    Dave's Picks Volume 8
I was late to the Dave's Picks game, and had to buy everything from the scoundrels on eBay. In the process, I ended up with two copies of Dave's Picks 6 & 10. I did not get a copy of Volume 8 however, and am looking to trade. If anyone is interested, please email me tsherman2112@gmail.com.

Mole, Flash, Mick and I drove furiously up I-55 from LaPlace, LA in time to catch the first notes of Mississippi 1/2 Step. Lazy > Supp was a terrific set closer. 2nd set really was memorable, except Donna was absent after the drum sequence. We had to bolt after Around to get back to our midnight shift on the Big River. LMA has a great soundboard of the 1st set: will a 2nd set board emerge? >> 2 years later, we're also missing good recordings of the 2 shows at the Saenger in New Orleans.

Karma is a babe from Fennario - or maybe Carlisle-Mayor K. All of the goodwill we sent to you came back threefold. After the late nights fraught with ticket envy and ticketmaster bashing, we are almost out on the Golden Road. The love of my life and I have tickets on hand for 7/5, we check in Friday night, and we might even go to the Saturday show too if tickets are reasonable on the lot. I will expose her to Billy and Mike for the first time......I haven't seen either of them since Montage Mountain 1998. I will not be wearing my 1989 summer tour Batman steal your face t shirt as planned....26 years and 36 pounds have made it not decent for the public !!! We probably all faced similar dilemmas while packing. Sh*t, I don't even recall bringing much with me when I was on the road in 88 and 89. Was I uncivilized? No, just a Deadhead. I'm so excited to see old friends, the Shakedown, new friends, and the seven guys on stage.

One more contest! Someone leaked the setlists before the Santa Clara shows, so I guess we'll have to come up with something different this time in case that person does the same for Chicago. Rumors are swirling about who might make a guest appearance this weekend, so we're going to have a 2-part contest. The first person to correctly guess how many guests will join the boys onstage during the course of the 3 shows will receive a piece of original Grateful Dead artwork as a prize. Additionally, the first person to correctly guess the name of the first guest appearing onstage will also win a prize. IMPORTANT: Read the Rulez before entering! 1) Only one entry per person, one number and name per entry. An individual's duplicate guesses will be ignored and only the first guess will count 2) Yes, "zero" is a number, and "nobody" is a name 3) Entrant must have a dead.net "joined" date of 6/30/2015 or sooner (to prevent guesses under more than one user name. I know how sneaky y'all can be!) 4) A "guest" is someone not in the announced configuration of the band who appears onstage and sings and/or plays an instrument (yes, a cowbell is an instrument - damn straight!). Guest must be a legitimate, recognizable musician/singer. Guys in the crew banging on stuff behind Billy and Mickey don't count. Politicians/promoters/announcers don't count. 5) Multiple appearances by a guest on a single day counts as ONE. Appearances by a particular guest on 2 or 3 days counts as TWO or THREE, respectively. For example, if Taylor Swift joins the fellas on Friday and Sunday, that counts as 2. If Kenny G is there Friday, Saturday and Sunday, that counts as 3, in which case I might beg the good Lord to call me home on the spot! 6) Only guesses sent to me in a PM will be considered. Anything posted in a forum will be ignored. Oh, yeah...please keep the PMs short and sweet 7) Entries will be accepted from 5:00 PM Pacific time on Thursday, 7/2 through 3 PM Pacific time on Friday, 7/3. Guesses submitted outside those parameters will be ignored 8) First person to guess correctly wins (determined by order of appearance in my inbox) 9) Past winners of prizes will sit this one out so someone new can share the goodies. Those folks are JimJohn, mbarilla, Syracuse78 and Strider88. Thanks for understanding, guys. 10) Yes, OF COURSE the rainbow was real. Sheesh! Disclaimers: Contest is null and void if guests are announced prior to 3 PM Pacific time on 7/3. This contest is not affiliated in any way with dead.net, Rhino, Musictoday, MaryE, band members, the ghost of Pigpen, seagulls hovering above Lemieux, etc. Just little ol' me! Have fun at the shows and good luck!

This is the first installment of a journey that will take 3 hip ladies to Chicago from Boston; I'd like you to meet Althea, Bertha & Cassidy 3 gals who met each other at MSG 1990, they've been through the good times as well as the bad times, through marriages, 1 divorce & all 3 have 2 kids each, they share a strong connection in life & a stronger tie for there love of music, especially the Grateful Dead. It is 7:35 PM EDT, they made plans to meet at the site of the venerable Boston Garden at 5PM EDT, the vehicle they will be sharing the driving will be an ultra cool 1957 Willys pickup 4X4 just like the one Sugar Magnolia drove. As they go thru various states they will encounter MANY people along the way, in fact just before they began the journey the met a captain, & strange one at that asking if they'd like to out on the harbor in his Ship of Fools they said no, as the Race Is On to Chicago he asked for what they all replied simultaneously, FARE THEE WELL he said oh the one with Annabelle, they replied again simultaneously, that's the one!!!!! So now they're On The Road heading down I-95 with 9/26/91 in the tape deck, they want to stop in NYC, just to get in a "New York" state of mind before they head to the Windy City. Tomorrow I will tell you more as I have a story to tell, the story ends with the girls arriving in Chicago on Friday BEFORE show time, until then STAY DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a wonderful weekend! I had a grate time with my old friends, and don’t even mind anymore that I missed the rainbow Dark Star. I’ve lucked into my share of “once only” shows, somebody else got it this time. Sunday night wasn’t exactly a bummer ;-) Bob actually got 65,000 people to be Dead quiet for several seconds — I think that shows a hell of a lot of respect and affection for those who couldn’t be there, though I’m not so sure some of them weren’t. The Brokedown Palace was heartbreaking, sung together without “singing along”. If it were 19-eighty-something I might be rolling East now, the old VW staying cool while I stayed uptight about my California license plates, which I always figured were about like having a vanity plate that read “Hippie”. I was never stopped, but if I had been I was prepared. Word to the wise. My spirit travels with you, as the Grateful Dead assemble one last time, in the place where we ended 20 years ago but did not end. Sin Funcisco will be watching from 2000 miles away, right there beside you. Perhaps we’ll hear or see something of Hunter or Donna in Chicago. Blessed be. Here is a story from 1972: A TRUE GARCIA TALE: We’re outside of Winterland after a Grateful Dead show. The five of us are standing on the sidewalk trying to get a little un-disorientated when a door opens in the side of the building and the Dead walk out. Bill and Pigpen are first; someone yells out “great show,Pig”; he says thanks. I notice the Smiling Service filling station patch on the shoulder of his jacket and crack a grin. Jerry’s right behind him, close enough to touch. He looks noticeably smaller in person than on stage. I badly want to say something to him, my mouth is open but no words come out. Garcia’s walking past me, he’s gone, it’s too late. Then words are spoken — a very heartfelt “Hey…thank you, man!” emerges dryly from my throat. Jerry turns on his heel, looks me dead in the eye, and says: “No…thank you!”. Yeah, I was still tripping, but four other people later confirmed what he said. And we all agreed on what he meant.

Major bummer I think my heart just got pulled from chest! A friend called last week with an extra 3 day ticket for Chicago. This was after all ticket attempts had failed. Then it got taken back. My car was already packed and I've got my best greenery, wax and paper! I was gonna wing it but the prospect of spending cash and potentially being left in Chicago outside the shows was a heartbreaker. But that's not the PSA. A friend of a friend who was taking the ticket initially but was going through serious hard drug problems checked out of detox yesterday morning against the recommendations of family and friends and demanded the ticket. So now someone whose family and friend's don't want them there for serious health and safety concerns will be travelling to Chicago. I'm getting the impression this is going to be a recurring story this weekend with many people. Everyone please keep an eye out on your neighbour and watch out for each other. There will be a lot of partying this weekend and some people will be reckless. Let's make it a party but stay safe and keep the shit show out of the newspapers!

First show since '87 Dylan Dead 4th of July Hundred or so east coast shows before that. First time I'm flying to show, staying in a hotel for show, carrying a cell phone to a show. It's all a little surreal. Will miss Jer more than a little. Let Phil sing Box or Rain, hope Bobby doesn't spit on u too much, grab a smoke during Rooster, hope the cops are cool, Iko or Althea would make me happy, Sugaree to open, we'll all be ok, not sure I can handle Peggy O - too many memories. Tease us a Stephen. So many nights wondering were is this jam headed.

Excellent weather forecast for Chicago. Wonderful as we weren't sure what to expect as it was a rainy June for the Great Lakes region. Sorry to hear your pass fell through Direwulf and especially the circumstances with the friend of your friend. My sincere hope is for a positive environment all weekend. I saw that they pushed back the outdoor lots opening to 3 p.m., but are prepared to open earlier if needed-- I think it will be needed. I have one friend making the trek without a ticket for the Friday night gig-- hope to find one. I don't think there will be many cover songs-- other than traditional GD arranged tunes, such as NFA, GDTRFB, etc... The only covers last weekend fall into that category, with Lovelight, Morning Dew, Viola Lee. I wish Bobby would do a Pigpen rap just once during Lovelight-- "Get yo' hands out of your pockets..." I am sure there will be songs repeated from SC, but plenty of nuggets left unmined-- China/Rider, Scarlet/Fire, Help/Slipknot/Franklin's, Weather Report, Playin', Terrapin. And those are just second set tunes! Can't wait-- in 24 hours I will be heading down to the show.

I bought tix to Sunday's show at the movie theatre. I never was smart enough to go see the band live so at least I will get this experience to enjoy. It's something! The lady at the box office said there haven't been many tix sold so we can stretch out and relax. Hope everyone that goes in the flesh has a superb time

Thought I'd re-post this one... If you're still on the road and looking for a place to stop along the way (for a few or overnight), a place to pitch a tent, park a bus, an RV or a car while en route to Chicago (we're out in the country, 140 miles northwest of the city). The gate is open; we don't want anything in return (AKA - free). All we ask is that anyone stopping/staying treat the place with respect. PM for location information J and T

A bit cool today, but better than yesterday and yes the weekend looks beautiful, no rain (Only boxes) but remember, Solider Field is practically on Lake Michigan. As for tickets, well if you were planning to come, and still don't have any, my niece said there were PLENTY in all the lots, some free, all at or below face. Chicago is a great town, VERY welcoming of heads, and bring your bathing suit, 18th Street beach is walking distance from all the lots. Let's show Chicago, and Chicago police department, we are THE best fans of any event downtown!!

Well the ladies made it to the Big Apple at approximately 4AM EDT quite tired however very excited, they could've stayed at some posh hotel in Manhattan however they chose to stay at some Brokedown Palace on the Lower East Side called The Mars Hotel East to them it was the right place to be, they checked in & met the inn keeper who called himself Big Boss Man, now in the lobby before the ladies went upstairs to catch some much needed shut eye they meet 3 wise men, August West, Casey Jones, & Jack A Roe, all 3 of these guys enjoyed women, wine & song but now they just like wine, whiskey & rye, now the gals told them "we can't help you at this late hour" however they gave them a bottle of Ripple to share then one of them I believe it was August West said "I like my Pearly Baker best" so he didn't partake in the Ripple drinking he went back down to the docks of the city. When they finally got to there room which by the way is Room #13 right outside the room was a couple, Reuben & Cherise now these 2 were barely 20, Althea asked what can we do to help you Cherise asked, "can we get a dime for cup of coffee"? Now Cassidy said a dime won't get you a stick of gum in this day & age however the crazy part is Bertha saw this young lady open her purse & saw she had Money Money on her the girl then proceeded to say that we're trying to get to Terrapin Station at Shakedown Street, needless to say Help ISN'T on the way. Now they're in room 13 hoping to catch some much needed sleep before they head off for the Windy City. Part 3 tomorrow it's a GRATE journey stay tuned & as always STAY DEAD!!!!!!!

Hello to all my brothers and sisters out there, welcome to the Windy City. Gonna be a big weekend - Be Kind! We'll see you all there. BTW - if you are caught with up to 14g, the cops have the CHOICE of giving you a ticket or arresting you. Be cool and you'll only get a ticket. They were all very friendly in the 90's and the atmosphere is a lot looser now, it's not the Chicago of the 60's lol

The ladies are in the City of Wind the Weather Report stated that the weather is going to be almost exactly perfect, & it is beautiful indeed, now I'd like to say that the gals journey was a long strange trip however it was a Sentimental Journey fueled by memories of the olden days when being a Deadhead was a way of life, once arriving in Chicago all 3 discovered that parking was almost near impossible so they parked about 10 blocks away from the venue & proceeded to walk where they encountered many people, some with tickets, some without, some searching for a miracle & some who were there just to see what strange circus has come to town. Chi Town is buzzing with the anticipation of our nations birthday as well as hosting the world's GRATEST carnival, for The Grateful Dead has come to town. The very first thing they encounter is the GD Merch bus chock full of 50th Anniversary trinkets, sort of like a souvenir shop on wheels, after spending time & a rather large sum of Money Money the ladies head out to another Shakedown Street which seem to be all over the place instead of shopping they head to a park where they encounter a Brown Eyed Woman who is looking for reds, vitamin C & cocaine they say they do not know anyone who is holding anything, they proceed to tell her that maybe she should stop by the Wharf Rat tent & perhaps listen to what's being said instead of acting on an ugly, unbreakable chain of destruction, after leaving her they meet a young man named Tennessee Jed who's singing the Cumberland Blues because he can't find his Lindy Lou & she has the Roses for Scarlet Begonia. Althea is sitting on a park bench talking to Black Peter who with Jack Straw is grooving to the sounds of 8/4/76 on an old boom box, meanwhile, Bertha & Cassidy are grooving to a story being told by a Lost Sailor & his sidekick Saint of Circumstance about how in the olden days this scene took place in every city the good ole Grateful Dead played in, they listen to the Birdsong coming from the trees but alas the ladies must depart as the make there way to the "Field of Dreams". There are Days Between when the Deal just doesn't go down Althea wanted this hand made GD 50th tapestry but the artist said to her "sorry NOT FOR SALE" so she said Comes A Time when I got to keep on movin on, now they're really Truckin to Soldier Field to listen to the Greatest Story Ever Told they just encountered Dear Mr. Fantasy who is Waving That Flag while listening to US Blues. Well they're finally here singing songs of praise to let the Good Times Roll they talk to the Estimated Prophet who tells them they open with Help>Slip>Frank & encore with Attics, well He's Gone time to head in & encounter many kind people as we are all our own to live, love & listen to the WORLD'S greatest band, The Grateful Dead. And may EVERYONE who is attending OR not attending have a GRATE time this July 4th weekend I will post my dream setlist on Sunday BEFORE show time. HAPPY 50th Anniversary GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR A REAL GOOD TIME Peace

Embarrassed to say I'm not sure but was Bobby playing a Fender Strat or Telecaster for the first Chi show? I also noticed he played an autographed guitar for a tune or two in the second SC show, I'm assuming that was for a charity auction or something. Surprised he didn't have his 'holy grail' Gibson for this show.

WOW!That Scarlet>Fire was ripping roaring! I think Trey is finally getting his footing, but I wish i could hear more of Bruce, both on piano and vocals. Never was a huge Chemitti fan, but last night he proved more than his value as he did a lot with Brent's old organ. So, Pigpen or Brent jams in the mix? And yes, I would say Saturday night opener, or closer, or second set opener, with a U.S. Blues encore.
