We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.
The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.
The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.
The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Do you really think it's cool to ask people to make copies of any of the content here? If you're going to ask for pirated copies, maybe do it in a different forum...

I would say that Yes set is way more overpriced. It's seven shows of exactly the same setlist, with very little difference in the way each song is played. They sound great, to be fair, but you don't need seven of them.
Mundane thoughts through a mundane day.......
Now that the initial excitement had ebbed, a few thoughts I've had about this box set.As Grandpa used to say when folding in poker, "it's too rich for my blood." As much as I want one I'll have to pass.
I'm glad the '69 show wasn't from the Ark. That mini box option is still available.
The '80 show wasn't AK, that mini box option is still out there dangling.
With the simultaneous release of 15 80's and 90's shows, DaP will never come out with another 80's again.
I still think they'll sell single releases of this set. Way too much cash money to leave on the table.
I could be wrong, and it doesn't matter if I am.

The case for individual downloads
On the whole interesting conversation. If the band wants to release this set, they should be able to (the Mercedes-Benz argument). I also completely agree with the argument that many have made that the individual members of the band and their families should be richly compensated for all their hard work and for the great times they shared with so many of us.
That said, demand clearly is greater than supply, which means there's still money to be made, from the 6501st person and after who didn't get to buy the box set, and for those who for whatever reason would purchase individual shows, either to manage cash flow or because of a lack of interest in certain periods.
The high price of 30 Trips is justified (presumably) by the fact that each purchase is 1/6500, the high quality of the recording, etc. so making more box sets available would be a mistake. Making individual shows available for download only (although I LOVED the approach with the 72 shows) would preserve the value of the complete box set, while still allowing more people to spend money, which would furthur compensate the band. Everybody wins.
I'm a Dave's Picks subscriber; it wouldn't bother me if those shows were available for download either, and I would continue to subscribe. The more the music can get out there, the better.
Regardless of how people may feel, the box sets will sell out. But if no future options exist to buy individual concerts in the future, the band is leaving money on the table, and restricting the distribution of some of its best shows ever by only allowing 6500 with $700 to spend in June 2015 to purchase the music.

What flavor scraps will you be serving ? that is a very generous offer. Way more than Customer Service has dished out. When and where can I send the funds ? but first things first, before my debit card is tied up. Are your servers equipped to handle more than three orders at the same time if somebody is interested in your pizza crust scraps from 85 ?
Order problems etc.
Well it looks like they are sorting out the ordering problems. Emails have been arriving on this and I agree they are unclear at times on what is being done. However, they do provide order numbers for the cancelled and OK order(s). What you need to do to check things are now OK is go to the check status option on the store site and individually check all the order numbers you have received, whatever the emails may have said. The cancelled one(s) will say order cancelled and the OK one(s) wil say back ordered. If it turns out that either you have too many or too few ( I.e. None!) boxes on order then you have something concrete to get back to the store help people about. Having order numbers to reference will help them a lot. They seem to prefer to reactivate cancelled orders rather than just let you re-order from scratch but you can offer this if you have no or insufficient orders up and running.
On the question of individual releases, they have said that there will be no individual releases of CDs but this does not rule out downloads. They have issued the downloads as a USB stick as the combined size of the high res flac files and the 320kb MP3 files would take forever to download. This would not be the case with individual shows. If you want it all you should still go for the USB stick as it will be the cheaper option than paying for and downloading each show individually.
"Hideously Priced" ? I think not
$699.98 is expensive. Don't get me wrong. But look at the price per disc of the music when compared to other box sets:- Spring '90 = $11.11 per disc
- May '77 = $10.71 per disc
- Spring '90 TOO = $10.44 per disc
- 30 Trips = $8.74 per disc
- E'72 = $6.16 per disc
So this set is not priced badly at all. Plus hopefully the cds themselves will be packaged a bit better then the E'72 sleeves which everyone hates. And a book of 288 pages should be worth a few dollars. I think this box is fairly priced. Expensive? Yes.

Of course they wouldn't ever admit individual releases at this time. Their trying regardless to sell out this massive blotted and surely well done box. As a collector and fan I still won't back down and pay $750 for 80 discs. I don't get Rhino and their decisions. I did buy Delaney & Bonnie W/ Eric Clapton On Tour Rhino Handmade $80 4 discs. 3 shows. Way over priced! I still play the original single release. Now "YES "incredible New 1972 Box Set CTTE shows what 7 shows 14 disc I purchased From Import CD online store located in California to my door in NY. What $60 bucks. Say what u will this dead box $200 overpriced. Wolfeman

A small word of support, and other factors.
When you add in Artist Royalties (GD, Ice Nine and other songwriting royalties), mixing and mastering costs, allocations for overhead and eqpt (TRI, vault storage, GD staff), restoration, Plagent, Rhino production costs and D. Lemieux...
I have always had $10 a disc stuck in my mind as a threshold figure. If you go too much below that the whole stack of cards this house is built on could collapse under its own weight.
I don't have figures and am not an insider. But I think this release is expensive because its massive. To my knowledge, this is the biggest box set ever produced. Fitting, don't you think?

The Price is Right
The Process has been awful.. Once the dust settles and the 3rd party Customer Service folks get in contact with the folks at Rhino to clear things up and send out compensation for this blunder, I will be satisfied.
Damage control by cancelling screen shot orders for all folks regardless for those individuals with a recorded conversation speaking to a person hired to work for the Customer Service ensuring you have Order A and Order B must not have importance. Leads me to believe the folks at CS, for one, have no influence. And two, whatever they say is not to be trusted.
The website issues
Hi there long time lurker, finally jumping in the pool.
While I'm not sure, it seems that Dead.net is just another band website that has been outsourced to Musictoday, who are the worst when it comes to preorders, fulfillment and most other services a proper online store has.
They seem to be behind, the Zappa.com site and the Authentic Hendrix which are okay if they have what you want in stock, but often sell items that are long out of print and stock, but never close the order.
The clue is customer service in VA, the home of Musictoday and their supervisors.
That being said I look forward to getting the new set in Sept.
Thanks Dave and TPTB for putting together another great set to add to my collection.

As a gesture of good faith I think everyone that bought a box and had trouble with the processing, i.e. multiple charges should get a free GD t-shirt thrown in to boot! You can interpret 'GD' however you want. Eternally Grateful.

I can't believe this:
1) There's a new release and some folks find it to be too expensive
2) There are people openly trolling for folks to split the cost with so they can pirate copies on the Dead's official site.
3) Someone chimes in out of the blue to say, "Hey they're picking on me."
4) There is disappointment with some of the show choices.
5) There are massive ordering snafus with an online sales only web site that can't handle a few thousand orders.
It's just too weird. It must be.................a Thursday. Because this doesn't happen more than once a week. lol
Buy it or don't. It's a free country. It's one of billions of products out there that you can choose to pay your money for, or move along.

Did anyone notice that there are more shows in this box from the second half of the year than the first half? Once again it shows just how biased Dave is when he is selecting release material. Come on Dave, all months should be considered.After much consideration I made the decision to order. I wasn't going to due to the cost but I knew I would regret this once it sold out. Plus these sets never depreciate like buying a new car.

Perhaps the biggest pop/rock box set, but in classical music, there are several that approach 200 discs, and 100-disc sets are not that uncommon. (There are a few dozen of them.)

I have a feeling we're going to see exactly how much people prefer the pre-Brent days come September, after these ship. I think eBay will be flooded with shows for sale from '79 - '95, and not so much '66 - '78.

I gave this one some thought....700$ damn..... Not the end of the world, but a big chunk of change for music no doubt... I have to give props to Dave and the rhino folks for such an ambitious, incredible concept.... For the life of me, I can't really believe people would complain about something so broad and encompassing..... The concept, price or not, really does honor the rich, historical legacy of the greatest band whom ever roamed the land.... This is why I purchased.... Let's say your wheelhouse is the 70s..... Mine too.... The truth is, I seldom reach for 66, 67, 68 or even 69.....love the early primal, but it's a raw sound that I'm in the mood for occasionally.... The same goes for 91-95....I actually never reach for those years.... Same goes for 82, 83, and 84.....you might ask yourself, if almost 15 years of the box are years that one primarily doesn't listen to, then why buy? I looked at it like this.... Aside from the amazing design and essays, which i have to admit, I love to read, the next time I'm in the rare mood for 1967, 1993 or 1984, Instead of wondering what the hell show I should choose, I can now just look the the box for a handpicked, highly regarded Dave Lemieux vault special....complete with liner notes and packaging....it's actually really great.....I feel for those who have trouble with the price.... I really do....but at the end of the day folks, it's gonna be ok, you can swing it with a credit card... You only live once and I feel like this one, because of the wide range of selections will be the gift that keeps on giving.....72, 90 boxes actually brought me limited satisfaction.... What a complete joke. Who came up with these? I mean really, the MSG 1991 show with Branford Marsalis? I missed that one by a night, but I was at the next 3. How about one of those? Who cares if the Branford show was amongst the best they ever played? And 9/18/87 - again I missed that one by a night too. So big deal, they played a Morning Dew that night that ultimately resulted in them having to completely renovate the inside of the Garden. (as a side note 9/16 had a killer first set Touch>Scarlet - filler maybe?).The Miami Dark Star from 89, those lame Oxford shows that nobody ever talks about. Yes, I know I've been pining for the Manor Downs show to be released, but as a Dave's Pick. Maine 84?Isnt there a crappy youtube of that show somewhere online? And the 1980 pick - dont we already have a show from like, 2 days later that smokes? Were they having a good week or something? And lets face it, it's not like the Cape Cod Coliseum shows, or Europe 1990, or Waterbury 72, or yet another Fall of 1973 release, as if we dont already have enough from that tour incredible though it was. And more Spring 77 too. I guess we can never have enough, particularly when those shows from April really dont circulate.

Some of your points. . .. Are, well, on point.
Although the first point, "1) There's a new release and some folks find it to be too expensive," however, is a legitimate concern for many average income people.
Sure one would expect a big boxset during an anniversary year but not necessarily a boxset which is almost double the cost of E72? Likewise with E72,and perhaps especially with E72 as an example, which had some shoddy production issues and was under-produced for the actual demand, it is not unreasonable for some people to scratch their heads over something so expensive. The price per disc is reasonable. I think what is alarming for people of lesser means is the the much larger price tag than E72 together with what seems like a potentially 'only a couple of days left' sell-out due to GD/Rhino 'misunderestimating' the markets' demand and supply.
Hence it is pressure, pressure, pressure, spend these big bucks now because there are only 6500 and maybe only 48 hours left before it is gone, gone, gone!!

I have no qualms with the shows and them making some bucks. More power to them! Fair play.
The arguments made by some that well you could guess something big was coming so you had a year does not persuade me otherwise. You could argue that after the E72-Almost-Fiasco that one should expect smaller. Or 'compartmentalized' smaller like the Spring 1990s. For example: 30 Trips in three boxes divided by three decades, of course, available for separate purchase?
Or something like that.
Nevertheless, this box is a good thing and the cost per disc is excellent.
Regarding some who mention just putting it on a credit card which will quickly disappear until the September ship date? I do not like credit cards and prefer using one specific debit card which means all of the money has to be in a checking account if only for a few days before the actually charge in September or you will get 'overdraft fees.'
I think "KeithFan" had his entire debit card-checking account drained due to unintended multiple orders when he only wanted one. I work in a restaurant and have seen mistakes with debit cards that would make peoples head explode. The time and aggravation of of dealing with "Big Dumb Greedy Bank" is painful sometimes. I once deposited $500 into my Chase Checking account and was unable to use that money on my debit card for over one weak due to their mistake! The time and aggravation of fixing it? Good %&*@ing Grief Charlie Brown!

Granted the credit vs. debit is a minority issue which GD/Rhino cannot and should not factor in.
The seemingly low production number of 6500 selling so quickly with the large price tag is a valid concern for many. And being in business, I do wonder about GD/Rhinos research and development when I see a supply and demand situation like this?
Yet like I mentioned before, due to the unintended multiple order snafus then maybe GD/Rhino got 6500 figure correct for market demand but I doubt it.
It just seems like there should be more available for a longer period of time when making it limited together with per unit cost increase far above anything previous released. We'll see if they misjudged their projected sales figures.
May 77 seems to be a case of them getting it right: It comes out in the Spring but does not sell out until Christmas and Chanukah. A matter of days sell-out seems like a not well thought through plan. Well see.
Regarding burning copies of shows to share?
That is OK with me although I am not doing it in practice -BUT, BUT, BUT - that is only if once this physical product is gone forever that no downloads sales take place. if it is available in some format then you have pay the band. If it is not then it seems fair to me. Heck, I would be happy to make a donation to Phil's Unbroken Chain Foundation. Some laws are wrong, copy right law included.
I never cared much or 'miracle seekers' at shows. With all due respect to those of you who did that.
And one more thing: Whining about Whining is Whining(to those of you who do that LOL!).

Splitting up the box
I have to agree with fourwindsblow. People already planning on splitting up the set, before even seeing the whole enchilada first will most likely regret that decision or change their minds before doing so.
I suspect that those who plan on splitting this set up will be regretful when they realize they broke the number one cardinal rule of collecting by altering the original condition and trying to sell incomplete sets. The payoff will be significantly lower than with a complete set. This set is a resellers wet dream with a potential high return, but only if they are complete sets.
...but hey, it's your money. To each their own. Even though I have my favorite eras, I would never dream of splitting up this set. The sum of the whole is greater than it's individual parts.
This box set may be the single most perfect release to date from a variety viewpoint.

Regarding the whining - it falls into two camps. 1. the cost alienates many people who would love this but can't afford it, which is a legitimate gripe...and 2. the era specific crowd, particularly those who only like the first half of the Dead's touring years. I don't see a single '80s/'90s fan or "love-it-aller" complaining about the content of this release.
2015 and WHY no Bluray version and all boxes gets a USB drive?!
Hi,Honestly, why didn´t all CD box set have the USB drive with lossless and mp3 versions of the 30 shows?
And while we´re at it, they should have had 1 CD version of the box set and 1 with Bluray discs.
The Bluray format would have given us complete shows without having to swap discs all the time!
I don´t see the value of the USB drive box set... Both would have been an nice gesture to us fans! 600 dollars for an USB drive, not so much!!

I'm going to ruffle some feathers by this post but I dont care....it needs to be said. I am bothered by the price because I dont think profit is what the Dead were originally about. But what even bothers me more, is all the so-called Dead Heads who buy up multiple copies of limited edition releases like this and the Dave's picks just so you can turn around and sell them on Ebay for 3-4 times the original cost all to make a profit. Excuse me if I question intent as a so called fan. Do you really think Jerry would admire that ? That is why i think Dead.net should impose a min # per customer. People who do this aren't about the music....its just a way for them to make a quick buck by charging someone else an absurd price once the product is sold out. Its sad.

But the disagreement, the folks who are doing that with entire sets just want some cash in return. Breaking it up bit by bit will give you more $$. Sell all the trinkets and each show for 50 a pop and you will take in over $1500 easy..

I feel all warm and fuzzy that you read my post about them wiping out my bank account. I guess I should mention at this point that the situation was rectified quickly; but the five hours I spent on the phone sucked, as did the 24 hours with no money in my account, while shit got taken care of. It took a lot of phone calls to both my bank and dead.net customer support, and I received the answer "there's nothing more we can do" from both of them before I finally conferenced them in together and put my life skills to work (seriously, to get the two of them talking about their policies and to find a workaround for my problem made me feel like I missed my calling as a psychologist, or possibly loan-shark-enforcer).
Someone is selling the shows for $65 a piece on eBay already. So that's how those of you who can't come up with funds for the set can do it: Pick 11 shows you don't plan to keep, sell them for 65 bucks today, take their money and buy the set from dead.net. You just have to hope you collect enough scratch before they actually sell out on dead.net.

Let me ask you and others here about my one and only complaint: Do you not think that more than 6500 should have been produced when it sells out so quickly when factoring in a less than usual and customary cost increase?

There's still at least 2250 left. Assuming that many orders were cancelled and stock numbers went back up things seem to have slowed down slightly. This might not sell out anytime soon.
Time will tell if resale on unopened boxes will be worth it. If they cost $699.99 now who in their right mind will shell out $1500 for one of these? If you want the complete box and are on the fence folks I would recommend finding a way to make it work.

I don't see much of anyone complaining regarding eras, but even if this were true, it is probably because there are maybe 5 Deadheads on the planet who love the 80s/90s and can't stand the 60s/70s. The reverse is not true.
