    hello all
ugh accidentally deleted my post, frustrating, although i did just now realize i forgot a few things, time to recreate. I got on da bus a couple months ago, however many of you dont know me as i havent been active (although i intend to change that) anyways im a young'n at only 16, and i like to my consider myself among the net generation of, if we may even call ourselves, deadheads. I was lucky enough to see the dead on the fourth, something i thought id never do, and had the time of my life, being around the best group of people imaginable, in the middle of a culture id only seen in daydreams and documentaries. Each day I grow to love the dead more and more, the moment it became more than music for me was at the concert, I learned then what the grateful dead really was, i was giddy before the show in anticipation of the feeling so many have attempted to describe and it didnt disappoint. I understood why people so often call it a family, and i had a wonderful time at the family reunion. I recently discovered a website some of you may have heard of but if not i highly recommend giving it a look: https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead since finding it I've set a goal (conditions permitting) to listen to a concert a day. About half of teachers nowadays allow students to keep a single earbud in and listen to music during class, I find it makes school much more bearable, but also it makes my goal possible, in fact i listened to a concert today. I was wondering if any of you were planning on going to the dead & company show with john mayor, and what you thought about it. Also what you guys think about the term deadhead, how do you define it? Is the title only for hardcore fans? how hardcore? would a casual listener be wrong to call themselves a deadhead? cant wait to get to know you all better, ive never met a deadhead i havent liked :)

Thank you T...... Nice choices....but....why? The why is the key to this exercise......we all love certain music...what is it in our souls that makes us choose the Yes Album over Fragile or Tales or Relayer or Close to the Edge.....or Tormato for chrissakes... That's just an example....for me it's where I was when I heard a certain album, or more importantly....who I was with....that changed my musical life forever.....memories and experiences embed certain music more deeply in our brains than others....it's not just the music, it's the memories and feelings music brings.... Just think on it....on a deep meditative level you will know.... Gonna take some time to think mine out, want it to be just exactly perfect ;-)

Now we are talking, brother.....thanks to my sons classical training, I am familiar with most all referenced....but those Northern Alabama gems from a wunderkind have eluded me..... Yes, it's about cleansing the minds palate so to speak.....and being open to anything..... Oscar Peterson's West Side Story or Sonny Rollins Way Out West need a spin..... Hell, Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman Song X.....heard it when it first came out and shunned it, recently gave it another listen, after 30 years and now I get it! And yes George, 5..... Genre doesn't matter......

Tall order, to pick five albums... I liked Tony's selections, and would second a couple of his picks...but only 5? I'd have to get a mix of classical, rock, blues, folk, bluegrass, and then maybe one I haven't heard yet. I've always had a hankering for some of the classical orchestrations, as my youth/adolescence, from the age of 12 to 18, had music and "the band" as its center. Those six years were spent playing numerous symphonies and concertos, which will always be embedded in my mind. Our little Jr. High School and then High School band ended up winning first place at the state every year, and culminated in first place at the southeast regional level as a senior. We were too broke to take it any further. Granted, this was Alabama, but it was North Alabama, where all the intelligent 'bama citizens lived. Actually had my first solo efforts put on vinyl at the ripe old age of 15 or so, as a proud member of the Whitesburg Jr. High Concert Band. Try giving Antonin Dvorak's "Finale to the New World" Symphony a listen...or if you are brave, the whole Symphony No. 9 (New World). And maybe "Finlandia" by Sibelius...that one has some cool riffs in it too. Any European Orchestra, or Russian Symphony, would do justice to the two pieces...and youtube has quite the variety. The above are mentioned because, as Rich said, "I want to know what magic I've been missing out on....life is short and I remain on a musical mission....and I need your help...." I pick New World for its cleansing of the mind thru soaring violins, its ability to keep your heart beating at a rapid pace with the powerful brass backed by perfectly pleasing percussion. The music of my adolescence is forever imprinted in my soul...and it started there... By the way, if you are giving advice to your kids or grandkids, and they wonder, "What will make me popular with the chicks (or boys)", you might pass on telling them to learn the clarinet....just sayin... Cheers and thanks for asking Rich. Next week I'll pick an album from my 20's to bring things more current. ps...if you come across "Clarinet Escapades" anywhere on the net, as performed by said Jr. High band, listen very very closely...

I've been at this a long time and have come to realize that our common bond may be the Dead, at least on a superficial level. I believe our camaraderie and affinity goes much deeper. it is the eclectic universal love of music, of all types. the acceptance of each other's tastes and the therapeutic value that music brings to our lives.....some of us are lyric freaks....some melody, some rhythm. Some just can't define it....and that's ok.... Since March, when this group jelled thanks to the efforts of a Mr.Tony Fonts (applause) there are times randomly during an average day that I marvel at what we were, what we are and what we will become.... The one burning question I had from day one and still have is the following... for those of you that still read this drivel...and thank you for that.... If you were stranded on a desert island, what 5 recordings would you bring along, if that is all you would have until your eternal dirt nap. To be fair, let's exclude greatest hits albums, compilations and bootlegs.....limit it to commercial studio and live recordings...my main reason for asking, is I want to know what magic I've been missing out on....life is short and I remain on a musical mission....and I need your help. I don't expect a quick response, as I have just begun to think about this myself....and my OCD at times, won't let me commit.... We don't need lyrics here, just albums....in no particular order....5 each....and most importantly why you chose them....I don't care, but you should....you don't need to post the reasons, but they should resonate with your selections..... Thanks for your time and consideration.... If you agree to participate, respond with the title Desert Island Selection...to keep things simple...and organized..... Maybe Tony can do a spreadsheet ;-) Let there be songs to fill the air....

Very nice choices.... My hope is we all end up on that Island together, and if we each bring 5.... Minus the duplicates....we will be in rock and roll heaven.... but why Al? Astral Weeks over Moondance, Tupelo Honey....something in that music grabbed you....what was it? A song, a melody, a lyric, a memory? Think on this, it's the most important part of the game...not for me but you.... Thanks for playing....I will compile and distribute so we all, those of us who are still around, can say hey, I don't know that one....better give it a listen.....

If you go down to the woods todayYou're sure of a big surprise If you go down to the woods today You better go in disguise For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain because Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic Every teddy bear who's been good Is sure of a treat today There's lots of marvelous things to eat And wonderful games to play Beneath the trees, where nobody sees They'll hide and seek as long as they please 'Cause that's the way the teddy bears have their picnic Picnic time for teddy bears The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today Watch them, catch them unawares And see them picnic on their holiday See them gaily gad about They love, to play and shout, they never have any cares At six o'clock their mommies and daddies Will take them home to bed Because they're tired little teddy bears If you go down in the woods today You better not go alone It's lovely down in the woods today But safer to stay at home For every bear that ever there was Will gather there together because Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic

Summer's here, I'm for that. Got my rubber sandals, got my straw hat.Got my cold beer, I'm just glad that I'm here. Summer's here, that suits me fine. It may rain today but I don't mind. It's my favorite time of the year and I'm glad that I'm here. Old man wintertime, he goes so slow. It's ten degrees below, you know. You can take your ice and snow and let my balmy breezes blow. Yeah, the water's cold but I've been in. Baby, lose the laundry and jump on in. I mean all God's children got skin and it's summer again. Old man wintertime, he goes so slow. The Northern lights visible here tonight....in da Buff.... The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you The northern lights are in my eyes They guide me back to you Desination outward bound I turn to see the northern lights behind the wing Horizons seem to beckon me Learned how to cry too young So now I live to sing The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you Horizons seem to beckon me Learned how to cry too young So now I live to sing Though it's hard away from you Travelling roads and just passing through It's not for money and it's not for fame I just can't explain, sometimes it's lonely Marking the space between the days Early hours pass away I sing to you of northern lights I sing for you of northern nights Past or future, here or there Shelter comes in words from you, so talk to me I hear your voice, it comforts me In morning dreams I take your hand You walk with me The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you Peace enfolds the still night air Home again I look for you and find you there Desintation homeward now Take the easy way, bring me down Making the hard way now I see Hard to be really free, I'm missing you near me Marking the space between the days Early hours pass away I sing to you of northern lights I sing for you of northern nights The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you The northern nights are in my eyes They guide me back to you

good morning to you all , just wanting to say I awoke this morning think where has the time gone. When I first heard of ftw I had to go some way some how. I fretted that I would not get tickets I sat and waited for an email but none came . My friend got one and I still had not. Late before bed I check for one last time , nothing , disappointed I laid in bed. At 5 am I checked again and there it was the miracle .I found a bus to ride with a bunch of merry pranksters drinking coffee , herding cats , polishing rails , and singing songs .We had nothing to eat but the talk of pie , cookies , and deep dish pizza . It been fun on this bus but I been informed we need to park it for a couple days refuel , and stretch are legs . Then on to chitown , may each of you enjoy the stop over , dance till you drop , and smile to your face hurts .Don't worry we will get this bus back on the road and in to town if the creek don't rise and gob is willing . Our driver is the best , and when he busy we have many capable pranksters on board to take the wheel and keep on trucking

I'm sittin alone, Saturday night, watching the Late Late Show A bottle of wine, some cigarettes, I got no place to go Well, I saw your other man today, he was wearing my brand new shoes And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too Well, I met my old friend Bob today from up in Bowling Green He had the prettiest little gal that I'd ever seen But I couldn't hide my tears at all 'cause she looked just like you And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too Now everybody tells me there's other ways to get high They don't seem to understand, I'm too far gone to try Now these lonely memories, they're all I can't lose And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too Well, my dog died just yesterday and left me all alone The finance company dropped by today and repossessed my home That's just a drop in the bucket compared to losing you And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too Got the down to seeds and stems again blues

Bob teaches us all we need to know about ourselves..."the simplest way to put it is, I have problems..." That whole movie is everything. I'm going to put my headphones on and watch it from the back here, is that okay? It's a bed coffee kind of morning anyway. One of my mothers went on a trek in Nepal and every morning the sherpas would bring her Bed Tea. BED TEA! Is that not the best? I tried to be good and was a tea-in-the-morning kind of gal for a lot of years. I will be again sometime, when the first outside-task of the day is working in the garden... until then, java in my cup! I like the feeling back here anyhow. Holly at the wheel. Sarge keeping an eye out for bumps. Everyone else singing, mumbling, or snoring away. Perfect way to step into the day. Bed Coffee.

Early one mornin' while makin' the rounds I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down I went right home and I went to bed I stuck that lovin' .44 beneath my head Got up next mornin' and I grabbed that gun Took a shot of cocaine and away I run Made a good run but I run too slow They overtook me down in Juarez, Mexico Late in the hot joints takin' the pills In walked the sheriff from Jericho Hill He said Willy Lee your name is not Jack Brown You're the dirty heck that shot your woman down Said yes, oh yes my name is Willy Lee If you've got a warrant just a-read it to me Shot her down because she made me slow I thought I was her daddy but she had five more When I was arrested I was dressed in black They put me on a train and they took me back Had no friend for to go my bail They slapped my dried up carcass in that county jail Early next mornin' bout a half past nine I spied the sheriff coming down the line Up then he coughed as he cleared his throat He said, "Come on you dirty heck into that district court" Into the courtroom my trial began Where I was handled by twelve honest men Just before the jury started out I saw that little judge commence to look about In about five minutes in walked the man Holding the verdict in his right hand The verdict read in the first degree I hollered, "Lawdy Lawdy, have mercy on me" The judge he smiled as he picked up his pen 99 years in the Folsom pen 99 years underneath that ground I can't forget the day I shot that bad bitch down Come on you've gotta listen unto me Lay off that whiskey and let that cocaine be

Be on my side,I'll be on your side, baby There is no reason for you to hide It's so hard for me staying here all alone When you could be taking me for a ride. Yeah, she could drag me over the rainbow, send me away Down by the river I shot my baby Down by the river, Dead, oh, shot her dead. You take my hand, I'll take your hand Together we may get away This much madness is too much sorrow It's impossible to make it today. Yeah, she could drag me over the rainbow, send me away Down by the river I shot my baby Down by the river, Dead, oh, shot her dead. Be on my side, I'll be on your side, baby There is no reason for you to hide It's so hard for me staying here all alone When you could be taking me for a ride. Yeah, she could drag me over the rainbow, send me away Down by the river I shot my baby Down by the river, Dead, oh, shot her dead.

Well, your CD collection looks shiny and costly. How much did you pay for your bad Moto Guzi? And how much did you spend on your black leather jacket? Is it you or your parents in this income tax bracket? Now tickets to concerts and drinking at clubs, Sometimes for music that you haven't even heard of. And how much did you pay for your rock'n'roll t-shirt That proves you were there, That you heard of them first? How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle? How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle? How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle? Ah, tell me. How much did you pay for the chunk of his guitar, The one he ruthlessly smashed at the end of the show? And how much will he pay for a brand new guitar, One which he'll ruthlessly smash at the end of another show? And how long will the workers keep building him new ones? As long as their soda cans are red, white, and blue ones. And how long will the workers keep building him new ones? As long as their soda cans are red, white, and blue ones. Aging black leather and hospital bills, Tattoo removal and dozens of pills. Your liver pays dearly now for youthful magic moments, But rock on completely with some brand new components. How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle? How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle? How do you afford your rock'n'roll lifestyle? Excess ain't rebellion. You're drinking what they're selling. Your self-destruction doesn't hurt them. Your chaos won't convert them. They're so happy to rebuild it. You'll never really kill it. Yeah, excess ain't rebellion. You're drinking what they're selling. Excess ain't rebellion. You're drinking, You're drinking, You're drinking what they're selling.
