Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

    The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

    The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

    The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

    Keith quote from Blair Jackson's Goin' Down the Road book
    In the tape collector's section in the back, Jackson introduces each year's "top 10" and in the 1978 blurb he states "Keith is a non-factor in many shows." I don't have the book with me for the exact wording, but that's pretty close. But he also says something along the lines of it's hard to tell much difference between the best of 1977 and 1978, which would echo your sentiments. That was published in early 1992 and probably the first time I saw it. I tend to agree with you Love Jerry. While I think 1977 is amazing, some of the 1978 stuff is at least as good. That brief upper Midwest tour in late January - Early February '78 is amazing. The southern/SE tours in both April and December are really good and of course the Winterland shows after Egypt and New Years are epic! Seems many fans and the band thought things were getting stagnant, but there were a ton of good shows taking place in '78 and early '79 with Keith and Donna. Perhaps the marriage troubles were becoming too much to handle or the opiates or who knows. But the music still stands up to me as some of their best.

    I have to say, I'm with lovejerry on this one.... That post is a post I've been thinking about writing for along time now, but have found that this topic is growing tiresome..... Still. My ears just dont hear the RAPID or TERRIBLE decline..... Having gotten thru the first 3 shows in my Europe trunk with what I call "deep listening", I find myself in utter disbelief at what he's doing on piano during that run.... Beautiful, creative and flourishes of piano runs that make me dream of bucolic rolling green hills on a lazy summer day..... His playing had such a dreamey, subtle vein running through it.... So if one is to compare what he sounded like from Europe 72, to 78, then I guess I can see your point....those flashes were significantly less, however the peaceful, subtle, floating style is still very much alive to my ears in the latter years.... Put on some headphones and REALLY listen to what he's doing on a row jimmy, Peggy-o and the jerry ballads...... It's still beautiful and unique for the notes he chooses NOT to play, rather than the notes he chooses to play.....Keith's energy always seemed to me to be aloof, quiet and passive..... I think that energy is much more pronounced in the late 70s, and it comes thru in the playing..... So yes, he was no longer "playing like a god" as Phil said about him during the Europe run, but still an incredible almost savont like player who just got more and more mello, as the dead got more and more intense...... P.s. Much like the 70s v 80s debate, this topic should prob be set aside for a couple of years? Anyone?

    Something else that contributing to their departure was the volatile nature of their relationships, which also had to do with alcohol consumption.On the other hand, I think it's a paradox that Jerry would complain abnout Keith playing going south, while at the same time allowing Bob to play out of tune slide guitar! I was just listening to DaP from 1978, a nice Scarlet followed by what would have been a great Fire on the Mountain, ruined by Bob slide soloing OVER Jerry's solo.

    From wikipedia: Following the group's 1975 hiatus, Godchaux increasingly yielded to a simpler comping-based approach that melodically emulated Garcia's guitar work. Lesh has retrospectively opined that by 1978, "Keith's playing had degenerated to the point that most of us were simply trying to lose him onstage... never a paragon of self-esteem, Keith's increasing drug & alcohol use had put him in an almost vegetative state. His musical timing was suffering, and he had developed some annoying habits onstage, notably slavish imitation of Jerry's lead lines, a tic that began to irritate Jerry to no end." My comments about Keith being a "non-factor" were not as harsh as what Phil supposedly said, but my experience with listening to Dead shows is that what Keith played was just not that noticeable anymore post-hiatus...especially in '77 and after. Listen to the wonderful bouncy Keith solos on the Europe '72 tour for a contrast. Maybe he was turned down in the mix, too, in later years? Whatever the case, I just don't think there is much Keith love in the post-hiatus era namely because he wasn't doing much of interest. Still love his contributions to the Dead overall: my favorite of all the Dead keyboard players.

    I think all of the talk that he was not contributing to the live music effectively after 1977 is a bit over-hyped, based off of (as best I can tell) one comment to the effect that Keith would echo back what Jerry was playing, which irritated Jerry to no end. Well I don't hear it in any of the live music available. I have everything released from '77 and '78, and I'm just not hearing any difference in what Keith is playing. I've even looked through the archives, and as close to the end as you can get - Jack Straw, January 1979 - sounding pretty good. I don't even know if the Jerry quote is legitimate, as it did not appear in any official publication that I've seen. Yet everyone always says "yeah, Keith was a non-factor this in the end, or Keith wasn't playing well that in '78". Who can point me to a song / songs where this deficiency in Keith's playing is discernible? Estimated on Dick's Picks 18 from '78 sounds as good as all Spring '77; Cassidy on Dave's Picks 7 from '78 has some great piano, which actually evolved since '77; Fire On the Mountain from Rocking the Cradle '78 has some great piano from Keith, just as good as '77; The Wheel on Dick's Picks 18 evolved and Keith's playing sounds better than '76; Terrapin Station from Closing of Winterland '78, just as good as anything in '77; he has a kickin' solo in Big River from Closing of Winterland that's as good as anything he's done in that song previously. I could go on all day - what is this rubbish that his skills declined? One unsubstantiated quote and the guy gets dragged through the dirt. What I've read in multiple places, including Rolling Stone, is that the rift had more to do with the fact that Keith didn't want to play synthesizers. So be it, but the way folks talk about "Keith's decline" you would think there would be an endless supply of examples, like you get when people knock Brent (his vocals are off-key here, here, and here; his piano sounds like a child's toy here, here, and here; his voice sounds awful here, here, and here). Where is this pattern of decline? I just don't hear it. The man is innocent of everything except refusing to take the music in a substandard direction, which, as much as I love Jerry, I have to say, Brent Mydland was not what the sound needed (it may have been what Jerry needed personally, but certainly not what the sound needed - it was doing just fine).

    Wingtips came up briefly on the DaP 14 thread, so you know us deadheads are a classy, well-dressed bunch. Researched has shown the first head to sport Wingtips was Uncle Charlie from the sitcom My Three Sons (you can tell by the psychedelic intro with tripped out, cartoon wingtips). Close inspection of re-runs on Nickelodeon suggests that Uncle Charlie must have dosed Chip and Fred McMurray before taping. If I have dated myself.. I apologize. ..but enough about fashion, back to the music.

    Funny how these TV networks that capitalize on raking in advertising revenue are even being mentioned on this site. Who cares what network people watch? I really could care less. I watch Fox Business network in the morning while sipping my coffee. Does that put me in a red or blue isle? I served my country for 6 years in the armed forces. We live in the greatest free nation on Earth. We are all in the same boat. Peace

    I've never been political, to me they are ALL crooks and liars. I have never understood how we as a nation can be so divided along party lines. It makes no sense to me at all, never has. People are people, we are all just trying to make it on this crazy ride we are on. Life is WAY too short to worry about who we think is wrong or right. I just want to listen to some good tunes and enjoy my family and get along in peace with everyone as much as possible.

    What I find the most comical is that WE fall for this crap. Watch the ads on Fox then CNN or MSNBC. They really think these products are the favs of cons or libs! Anyway to segment and swindle the market to ones advantage. Its gotten to the point that the marketers have seeped into creating taste rather than serving it. Oh well. I have learned one helluva lot about the band and its fans from being on this site, and what is clear, there is no norm except the peoples love of the music. If you wear tie dye with Birkenstocks, or a three piece suit, it doesn't matter. The only thing I can say with certainty is that my wife knows I have a crush on Megyn Kelly. I try and tell her its because she's so smart, which leads to the "Uh Uh" response that you KNOW hasn't fooled anyone. Its gonna be 100 degrees down here again today so all thats left to do is Smile, Sweat, Smile! And thanks for the ear Sam and Jim!

I think this one is a sleeper for the best show in the box. A dream set list for me: 1982 - 7/31, Manor Downs, Austin, TX -Promised Land is rocking, Jerry does a killer Bird Song, he flubs the first chorus in Brown Eyed Women but I still love it, a funky Scarlet>Fire and Morning Dew is epic. I agree with you 420bandito. This is an epic show and a frequent listen to my audience tape for the past 32 years (man has it been that long?!) always brings a smile to my face. This is the eve or Jerry's Birthday and the crowd is so psyched and yelling "Happy Birthday" from UJB on. The Second Set is just so hot!

....may be the first selection I pick. May not see another '86 release in my lifetime so there you go. The Comes A Time listening party track reinforces my belief. Haven't heard the Copps '92 show, but I would have picked any of the Vegas shows in it's place.....I may be biased in that choice though....

...is how they will have dealt with 'severe dropout problems' from the PCM masters on (at least) the '85 show. I thought the 10-21-83 show was also derived from a beta PCM master, but I'm not sure on that. I guess we'll see. After so many fantastic releases, I am faithful they will have done a fine job patching this one up. Also, I have not been partaking in the listening parties so I do not know what if anything from Riverbend, Augusta or Worcester they have sampled thus far. I want to listen with virgin ears. Check out 8/6/82 St Paul. Listen to Space about 2 minutes before Truckin starts -- there's a jam based on both The Other One and THE ELEVEN! The Other One played over 11 beats! Very cool!

For those of you who own both 'The Golden Road' & 'Beyond Description' box sets, you can make up a 'Proto 30 Trips' by adding ALL of the bonus material from each of the releases, even the live albums ( 'Live Dead', 'Skull & Roses', 'Reckoning' & 'Dead Set'. I left off 'Europe 72 since it's already well represented) onto 1 playlist and arranging everything chronologically. It makes for a great overview of the band as well as "UPPING" the psyche factor for the Mother Box.

I love the early 80s. The folk songs were especially sweet then, such as Jack-a-roe and Peggy-o. Best period for these. 7/18/76 is my favorite unreleased show ever. The second set is so hot, it's one of those moments that's simply better than anything imaginable, except maybe that one Dark Star...you know the one ;)

Box of Rain is on the single - good news for those of us who are vinyl heads - not such good news for those without a deck. Sadly there is however on CD the following tracks - Dough Knees, Day Job and Way to Go Home - I also have a horrible feeling there's a samba in the rain there too...still at least we don't have to suffer a Wave to the Wind (unless that's on the bonus disc lol). As for the Box video reveal - we've seen and heard nothing....makes me think that there'll be a delayed shipping email soon - if it's not already in post-production and ready for a reveal by now - it will be delayed.... Maybe they'll delay and throw in the crappy FTW box as a 'bonus' - in which case I'll take Wave to the Wind instead lol....

...keep the thesaurus readily available, as yours is the first countdown that's inspired an electric current of Christmasy anticipation since the first week of January when I stood at the site's darkened windows wondering whether anyone was still home! Though, all is shortly to be forgiven... Incidentally, I dreamed of 30 Tripz last week; well, rather a nightmare - the kind you have/had incident to nervous anticipation of exam week at university. I'd received the box - a cheaply constructed affair with a glossy veneer peeled in many places to reveal pabulum brown cardboard beneath - and immediately noticed shows missing as well as caramel - yes, caramel - on the 7 inch single that I removed from a plastic sheath and carried out into a grey rainfall thinking to clean it off, at which time I awoke in a cold sweat. True story (except for a bit of hyperbolic cliche with the "cold sweat" business). I wasn't wed to the necessity of a video unveiling, but sound slumber may dictate I join the growing chorus of petitioners.../peace, K

Today on page A7, a full page advertisement announcing that "DEAD & COMPANY are going to be performing at The Wells Fargo Center here in Philly, my question is this; is it an American Express ad or a DEAD & COMPANY ad, doesn't matter as I WILL BE GOING!!! Maybe they'll recreate 9/21/72 in it's entirety WOULDN'T THAT BE SOMETHING!!!!! It's a beautiful ad by the way as it is quite poster worthy. AMEX Presale 8/26 @10am TO 8/27 @ 10pm Public on sale Friday, August 28 at 10AM HAPPY TUESDAY DEADLAND!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the link! I was hoping for a peak inside the box, but the exterior shots are awesome. Boxzilla looks better than I imagined. I'm listening to creampuff as I type this on headphones. The mix is interesting. Jerry's vocals are 100% on the left speaker only and pig's organ are 90% on the right speaker. Jerry's guitar is also much heavier on the right. Not my favorite dead mix, but it really shows how focused on psychedelica they were at this time. I can't wait for this box!!!

I saw my nephew who's now in LA and he had heard from very good sources that they're doing 7 or 8 cities. I asked if they were doing Boston, he did not know. Here's hoping they play there!!! Wow nice pictures of the boxset - hopefully that's real wood and not veneer (or paper) on cardboard. Now I want to see the unveiling - only 200 copies left (according to the main page).

After seeing this I'm not sure if the name "Boxzilla" still fits... Boxzilla sounds so big and fierce. Sure it's big, but maybe a little more dainty than fierce. "Boxarella," or "Big Box Mama?" Don't get me wrong... I really like the art. I think it captures the free-spirit celebration that is the Grateful Dead show. Only seeing three sides (2 sides and top), I'm imagining that the four sides are each a season to represent winter, spring, summer and fall tours (fall and summer shown here). Again, really want to see the inside and how the CDs are cased.

That looks so nice. Now it would be nice to see some scroll photos, maybe a glance at how the CDs are housed. Are they Digipacks or in sleeves? Just a single show out of the box on a table.

I think it looks great, I thought it was going to be some shabby box judging from the picture here. A black box with that who care image. But I like the look of the toy chest,, it will look on the shelf next to the other box sets! :-) You spend a chunk for these box sets, I want them to look good.

Not to ruffle any feathers but this box looks BETTER than the trunk E72 was housed in.As for a name I like GARGANTUA it fits as the box alone is GARGANTUAN, & I too would like to see just how the shows are packaged. Just think if TPTB show us exactly what GARGANTUA contains it SELLS OUT, if I didn't already preorder I believe I would just based on the box itself, if the box looks that good you know the contents look GREAT. PLEAE PLEASE PLEASE let's see the contents!!!!

Got my deadbase50 today. I know have so much info to enjoy. Hard to believe that set lists could make me so excited. I got to see the box today and can't wait until I have it show up at my house. I have misses out on the last few box sets and so grateful that I am getting this one.

The artwork looks cool so far, from what we've seen. Though the names of the band members written on the bottom is not only unnecessary, it detracts from the aesthetic presentation of the box. In my opinion, a poor artistic choice. Then again, maybe we don't know the names of the band members, and we can look at the box to be reminded. As it turns out, the decision to include those names is courtesy of the Road Trips Packaging Commitee and the United Boxcutters of America.

I may be in favor of the RT packaging (am I one of the few?), but I am definitely against box cutter samurais! Be more careful with the blades people!P.S. Box concept looks nice! Names to include Bruce, Tom, Vince, Brent, Donna Jean, Keith? Is there room?

Was just thinking how much prettier the Mona Lisa would look if the words Mona Lisa were drawn in big letters across the bottom of the painting. This is the effect the names written on the bottom of this box has to me. A beautiful picture- a gorgeous box, and then these huge distracting words at the bottom. Anyways, just my two cents. Probably should have kept the criticism to myself.

I REALLY REALLY hope this gets packed with grate care.......this will be coming to Australia soon and will take pride of place in my study with all my other Dead, ABB etc. box sets.... PLEASE Rhino pack this with care.....it has so many roads to travel............ Now WHAT's inside......what's the goodies...... PS I have for sale the DELETED and RARE complete 2013 numbered Allman Brothers Band live tour box set - retailed at 699$US - I'm selling for $799US plus shipping from Oz to USA - a one-time offer as I've seen this set go on ebay for over $1000US.... Also Dead May 1977 box for sale for $350US - shipping included

Since the box itself appears to be high, it might house 2 levels - 15 shows each level - if you take 15 DaP's and group them together and then double that area you can get the idea. It still leaves room for the book and any extras. Hopefully it'll be DaP cases vs. those sh*tty Road Trips digipacks.

....reading DeadBase 50. Woke up a couple of hours later with it resting on my chest. No wonder it was hard to breathe. Thought I cracked my sternum! Love, love, love this tome. I found out a few minutes ago that David Crosby sat in on the second half of the second set during the 9.10.72 Hollywood Palladium show. Jumped right to it on relisten.net and am checking it out now. Who knew? I sure as hell didn't....priceless....

....hey Dave, I posted a similar 30 Trips box interior set up on the Nashville board a few minutes ago. I, however, think it will be only one level of discs as opposed to stacked. Is the box high? Or those of us buying it?.... ....double post. Sorry. I haven't done That in a while....

Box looks great - and the shows speak for themselves - but got a feeling we'll be a little let down on 'extras' - I think it's the book and scroll - that's it..... Not that I need the secret compartment and hidden coin (Other one TOO) or backstage pass replicas.....I'd want real extras (a photobook like the McCartney remasters), bonus discs, downloadable content card, a visual counterpart (i.e. dvd of last ever show), something more I'd actually use....however it will be what it will be...was disappointed as hell with lack of extras on Europe box but the music made up for it - I'm sure that will be the case here (exclusing Dough Knees, Day Job, Samba in the Rain etc...)
