"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

ROLLINGSTONE.COM SONG PREMIERE AND EXCLUSIVE DAVID LEMIEUX INTERVIEW
Head on over to Rollingstone.com for the very first listen of "Morning Dew" 9/18/87 Madison Square Garden, David Fricke's exclusive interview with archivist David Lemieux, and the reveal of 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN's '69 and '84 shows.

*Helpful hints for using your USB:

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

Just received this ....... 'I apologize for the tardiness of this email. I have been advised by Dead.net that an official announcement will be sent out by the end of next week, regarding the ship date of your 30 Trips Around The Sun USB order. I have no further information available at this time. I am very sorry for the delays and thank you for your continued patience. Dr. Rhino'

I know you are right - but that was the only way I can think of venting. I am really doing a project in class about this very topic, but we are using assumptions rather than facts. Thanks for the admiration :) I'm still truckin!

With all due respect to a very well-thought out list of inquiries, you are never getting those questions answered by Rhino in a million years or with five million people ringing their bell (and keep in mind I am someone who cancelled their order last week, so I am among the great dissatisfied). Some of what you ask goes well beyond what they owe us as customers, it touches on issues that may be proprietary in nature and even if not, may have serious legal ramifications to the parties involved. For example, take the inquiry about a problem with the manufacture of the USB. If Rhino answers you no, that could be an admission against interest in any dispute with the manufacturer as to the manufacturer's liability. Answer "yes" and it could be a breach of confidentiality between those two parties in their agreement. Just aren't getting answers to those questions and frankly, you aren't owed that level of detail either most likely. But man I admire the effort.

I've written and called them a bunch of times, and there is no new information about the chip - just the same rhetoric! I totally feel everyone's frustration. Here is some of the email I wrote to them after asking a few questions about the USB chip, and got another templated 'generic' response...... Hi there Mac (Dr. Rhino), In all honesty, I feel that the email you just sent not only didn't explain anything, but came across as patronizing. I am doing a project for my class about distributing box sets via USB chips, and the Grateful Dead chip is a great model for this project. There have been two other USB chip releases that I can think of which have been extremely successful: The Beatles Apple USB Queen's USB Orb I understand that they were put out by huge record companies with a large budget, but it makes you question why Rhino has had such difficulty with this release. I believe as a 36 year old fan of music that USB music distribution is a great way to acquire music as well as have a tangible product. But since this 30 Trips mishap - I think people's trust in your company has been tarnished. Here are some of my questions: - Did you guys get a test product, and if so, did it work? - Was there a problem with the manufacturing of the USB chip itself? - Did the issue have anything to do with uploading the music? - Was the chip not big enough to hold all the music in 24bit FLAC & MP3 along with the PDF? (I have yet to see a small flash drive with more than 128gb) - Did you get the entire shipment in and realize that it wasn't correct - maybe the ID3 tags weren't correct? - Was the production sent offshore to be produced, and there was a communication error? The reason my teammates in class agreed to do this project with me was because of the lack of communication with customers. I mean, all you have told anybody is there was a 'production issue' and thanked them for their patience. In all honesty, you haven't given anybody a choice but to be patient. You have not offered any refunds - and thinking that a backstage pass from a show in 95 is a sufficient consolation prize for a two month delay on a $700 product is pretty ridiculous. I wanted to take on this project because I care about the Dead community, and want to help so this issue doesn't ever happen again. I mean, in the two months since we were supposed to get our USB chips, a new Dave's Pick has been released, The 2016 Dave's Pick subscription is now available to purchase, and all the Fare Thee Well shows are set to go out. I may not be the only who is dissatisfied with the level of customer service and information, but I am the person who wants to help make a difference so future Deadheads don't experience this frustration, and I'm offering to do it for free! No strings attached. I will get an A on my project with or without working with you guys - but why waste the effort? ______________ I basically got a BS answer - so, instead of emailing the BBS, try contacting these guys below. Maybe, if enough of us raise hell we will get a few more answers. The problem is how they've communicated with us. Dr. Rhino: Dr.Rhino@rhino.com VP for Rhino: ben.trask@rhino.com

Cancelled. Enough. I already have the physical box set and had bought both thinking that it would be great to have the physical box for a collector's item, but the ease of file transfer from the USB and not having to rip each disc etc. was how I would get the music to my ears most quickly. Well the delay really took away that advantage and the outlay of cash made no sense. While the way this has been handled is a travesty, I will at least give Rhino CS credit for allowing folks to cancel the order and refund the money.

I just popped '77 in for the first time as this morning's drive-to-work soundtrack. LOVING the first set so far, they really come out swinging. Jerry's leads sparkle from the get-go on Minglewood & Deal ~ sweet Deal. They Love Each Other is a perfect version, and Billy does some fun little rolls in the peak bars of Jerry's solo. And I don't think I've heard a finer Looks Like Rain from this era ~ the dynamics from everyone during the finale, including Keith, are just lovely. And the sound quality is immaculate ~ love it when I can hear the cymbal subtleties. Looking forward to the rest of this show, especially if 2nd set is even better...

Just finished with the 77 show. Here are the shows that have blown me away so far: 67,71,72,73 and now this one! Ive questioned Dave twice: the first was Daves 3. I thought that coming on the heels of E72 this show had a similar set list and would have been the same old stuff but upon listening that show rocked! One my favorite Other One's of all time! The second was this show. I thought there might have been a better 77 show for the box(4/23 maybe?) but once again Dave has proved me wrong! Jerry is simply cranking on this! The first set is great, second set even better! Great Scarlet>Fire, probably the best Samson Ive ever heard and the Terrapin is Superb! I like the early versions of Terrapin where it starts right in with a faster beat! The PITB and Wharf Rat are great too! Just a great show all around! More Spring 77 please!!! Im taking my time with this box and I listen to the shows several times before I move on! 78 today! take care folks!!

This crazy USB debacle...... a few of us have had troubles over the years-- all eventually remedied-- with Dead / Rhino Customer Service but most interactions are good. They are also two companies known for putting out a quality product and being pretty Fan-centric and responsive. This is so far out of the norm-- so NOT the way they normally operate-- and that's had me puzzled. And trying to assemble this Puzzle is tough with several critical pieces missing. Then it dawned on me...... "Non-disclosure Agreement". That's the one thing that would explain the uncharacteristic behavior and lack of useful communication between Seller and Buyer. And if there is an "NDA" between Rhino and whoever they unwisely sub-contracted the Lightning Bolt out to, that agreement may well contain a clause that even the existence of an NDA cannot be disclosed to the public-- not an uncommon occurrence. I have no inside information-- I'm just speculating--but at least my suggestion lies within the realm of possibility AND points the finger away from those beleaguered CS Folks who can only tell us what they're allowed to tell us.

To give you a clue as to what this 'could' be worth.....I bought the Dead 2003 and 2004 boxes (actually soft pack carry bags) on Munchmix when they came out - a few months back sold them for 3X what i paid to collector - and yup, that;s 2003 and 2004 Dead..... Imagine this beauty in a few years time - wishing I'd have netted a few more sets now - if any cancellations go up - I'm on them - the investor in me is hungry again

Hi Tony - I think when people say they want to see what's in the box, they mean, what does it look like? How are the shows packaged? (I'm hoping for individual digipacks a la Spring 1990). I'm pretty sure they all know it's 30 shows and what not :) I like the idea of each individual show having art related to the show poster (or backstage passes, etc). But remember, early in the year they asked for Deadheads to send in artwork to be used in the big 50th Anniversary release - so surely that will play in somewhere? (Based on some of those mail order envelopes I've seen, there are some amazing artists out there in what Wissinoming calls "Deadland." Taking a cue from good ole Wiss, I'll sign off with - Have a good night out there Deadland!

At the risk of mortally wounding the horse with yet another blow, can we get more views of what we're getting since Relix had their two pictures a week ago? If they're still in the process of being manufactured and going through finalizing the design and waiting on the book to be printed, bound, etc., can we simply have that as an update? It's now been 90 days since the announcement of a box in the works for 3 years. Yes, I'm fixated on seeing it, but I imagine I'm not the only one.

These are their words, and I don't think it's whining to ask that they be lived up to within a 3 month period. If you want to call that whining, great. I'm not sure what you're quite so thankful for. I'm appreciative that this product is being sold, but I paid for it, and it's very expensive, and I don't believe I'm alone in wishing we actually got some insight inside the box. I'm grateful for the PRODUCT I HAVE PURCHASED, I just would like to see it. 21 songs and 2 pictures is barely scratching the surface, as evidenced by many posts. I'm sorry if that offends you, but I guess you'll have to deal with that disappointment.

$700 in nothing to sneeze at, at least for me. We would like to see how the box is opened, the CDs are packaged, the cover of the book, the book opened to almost any page, and the 7" single - and does it have a custom printed sleeve? The scroll, and any other items I forgot to mention. By showing us the contents, we will know we have bought, and we will make the judgements. For those who had to cancel, this is what the had to give up, and they will make the judgements. For those who passed on this offer they'll see what they missed, and judging what they see, maybe they'll try to buy one on one of those "secondary" markets, and probably at a higher price. SHOW US MORE BEFORE IT SHIPS!

It's embarrassing to most Deadheads I know and myself that your purchase comes with demands. You got a list of every show, bunch of killer streams, couple pics. Sell yours for an inflated price because your angry, please. I know I won't. Is there any bands from the sixties (or any era) who archive, remaster, inform, and generally cater to their fan base for 50 years like ours? Haven't you seen enough? Guess not. I was trying to let Norman, Lemieux, MaryE, all the folks at dead.net know that some of us are really really Grateful , and that when we buy something it doesn't have to be tethered to us thinking we're the captain. Do you love or do things for others without expecting something back? I always have felt that everything the Grateful Dead has given and taught me will never be re paid Peace

I posted the same thoughts a week ago- to lay out this amount of cash and then not have the promises kept months latter doesn't give me a good feeling. Why the complete radio silence? Communication is key to keeping your customers satisfied, and although we're all fans, we also choose to support the band by laying out the cash.Since the Rhino deal expires soon, perhaps we're starting to see some cracks in the relationship. Not a good way to treat loyal fans at all. Crap on people, and eventually they leave you.

Especially when compared to the Europe release. The Europe 72 release was unlike anything we had ever seen (more than Fillmore '69, more than the Winterland boxes). They practically referred to it as a science experiment, as a prototype for how things could be in the future. Hell- they weren't even sure the thing would sell, so they needed to get commitments early so they knew it was worth finishing! Crazy talk! They did a really good job of keeping everyone involved and updated throughout the process, and this feels much much much different than Europe.

I thought we would get more updates on this box.... Pictures, videos, maybe even another seaside chat that was mostly wind sounds. I felt cheated for a moment. But now, I don't want to see what's in the box on a screen... I want to get my grubby little hands on it and rip it open like a Christmas gift when I was 5. Only 2 weeks away... We waited this long.... Ain't suspense great? (Think of a show that you traveled long to see... Aren't you glad the set list wasn't posted on the internet for you to read in the lot???)

However, I suspect my fallibility is somewhat akin to the currently intoxicating - and predictably regrettable - seduction Iowa voters are experiencing under sway of The Donald's force of personality in a political vacuum. Or, in the words of Rhett Butler: "Scarlett, I've paid my 700 Confederate clams, Sherman's crossed the Mason-Dixon, and with regard to a video teaser of The 30, 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn'". And with that, it's officially one sentence past bedtime./peace, K

I kind of like the consecutive show thing especially when the band's hot or it's professionally recorded like most of the boxes have been...the 2 1990's were and the 1972 was...not sure about the others...I guess they were to a degree...but really couldn't say any of the releases are wastes...and then you say well you have most of these songs again and again...you do but there's little, subtle changes sometimes major changes sometimes there's differences keith godcheaux piano versus others...the most dangerous job in rock and roll the keyboard player for the grateful dead who had 3-4 casualties...to answer a question down below we get charged the day it ships then you have so many days to pay depending on your billing cycle or if your going to give blood, work a 2nd job for awhile...it would be a lot easier if we just listened to the grateful dead and nobody else.

Somebody, please correct me if my assumptions are wrong, but I don't believe there is any reason to hope for early shipment of this box. Regardless of being "sold out," no previous releases have shipped early. At least, no earlier than would be necessary to meet possible delivery on the release date. In recent memory it has become customary to see international customers getting their shipping notices first and "early" -- a day or two prior to the official release date. Like most everything from inside the machine of GDM, that practice has never been explained, but I think many of us have assumed it was a small gesture of fairness given the significantly greater shipping times (and expenses!) involved for our friends in foreign lands. If you're in the USA you probably shouldn't expect to see a shipping notice before the 17th would be my bet.

If you are changing your mode of payment contact customer service now if you want to preempt potential headaches. I just talked to customer service about an issue unrelated and I think confirming your credit card would not hurt (even if you are just the nervous type). The representative said they are prepping for a deluge of calls because they are close to charging cards. I guess an email should be going out soon as well requesting those that have made changes to contact customer service with updates immediately. If you have not changed anything you should be golden.

Not to initiate a deluge of problems, but I had to change my credit card for this purchase. Customer service said that there's no way to change the order to reflect a different card and that I should cancel and buy again. How this happens now is anyone's guess I suppose.

has always been an issue with some of these releases. One must also remember that some of these recordings are over 40 years old, so one can only hope that they can clean them up as best as possible. I prefer the 24 track recordings over the 2 track mixes or even the 16 track that was e72. The first box of spring 90 was 2 track if I remember correctly and I read several complaints ie sound quality on that box. I did not purchase that box but I did get a copy of 90 box 2, in 24 track and superb sound quality. One can only hope for the price of this box that they will give us the best sound they can. I am anxiously awaiting this behemoth box to enjoy for the holidays.

I was under the impression that changing cards is still possible, but I am not in that boat and I don't know. Sounds like you have different information than myself. I'd try Alex B. in Customer Service, he is very helpful.

I had a case of credit card fraud so had to cancel my card. Customer service told me my only option was to cancel my order and reorder the box. Annoyingly backwards, what if this was something that had sold out? Get screwed out of something because you were a victim of thievery? I can't think of any other website that doesn't have the ability to change payment methods on a pre-ordered item. Pathetic.

While luckily I have never tried to do it, Dead.net has proven that it is pretty much impossible to change your order once you place it. Address change? Nope. Payment change? Nope. Basically they make you cancel your order and place a new one. Which is bad enough, but obviously impossible on items that have sold out. I mean, this is the 21st century. Jeffrey Norman can take a crappy, moldy, damaged tape and make it sound like it was recorded yesterday with the most modern equipment available, but Dead.net customer service cannot type in an order change! Pretty friggin' sad. Rock on

I wish you all would quit talking about all this credit card/fraudulent activity/change order nonsense... Y'all are making me paranoid that my order won't show up.... And I've not even had any issues with ID theft or credit fraud in my recent past (knock on wood).

I'm not sure where you get the idea the US dollar is dropping. It has been rising for several years. I just checked it's at 1.42 for the Australian dollar and other currencies show a similar strength vs. a few years ago

Yup. Just got this too. Address and card info looks good. It also looks like if there was a problem (like insufficient funds) it will only delay shipping and not cancel. Everybody take a deep breath (or another step back!). It will be fine.

chilli must be in oz, and i'm singing his dollar blues too. 'twas worth $1.10 US five years ago, now just US70 cents. that means the big box now costs $995 aussies. when it drops further in the next coupla weeks, it'll put the box cost over $1000 aussies, a significant sum 'cos it'll then be subject to heavy import duties. goddamn where i declare! guess there's nothing i can do but smile, smile, smile... 'cos, i'm getting it way cheaper than the current asking price on ebay of US1,400, or US1,349 'as new' - LOL!

Yeah the vagaries of international commerce. Of course it's not all bad if your employer exports but the box definitely painful.

Just a few weeks ago I realised the credit card I used to order the box had been cancelled back in late June so I called customer service and they told me they can't access any credit card info but cancelled my first order and reordered it. Same amounts and same discount on international shipping. It was painless. Just glad I remembered when I did. At least when I woke up today I had the email about charging my card on the 9th. How far will the dollar go in a mere 7 days? I'd forgotten the import tax on anything over $1000 AUD, thanks for that ozdh. This is the box that keeps on giving. :) @snafu Looks like I am thinking ass backwards.Yes you are correct the US dollar is rising the Aussie dollar is dropping which costs me more when I order from the states. Today 1USD = 1.41943AUD. So 1AUD = .70451USD

September 9th, or is it PAY DAY for Rhino/dead.net. WOW that's really gonna mess up the DC (Daily Countdown) but who's complaining? So tomorrow for the countdown I will make sure I adjust it to reflect either a Sept 9th ship date OR a Sept 18th ship date. I used an AMEX prepaid card so I'm good as I made a deposit yesterday & I will NOT use it until I have 30 Trips in hand & payment has been debited from the account. To; THE POWERS THAT BE(known as TPTB) We've waited long enough START SHIPPING!!!! As Fall approaches the COLD, RAIN & SNOW of winter will soon be upon us, as we hibernate we'll need listening & reading material 30 Trips Around The Sun has BOTH. It's going to be a hazy shade of winter UNLESS you guys/gals START SHIPPING!! On the other hand some of us here on this forum may want to take a 30 Trips Around The Sun vacation however that can't happen UNLESS you folks START SHIPPING!! HAPPY WEDNESDAY NIGHT, DEADLAND!!!!!!!

If you live east of the Mississippi River , don't miss a Joe Russos Almost Dead show . Southeastern swing for first time, all musicians are top shelf. Sorry if this isn't " the place" but that Cumberland strength reminded me of how those guys kill that song too. NYE run should be epic.

If anyone has Dave's Picks 1 through 5 you want to trade, I am looking to trade for some of the 30 Trips CDs from 1979 - 1995. PM if interested.
