We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Let there be songs to fill the air!

Thanks for that link @frankparry. Can't say I'm impressed with the design of the 4-CD box, but I'll bet the 80-disc box will be awesome. And what a monster it'll have to be. Just look at 80 CD's in your collection and see how much space they take up! I'm betting there will be a cardboard slipcase for each show. Or maybe it'll be in the style of a book. It looks like that's what they went for with the 4-disc set. If that's the case, it may be hard for folks to sell off single shows as we've seen on this board and on eBay. Besides which, I think the idea of breaking up the box defeats the vision that Dave had: i.e. taking in the 30-year journey that was the life of the Grateful Dead. So if you're someone who loves the 70's Dead, this may be an opportunity to have some later era music in your collection. And if you're an 80's/90's lover, then this is the chance to go back a bit further. My story is this: I started listening to the Grateful Dead with the album "Without A Net," so Brent has always sounded great to me. I never did get to see Brent, though. I saw the Dead 4 times -- 3 in '91 and once in '93. I was at the 2 MSG shows before the 9/10/91 show in the box. Then I stopped listening for years. It wasn't until my son was born 3-1/2 years ago that I started listening again. Man, I was HOOKED! I tracked down every Road Trips and Bonus Disc over the next year, and then started in on the Dave's Picks and newer box sets as they came out. Despite my expanding collection, I was still pretty stuck in the late 80's and early 90's. But I slowly worked my way backwards. '77 and '74 offered ample rewards for my listening, but earlier than that was a little too much for me. Kinda raw at times. And Pigpen took some getting used to. So it took me a while to get into '72 and all that the European tour has going for it. Now I can dig it. On the other side of the Dead's career, I shied away from post '91 stuff. Without Hornsby, what magic did the band still have up their sleeves? Then I pulled out th '93 Cal Expo Road Trips this year. I've gotta tell you, it's good. Way better than I thought it should be. So when I first saw this box set, I thought, "Way too expensive," and "Too much stuff that I don't want." But the more I thought about it, the more excited I became to hear those shows from years I had shied away from - pre '72 and post '91. I think the box will be an amazing opportunity to experience the full scope of what the Grateful Dead's music was. Thanks for reading. Time being short

I came up with a rather new twist. Listening to an entire show sometimes just isn't possible, so what I've done is to select one disc from a set and create a mix up. Yesterday I started with some 73 and jumped to 90 then back to 72, etc. kinda works with the 50th concept. I have SO much Dead now, I might be able to only enjoy 1 complete show in a day and that would take a while to go thru all of it. So this approach is in play. I'm also rotating in terms of sets too. First sets and then Second.It gives me a broad palate to draw from and lots of years to combine into one big groove for the day. I've read were some folks wouldn't try this, but it's working in the summer heat so far! Enjoy yourselves!

There's some good insight into some of the music that influenced Jerry and some of the directions he wanted to explore or did not in the following March '78 JGB interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya2Vv1zcGmY It gives some background on the edgier, harder feel the music took on at that time. There's an interesting piece about new wave and punk that starts about 29 min in. Very interesting stuff.. if you had the same conversation say in '72 or '73, Its very likely names like Django Reinhardt, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis and the like might just pop up. At one point Garcia states, "I like Cheap Trick." A musical Omnivore he was.. 35 min in he speaks highly of the Who and Townsend but says its a drag to do the same show '4 years in a row. Change and reinvention is a part of the golden thread this tapestry is woven from. Anyway, more food for thought. The only thing constant in this world is change.

Unfortunately, when I think of Keith's later playing, I invariably think of the Cornell Fire. His blocky repetitive chords are just a sin, and almost ruin this amazing song for me. Give me his early stuff any day, the man was fantastic!

I never articulated this correctly, and I think you are right. Since we were talking about the "non-factor" issue (and I'd never actually noticed anything BAD before, like the 12/31/78 bad chord), I decided to check out a couple songs from the famous 5/8/77 gig. After all, we all know that show, right? I dialed up Estimated Prophet in the car, and listened for what Keith was doing. Now, granted, I'm cruising down the road in 93-degree Florida heat, so the AC is cranked to the max, but let me just say: during the first 3 minutes or so that I road-tested that song, I did not hear Keith...at all. I could hear everybody else: Phil, Jerry, Bobby, Mickey & Billy. I skipped ahead to Morning Dew, and I heard a little bit of tinkling piano during the first few minutes...nothing bad, but nothing remarkable. Sounded low in the mix, too...very low. Maybe they really did turn his volume down overall? No idea. For contrast, I listened to a Yes show from the same basic era, '78. Rick Wakeman on keyboards. Now, it's not a fair comparison, I know: different band, different style. But I'll tell you what: those keyboards were prominent, I mean PROMINENT, in the mix. All over the place. So maybe it wasn't just drugs, passivity, or whatnot. Maybe he really was mixed intentionally low by the latter years of the Godchauxs' tenure.

I always liked this show, but Keith is a non-factor and he really blows it toward the end of Good Lovin'-- when the rest of the band stops at one point, Keith hits a big chord. That is one of the worst obvious errors I have heard in all my GD listening, way worse than any vocal flubs they regularly made. Re: Beware Mr. Baker and the Clapton comment, in the movie they talk about Ginger's style a lot and that he was really a jazz drummer thrust into a rock and roll band. Clapton's comment, I think he was more appalled by the comparison to Bonham, you can hear him say, "no, no, Zep..." and then he catches himself before being caught on camera bashing LZ. Ginger could swing, hit 'em hard and provide some world beats, too. I like Keith Moon a lot and find his drumming amazing in his prime. This documentary gave me a better appreciation of Ginger Baker's talents-- in spite of the fact that he is absolutely insane.

Keith "going through Jerry's briefcase"???

Rdevil - Can you clarify what is meant by "Keith going through Jerry's briefcase may have been his biggest sin"??? Do you mean he was actually busted rifling through his stuff/stealing Jerry's stash, or was that just a euphemism for "he was doing the same, err…, recreational stuff as Jerry and it had a very negative effect"? I do recall a story from one book where someone had stolen Jerry's stash from his briefcase and he started VERY indiscreetly confronting people "Who took my bindle!" Maybe these stories are related (though probably not - made me think of it though…) I'm mildly uncomfortable that this is getting into unsavory gossip, but I'm hitting "send" anyway...

Keith vs Mickey

What an interesting take that I never thought about before, it's Mickey's fault ;) It does stand the basic logic test of jazz based piano players were considered part of the rhythm section and the addition of a 2nd drummer would leave less space for Keith in the mix, where as syths, cheesey keyboards and organ would occupy a different spot in a 2 drummer line up. things to listen for in the future. Billy's new book has also given me lots to listen for and highly recommended for his point of view from the drummers seat on the mood/drug consumption of the periods. Jerry seems to be one of the few junkies that could still play well far longer than most of the people around him and even though it became a problem, they let it continue as the money became everyone's drug of choice at the end. meanwhile Weather Report suite from 9/12/73 SBD just shuffled on and Keith is sounding great, too bad theres a bunch of horns soloing where Jerry should be playing and it sounds like a flock of waterfowl having an orgy.

Box set is not sold out yet, I was able to add one to my cart just now. Perhaps what you're seeing is the "Not Available" under the "Gift Box" item? Also, you won't be charged right away. I just checked my credit card and there is no charge on it from when I ordered several weeks ago.

No news ...

I think the DaP 15 release is being held until the FTW store sales die down (along with the FTW shows). Someone thought that the shows might be complementary to those in the box (like from the same run or tour). I would think not, as that would cut into box sales (or DaP sales), so my guess is that we will see something not related to the box. So let the guessing begin ...

I ordered the box the day after it was announced, yet I have yet to see it on my credit card statement. I received a confirmation email and number, and can even track it's progress (I know there's no progress but I checked as a test) anybody have any ideas?

Dave and company this box with all the shows from different years stands to be mother of all dead box sets. Now that this release is from different eras how about a box set of all the Roosevelt Stadium shows. Four years Six shows with a monster show from every year they played there. I can't think of any other place that the Dead played so well every year . I think the 8-1-73 show Jerry's 30th blows away 6-10-73. the 8-4-76 show is one of the best from 76.

Finally ordered this box set (again)

Several weeks ago, I placed an order for this "30 Trips Around The Sun" box set. Something of a financial difficulty came up, and I cancelled that 1st order. Much to my suprise, that bill was much lower than I thought and other money came in. So, on Thursday 16 July 2015, I ordered it again. I'm stoked for this one! I think the only show I'd substitute for what's in the box would be 8/1/73 Roosevelt Field in Jersey City, NJ for what is included - 11/14/73 San Diego (Sandy Eggo) CA, but that's just a hair. 1966 will suprise me because I have the "Birth of the Dead" 2 disc set from the "Golden Road" box set from 2001. The 1995 (2/21) selection is probably better than my choice of 3/19/95, the breakout of Unbroken Chain, a matrix recording of U.C. would be nice there. Other than that, everything offered in this box set, I would want and will enjoy.

The webmaster fixed it so we can't use the tried and true method of seeing if ### is available via adding it to the cart - 99 is the max number I could put in... If you were planning to use a credit card (vs debit), a charge will appear for a day or so, but you won't be charged till it ships. Or that's how it's worked in the past... So if you wanted to make sure you had one locked up but still on the fence, you could probably cancel up to a couple of weeks before Sept 18 without worry... Dave, now that you recuperated from the FTW vacation (I hoped you got to spend it as a deadhead and not as an employee) and released the SaP15 Seaside Chat, I have one question... Did you happen to cut another video at the same time as DaP15 giving us more details on this unbelievable BoxSet??? y the looks of what you've been and are going to listen to. Mines been somewhat manic. Beethoven for breakfast, followed by Zep's 1st, with set 2 from 7/16/72, Dillon Stadium, featuring that excellent NFA>GDTR>Bo Diddly with what sounds to me like Jerry & Bob sittin' in with the ABB. Oh, and forgot to mention I've been listening to 6/73 in the car - started with 6/22 a while back and presently on 6/26 with 6/30 in the hole. Finished Original Dixieland Jazz Band from this date 1918, and I'm presently grooving to Oscar Peterson playing Duke Ellington with Dizzie Reece "Comin' On" on deck. And I just know I'm gonna cap this day with a Studio One disc called Ska Fever! Go deh! See, so just a tad "off kilter". Right back at ya on Happy Friday and thanks for asking!

Don't let that deal go down.....

As much as I would like to purchase this set it's just not feasible for me at this time. If this set was around next year I would be in a better position to grab one. My wife has been going to school and student teaching all year. So two adults, three children, two dogs and two cats on one income, the budget is stretched pretty tight right now. The 11/10, 5/14, and 10/26 shows are birthday shows for my wife, son and brother. Which obviously has meaning for me. I'll probably try my luck picking up those shows on ebay when it gets released. The going rate seems to be $50 right now, which is ridiculous until you look around at what other Dead cds are selling for. From that perspective they seem pretty damn cheap. Ah well, it just doesn't seem to be in the cards for me at present. Cheers.

EDIT: Though I would change it to " of the things that reminds me..." since I also get that reminder from sunsets, the look of sheer joy on my wife's face when she runs the goats in from the field, the laughter in my daughter's eyes when she learns something new about the world... Wow, the Grateful Dead are in some good company.

I Wish I Had $700 That I Had Absolutely No Other Need For

Another collection for the corporate heads / drug kingpins. They keep releasing these great box sets that I just simply can't afford. I wish they'd allow you to purchase them individually as well. Quit making these shows only available to those who can spend $100's of dollars. It really comes off as elite-est. BTW, I say boo that Dave didn't select 10/5/94 from the Philly Spectrum for the '94 show. Gimme a break on that one!

Broke down and now more broke

Well I have not gotten many box sets over the years. Money tight and a wife who just doesn't understand made me miss some great box sets. Will I said not tho time and did it. Was not cheap but way cheaper then if I went to the July shows.The July shows reminded me how much the Dead make my life better. The Dead made me see that life is a wonderful thing. Music,dancing and joy the Dead give me. This box will give me so many days filled with joy it will be worth the price. Hell a coworker is going to Comic Con in Chicago and has spent more then a 1000 just for tickets and hotel, and air. So can't wait to get my set. So glad I did. I broke down, more broke but its ok. It is worth it.

So they should only offer things that everyone can afford? What can everyone afford? 100 dollars? 20 dollars? A buck forty-nine? Trust me, these shows will eventually be available for individual download. By the way, I'm no "corporate head" or "drug kingpin". I make less than 15 grand a year, and I came up with the dough, cuz it's that important to me. That said, I do feel for those who won't get to enjoy the whole enchilada this September! Here's hoping they all come into some money before this sells out!

I wanted to check the set lists for some of the shows in the box, but I found the 'SHOWS' heading is no longer there - can anyone explain?

Dave - go to the tab marked The Archives and then go to the bottom left of the page and there is a small heading under features called shows.

It's about money management.

We all knew for the 50th the box set was going to be REALLY BIG. I figured it'd end up costing more than the Europe '72 box and used that as a starting point. Figured I'd save $600 to be safe. Had a long time to squirrel away money here and there. I ended up with $680 and of course I underestimated it. I'm not a drug dealer (worse, I work for lawyers), or wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. It's about smart planning.

I sympathize with those on the outside; while I cannot know what you - or the many for whom similar financial constraints preclude purchase of 30 Trips - have in the way of collected releases, don't forget the Download Series and still-available Road Trip installments as an effective way to assemble an ad hoc retrospective from (what I consider, at least) the band's strongest years at a relatively affordable cost - especially if you were saving with the idea of a box in the neighbourhood of $200. I'm all about physical product, yet I own all but 1 of the DLS (i.e., 1991) because, despite frequent relegation to second tier status by others, I find all releases to be uniformly strong for their period and nicely diversified in terms of longitudinal representation. I've backed them up on a memory stick and they're truly as precious as most of my CD issues. In fact, requiring a little over 6 hours of music on the ipod for back-to-back long runs in the wretched southeastern heat and humidity this wkend, I turned for the umpteenth time to the fantastic December 73 (#8) and June 76 (#4) shows. Though you have multiple purchase options for 70, taking my preference for volume 2 in the matter, you could obtain shows (or portions thereof) from 68,69,70,71,72,73,76,77,80,88,89(2 shows!),and 91 for $174. Now, if like me, you find 91 dispensable, sub it out for the most excellent RT1.1 (Fall 79) and RT2.1 (9/90) - both of which are currently available thru deadnet for $20 each - effectively adding representation from yet 2 more strong years for a total that's still under $200 (not considering any applicable sales tax)./peace, K

....continuing my quest of visiting the 30 Trips shows neighbors, this little gem is up next. First Satisfaction, 1st electric Race is On since '74, 1st electric On the Road Again since '66. Sweet Roses, clicking Est->Eyes....get some!!

Great idea but...

First off - 700$? Really?73-74 - fine - as they have already done a pretty good job releasing these shows - 77 - Passaic? - until they release Cornell '77 they are just playing games - along with Buffalo and the Boston Garden (I realize the Betty Boards have been circulating for decades but still...) - games that I will pass on for a 700$ admission price - 82- 4-14 Glenns Falls, 8-6 St. Paul, 8.10 Iowa, 9.14, MSG 9-21&22 83- The Worcester shows were epic no doubt - but guys, the last 3 St. Stephens came from that tour. 10-11-83 and 10-15-83 were the jewels. Lake Placid was also nice. I was at them all. (Please release a box set of this entire tour like you did Spring '77) 84- I do agree here. 85 - Cannot argue here either - Riverbend '85 was as good as it gets. But I'd have given Springfield - 3-25 (Help-Slip and the best Sugaree I ever heard)the nod, and Hershey, Richmond (second night) some careful consideration. 86 - a shortened year so that Cal Expo is fine - though I'd liked to have seen Hampton, 3-19 or the Spectrum 3-24. 87, 88, 89 - strong shows but I wouldn't have chosen any of them in even my top 5 maybe even top ten of those years...Spectrum, MSG, Hampton, The Omni, etc... 90-Mecca, RFK, Deer Creek, Louisville... 700 is steep. I would love it if you made singles or at least select packages available???

Chicago 1980 must hear

vguy - love the idea. A great run in November 1980 for sure... Though it's on the other side of the Radio City / Warfield run, I highly suggest 8/21/80, Chicago, for those who haven't heard it. Bobby sounds like he's got a cold or something, but otherwise the playing is stellar. It starts with a Cold Rain opener, which is ALWAYS a good sign. The High Time which follows is ample evidence of how important Brent's high harmony was to their vocal blend, just gorgeous. Then there is this second set, which is as good as it looks (only other Wheel > UJB Reprise that year was Lewiston, no?). It STARTS with a very trippy Drums which gradually filters in from the set break, and instead of a noodle-Space, we get THIS: SET TWO: Drums > Uncle John's Band > Truckin' > The Other One > Drums > The Wheel > Uncle John's Band > Sugar Magnolia E Alabaman Getaway Great sounding AUD (there are good SBDs too, if you can't stand this insanely raucous Chicago crowd - needs a matrix as DaP 16!): https://archive.org/details/gd1980-08-21.akg-beyer.stankiewicz.126369.f…

"I would love it if you made singles or at least select packages available".The item description says "Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD". I think that leaves the door open for spinning mini-boxes ("music-only"?) off this behemoth to feed the can't-afford-$700-to-get-a-few-shows-I'm-really-excited-about crowd. Keep hoping! I cynically can't believe that this is "almost sold out" without anyone even knowing what it looks like and how the shows are packaged. This and the Dave's subscription plan prove that many of us just close our eyes and think of Jerry whenever GDM asks for our money! Anyone want to buy the most charming 17 1/2 month old little girl in the world? I can sell her for this and the previous 3 boxes plus enough money to buy ALL future GDM releases.

Wow that one is smoking love that whole run at Uptown. I played that piece for my friend John, who is not really into Grateful Dead music a while back. I eased him in with the Shakedown > Promised Land that closed the first set. And by the time Drums made its way into UJB his smile couldn't have gotten any bigger. Uptown is always worth a few listens. 8.19.80 has some killer stuff, with a rare 2nd set opener of Little Red Rooster,, first time performed since 1966, I think. And the sequence from 8.19.80 with Playin > Comes A Time > Playin,, primo stuff August 1980 shows are all sweet, a few have been on Sirius. 8.17.80 8.21.80 8.27.80 highlights on Today in GDHistory. Portion was some of my favorite I have heard, check out closing sequence after space. I had 8.26.80 going recently. Some more Buckeye state love, the Cleveland show is pretty killer with Sugaree opener to kick things in fine style and the closing sequence again is no joke.. Minor draw back is the hiss from 8.26.80,, but crank it up and keep moving. Uncommonly great Jerry, every set I've heard from these few weeks. And as claney indicates, the AUDs are mostly satisfying, some even wonderful. While you're at it, get more freak on with 8/31 and 9/6.

Thanks for the suggestion on 8/21/80. Does look like a very unique 2nd set. I'm listening to it right now and Jerry sounds like his is on fire already on Cold Rain & Snow. I've been looking for shows on archive to listen to also...I guess I'm to that point finally.

I've always had GR8 memories of '88 @Chicago.....'88 Box?

I was 15th row or better for those 3 'Rosemont' shows in April '88, scoring that first Rosemont 'Miracle' in the parking lot, 4/1/88 for a Miracle that night. Also.......enjoying a ride in a 'pick me up' and hanging with new Headfriends B4 and after. Listen to the Boards on IE and SEE! HEY NOW ...ready for 30 Trips, Indeed! Also, was @MSG that previous year and '91. :)

My 5 stages of 30 trips purchase

1. Holy Cows, a show from each year! A show I attended! I love the dead, this is a must purchase. 2. Holy Cows did I just spend $700 on CDs? I already have a large amount of their recordings, whether you're a millionaire or a thousandaire that's a lot of $$ for luxury, I gotta cancel this. 3. I better tell my spouse or cancel because 3 weeks have passed and I just spent $700 and I attended 2 Chicago shows so money is definitely being spent. I'll cancel after the fare thee well stuff is over. 4. Fare Thee Well went very well, plowed through all the recordings I have, I'm gonna spend this much anyways.... I'm keeping this order. Plus, Fare Thee Well box (IMO) looks more expensive than 30 trips even though it's $500 less. 5. Can't wait... Even with no clue on what it'll look like. Could be cdr's for all I know.....but yes, I spent $700 on a box set that I first regretted but now can't wait. I should probably tell my spouse. I owe her one though... She brought a puppy home without telling me. He's 5 now. I also have been married for 21+ years so worse case I'm a dumbass for this or that anyways so not worried about 30 trips purchase.

And November. Let's face it, this is a peak year, deserving of more appreciation (and more releases!) What about Gainesville?
