+ but in this case I'd say my favorite since 1976 at least. Anyways, Larry plays some great stuff on Love & Theft..but probably his best representation with Dylan, to me, is either live from the late 90s / 2000, or the Masked & Anonymous soundtrack from 2003. I love that whole album and not to mention the movie. Actually, there's a Dead version if It's All Over Now, Baby Blue on the soundtrack..as well as a Jerry (maybe JGB?) version of Senor (Tales Of Yankee Power). I need to go back and see when / where those versions are from! Doesn't look like there's alot of M&A on Youtube, but here's Cold Irons Bound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hO-83CIVKM Larry played several stringed instruments during his time with Dylan..(my favorite was the bouzouki), but he also sang with him which was fun, not to mention a change. Typically, I believe, it was Larry & Charlie Sexton (who is back in Dylan's band now, since 2009, having left for a long spell) adding in on chorus, etc. Here's a version from Blowin' In The Wind, my guess would be 2000 without looking any deeper at the current moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EwuaNOdfHg Also at that time, '99-01' for the most part, they did a ton of old country gospel time tunes, often as opener. He was a great harmony singer on those (Rock of Ages, Hallelujah I'm Ready To Go, Somebody Touched Me, etc) and other old time covers...I love a good Rovin' Gambler from that time. Here's some killer live stuff from 2000, can't see Larry since they zoom in on Bob the whole time, but you can sure hear him. You can also see Dylan looking like a riverboat gambler and playing his strange chords that rival Weir even... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_juKSv6Kec As far as post Dylan, he dominated those albums with Levon and it was fantastic. I'm not so much on the live stuff, though I would have gave my left foot to have gone to a Midnight Ramble (and I'm left footed!). But I'm not so much into the big saxophone, etc, sound. Some stuff worked really well, but I don't listen often to Ramble at the Ryman or the other live late Levon stuff. The MerleFest set from 2008 was available on iTunes and I really enjoyed some of it, Goin' Back to Memphis was great. I'll admit I don't know much about Teresa, besides being paired with Larry and adding much to Levon's band. But here's one featuring the two of them and miss Amy, and topical here, Mr. Bruce Hornsby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6bAb-Khg7c PS Hendrix - You saw the Band at the Academy of Music??? Very, very jealous. I missed them (and the Dead) by way too long, having just turned 30 a few weeks ago, but I consider them *my guys* if that makes sense. For one more Saturday night video..Mr. Rick Danko: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDm5o3FJ2Q8

I didn't buy the Europe 72 box or Spring 90 part one but have gotten all the Daves, 77 box, and spring 90 TOO. I really would love this box. I recall getting So Many Roads back in the day and being blown away by the way they covered their history....and now this beast. Is it worth $700? I'm excited to see the 80s and 90s getting picks although I would've went all in with Brent and gave 90 to him. I guess there's a lot of 90 Brent out there. So what's the consensus? Is this release worth it and how many are left now? For 95, I thought Seattle would've been the pick but I'll trust DL.

Just caught Larry & Teresa, with jorma k, about ..mm two months ago at Swallow Hill in Denver and man they were fantastic -- all acoustic. They did a GD song, but it wasn't Attics. This week: Amy Helm, Mavis Staples and Patti Griffin at Chautauqua in Boulder. Oh yeah! Gotta love that live thang. As for The Band, well, Watkins Glen, Roosevelt Stad two-nighter with GD, both in '73. Then just before the Last Waltz, The Band rocked the Academy of Music for the umpteenth time. I was in the balcony and man, that thing was flexing to the NY audience getting its rocks off on Levon & Co. Bless 'em!

APOLOGIES IF THIS POST DUPLICATES Your attention to one of my A-list shows made me smile! Various facets of 6/8 could serve as exemplars for an exhaustive range of commonly invoked DeadHead superlatives like cosmic, mind melting, other worldly, and a litany of others! You've identified the crown's jewel in the split PITB, but don't forget the delectable WR filling, worthy of a menu listing at Katz's Deli, in addition to a second course of epic Eyes that, in small pockets like 7:10, exemplifies the maturation of Keith's trademark contribution; as well, at 10:25, for a brief period, Jerry orbits independently around a tight planetary core of jazzy fusion until the ensemble realigns along the song's signature theme...all in all, it's about 57 minutes of pedigreed Dead that could take the podium for Best of Show alongside prime cuts from any era! While I've practically memorized a couple lines from Ross's brief, but indelible, review, I now reopen the DBase tome for those who might not be as familiar: "The great thing about the big 74 Dead jams is the way the band totally loses its identity as a bunch of hippies from Marin and turns itself (and the audience) into dinosaurs, galaxies, hurricanes, whirlpools, amoebas...about two minutes into the [Playin'] jam, Garcia is already so far gone into his prehistoric condor jag that the rest of the band has no choice but to 'boldly go where no man has gone before'. So, what started out as a nice outdoor-fun-festival-picnic-type event has suddenly become some kind of howling cosmic frontier back about 400 million years ago....This is unquestionably one of the most powerful Playin' jams in history" and "it culminates in a colossal giant-soundsystem roar that is probably still rattling windows at the center of the galaxy." Whew. With formal introductions completed, it's now Miller time: https://archive.org/details/gd1974-06-08.sbd.miller.97268.sbeok.flac16 peace/K

A germane inquiry I share, and one that sent me to my 'little black book' of personal reviews immediately after ordering last month(!); while, admittedly, I've not previously listened to most of the box's inventory, 12 of the shows were listed. Of particular note, I wonder about the reportedly missing material from '66, specifically, Minglewood; Cold Rain; BIODTL; Cream Puff; 'Z a Good Thing; and 2 apparently unspecified tracks (especially given that circulating material constitutes just over a half-hour of play time!). Moreover, I note the official release titled "Rare Cuts & Oddities 1966" contains 2 songs attributed to this show that (also) do not circulate among commonly available streaming and d/l sources (i.e., Gangster of Love and Don't Mess Up a Good Thing). Additionally, I wonder if our pending release will reveal '67's missing BIODTL. Also, given the technical issues plaguing circulating copies of the '84 SBD, will we see a clean board that eclipses Holtz's authoritative AUD (i.e., show me the Dew!). Finally, what repairs might we expect to the thin Evans AUD used to fill the SBD's missing BEW on Seamons' MTX of that fine '92 show? For the sake of curiosity (at least), I should be grateful for other information regarding incomplete or flawed circulating shows amongst The 30 outside my admittedly finite realm of familiarity! :) thanks and peace, K

I did it... yes, reluctantly, I did it. My wife would absolutely kill me if she knew, but I have until Sept 18 to worry about that... As a release...I guess I had to do it so I___ (I'm drawing a blank here) I guess I would have felt bad if I missed the bus and heard how great a ride it was... so now I'm on a parked bus waiting until Sept to start moving! I hope it's worth it...you guys really didn't have to price it so high... you could have at least carved it up into 4 parts (FWIW).

It's a bit overwhelming with the volume of shows and the price, but I'm in. The only concern I have is the packaging. Please just tell me that the individual show packaging in the box are nothing like the May 1977 box. I hated those oversized CD holders where the CD's slide around so much. I'm ok with either the Spring 1990 style or the Europe 72 style packaging. So will the 1977 show in this set be the Cornell show?

Looking at the Definitive Story track listing, it tells us what all the shows are going to be. I can't see forking over that much money for mostly shows I already have in good quality. Beyond that, I have never understood the box set deal. This is 2015. I just want the music and the flexibility to get the portions I want in download fashion. I need LESS stuff in my house. Whatever physical stuff I need, it's for my kids.

Placed order and it hung on the screen "order being processed please wait". Charge hits my card but no confirmation or order number. Call customer service, about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. "Sorry, we can't do anything. Wait until tomorrow and call back." Wait, but I NEED to make sure my order for the 700 dollar limited edition item went through. "Too bad." Can you file a complaint for me about how poorly the website is being run? "Nope, I am just customer service wouldn't even know what to do." So as of right now I am just in the wind. Tried again a few more times same result. Have no idea if I have an order, but I do have 2250.00 worth of preauths on my credit card.

Surprised they're both the same price-wouldn't the USB drive be a little cheaper without all the jacket materials, etc? The Europe box has proven to be the best deal they offered, 73 discs for $450 with shipping, (and before days of internet sales taxes) of one of the greatest tours by any band, anywhere, in the history of Earth. This still looks tempting, though (natch).

Shame there's nothing from '65 except a 45 that won't get played. Odd choice for 1995, I was really hoping for 5/21 in Vegas. Surely a show with Unbroken Chain should have been selected, 4/02 perhaps? Salt Lake City is a fun show though, just odd. I am really shocked they'd put out a show with Samba In The Rain!

iTunes kind of spoiled the slow reveal surprise; the suspense would have been fun. The RS article confirms the 2-22-69 and 10-12-84 shows. The 84 one is a highlight for me. 3-20-92 has me excited too!

The USB chip is only limited to 1,000 - but I don't think the actual downloads will be limited. The Spring Box #1 can still be downloaded from the dead.net. Plus, you can also download some of the individual Europe 72 shows which is currently out of print.

I am willing to spend the 800 bucks for the 30 trips, but never had so much trouble giving away my money before.... ohhh wait, it gets better....got through on the phone, after waiting for 45 minutes...and the dude said they cannot do anything, their system is down, and he can't order it for me, or reserve it, nothing....great, why even bother listing a phone number? the dude said to let the "your order being processed...." spin for a couple hours, that is the only chance I have... Someone needs to plan this better...got blown out on Chicago, now this....

I guess I should've sent the office the cool photos I have from this show a long time ago. It was a great day, though very foggy and cold in the Park. Hopefully someday the complete soundboard of Winterland 6/17/75 will be released as a Dave's Picks. Best version of "Peggy-O" ever, and the amazing show opener, the debut of "Crazy Fingers" (and Bill Graham's wonderful introduction).

Assuming that 11/28/80 Lakeland, FL is the pick, the question needed to be asked. Hopefully Gainesville 11/29/80 will be a future Dave's Pick. Interesting choices, some great ones, some slight head scratchers (I'm looking at you, '88 and '90). Many that I've heard before, but some that were under the radar (and possibly one from the Mountain Girl tape stash?).

While I thought the release this year was going to center around the possible return of the Betty Board shows this is just a monster release.Cheers to all those who had called a show from each year as what was going to make up the box set. Wife is going to kill me but I couldn't resist ordering this. I have every other official release and bonus disc so missing this gem would leave a massive hole in my personal vault of official releases. It is a bummer that they aren't going to release individual shows like Europe '72. Hopefully because of its size it will take awhile to sell out and allow people to save up a little or mentally and financially justify a purchase of this size. With all that being said, WOW, what a helluva a way to track the Grateful Dead's career and honor their 50th Anniversary!

way to much to fast. too bad the Miami 10-26-89 show is in this box, also the 1980 Lakeland Fl show, I was at both, now I will never get to hear them in high quality. How much more can we fans take? first, 1000's of $ for a ticket, now 700 bucks for a few shows worth having, all I can say is, if you can afford this, more power to you. Another big disappointment to all us working fans.

Hoping my order went thru, though my experience is similar- Frozen order confirmation page, and the pre-authorization is on the card. I didn't get a confirmation number- Hopefully there'll be a confirmation e-mail sent soon. Can't really afford to try again, one authorization is already too much.

Most of these tracks (if not the entire show) are available already, just not as official releases. So although there may be some gems in here, you can find great-quality, free downloads of this stuff at archive.org. Well, you *could*, anyway. Doubtless those freebies will be streaming only, now. But for those of us who already snagged them off archive.org, this set isn't as amazing as it could have been. Since this is (possibly) the last big, grand release, other than the occasional Dave's Picks, I have to assume that there isn't much in the Vault that hasn't seen the light of day by other means already - or there is some, but it's of terrible quality. There are a lot of shows from 1966 and 1967 that are unfindable at the moment. If they existed anywhere, they'd probably be in the Vault. But there are some more recent ones that aren't available for download, and I'm not sure why - 2/20/95 SLC, 6/14/94 Seattle, 3/17/94 Rosemont, 6/1/91 LA Coliseum, 5/6/89 Frost, 3/14/82 Davis, 2/6/79 Tulsa. These are all streaming on Archive. I don't think they've been released, but maybe I'm wrong. There is no real good reason to release these in one huge pile. It feels shortsighted to me, but I'm a consumer, not a businessman.

I placed my order 3 hours ago and it was really slow, thought it would never go through and finally got my confirmation after maybe 7-10 minutes of just spinning doing nothing.

any charge will most likely be an Authorization Hold. In some systems, pressing order more than once may cause another hold to show up. Hopefully that is not the case if anyone was using a debit card. Any charge should fall off in a few busines days. The website was tweaking out for a while, I wasnt able to place an order either. If an order is successful, it should access funds for a few days and then a charge will disappear. However, the funds were not taken. An actual charge should reappear when it is shipped. The big box has a few shows Dave mentioned in his Top 10 Essential shows everybody wished they were. 11.10.67, 2.22.69, and 10.12.84. I knew there was gonna be a catch to the DREAM BOWL. One of the ultimate skull splitters in GDHistory. Getting your hands on 2.22.69 will co$t ya $750 big ones.

There are so many huge top shelf shows in this set. $700 bucks is just....yikes. Considering how much some people are asking for their Winterland '77 and Fillmore West '69 boxes, this is a steal. For once, I honestly cannot complain about a lack of variety here. I was at that 3/20/92.

First, the clunkiness of this site. Try listening to the audio clips, and posting a comment at the same time... can't do it.The numbering of the comments is odd and confusing. Post a comment, and then you are back to the top of the page and have to scroll down to continue reading. Awkward. Website seems to not be able to handle all the traffic. What are you thinking? You offer a paltry 6,500 copies of this box, and you expect it to sell slowly? There are potentially MILLIONS of customers for something like this. If even 1% of the fans can afford the $700+ this costs, that's still many, many more than a mere 6,500. And 1,000 USB's? Seriously? Why not charge $4-500 for the digital only version and offer the same number as the physical set? I would really be curious to be at the meetings where these details are discussed. Some of these decisions don't really seem to make much sense. I'm sure the box, with the large book and extras will be beautiful. I have the Europe '72 trunk, and it's fantastic. But "30 Trips" is just too much money for me (and it appears that even trying to buy it today might be impossible). And Dave, I love ya, but get a friggin' windscreen for your video camera. The distorted stereo wind noise is incredibly annoying. You're talking to dedicated TAPERS out here... sound quality, even for little messages like the seaside chats, is important.

when i listen to the 87 Dew included in the RS article ... wow. the guitar is just searing, psychedelic, and jerry's age-worn voice lends the perfect mood to the tune. i get the cry for more 80s.

...is it a fact that the credit card isn't actually charged until this ships? Just the authorization now, but the actual charge later? Anyone know? Thanks.

My order has been processing for over an hour. Got through to a helpful guy at customer service who informed me that the ordering system crashed. He took my e-dress, and said that they would e-mail me as soon as the problem was resolved. Many wanted lots of 80s and 90s. Many wanted the shows that were mentioned at the onset of the Dave's series. Many knew that this would be a MAJOR!! box. Many had many months to save. Many are complaining anyway? This box is fantastic!
