    Reflections on a Tour
Well, the Spring Tour 2009 is in the bag and was definitely one for the books! That's for sure. I know a lot of people might think the Dead are dead without certain members, and to be honest, the last couple of tours the Dead have done were great experiences for me, but I always felt like people were "sitting in" to fill some big shoes left behind. Even Warren, in 2004, felt like he was filling in. So I went to the LA Forum show expecting what we got in 04. Oh how wrong I was! That first throat grabbing chord of the show was like the band was saying to everyone in the Forum, "Listen up people! We're not f*#cking around here, we're here to play so let's get down to it!" And then BOOM, right into that unreal VLB groove, with a beat that you just had to move to. I have been doing tours since the late 70's/early 80's and to my ears, this band has never been better. On the one hand, they're tighter, yet they're also looser. I cant explain it, and honestly, that's about the best one can say about the Dead when they're really "on", "well, I cant explain it man, you just have to experience it..." ;) I've been keeping up with the Tour, listening to the shows online as the Tour progressed and the first half was just okay for me. But in LA it felt like something happened that night and everything the boys had been striving for just all fell into place that night. The Forum felt like an old school East Coast indoor arena show, complete with rabid, hardcore heads that were so grateful to be back at the party again. This was not a "best of" tour. This was a "here's who we are now, dig it" tour, and man did I love what I heard on the West Coast leg of this Tour. That night in LA, I realized that Warren and Jeff no longer felt like they were filling in for anyone anymore. The *were* the Dead just as much as Bobby, Phil, Billy or Mickey are. To me, the Dead has always been a band in flux. There have been so many iterations of them I've sort of lost count. So to those who lament a Jerryless Dead, all I can say is, you don't know what you're missing. Sure I miss Jerry and I miss Brent. But the Dead as they are right now? Sound the best I've ever heard them and they're not stale, they're still out there pushing the envelope and really, isn't that what this is all about? So yeah, I no longer get weepy when I hear Brokedown Palace or Ripple or Box of Rain. I just revel in the fact that I get to experience this amazing thing we call The Dead, once again. And I am truly Grateful. One final comment...It felt so great to experience Shakedown once again and the lot scenes in LA and the Gorge were excellent. Like some upthread said, I found my self also saying things, and using expressions that I haven't used in a long time...It felt good to have the tribe back together again, didn't it?!

My sentiments exactly. It was a bittersweet night. Very cool to stay up until 3 am+ listening to the whole show, with great interviews and commentary thrown in during the set break. But it was so great to back out there catching 4 shows, eagerly anticipating seeing the setlists of the shows I didn't catch each morning, listening to the downloads etc. I'm going to miss all that. I'm firmly in the camp that thinks the music has changed/evolved in a great way....new sounds, tunes I never thought I'd get to hear live, Rhythm Devils taking it to new heights each night etc etc. Warren and Jeff are as good as it gets in the post Jerry/Brent/Keith/Pigpen era, which is to say they're both amazing musicians who fit right into the fabric of the band and helped to make the magic each night. Jeff is a monster on the keys and Warren managed to channel the ghosts of Jerry/Brent/Pigpen in his paying and singing while keeping it new and fresh and his own as well. Branford's interview during the set break was spot on: they're older, they've each gone on to do new things are are coming at playing together from a new angle, pushing the boundaries and not just treading the worn path. By the time they got to the Gorge, they seem to have all completely melded musically and got the bugs all worked out. We may not see them out on the road two thirds of the year anymore....at least as The Dead, but I gotta think the fun they seemed to be having along with the embrace of the fans will pull them back for another go around or two down the road. And yes, it was really cool to hear Mickey thank the crew and bring them out onstage for some well deserved applause. I've seen them with Jerry from the early 80's onward, seen Phil and his band, Ratdog, the Dead 2003/4 and I can say I had as good a time at these shows and I've had at any. All different, all excellent and all the music of the Grateful Dead which is what it's all about. Thanks guys!

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum to use but I'm sure Marye will let me know. I just went to the GDTS TOO website for the first time in years to see about Ratdog tix and was amazed at what i found. It prompted me to send them the following... Please don't take offense. Just a little constructive criticism. It's been many years since I've visited your site. Back in the day I thought it was the greatest thing ever. The days of calling the hotline every day sometimes multiple times were over, but come on guy's, your site is really quite primitive by today's standards. To my dismay, when I tried to fill out the credit card form I discovered it wasn't interactive. I consider myself a caveman for not having a printer/copier/scanner combo, but times are tough. I don't even know where to find a fax machine. Aren't we supposed to be a paperless society by now? This planet needs all the trees she can produce. The decorative envelopes are still very cool, and should be an option, but how about an online interactive version of the envelope? I'm sure there are thousands of heads out there into web design who would be willing to collaborate and put something together for you. I'm not a designer myself but I'm willing to help wherever I can. Just something to consider. Peace and much thanks for all you do. So this would be a shout out to all of you webmasters out there if they are receptive. I know youre out there, a simple Google search for anything Dead related shows me there's some mad skills out there. I have not recieved a response yet, but when I do I'll post it.

thor369 - I'm still waiting for my two Chicago show downloads that were ordered May 3rd! Hope your wife is better. she is doing much better. it was an asthma and panic attack type combo, scary stuff. my CD isnt a download, it was a CD i paid for, at the show, they was recording off the mixing boards, and pressing official show CD's on the spot for $25, with show date, and place, on official The Dead CDs. it is why i dont want the download to replace my CD, my puter dont have good speakers, and i only listen to my CDs in my car, or my headset CD player. i cant reburn 1 on my puter, and it isnt the official CD with the printed faces on them.

Chicago was incredible... 20 years since since my love's and mine last show but with one more in tow - our 11 year old son whose favorite song right now is Throwing Stones. All with a different yet better spirit. The magic was back. It does remind me of reading a book where you don't understand the words and you go back later and understand it even more after life experience. I started reading the book long ago and loved it - and It means even more now. The shows brought smiles, healing and joy. Peace Mike P.S. Please Tour again !!!! - You are beautiful together ! Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there

I dont how I feel about this, but Donna's band is playing on Thursday night, the night before the Dead's Coliseum show. She will be in Wantagh, a stone's throw away from Uniondale. I dont know if she is scheduled to appear anywhere Friday night, but I wonder if she will be joining the boys for a song or two? I LOVE the parking lot scene also!! My first show was in July of 1989 and I was amazed at how much fun that parking lot of RFK stadium in DC was!!! By the time the show had started I had made lots of new friends, eaten some corn cooked from a pot on a camp stove in one tent, sold a few veggie pitas from the back of our friend's car, paid a guy $2 to sing The Wheel on his guitar and give me a bracelette he had made, played someone's bongos like I was in the band myself, and many more things not to be mentioned:) GOOD TIMES!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Canyon, but its next week that I was talking about. I checked her website and it appears she has nothing scheduled Fri or Sat night, when the Dead will be at Nassau and MSG. she will be in the area because she has a NJ gig scheduled for sunday. Although I was never a big Donna fan back in the day, it would be cool to see her on stage for a song or two. Maybe she can even shriek a little with Bobby in Playin in the Band for old time's sake. Yaknow, she takes a lot of flak, but every time I saw her with the boys she definitely added something positive. And there are some other songs that definitely weren't the same without her besides Playin, like Music Never Stopped, Row Jimmy and Sunshine Daydream. Admittedly Brent made a valiant effort, but they just weren't quite where it had been. Maybe it's because I didn't start going to shows until 77, dunno. I'm just sayin is all, just my opinion. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

And seal the crypt....! Sorry to be a buzz crusher, folks -- but the truth is spoken here. After seeing Albany last night and reading the review on the tour page I was wondering if I was at the same show. The music isn't really bad, it just ain't juicy anymore, more like opioid. Even though I got all jammed up before the show I fell asleep 3 times during, snoozing most peacefully during Warren Haynes' work during Sugaree. Don't get me wrong, I think he had some shining moments, it's not his fault somebody has a leash on him. Will be at Worcester tonight, hoping for the best. Tickets are going for $20-40 on the street. If you want a miracle, they aren't hard to come by, at least in New England.

I have to say i was not happy at all with the Albany show. First off we bought our tickets presale. The expensive seats. Where were they located section 228 row S. Where was that? The very top of the arena obstructed view of the stage. My review on buying seats presale. Do not do it. P.S. Ticket brokers suck. Ruining it for all of us. Legalized extorsion if you ask me ,but hey it continues to flourish, and nobody does a thing about it. Keep lining those fat wallets with our hard earned money. Thanks alot. Ticket brokers buy up most of the good tickets to profit off of, they arent Deadheads....their Dickheads Now about the show. The show did have highlights .....into the mystic west la,cumberland, sugaree, broken arrow, throwing stones and fade away but just way too much space. To much meandering on their instruments. I mean what kind of drugs did i need to be on to enjoy what was happening on stage. The second set was like listening to space forever . Dadadadadada...da da da da...daa...daa. ....daaa..dadadadada...daaaaa...daaa dadadadada....daaaadaaaa. I think you get the point give us a break. We came to sing, dance, reflect and enjoy the moment. I dont know if anybody enjoyed that . I saw people in the front row looking confused and like ....where is this going? Come on with the price of the ticket give us a real show for crying out loud. I couldnt tell if they were playing for the fans or themselves? I love Drums..... space i could do without .If i had my way i`d replace space with a few acoustic songs to give micky and bill a break. Hey Phil ! You Rock! Please give us another tour same lineup as last but ask Warren to come along for the ride. Warren you are definitely MVP candidate. Bring back Phil and Friends. Phils band has it going on. I saw them last summer a few times un-freaking-believable. Down to business Thankyou Phil for having your priorities straight. Hope things are better the rest of the tour . Albany didnt do it for me and my entourage

I will be at the Gorge...... I pick up the tour in Denver May 7th, and will also see the ABB in Oakland at the Fox theatre May 12 & 13. I am looking forward to seeing family & friends as well as new faces. As for all of the good seats being bought up by scalpers- I got my tix through GDTS TOO at regular price. I got 13th row sec CCC on the floor in Denver, and sec 102 row CC at Shoreline on 5/10. Looking at the charges on my credit card a couple of weeks ago, I got reserved at Shoreline on 5/14 as well as the Gorge on 5/16... They should be arriving shortly and I'd be willing to bet they will be really good seats as well. My only nose bleed seat I got through ticketbastard - It will be nice to sit with Jerry in LA that night and enjoy the show. Peaceful journey to everyone heading to the shows - enjoy it while it lasts - watch out for each other and please be safe driving home. We're gonna pitch a ball Down to the union hall We're gonna romp and stomp till midnight We're gonna fuss and fight till daylight We're gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long Shine On! These have been wonderful shows. Sunday in Worcester was pure magic. Every song was done with passion. I haven't been to a show this good in years. And I'm being objective. I've seen everyone. Original Dead. Allmans. Mule. Derek Trucks. Widespread Panic. Phish. Sunday was the most magical show I've seen since an ABB show I saw in 2004. To those dissing Warren: what guitar player are you listening to? I can't believe what I'm hearing from him. Those who are comparing this to something else just can't get past their own hang-ups about God-knows-what. If you don't catch one or two of these gigs then you are truly missing out.

Heres what I can remember from the Saturday and Sunday shows from WorcesterPlease add to this list if you can think of any I missed because I definitly missed a bunch dont to my mental state.=) Saturday: Goin Down the Road Feelin Bad Althea China Cat I know you rider CRAZY drum session Micky and Kreutz Trip out sesh for like 30-40 min maybe more An unbelievable rendition of Terrapin Station (full) One More Saturday Night (of course) Encored into: Johnny B. Goode Sunday: Jack-a-Roe Good Lovin' Minglewood Blues I cant get no Satisfaction Warren Haynes Blues song, unidentified Help on the Way/ Slipknot Jam session Bill Kreutzman & Micket Hart Drum Solo (sick) Drum solo electronic/ keyboard trip session into a full band trip session Jam into Scarlet Begonias Fire on The Mountain Shine Your Lovelight Encored with: Samson and Delilah Both shows were unbelievable. The energy in the DCU center was tremendous and the band was really getting into the show and the feel of the crowd in both shows. Warren Haynes may not be Jerry Garcia but this guy can play the guitar as good as anyone right now. He was truly masterful. Very long trippy jam sessions in both nights and some incredible drumming by both Mickey hart and Bill Kruetzman with Jeff Chimenti rippin the keys all night. I thoroughly enjoyed both nights. Heres to next years tour. Keep your fingers crossed.

For context, I'm a 60+ GD show guy who's also seen another 50+ post-Jerry dead-related shows. Sunday in Worcester was a monster show. Honestly, I didn't have very high expectations for this tour but went in with an open mind and came away impressed and very glad I went. For me this was the best GD-family show I've seen since the 2001 PLQ which I absolutely loved. Very much a team effort, not a Bobby-rock star show. Bobby had a few senior-moments but also stepped up big at times and for the most part he was very focused. The more obscure stuff like Cream Puff War and Born Cross Eyed sounded very 1960's style like the first album. Phil and the drummers were as locked in as it gets all night (Mickey and Bill haven't lost a step in the least) and the best segments were when Bobby dialed in with them for minutes at a time while Warren ripped off successions of tasty licks that danced and teased in, out and around the melodies. This band obviously rehearsed quite a bit and there was a sense of having something to prove, as if they were saying "this isn't just a nostlaga trip, we can still bring it". As was always the case the Centrum is a dump with inadequate vending and bathrooms but it still felt good to be back there seeing a Dead show. I really loved this show and I wish I was going to another on this run.

Canyon Critter, thanks so much for the post of the video from Charlottesville. This was my 12 year old son Josh's first Dead show. He's a huge fan of the "Gloria" from Dick's Picks 21. We were high fiving and going crazy when the boys started playing this for the encore. A very special memory for both of us and watching the video brought back the moment. Peace to you and many thanks!

We thought the Worcester shows were terrific! Sat night was great - then Sun night was 10 times better - exceeded all expectations!Gratefultwinz - you called it on the Scarlet/Fire - magnificent! Sat night there was a Metal Madness show at the Palladium down the street, so it was really a fun people-watching experience between the deadheads and the metalheads - the streets of Worc were a crazy place to be! I can't believe some of the negative reviews/comments about the shows on the Other Ones site; it makes me wonder if I (or they) are living in an alternate universe. One person said the first set Sun night was so bad that he left during the set break, and we thought it was so good that our butts barely touched our seats, and it seemed like it was over in a flash! I'm grateful that my cup is usually half full, and this past weekend it was overflowing!

I have to agree with you. From what I have seen (YouTube clips) and heard of this tour so far (I have all but Albany on my computer), they sound really good, much more tight than their last tours in 2004 and 03. I am not even a big Warren fan but he is nailing it, sounding really fricking good! I read terrible reviews of the Ratdog tour all last summer and I have to admit they made me wonder but then I went and saw Ratdog for myself and was blown away. I just don't understand how it could be so bad you would walk out at the end of the first set sheesh! I have sat through some horrific concerts in my time and never felt the need to storm out early let alone with this tour, I mean Sundays show from what I have heard simply just rocks... I'm not sure what people are expecting?? I for one cannot wait to jump on the bus when it stops in Denver. See y'all on the road! "When the smoke has cleared she said, that's what she said to me. You're gonna want a bed to lay your head and a little sympathy"

Hi everyone. We bought a package for two for Wilkes Barre and it is nonrefundable. We are stuck in FL and will not be able to make the show. Package was paid for months ago and it includes two tickets in good section, room at the Fairfield Inn paid in full, and shuttle from room to show and back. If you are going and don't have your accommodations or tix already or even if you have a friend who needs a ticket. We really don't want these tickets to go unclaimed and our seats to be empty (how sad). Absolutely no scalpers please, you ruin it for all of us! Email if interested at a.mcnulty@hotmail.com.
