    6/16/74

I know your comment is seven years old now, but any chance you still have 6/16/74 available? I'd love to have it.

    Stop complaining!!!
Having been there, I waited more than 35 years to hear what the band released of this beautiful show. Sometimes you have to say thanks for that and be appreciative. Don't get so hung up in the "I want more" vibe. As for the folks who didn't like the crowd back then, well, the makeup of those audiences beat anything I saw after 1976, or especially 1986. So maybe there were bikers and drunks and such, but nobody messed with my trip and I didn't hear about anybody getting hurt, so lets all TAKE A BREAK! .....all the years combine.....

Distinct memory of this show: 1) The crystal clear Wall o' Sound, first time I'd heard it outdoors... fookin' amazing!!!! Wondering how the people who lived a mile away from the show liked it, as they had to've had a pretty good listen. Turned out to be the last time I'd hear it, too....such a shame, such high hopes, so huge and massive and bulky, and highs and lows and mids and inner... 2) The realization, first time for me, that our community could be a destructive force... The state of Iowa let us camp there for free! The state fairgrounds, with running water, showers(!!!), easy access in & out of the fairgrounds and all that, and we were there a day before the show. Then after the show, a bunch of shitheads intentionally plugged the toilets, kicked 'em apart, flooding the washhouse; the fencing was ripped up and thrown into a bonfire. Why? Fuzzy memory of the show: 1) Being able to enter with glass bottles of wine and tequila... 2) Seats about the 35 yard line, center. Sweet!! (although in retrospect, the acoustical sweet spot was the whole stadium, with the Wall) 3) Brain boiling humidity. 7 x 10^37) Some big guy a row or two in front of us with a 5 gallon plastic can of beer that he was sharing, emptying, then refilling somewhere. Myself stumbling. lurching to refill my glass to cure the cottonmouth.... 143) Bumping into some friends from back home in SD, one of whom didn't want to dose, who got the massive buzz from drinking the cooler water (which had the bag of doses accidently dissolved into it when the ice melted)... All in all a great show, the last I would see for a few yrs, until after the big break, with the concomitant loss of the Wall.

my second bus stop. the previous year was my first show and we drove from chicago in my new red celica to my hometown! my life had already changed. this year we thought it might be different. it was. we took 2 large buses with 60 heads on each bus. drove all night. at 11am got enlightened and the ticket from our fearless leader and the rest of my life had started:] the first incident to fall under the gaze of my faithful kodak instamatic! 4 rolls of pics that make this blurry roadtrip look like a Hubble masterpiece. my biggest thrill was seeing an old friend from early 60's woodlawn elementary school at the show!!! my dear friend, roger meyers:) he had the same hunk of white tape on his eye glasses that he had in 6th grade!! what a hoot:) i will remember that moment for the rest of my life!!! this road trip has the makings of a whole book of stories that would make ya wonder:) the show was top notch for a newbie type. the trip home to chi-town was somethun as back then we didn't have designated bus drivers:o yikes. and thats another story.....

fishpalace First show I almost went to. I was 15 and working at the corner mom and pop grocery store...wanted to hitch from Springfield, Il the 350 miles to Des Moines but didn't know where Des Moines was, had never hitched, and I had to work! I have since seen around 200 shows and have over 10,000 solo miles on my thumb. Footnote: My wife is from Des Moines and that was her first show......just got a photo from the show yesterday.

and my first Scarlet (which I thought was going to be my first china cat, when I heard that lilting intro) Mars Hotel (Ugly Rumors) was not released yet. The Eyes of the World > Big River was/is remarkable, ladies and gentlemen-please fasten your seatbelts! ;o} Beyond remarkable. the Wall of Sound, wooooooweeeeeee!!!!!! The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

I was a few weeks shy of 19.My friends and I drove from central Illinois. The main thing I always remembered about the music was the really long and awesome Playing In The Band. And then after the show the rest area's on Interstate 80 were full of partying Deadheads.

Just received DP 29 and was surprised to see the hidden gems, which I double checked. As they are not on the official set lists, which shows are the extra 3 songs from Atlanta and 2 songs from the Lakeland show from?

Set List from the show shows no such songs?

China > Rider was in the 1st set, after Jack Straw, while Ship of Fools fits in after Greatest Story in the 3rd set.

Lost Sailor 2 ... All of the bonus tracks on DP 29 are from Norman, Oklahoma October 11th, 1977. And yes, they are quite sweet, despite being separated from the rest. Go find the first set too, it rocks! Let it Grow particularly, and the Help on the Way->Slipknot!->Franklin's tower was the last of this trio played until spring 1983. For this is all a dream we dreamed, one afternoon long ago ...

I can see no justifying reason other than greed that these shows are not released in their entirety. The Roadtrips concept is not meeting the needs or desires of the customer base. Everyone I have talked to would much prefer complete shows ala Dick's Picks. I realize that not every song of every show is a gem but they joy is in experiencing a show from start to finish. It is holistically much more satisfying. I was at this show as a 20 year old college student. It was a three setter, five hours long from 1 to 6 pm. No one else has mentioned that Ned Lagin was there and performed some of Seastones with Phil. The sound system was absolutely amazing, my jaw dropped when they played the first notes. It sounded like the best McIntosh home stereo that you ever heard except BIGGER! The crowd was fairly rough looking, more biker types than hippies. I was able to get up on one of the look-out towers to the side of the stage and noticed trash cans filled to the brim with ice and Heineken beer back behind the speakers. A hot long party and the Dead gave us everything we could want and more!
