    Songs and Failure
The two things that separate the Dead from other bands, IMHO, are the songs of Hunter/Garcia and thewillingness of the band to go together wherever their collective or individual inspiration led, even if it meant they sometimes got lost along the way. It was that willingness to fail on stage that freed them to achieve the transcendent moments.

Y'all are hitting the nail on the head with the jamband discussion. You're saying what I've been thinking -- that most of them are too quick to go for the easy groove without enough unpredictable exploration in the rhythm section. No one does it like the GOGD and that's a big part of it. The superior songs themselves are another vital ingredient. There are exceptions of course and your mileage will certainly vary. I'll take raggedy old space case Keith Godchaux over that Furthur virtuoso any day. Interestingly, there is a parallel discussion on classical music going on back at the Dave's #11 board (if you can find it). It also favors expression over technical "perfection".

Bands (Jam or Not)...it all starts with a song.
There are tons of bands/artists that stretch out songs and improvise on stage but they are never labeled as a Jam Band or heard on the Jam Band station or whatever... Why not? Who knows/who really cares? I think the main problem is that the bands that generally fall under the "Jam Band" Umbrella aren't the best at songwriting and place most of talents in the jam part...well, it shouldn't be a surprise that if you jam out a boring song, its still going to be boring. I say this but there are some "jam bands" I like but some really are just utterly boring, to me at least. Since I'm posting this post on Dead.net, I obviously think that Garcia/Hunter & Weir/Barlow are some of the best songwriters that ever lived. There were definitely songs that were built with heavy improvising being the main purpose but, for the most part, they were trying to write nice songs and the jams came later (I know some of this was already pointed out in previous post, but its correct). Playing In The Band, Dark Star, & Thats It For The Other One all started out as nice little songs, am I right? I don't really care if a band is considered a jam band or not or jams or not...if they write a good song, I'll listen to them and go to their shows.

If you don't like the tickets you have two very good options - return them for a full refund. Or (and this is the one most people will choose) attend the show and if you want a partial refund save your stubs so you can send them back and get that partial refund. I know the tickets were expensive - I too went for the expensive seats and may choose to ask for a partial refund when it's all over because I am not made out of money and getting some back would be nice. However, it never once entered my mind to not go :-) I hope you decide to join the fun and enjoy yourself with the rest of us. take care, connie

Since a full refund is offered and a partial after the shows there is absolutely no grounds for a law suit. You lost the lottery - we all did and what we have now are consolation prizes. No one is insisting on keeping your money for seats you did not want - you can get it all back. So no grounds for a law suit at all - contain that anger, it's messing with the anticipation.

Hi Guys-- For some reason, I had been under the impression that the parking lots opened at 1pm in Santa Clara, but just read/heard that it is actually 3pm. Can anyone confirm? Thanks

My advice is (and you can take it or leave it), is to show up at 1:00 and park your car at the front entrance (to whatever lot you have a pass for). If enough people show up and crowd the entrance... ...they WILL open it up and let people in. That's just my common sense speaking, but we all know that not much about FTW has been common or has made much sense. So there you have it... Officially, I don't know one way or another what the official time is for Saturday 6/27 (I had first heard it was 1:00, but personally I am taking the train in from SJ and not paying $60 to park for 1 day in a lot that vending is prohibited)

That is likely good advice. Not much about this process has made sense (ticket costs, parking costs, the fact that I'm driving to the shows from Seattle in my VW bus to relive the experience, rather than using the plane ticket I have). That being said, I don't want to be the one fool that didn't get the memo on when the parking lot opens and miss two hours of 'reliving.'

Santa Clara is not joking around! No fun is allowed!! Found this article....ENJOY? 49ers new stadium: No kegs, playing catch -- all the things you can't do By Mike Rosenbergmrosenberg@mercurynews.com POSTED: 03/25/2014 11:11:02 AM PDT106 COMMENTS| UPDATED: ABOUT A YEAR AGO When the San Francisco 49ers new Levi's Stadium opens in August, the increased seat prices are expected to draw a larger share of the "wine-and-cheese" crowd than at Candlestick Park. But any time 70,000 football fans and booze mix, there is bound to be a little trouble. So the Santa Clara Police Department has laid out a new set of laws, set to be passed by the City Council Tuesday night, for what 49ers fans can't do at the $1.3 billion stadium, which comes with its own jail and will be patrolled by more than 100 cops from around the Bay Area. (Tuesday night update: The City Council unanimously approved the rules, making them official. Police Chief Mike Sellers says his department can use leniency when enforcing some of the laws.) Most of the rules appear to be pretty standard -- but some might raise a few eyebrows. Generally, a cop can kick you out for doing any of these things, confiscate your banned items, and slap you with escalating fines that range from $100 to $500, but a few prohibited acts (like bringing in a gun) can carry a misdemeanor charge punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Study up before planning your first outing. The following acts are prohibited for fans inside and outside the stadium No throwing objects -- liquid or solid, including footballs -- or causing anything to "become airborne" No exploding anything -- including smoke bombs, stink bombs, or anything "repugnant or disgusting to the eyes or sense of smell" Advertisement No birds, fish, reptiles or animals, except guide dogs No urinating or defecating anywhere except the bathroom The following acts are prohibited for fans inside the stadium No bringing weapons -- including guns, knives, Tasers, "impact weapons" or "chemical agents," unless you're a cop No running on the field, going into the players locker rooms or entering any other prohibited areas unless you have a pass to be there -- and yes, that includes pre- and post-game times No bringing in booze -- even in a flask No going inside the stadium -- even for impromptu flag football games -- when no events are going on No "disruptive, unsafe, noisy, boisterous or profane" activity -- we're looking at you, Seahawks fans No buying an additional ticket to re-enter the stadium after you've been ejected No air horns, bugles, powered megaphones, drums or other noise-making devices unless stadium officials approve No smoking except in designated areas No sitting in a seat that's not yours No blocking the aisles The following acts are prohibited for fans in stadium parking lots and other areas just outside the stadium No "vehicle training," playing sports -- including football -- bicycling or skateboarding in the parking lots No tailgating in unauthorized areas; it's up to the parking lot owners to approve tailgating, and the team says tailgating will be allowed in more than half the lots No free parking No taking up more than one space in the parking lot; there are higher fees and special spaces for RVs and other huge vehicles No messing with the parking space next to yours No music or any noise that can be heard from more than 50 feet away No lingering in parking lots during specific events in which officials close the lots during the events No selling food, drinks or anything else unless you're an authorized business, and no seeking employment or begging for money No beer kegs. No glass containers unless it's for prescribed medication Contact Mike Rosenberg at 408-920-5705. Follow him at twitter.com/RosenbergMerc.

The FAQ's link on the main dead50.net website is removed, but still exists here: http://mlb.mlb.com/concert/dead50/ And this statement is still in there: "Will my local cable provider be carrying this concert on PPV? Yes, Fare Thee Well will be widely available through local cable providers, as well as DISH and DIRECTV." How about none of the above? But this info. has not been updated since May 1. "Hey Lucy! You got some 'splainin' to do..."

Sounds about right, I have been saying it all along that Shakedown will be more like pat-down in SC. I like these items the best: NO music! (it's a frikkin concert for God's sakes) NO seeking employment (God forbid someone would ask to work at Levi's) Remember these are football game rules, but still...

It's entering the security checkpoint before getting on the plane that's the problem. TSA are feds and the feds don't recognize the medical rights of any individual in an airport or getting on a plane. Just what I read...

Answer is no. Federal offense. Medical or not - it's against the law. I would never mess with the TSA. My two cents...

Why, with a contest, of course! The first person to correctly guess the opening song for the first set of the Santa Clara show on Saturday, 6/27 will receive a piece of original Grateful Dead artwork as a prize. It'll be something from one of the releases shown in the picture on the GD store's "Music" page. And, if one of the entries happens to be the opening song for the first set on Sunday, 6/28, the first correct entrant will receive a prize as well. Just not as good as the 6/27 prize! Read the Rulez before entering: 1) Only one entry per person, one song per entry. An individual's duplicate guesses will be ignored and only the first guess will count 2) Entrant must have a dead.net "joined" date of 6/21/2015 or sooner (to prevent guesses under more than one user name. I know how sneaky y'all can be!) 3) Guess must be a legit song from the Dead's repertoire - not an opening jam, "Happy Birthday," "Funiculi Funicula," etc. Nothing from Phish or Hornsby, either 4) Only guesses sent to me in a PM will be considered. Anything posted in a forum will be ignored. Oh, yeah...please keep the PMs short and sweet 5) Entries will be accepted from 6:00 PM Pacific time on Wednesday, 6/24 through 11:59 PM Pacific time on Friday, 6/26. Guesses submitted outside those parameters will be ignored 6) First person to guess correctly wins (determined by time and date of PM) Disclaimers: In the very unlikely event any setlist is leaked beforehand, or the opening song is somehow publicly announced before the entry deadline, contest will be considered null and void and there will be no winners. This contest is not affiliated in any way with dead.net, Rhino, Musictoday, MaryE, band members, the ghost of Pigpen, seagulls hovering above Lemieux, etc. Just little ol' me! Have fun at the shows and good luck!

Hey it's all your fault! You know we now only read the first line and the last line of anyone's post. The middle is just fiddle (or filler to some). Shouldn't have announced the contest until just before you are ready to take guesses... Here in the blogosphere we enter and exit on our own accord and guess the mess with the blessed. Ok I am just rambling, but you see my point? Well if you do maybe you can point it out back to me. My guess is..... (OK, I will wait until the appointed time) :-)

About time! Am in Texas. Mail order Chicago tickets arrived today via FedEx. All were for the $199 price point. Got sections 132, 219, and 226 for each of the 3 days. If anyone else is out there stressing about tix showing up for Chicago, I feel ya. Don't give up hope! p.s. Didn't Shapiro's note say that if you wanted a full refund you had to return your tickets by 6/22? I don't want to, but if I *did*, this would be impossible.

And they are still available on Ticket Master today even today, 6/23. I dutifully submitted my ticket request through the lottery and ended up with generally shitty seats behind the stage. I have several other friends that ended up with the same shitty seats behind the stage. So I wonder how all of us who got stuck with these obstructed view seats behind the stage should feel, having paid for these upfront, and then only to find floor seats available today. Why didn't they give us the floor tickets to begin with and save the shitty seats for the late comers? Once more the fans get screwed...

I think there are some of us who would really want to know the answer to that question and other related ones! I chose 2 best available and 2 for best up to the GA PIT price (Sat and Sun respectively). I (was fortunate to score and) ended up with 2 in sec. 310 and 2 no/obstructed view behind/side stage 131 (Sat and Sun). Definitely some strange ticket practices have gone on for these shows as well as Chicago. I would say that Shapiro (with all his good intent) has made many fumbles regarding the ticket debacles and fiascos. Pretty sad really. I think his concert promoting reputation is seriously in question considering all that has happened and is still happening for FTW. I am still going to both SC and Chicago and I am gonna have a really good time, but many have not been as lucky as me and that is really unfortunate. Feel bad for the promise of the "best seats in the house" for GDTS TOO tix and having many deadheads not getting very good seats for their money.
