    We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

    The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

    The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

    The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

    Why The USB
    As I've stated in previous posts, I have every official release, on CD and over 1,000 GD shows in flac, and when 30 trips was announced, I could've got the box, but the USB looked cool, and was in High Res. files (I upload all my CD's to Apple Lossless anyway), so that's why I went for it. I'm not gonna cancel it, but I believe we should get something more than an old backstage pass, for our troubles (even Amazon would treat you better than this !). I just subscribe to Dave's Picks 2016, so a deal there is out, but how about a USB of some classy '60's shows 2/21/69, 11/11/67 etc. Maybe then we will have something to smile about ! Until then, we have put up with endless comments about good the fu%^& box is ! Whoever it is at Rhino or Dead.net Customer Service, who is making the decision to NOT tell people what's going on, wants a kick in the nuts.Maybe they're trying to figure out how to make a $50 USB look like it's worth $700. Even if they dropped the price to $500, but still couldn't say when it would ship, would you buy it ? It's two months overdue, let's hope it doesn't become three.

    I think you're right, it probably had an affect, and not just on the tapers, but on the entire community. Sounds like a fine dissertation research topic to me. Let the scholarship begin!

    GDM paying for their own tapes
    They WILL actually pay to get their tapes back but its nowhere near the price that is usually requested. Dave always says they won't in his webchats, etc..but thats not exactly true. I forget where I read this...I'll try to find it after work...

    @Charlie, Yes, that was a very interesting article. Is that the one called "What's become of the Betty's?" I don't recall, but it was very informative specifically about the missing Betty Boards. I think many of us are hoping they've come to an agreement with that one hold-out owner, and are keeping it quiet to surprise us (that would be nice, wouldn't it?)! @Gary, thanks - I'm inclined to go with your memory, muddy or not, about 1987. I was never a taper at shows, but we usually got pretty crispy tapes from one of a few different folks (especially you Joel, if you're there!) shortly after the shows we went to, and we had friends that got some great sounding tapes. I was collecting tapes by 81, and when I didn't have a large collection at first, folks were very generous at sharing their favorite low-gen shows. God Bless them all!

    @Rbumkin - I do hope you find some of the '80's ones better.
    Sorry about your experience with the '83 show. I hope you like the ones that come after better, really. Others here have already extolled the virtues of the '84, 87, 88, and 89 shows in particular. I'm very glad that I like what I hear in that show. The Music Never Stopped has plenty of energy (Phil is all over the place.) Jerry has plenty of creative licks everywhere (to my ears) in this show. The Cumberland is fantastic, and the Ramble on Rose smokes. In the second set, the Scarlet Fire is an excellent one, Playing goes interesting places, the Space is unique and goes places, etc. I wasn't familiar with this one before the box (I don't think), so I didn't look at reviews before listening to it (at least, I don't remember doing so), but it's nice to know that I'm not entirely alone: From Deadbase (John W. Scott): "A show that opens with Music Never Stopped, sigh. And they never lose their stride. Cumberland! A little fast, but hot hot hot, hot. Cassidy builds and builds, gaining tempo with intensity. Jerry pours out the notes at a breakneck pace. I keep expecting them to stumble at this pace, the jam is incredible.... the Scarlet was wonderful, one of the best versions that I have ever heard live. It was LONG ... and well jammed..." It goes on about the rest of the show in much the same manner. From the Taping Compendium, which includes MANY negative review for shows throughout 1983; this one was reviewed by Jeff Silberman, one of their most frequent reviewers: "Highlights: The Entire Show "... This show is most excellent, Deadbase ranks it one of the best of that year. The first-set song selection is top-notch from a raging "Music Never Stopped" opener to the smoking "Promised Land" closer. All the songs in between were well played, too. The second set features a dynamite "Scarlet">"Fire," the transition between which is exquisite. "Uncle John's Band" begins the second set proper and leads to a long and wonderful Playing. After the Drums, the highlight is the fine "Truckin'" Reviewers are just one person's subjective opinion, and my own are frequently different than in reviews I read. But, it's nice to know that I'm not entirely imagining things when that Cumberland rocked me out. Jerry is VERY present, and very emotional belting out the last parts of Rample On Rose. I could go on. I think that it is true that the recording is very dry and sterile - it doesn't have the hiss of the '82 show, but there is still a virtually complete lack of audience and a lack of anything to provide a 3D image; it's very clear, but is flat, two-dimensional. I think that can detract from the show, unless you automatically adjust your brain, so to speak, in the same way we used to for some iffy cassette recordings back in the day where you got to where you could automatically adjust without realizing you were doing it, and it was almost like you were at the show.

    I read a fairly detailed article in Relix recently that explained the May 8 Cornell tapes and a number of other Betty boards were purchased by third parties when the contents of the storage unit in which they were located were auctioned off in the mid '80s. That was apparently when a sizeable volume of the Betty boards began to circulate. The article states that the tapes are still in the possession of the third parties, who legally own the physical tapes but do not own the rights to the music and therefore can not legally release it commercially. The Dead justifiably don't want to pay to get their own music back and the third parties don't want to give the tapes back for free. If true, seems unlikely that there will be an official release of May 8, '77 Cornell.

    My memory is 1987. At times I was in the taper's section and got to know some of the folks. My memory seems to indicate that Betty swept through in late summer or fall 1987. However, I would not trust my memory 100%. Hope that helps clarify or muddle the situation. Some where around this time we also received the 3/25/66 Trooper's Hall tape. That was wild to get that. I know since we gravitated to taping very quickly, we spent inordinate amount of time in hotels making tapes. Would sometimes have the master of the night's show going and listening and trying to come down, while having another 4-10 decks going making other masters and making tapes everyone was bringing in to get each other copies. Man that was some fun times!

    If the 1983 show is the best of that year, wow what a sad year! I forced myself to listen to the whole thing, but I suppose I'll never bother again. Even Jerry at his best in this show is lazy and repetitive. And Bob, his phony vocals make me ill. At this point, I could vote this as the worst Dead show I've heard. So far my feelings about the lame '80's are being born out.

    Tape trading/recording history
    If you have or get the Taping Compendiums, volumes 2 and 3 each have great very lengthy articles in the early sections before the reviews start about tape trading, taping (including detailed and arcane information about equipment and the technology), and soundboards. I just noticed that they say the Cornell Betty tape started making the rounds in 1987. I don't know which is right, 1985 or 1987 - maybe someone can clarify this. Anyway, the compendiums are a lot of fun - lots of great information and reviews of every tape known about to the authors at the time they wrote them.

HCS probably was dropped from rotation because it was too hard to sing the high harmonies, and with the microphone setup in 1974, the high notes would not have carried over well. It came back because Vince could hit those high notes.

All I came up with for the possible missing and returned reel(s) from a late 69'/early 70 is 1/2/70/ and 12/30/69 which contains within everything but Dew. These shows seem fairly complete, so unlikely just Morning Dew would be missing. The missing reel(s) could come from shows which we have seen select songs be released like 11/7/69 or 2/8/70; maybe even the 12/10/69 Thelma show. And Todd you might be right, the bonus disc was the 4th show. All I know is I am done sleuthing (at least in this case) and will wait patiently for Dave's 15 to be announced and the arrival of the 30 box. Good things come to those who wait. ....us 'heads are a fanatical bunch. No wonder some non-fans think were are crazy. If I didn't love this band, I would call for straight-jackets for all of us. What are we doing with our lives!!.... ....edit. I agree. Here Comes Sunshine was shelved waaaay too soon. The '90's versions can't really hold a candle to the '73-'74 versions. Still cool they broke it out though....

profit makes the world go round, capitalism, what a concept. In the business I'm involved with making the customer happy is number 1 priority, period. Profit is not everything, unless that's what you're all about. We find that if you give a little, you get a lot in return. One of the things that drew me to the Grateful Dead was this band had a heart. Rhino, not so much. If time is money, and money is the root of all evil.............my head hurts. :)

for the name check. Still lurking from time to time and following the show from the fringes...it's been nearly a year. Been restoring my parents' old Quad 33/303 amplifier set up from 1972. Of course I had to use the Europe 72 box set to test it today, and it sounds ...sumptuous. What do I think about 30 Trips? Well .... oops, time's up. Take care.

Nice score brokedowndude,, was it inside the box ? I bought W77box at at mall music store a few years after release and it had bonus disc. I am guessing if it came from dead.net purchase it had the disc and shops that bought early would have gotten. I just scored a sealed copy of Winterland73, if any wants to trade for FW69 complete set, I can sweeten the deal by adding another sealed item, the Warlocks89 box. I would also have a Winterland 77 sealed from my ex-,, but either Dr. Rhino never sent the darn thing out or it was lost in transit.. Hebron the "Black Hole".. During 30 Days of Dead 2012.. I think she won for the track Passenger (5.26.77), a fitting song for her to be picked that day. And also fitting that the prize was supposed to be a killer set from 10 days later. I may take one last stab at contacting the Dr. and ask for tracking info this time.. I have an email that says it was sent, dang ittttt

Not impressed with the new formatting here. Also noticed we can no longer put more than 99 items in our cart. Interesting, that's totally my fault. I posted there were 1795 copies of 30 Trips left yesterday by seeing how many I could add to my cart, and strangely enough, I can no longer do that. The cart thing,, i thought they did away with that awhile ago. I know people were buying in bulk to sell the last copies of certain Road trips cause they knew it had less than 100,, For those interested in the the trip to Hawaii June 1970,, 6.12.70 was featured today,, Thats It For The Other One.. Vault Master Dave, states the first part of the show does not sound great,, and Bobby can be heard giving the local soundman some grief. Bear was not allowed out of CA and this began in March of 1970. In a couple of days, more from Hawaii will be featured. Probably 6.13.70, but tomorrow's choice will be some June 1976, which coincidently enough was the era I had been listening to right before I switched the radio CD player to Sirius this morning, (6.10.76) Jerry is a little low in the mix, the venue was so small, its a shame the guitar is not any louder, still a great recording

It is 9:13 PM here in Philly, for the last hour or so the Mrs. & I engaged in a discussion regarding, 30 Trips, the gist of the conversation is I'm trying every which way to acquire one for 2 reasons; 1) I'm a completest 2) I want it Now I have a Michael Jordan 86-87 Fleer rookie card graded PSA 8 that I could sell for at least 800 dollars the wife says to me if I am successful in obtaining "30 Trips BEFORE it sells out when will it ship, I tell her September 18th she says okay so it doesn't interfere with any "plans". The reason she wants to know is because when I ordered the E72 box set it was supposed to ship AFTER Labor Day however mine arrived the Friday BEFORE Labor Day, that weekend the wife's boss offered her FREE use of a beach front summer home in Margate, N.J., for the entire week from the Friday before until the following Sunday. Well we get everything done as far as our jobs are concerned I only stayed until Monday the wife & the kid stayed until Wednesday after Labor Day, we leave a key with our neighbor just so she can "check" on the house, collect the mail etc., etc. Well we leave Philly at around 11 AM we arrive in Margate at around 2 or so, just as we unload the car the neighbor calls & tells the wife a "big heavy" packaged arrived I ask the wife to ask the neighbor who sent it she says dead.net I say I am on my way. I took our daughter with me back to Philly to get my E72 box set, we get to Margate around 6:30 or so the wife was absolutely livid, I told her "listen dear I've waited since January for this box set there is no way I'm going to be able to sleep knowing that it's at the house & I'm here in New Jersey". So to this day she asks when is the shipping date on anything I order from dead.net, so she doesn't make any vacation plans lest the plans interfere with a coveted GD release. She puts up with my madness & she allows me to obsess over this thing that she claims is "bigger" than the both of us. Needless to say the love I have for my wife is BIGGER than the whole world. WE LOVE EACH OTHER!!!!

Interesting and very likely insight mayor Marion.... Didn't think about the microphone problems that the wall of sound created.... Does anyone know when the last one was? If it was a clunker, that could have sealed its fate..... Vguy72.... Any chance you know when they played the last one?

2.23.74 version IS a bit of a "clunker"which was the final version until the breakout on 12.6.92 7.2.95 was the final one... Deercreek 7.20.94 is a groovy version, even with its lil vocal flub... that whole show is killer, dig that setlist!! this was a tune Vince shined on... ♤ note: predicted 10.1.94 would get released... ...just never thought it'd happen so soon after!!!

....sorry brokedown, ace333 beat me to it. I did catch the Arizona return and my final show at Shoreline had one....Vince really did pretty well on that tune. Everyone gives him a bad rap, including myself. We even shared the same name for dangs sake! But his vox were pretty good imo. My legs gave out and I had to sit down when they broke it out for the first time in 19 years. My legs also gave out at the Forum in '89 when when broke out Monkey & The Engineer....etched in my mind for eternity (the noun, not the song, although that went places too). Holy Shit! Are we beginning to tread on '90's ground? Careful! Thin ice ahead.... ...and to the poster who listed the song count for the 30 Trips Box, thank you. I was gonna do it myself soon, but you saved me the trouble. I raise my almost empty glass to you good sir. Time for a refill....imperial stout in case anyone was wondering... ...edit again. Love the new font. Bold, like the best band in the land....

Is anybody else excited for this feel like a stranger from Maine in 84... There's something about early to mid 80s shows that make me feel relaxed and content, especially on hot rainy summer days, don't ask why it just does! On a side note, my girlfriend always says to me it all sounds the same it all sounds the same, well I'm looking forward to playing her these Prophets from this box, Prophet to me is my go to for proof of... Hey look this doesn't sound the same does it?... Excited for the entire box, can't wait

....obviously, Mr. Moran, your girlfriend hasn't "got it" yet. I've witnessed a handful of people who "got it" right before my eyes. It's a beautiful thing to behold. When someone gets it, it's uphill from there. they want to get their eyes, ears and hands on all of it. Sometimes it's all at once, but careful, the Grateful Dead are like a fine wine. You may not like it on first taste, but pop that cork on a second bottle a few months, or years later, and it all becomes clear. I am looking forward to the '84 Maine gig, as well as all the other shows in this release. I look at it this way. Let's say the dead tome is a swimming pool, and the members are jumping in from an Olympic high dive board. They all go in. Bobby (kinda thin), T.C. (thinner), Mickey (average), Donna (hopefully in a two-piece from circa 1976, Swoon). Then Jerry (circa 1985. The Fat Knight Rises), and proceeds to grace us with an epic cannonball. That "dive", is this box. Somebody refill the pool!!! The rest of the band is shivering, and Phil's Heineken is getting warm! Lol....

Maine and the rest of New England are pretty well represented here. If you include New York & Jersey, I believe fully one third of the shows are from the Northeast. As someone mentioned earlier, no Philly? Oh well, fodder for future releases...

Weir'd LoadWeir Everywhere If The Jerry Don't Brent Ya Then The Bobby Phil More Bass,Lesh Philling(on of course a copy of a Lite beer label) ...stoner's block. I'll try and think of more. :) AHAHH! The Ringling Brother's Circus Drum w/ Dead skeleton and font that read-The Greatest Show On Earth! Oh yeah,and one that had a 50's style picture of a Vegas style guy on water-skis waving with one hand,with a picture of Bobby on the head that read-"At Least I'm Enjoying The Ride!" AH-HAH Again!-I had a t-shirt that read "Keep On Tolkien!" that was the classic Mr. Natural struttin',but it was Bilbo. :)

Good Time Blues ; Cumberland Blues After letting the seasoned vets take swings for the majority of the 1st set, Brent gets his call to the plate and delivers a mighty fine Good Time Blues

....the eighties rise! It wasn't all bad. But like I've said before, I'm not that picky. Flubbed lyrics or tones? That's part of the stew....can i have another bowl please?.... ..."Who is this band, and why do they keep following me?". I had one of those on my old Toyota pickup. Crashed it. Tried to peel it off, but it came off in flakes and strips. No, not Frosted or comic, just pieces....(tear forms)....from my eye, not the sticker. Oh well, you people get it. Don't you?...Yeah you do. Sleep well all....

I've seen a few comments across a few forums now about bonus disc or bonus content coming with the 30 trips box - does anyone have any confirmation? Although I've ordered this - it's a shame theyre not using the killer filler I used to get with my tape trades (i.e. songs to fill up the end of Set 1 on a C90 cassette from previous nights or whatever) - a great idea! They used this approach on the Beyond Description and Golden Road sets to great success..... Why not the same here - killer filler was all the rage in the tape trade days. Alternatively Dave I've got a killer idea for you - there's HEAPS of songs missing and not in this set (Unbroken Chain the obvious one - and a tonne of Brent songs (personal preference) - do a 4CD bonus pack of those songs A-Z across the 30 years......... And while we're at it - next box set how about Best of the Guests - a 6-8 CD set across the years of when guests joined and jammed - I'm think Steve Stills Black Queen, Santana 87, Ornette Coleman, Dylan, Babatunde Olatunji etc........

He's an awful hack, that's why. It's not his playing, it's his singing and keyboard sounds. For my part, I like his contributions to songs that he was around for in the studio (Feel Like a Stranger, Touch of Grey, Foolish Heart, etc), but he defines the word "travesty" when he's involved on anything from the 70s. I can't make it through versions of songs like Music Never Stopped or Cassidy or Jack Straw with those awful keyboard sounds and backing vocals, and why would I when I can pop in the same song featuring Donna and Keith? And he can't harmonize when he sings backup. Does he deliver once in awhile? Sure, I'll give him that, but he detracts more than he adds, and I personally feel the Grateful Dead would have been better off keeping Keith and Donna in the mix. At a minimum, he should not have been allowed to sing, and his keyboard sounds should have been micro-managed by someone without a tin ear. From Internet Archive Forum: "every time he opened his mouth to sing it set my teeth on edge" "Anything - absolutely anything - by Brent Mydland is utterly disposable and has me lunging for the skip button." "I can't think of a single Mydland song that I like - every one of them has me reaching for the skip button. They're just utterly banal. Can you imagine a Brent Mydland solo album full of this stuff? Doesn't bear thinking about..." "Mydland sounds like a BeeGee with a head cold (and as for that blasted tiny-tonk keyboard sound...)" "If an ashtray full of old cigarette butts could sing, I imagine it would sound like Brent Mydland."

I am not a great fan of the so-called Brent era, but many of my issues are not specifically to do with him. It is also worth taking note of what Garcia said about him 'It was heartbreaking when Brent died, because it seemed like such a waste. Here's this incredibly talented guy — he had a great natural melodic sense, and he was a great singer. And he could have gotten better, but he just didn't see it. He couldn't see what was good about what he was doing, and he couldn't see himself fitting in. And no amount of effort on our part could make him more comfortable.' Garcia says a lot more that is very touching and perceptive about Brent in the 1991 Rolling Stone interview. Worth a look, it might encourage a little more generosity.

I know the band had its great moments, shows and even tours in the 80s and 90s, but '84 was a pretty ugly jolt in terms of Garcia's decline - bloated, fogged in etc. It's been discussed here before, and many do not agree with me, but to be clamoring for more music from that particular year.... is weird.

that's a bit harsh, but i agree that the 70's songs sounded better in the 70's. i will say this about brent...i caught a "go ahead" show in new orleans in the late 80's (billy & brent plus some other players), where brent was the bandleader, and it was FANTASTIC something about being the man in the band brought out a side of him rarely seen with the dead. gone were the michael-mcdonald-warbling and the occasional histrionics, and in its place was well played rock/blues/R&B so take that for what its worth...

Ooowee, the Brent bashing has reached new lows overnight. My live experiences with the Dead spanned the Brent era. I am not a diehard advocate for Brent's tunes, although that Hey Pocky Way opener at Shoreline 87 blew me away. As a back-up singer, Brent took a few years to hit his stride, but I liked the smoky fills on a number of songs. Jerry loved singing back-up, but he sure needed help for a good stretch of the 80's. In terms of the playing and his "sounds", after he got away from the Schroeder toy piano sound and started working the B-3 with the Leslie, I thought it was outstanding. I liked the semi-soulful, pseudo Allman sound this brought to the mix. Hell, I even liked the cat scratch fills on Loser (haters may want to skip this on 10/21/83-it was incredible live and for me it has held up to multiple listenings). We are a funny bunch- grumbling about too many Lovelight raps from Pig, the off key caterwauling Donna on many tunes and the block chords that Keith resorted to at the end. I listen to it all- yes, I absolutely prefer the strongest eras and the best shows within each. I did not purchase either of the '90 boxes because I knew I wouldn't give them the time they deserve. I am not sure there is a need to tear anyone apart in these forums, whether a band member or current poster. We have the ability to simply move away from what we don't like and allow others their space to enjoy. Even within the world of licorice there are many different textures and tastes.

Ornette Coleman, free jazz sax legend and Dead collaborator died this morning. Remarkably courageous and powerful player... RIP, man.On the Brent front, I wasn't a fan when I was in my 20's. In fact, "I will take you home" was dubbed "I will take a piss" or "I will get a beer." Great chance to take a breather. Not until he died did I really begin to fully appreciate his contributions. Like Oxford, I am particularly thrilled by his use of the B3 and Leslie. He channeled more authentic blues energy than anyone in the band. Listen to some of those Walking Blues or Never Trust a Woman from 90 and check out his stunning organ and scat solos. The dude had chops. He rocked best to Pocky Way and Blow Away, IMO, not to mention Gimme Some Lovin and Hey Jude. Hell, now that I have two kids of my own, even I Will Take You Home has a place in my heart!

Anyone? Listening to "Shakedown Stream" from yesterday... doing 1986... the only year for this baby... Brent - he was my keyboard guy when I went to shows: 84-89. And I thought he was fine... Now, at 50+ -- and I can listen to so...... so.... much, that I would never have imagined back when I was a kid. So now, Keith and Donna are my faves.... But yes, Donna sometimes swallowed the mike (as an old friend use to say) and I am another one that is not a big fan of the Pig raps... oh well. But, I love the Beatles too, and I don't love everything... so my 2 cents Speaking of back in the day, any Talking Head fans on this board? I remember that a number of my Dead friends (as well as myself) where into them... in the 80s. Was watching Stop Making Sense last night on youtube... When I saw that movie in 1984, me and a couple other guys I was with were dozed, but my big take (or high-insight at the time, and it still holds) was rhythm and percussion, I was fascinated by it from the movie, and it still informs my acoustic guitar playing to this day! As well as Jer and Bobby -- Jerry had some pretty good rhythm chops too :)

Three of my favorite TH tunes are "No Compassion", "Warning Signs" & "Crosseyed and Painless". Got a better appreciation for Cities after I saw Phish cover it at Lemonwheel... When they added Bernie Worrell and that intensive persussion section, they definitely stepped up their game. Saw David Byrne at Avalon (Now HOB) probably 10 years ago and it was a good show... I could not resist, I created a playlist of what I had from the archive that's being released on 30 Trips. I'm listening to it in chronicle order and was pleasantly surprised by Pigpen doing "It's a man's man's man's world" channeling Janice without her dynamic range (of course). People are in for a treat!!! Almost want to stop listening so I will get totally blown away by the stuff I never heard... Come on Dave, unless you're redoing the seaside chats with less wind, release another chat!!! Or at least a sneakpeak at the box... EDIT: fixing bad grammar...

I thought he was ok the first few years, soundwise; though his songs were definitely late 70's "light rock" However, I cannot listen to his ad-libs on Little Red Rooster, just plain vulgar and ugly. On the other hand, Weir's songs after Terrapin got really clunky both lyrically and musically. It's hard to believe the same songwriting team that wrote a piece as melodic as Weather Report Suite(not to mention the whole Ace LP), came up with Feel Like a Stranger and Picasso Moon.
