"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Its growing on me. I'm slow to get through these shows and am not great at show reviews. My single observation so far is Phil. Considering he did not know how to play the Bass when he joined the band in Oct. '65. Its amazing to me the influence he had on their sound by '67 and '68. Its also amazing how many times I let that guy f* up my car speakers. You would think I would have learned my lesson by now.

Yeah it is really cool how Phil developed his own sense of an instrument, though its not really a surprise that he was so good at the instrument being a trained musician prior to him picking up the bass. I have friends who are professional musicians and some of them can play any instrument you put in their hands once they figure out the mechanics of the thing. The instrument may change but the foundation of music theory never does so the notes are all the same. It would be more impressive if he had no formal music training and then became the bass player he did. Being a very capable musician prior to the bass and not knowing how to play the bass isn't really the impressive part to as much as the approach he took to the instrument when making the music that is really top notch.

On 1995... Again, DL2 did a good job picking this, exceeding my expectations of 95. Granted as I type this, Samba in the Rain is playing and Vince is singing, and I'm trying not to throw myself out the window... but overall, very enjoyable. Jerry is present. Good stuff... ah, truckin.

I started the show about 50 feet from the stage. Towards the end of the first set I turned and began making my way to the back, and remember thinking- "Holy crap- where did all these people come from?" Probably the most I have ever seen in one place at one time. Our bus driver had pulled into the parking area and just shut it down without turning it around for an easy escape afterward... big mistake- we must've sat there a good 2 or 3 hours before we finally got out of the lot and onto the road. By the end of the day the shitter was full, Clark- the ride home was quite smelly and waste was sloshing into the aisle. Plus somewhere near the NYS border we got pulled over for speeding- but the driver managed to talk his way out of it.

This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. Kayak Guy: I am very much a complacent backer of the Boston Garden '91 shows as well - the playing was awesome, and of course Brucy sitting in is always a good thing. I was at the first show on Friday night and I steadfastly recall the moment when they went Help > Slip! >.....Fire on the Mountain??? I was *out of it* and looked at my buddy next to me and recall saying "I know this song, but I just can't place it at the moment!" Just to frame my mind at that point. All in all a fantastic run. I was also at the Highgate '95 show, and again was a bit out of my mind but this time *a little further (nay, A LOT) furthur* so I don't in fact recall it being absolutely terrible but in retrospect learning of the gate crashing etc. it was a disappointment especially for my final show. I also recall the parking lot was so damn crammed that we gave up trying to leave and our 6-car caravan was like totally full of peeps, so my brother and I had to sleep on the ground, in the parking lot, with only a bedsheet. it is the only time in my adult life when I have snuggled with another dude for warmth. My brother's cool so it's all good.

6 songs before drums and the night before includes Blow Away. If you take into account the selection for 30 Trips 1989 pick it has what is regarded as one of "Blow Away" best performances. Also,1987 selection includes Morning Dew. I would guess they didn't want to take away anything from those 2 songs Morning Dew from 87 and Blow Away from 89 by selecting a show in 1988 that has both, which in my opinion would water it down. It would have been hard to follow up the spectacular Morning Dew with another version and I'm sure they wanted the first "Blow Away" to be one of the better ones. With all that being said I hope 7.2.88 gets released,, not a dud from July 88 shows.

The Boston run in 1994 was nice, this is a good example of the run.1991 was much better and deserves box set treatment, it blows away the NYC run that year. I enjoyed Vermont 1994 and thought the band played well enough to make the trek again in 1995 when Dylan opened and blew the GD off the stage and i'm not a big live Dylan fan. You can decide for yourself which was the better of the 2. https://archive.org/details/gd94-07-13.sbd.georges.17029.sbeok.shnf WARNING this is one of the worst Jerry shows I saw. https://archive.org/details/gd95-06-15.schoeps.7745.sbeok.shnf

11/29/80 - I believe they kept 11/29/80 in the vault because 1) 11/28, which they DID release, is a very good show as well despite the average setlist, 2) lots of people have the amazingly well-recorded 11/29/80 AUD already, and 3) it gives them a 3rd show to release eventually that will complete the trio of 11/28-30/80. I think this is one of a few pairings where they released the less obvious show in order to pave the way for future releases. Another example: They released 7/3/88 while most were expecting 7/2/88. Why? My theory: So they still have dry powder - they don't want people to think the BEST shows have been released already. When 11/29/80 and 7/2/88 are released, people will snap them up to close the loop on the clusters. Though honestly the 11/29/80 AUD is so good I might prefer that to the soundboard (like 8/6/71, where the AUD is a better listening experience than the SBD to my ears) 10/1/94 - YES! Great show. I have in my head a sense for how '94 "sounds" (due the Highgate VT '94 show I attended which really, truly sucked - embarrassingly horrible for them and the attendees) and this killed that prejudice. This is a great release - killer setlist, killer execution. Jerry seems very present and engaged - unlike Highgate where there were songs where actually seems to not be playing at all. An "off night" in the 70's was still an OK show, by the 80's it meant a kinda sloppy show, and by 93-95 it meant disaster. 10/1/94 is a wonderful non-disaster - possibly the last "great" show (though 10/14/94 might deserve this title 3/27/93 - I have mentioned on another board that this show, which I attended WAS a great one. I used to listen to the 3/24/93 a lot as well - a great late era Here Comes Sunshine.

I think this one is a sleeper for the best show in the box. A dream set list for me: 1982 - 7/31, Manor Downs, Austin, TX -Promised Land is rocking, Jerry does a killer Bird Song, he flubs the first chorus in Brown Eyed Women but I still love it, a funky Scarlet>Fire and Morning Dew is epic. One hell of a 3 hour show! =Set One= 01. Tuning 02. Alabama Getaway -> 03. Promised Land 04. Candyman 05. Tuning 06. El Paso 07. Bird Song -> 08. Little Red Rooster 09. Ramble on Rose 10. It's All Over Now 11. Brown Eyed Women -> 12. Music Never Stopped 13. Deal =Set Two= 14. Scarlet Begonias -> 15. Fire on the Mountain -> 16. Estimated Prophet -> 17. Eyes of the World -> Jam -> 18. Drums -> 19. Space -> 20. Uncle John's Band -> 21. Truckin' -> 22. Morning Dew -> 23. One More Saturday Night =Encore= 24. Don't Ease Me In

I agree with you 420bandito. This is an epic show and a frequent listen to my audience tape for the past 32 years (man has it been that long?!) always brings a smile to my face. This is the eve or Jerry's Birthday and the crowd is so psyched and yelling "Happy Birthday" from UJB on. The Second Set is just so hot!

...is how they will have dealt with 'severe dropout problems' from the PCM masters on (at least) the '85 show. I thought the 10-21-83 show was also derived from a beta PCM master, but I'm not sure on that. I guess we'll see. After so many fantastic releases, I am faithful they will have done a fine job patching this one up. Also, I have not been partaking in the listening parties so I do not know what if anything from Riverbend, Augusta or Worcester they have sampled thus far. I want to listen with virgin ears. For those of you who own both 'The Golden Road' & 'Beyond Description' box sets, you can make up a 'Proto 30 Trips' by adding ALL of the bonus material from each of the releases, even the live albums ( 'Live Dead', 'Skull & Roses', 'Reckoning' & 'Dead Set'. I left off 'Europe 72 since it's already well represented) onto 1 playlist and arranging everything chronologically. It makes for a great overview of the band as well as "UPPING" the psyche factor for the Mother Box.

I love the early 80s. The folk songs were especially sweet then, such as Jack-a-roe and Peggy-o. Best period for these. 7/18/76 is my favorite unreleased show ever. The second set is so hot, it's one of those moments that's simply better than anything imaginable, except maybe that one Dark Star...you know the one ;)

Box of Rain is on the single - good news for those of us who are vinyl heads - not such good news for those without a deck. Sadly there is however on CD the following tracks - Dough Knees, Day Job and Way to Go Home - I also have a horrible feeling there's a samba in the rain there too...still at least we don't have to suffer a Wave to the Wind (unless that's on the bonus disc lol). As for the Box video reveal - we've seen and heard nothing....makes me think that there'll be a delayed shipping email soon - if it's not already in post-production and ready for a reveal by now - it will be delayed.... Maybe they'll delay and throw in the crappy FTW box as a 'bonus' - in which case I'll take Wave to the Wind instead lol....

Though, all is shortly to be forgiven... Incidentally, I dreamed of 30 Tripz last week; well, rather a nightmare - the kind you have/had incident to nervous anticipation of exam week at university. I'd received the box - a cheaply constructed affair with a glossy veneer peeled in many places to reveal pabulum brown cardboard beneath - and immediately noticed shows missing as well as caramel - yes, caramel - on the 7 inch single that I removed from a plastic sheath and carried out into a grey rainfall thinking to clean it off, at which time I awoke in a cold sweat. True story (except for a bit of hyperbolic cliche with the "cold sweat" business). Thank you for the link! I was hoping for a peak inside the box, but the exterior shots are awesome. Boxzilla looks better than I imagined. I'm listening to creampuff as I type this on headphones. The mix is interesting. Jerry's vocals are 100% on the left speaker only and pig's organ are 90% on the right speaker. Jerry's guitar is also much heavier on the right. Not my favorite dead mix, but it really shows how focused on psychedelica they were at this time. I can't wait for this box!!!

After seeing this I'm not sure if the name "Boxzilla" still fits... Boxzilla sounds so big and fierce. Sure it's big, but maybe a little more dainty than fierce. "Boxarella," or "Big Box Mama?" Don't get me wrong... I really like the art. I think it captures the free-spirit celebration that is the Grateful Dead show. Only seeing three sides (2 sides and top), I'm imagining that the four sides are each a season to represent winter, spring, summer and fall tours (fall and summer shown here). Again, really want to see the inside and how the CDs are cased.

Not to ruffle any feathers but this box looks BETTER than the trunk E72 was housed in.As for a name I like GARGANTUA it fits as the box alone is GARGANTUAN, & I too would like to see just how the shows are packaged. Just think if TPTB show us exactly what GARGANTUA contains it SELLS OUT, if I didn't already preorder I believe I would just based on the box itself, if the box looks that good you know the contents look GREAT. The artwork looks cool so far, from what we've seen. Though the names of the band members written on the bottom is not only unnecessary, it detracts from the aesthetic presentation of the box. In my opinion, a poor artistic choice. Then again, maybe we don't know the names of the band members, and we can look at the box to be reminded. As it turns out, the decision to include those names is courtesy of the Road Trips Packaging Commitee and the United Boxcutters of America.

Was just thinking how much prettier the Mona Lisa would look if the words Mona Lisa were drawn in big letters across the bottom of the painting. This is the effect the names written on the bottom of this box has to me. A beautiful picture- a gorgeous box, and then these huge distracting words at the bottom. Anyways, just my two cents. Probably should have kept the criticism to myself.

Since the box itself appears to be high, it might house 2 levels - 15 shows each level - if you take 15 DaP's and group them together and then double that area you can get the idea. It still leaves room for the book and any extras. Hopefully it'll be DaP cases vs. those sh*tty Road Trips digipacks.

....reading DeadBase 50. Woke up a couple of hours later with it resting on my chest. No wonder it was hard to breathe. Thought I cracked my sternum! Love, love, love this tome. I found out a few minutes ago that David Crosby sat in on the second half of the second set during the 9.10.72 Hollywood Palladium show. Jumped right to it on relisten.net and am checking it out now. Who knew? I sure as hell didn't....priceless....

....hey Dave, I posted a similar 30 Trips box interior set up on the Nashville board a few minutes ago. I, however, think it will be only one level of discs as opposed to stacked. Is the box high? Or those of us buying it?.... ....double post. Sorry. I haven't done That in a while....

Box looks great - and the shows speak for themselves - but got a feeling we'll be a little let down on 'extras' - I think it's the book and scroll - that's it..... Not that I need the secret compartment and hidden coin (Other one TOO) or backstage pass replicas.....I'd want real extras (a photobook like the McCartney remasters), bonus discs, downloadable content card, a visual counterpart (i.e. dvd of last ever show), something more I'd actually use....however it will be what it will be...was disappointed as hell with lack of extras on Europe box but the music made up for it - I'm sure that will be the case here (exclusing Dough Knees, Day Job, Samba in the Rain etc...)
