Headed down the street after work for a Happy Hour with my co-workers. Going to a Vodka Bar called Subzero. They have a bar made of ice like a hockey rink to keep your drink ice cold. Party time in 25 minutes Wanna tell you a story, About the house-man blues I come home one Friday, Had to tell the landlady I done lost my job She said that don't confront me, Long as I get my money next Friday Now next Friday come I didn't get the rent, And out the door I went So I goes to the landlady, I said, "You let me slide?" I'll have the rent for you tomorrow Or the next day I don't know So said let me slide it on you know people, I notice when I come home in the evening She ain't got nothing nice to say to me, But for five year she was so nice Lord she was lovey-dovey, I come home one particular evening The landlady said, "You got the rent money yet?", I said, "No, can't find no job, Therefore I ain't got no money to pay the rent" She said "I don't believe you're tryin' to find no job" Said "I seen you today you was standin' on a corner, Leaning up against a post" I said "But I'm tired, I've been walkin' all day" She said "That don't confront me, Long as I get my money next Friday" Now next Friday come I didn't have the rent, And out the door I went So I go down the streets, Down to my good friend's house I said "Look man I'm outdoors you know, Can I stay with you maybe a couple days?" He said "Uh, let me go and ask my wife" He come out of the house, I could see it in his face I know that was no He said "I don't know man, ah she kinda funny, you know" I said "I know, everybody funny, now you funny too" So I go back home I tell the landlady I got a job, I'm gonna pay the rent She said "Yeah?" I said "Oh yeah" And then she was so nice, Lord, she was lovey-dovey So I go in my room, pack up my things and I go, I slip on out the back door and down the streets I go She a-howlin' about the front rent, she'll be lucky to get any back rent, She ain't gonna get none of it So I stop in the local bar you know people, I go to the bar, I ring my coat, I call the bartender Said "Look man, come down here", he got down there So what you want? One bourbon, one scotch, one beer Well I ain't seen my baby since I don't know when, I've been drinking bourbon, whiskey, scotch and gin Gonna get high man, I'm gonna get loose, Need me a triple shot of that juice Gonna get drunk, don't you have no fear I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer One bourbon, one scotch, one beer But I'm sitting now at the bar, I'm getting drunk, I'm feelin' mellow I'm drinkin' bourbon, I'm drinkin' scotch, I'm drinkin' beer Looked down the bar, here come the bartender I said "Look man, come down here" So what you want? One bourbon, one scotch, one beer No, I ain't seen my baby since the night before last, Gotta get a drink man, I'm gonna get gassed Gonna get high man, I ain't had enough, Need me a triple shot of that stuff Gonna get drunk, won't you listen right here, I want one bourbon, one shot and one beer One bourbon, one scotch, one beer Now by this time I'm plenty high, You know when your mouth a-getting dry you're plenty high Looked down the bar I say to my bartender I said "Look man, come down here", he got down there So what you want this time? I said "Look man, a-what time is it?" He said "The clock on the wall say three o'clock. Last call for alcohol, so what you need?" One bourbon, one scotch, one beer No, I ain't seen my baby since a nigh' on a week, Gotta get drunk man, so I can't even speak Gonna get high man, listen to me, One drink ain't enough Jack, you better make it three I wanna get drunk, I'm gonna make it real clear, I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

Goodnight Irene, Goodnight Miami, Goodnight Geeky!!!!! Cya on the flip side ...... Well this gigolo's jumping salty, ain't no trade out on the streets, Half past the unlucky, and the hawk's a front-row seat Dressed in full orchestration, stage-door Johnny's got to pay, And sent him home talking 'bout the one that got away Could have been on Easy Street, could have been a wheel, With irons in the fire and all them business deals But the last of the big-time losers shouted before he drove away, "I'll be right back, as soon as I crack the one that got away" Well, the ambulance drivers, they don't give a shit, They just want to get off work, and The short stop and the victim are already gone berserk And the shroud-tailor measures him for a deep-six holiday, The stiff is froze, the case is closed on the one that got away Now Jim Crow's directing traffic with them cemetery blues, With them peculiar-looking trousers, them old Italian shoes And a wooden kimono that was all ready to drop in San Francisco Bay But he's mumbling something all about the one that got away And Costello was the champion at the St. Moritz Hotel, And the best this side of Fairfax, reliable sources tell But his reputation is at large, and he's at Ben Frank's every day, Waiting for the one that got away He got a snakeskin sportshirt, and he looks like Vincent Price, With a little piece of chicken, and he's carving off a slice Someone tipped her off, and she'll be doing a Houdini now any day She shook his hustle, and a Greyhound bus'll take the one that got away Well, Andre's at the piano behind the Ivar in the sewers, With a buck a shot for pop tunes, and a fin for guided tours He could-a been in "Casa Blanca", he stood in line out there all day Now he's spilling whiskey and learning songs about a one that got away Well I've lost my equilibrium and my car keys and my pride, The tattoo parlor's warm, and so I hustle there inside And the grinding off the buzz-saw, "What you want that thing to say?" I says, "Just don't misspell her name, buddy, she's the one that got away"

I just want to say that I think the GD organization is doing a pretty good job of handling this whole adventure. Sure just like Gimme Some Lovin when Brent fails to recognize the tune and fails to kick in the big organ intro, things got off to a rough start. Chicago was a mess, the demand was unexpected, seating charts re-written, behind the stage seating etc etc. But the boys learn from mistakes and things have gotten better, and I appreciate that. Bravo for handling Santa Clara well. For folks with Chicago tickets perhaps SC was an insult, but as someone who needed tickets at the time, Santa Clara was handled well. Friday release of tickets. Once again Dead Heads with the spirit to try one more time, it seems a subset of them were rewarded. Well done. GDTSTOO in general seems to have done well and when possible did the right thing. Sure today people are pissed about $200 tickets being in the upper tiers and that does seems a bit sloppy in hindsight. I think the choice they had to make was to give tickets or not give tickets. So the seating chart went out the window, but overall I think the band has had to fight with the venue, fight with TM to try and make things as good as they can for us. -- Tom

Yeah, they did they best they could considering the mess they caused in the first place. Hindsight is 20/20. Let's be real, the organization doesn't need praise, just understanding for trying to fix the biggest ticket fuck up in history. Tom, look up cluster-fuck in the dictionary, there' a picture of TM spinning wheel with the Dead50 logo on top. I love the Dead, but I'm not drinking that Kool Aid.

Tom - You know I love you man, but you have to be kidding. A bit sloppy? Most folks I know would call it theft. Sure the buyers didn't have to 'click' purchase. 400 level for 200 because that's what the market will bear? You'd have to be pretty heavily dosed to say they handled things 'pretty well'. This is the biggest cluster fuck (or the most brilliant) in the annals of modern concert promotion. Some people got some splaining to do. Now that I have that out of my system, lets's party! Peace, gob

Yes, it's a good day for singing a song, and it's a good day for moving along; Yes, it's a good day, how could anything be wrong, A good day from morning' till night Yes, it's a good day for shining your shoes, and it's a good day for losing the blues; Everything to gain and nothing' to lose, A good day from morning' till night I said to the Sun, "Good morning sun Rise and shine today" You know you've gotta get going If you're gonna make a showin' And you you've got the right of way. 'Cause it's a good day for paying your bills; And it's a good day for curing your ills, So take a deep breath and throw away the pills; 'Cause it's a good day from morning' till night. from the interweb (link at bottom) Ways and Means: Getting There Public Transit: On Fourth of July weekend, Chicago’s lakefront crowds up and Lake Shore Drive slows to a crawl. Beat the traffic by taking the CTA’s Red, Green, or Orange lines to the Roosevelt stop. From there, it’s just a 15-minute walk east to Soldier Field. Buy a train pass in advance to avoid the long lines that form at the L stops. (You can buy a 3-day Ventra pass for $20 online). Taxis, Uber, and Pedicabs: Soldier Field is removed from major streets with through traffic, so hailing a cab or coordinating with an Uber driver can be difficult. If you’re too wiped out to walk back to the train after the show, consider one of the pedicabs that will undoubtedly be circling the area. The back of an open-air rickshaw is a great spot for enjoying views of downtown Chicago and the Museum Campus. Shuttles: Bars such as Reggies (2105 S. State St.) in the South Loop and aliveOne (2683 N. Halsted St.) in Lakeview are offering shuttle services and packages to help you get to and from the venue. Deadhead Pro Tip: “Goin’ Down the Road Feelin’ Bad” was written in 1931 by a traveling fedora-salesman/folk singer stuck in traffic on the Edens Expressway. That may or may not be true, but if you’re traveling that way, be prepared for gridlock on the Edens and Kennedy (I-90/94) during rush hour. I Sat Down to My Supper, 'Twas a Bottle of Red Whiskey: Food & Drink For the Parking-Lot Chef: The South Loop Market (1720 S. Michigan Ave.) stocks organic groceries and more than 300 vintage beers to keep you sustained in the lots. Pre-Show Eats: Nearby restaurants include the throwback Jewish deli Eleven City Diner (1112 S. Wabash Ave.) and Cafecito (26 E. Congress Pkwy.), which specializes in Cuban sandwiches and coffee. Further north, vegetarians will find seitan burgers and tacos at Native Foods Cafe (14 S. Clinton St.) in the Loop. Liquor Stores: South Loop standbys include Warehouse Liquors (634 S. Wabash Ave.) and a Binny’s Beverage Depot (1132 S. Jefferson St.). Deadhead Pro Tip: If you’re exploring the Loop, you might as well wander past the historic Auditorium Theatre (50 E. Congress Pkwy.). Located about a mile from Soldier Field, this registered national landmark hosted many memorable Dead shows from 1971 to 1977. Listen to the Music Play: Related Shows & Streaming Options During the Show: If you weren’t lucky enough to score tickets on July 3 or 4, head to City Winery (1200 W. Randolph St.) to watch a live HD stream on a massive screen. Park West (322 W. Armitage Ave.) will also be streaming the first two nights, with Leftover Salmon serving as the musical hosts. After the Show: There are too many after shows to list, but we recommend you check out The Music Never Stopped, a citywide festival featuring acts such as Railroad Earth, Gene Ween, Particle, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. The festival takes place at various venues across town. Brunch the Next Day: City Winery’s brunch shows will feature food and performances by Steve Kimock and Jerry Joseph, plus never-before-seen Dead videos. Mandolin legend David Grisman should provide a nice landing at his Sunday gig at the Palmer House Hilton (17 E. Monroe St.). Bound to Cover Just a Little More Ground: Around the City Carol’s Pub | Uptown: Cheap beer. Outlaw country. Carol’s (4659 N. Clark St.) is about 10 miles from Soldier Field, but there’s definitely time to get there after the show—it’s open until 5 a.m. on Saturdays. On Saturday nights, the house band belts out a mix of Cash, Haggard, and Dylan to a raucous, line-dancing crowd. Jerry’s | Multiple Locations: You can guess where the name comes from. Locations in Andersonville (5419 N. Clark St.) and Wicker Park (1938 W. Division St.) feature tons of creative sandwiches, plus good beers and even better tunes. The Green Mill | Uptown: If you’re staying up north and looking for late-night music on Saturday, check out Sabertooth, whose Green Mill (4802 N. Broadway) gig runs from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. and will likely feature a few Dead tunes taken out for long jazzy walks. It won’t hurt to brush up on our guide to jazz shows before you go. Deadhead Pro Tip: If you’re at the Green Mill, look next door and give a nod to the now-shuttered Uptown Theatre. That was the Dead’s default Chicago home from 1979 to 1981. https://www.groupon.com/articles/grateful-dead-fare-thee-well-concert-i…

Thanks Totes - and for those that missed it, the identical information was already sent out in yesterday morning's Vol. XXX; No.1. It was a purposely re-posted note we all originally received from Geo on Sunday. So now you all have this 3x over :-) Cheers !!

I'm gonna ride this bitch til the bitter end or July 6th, whichever comes first..... I welcome all SDers to do the same, for it is the sojourn not the sojourners that make this a memorable time..... now by special request....on K DED.... Toots and the Maytalls doing their 1969 classic.... Pressure Drop..... rrrrrgrrrr out.....Toonces take the wheel.... He can drive, just not very well......

I'm waiting for the 24-bit version. Maybe Elvis found missing tickets under the GDTS couch cushions. Did anyone else not receive tickets that first received a confirmation? Crazy weird. We need to get Elvis in the house to one last number for rrrrgrrrr. Font's I'm usually not reading all email unless I need to. I'm about 10 update editions behind in email, although the groupon thingy did look vaguely familiar. lol. I figure you'll have it all rounded up in one final grand email on July 1. Back to the mines......

Some days the barometer is on the smiling sun, other days on the rain cloud. Other days, it's just one the sun/rain. Although the destination is seen unclearly, we've got a lot of fair weather days ahead of us before the barometer points to the stealie face in Chicago. Sojourn onward!

Dogs without bones are unhappy dogs. We need happy dogs and happy dog owners. Post man is a head...give him the benefit of the doubt... for now. Elvis is drowning in tickets and envelopes...no doubt. Hold on tight. At the end of the sojourn this will all just be a small part of the sojourn. Storms...at least a few more on the horizon. Count on that.
