"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Thanks to all who have sent me private messages for your kind words and support! Very awesome. There are more than messages than I have time to reply to at this moment, but want to express my appreciation for your support. We all love this band and the vast majority of folks are respectful to them as well as those who work for them, by simply being honest and not taking or giving away something that legally doesn't belong to them. By showing simple respect and courtesy to tptb, both here in their house, and elsewhere, we as fans can continue to look forward to many years of new releases by tptb. Often times, doing the RIGHT thing isn't popular in certain circles. Doing the right thing, being honest and being respectful yields the greatest rewards in life. Thank you again! There are many many awesome people here.

I finally finished burning all of the disks except for the 2 I received that had big cracks in them. As I figured they were unreadable and just made that tell-tale clicking/grinding noise. Disk 1 of the 75’ show and disk 2 of the 94’ show. The cracks were almost identical in length going from the inside outward. I wanted to burn them all to make sure none of the others had any issues before I contacted customer service. Just got off the phone with cs and I have officially been put on the Dr. Rhino shit be messed up list. I was told that I would be contacted via email within a couple of weeks. Amy said they were compiling a list of all the issues being reported. I haven’t seen anyone report here that they had any issues with their cases. I guess there was one person who said they had a spine splice. I don’t have that but about 9 of my cases had some smudging/spotting/smearing. Some just had a few minor spots but 2 or 3 had quite a few spots front and back. Is anyone else seeing this? I didn’t report it to customer service but when the good dr. reaches out I may ask for some replacements. Normally I wouldn’t bother but since they will be sending me 2 disks anyway it won’t hurt them any to toss in some empty cases.

Apparently I wasn't sharp enough to realize that one of the moons on the box lid was a new moon. Thanks for setting me straight, Jeffsmith. Kind of cool how the names of the earliest band members start in "Spring." It would have been nice if Keith and Donna's names were together on the same side of the box but Keith and TC are the only names on the "Fall" side and they each joined the band in the Fall. Coincidence, or was that planned? Also, I'm a little surprised Bruce's name is not on the box. He was a member for about as long as TC. It's not a big deal but I'm curious about how that decision was made. Listened to the '84 show the last two nights and it sounds great. I'm really enjoying skipping around and taking my time with the shows.

Thanks to Alain, JimInMD, antonjo & Born Cross Eyed for giving me your opinions on the Europe 72 Book. Sounds like everyone thinks it's a good one. Now I just have to find one. I missed out on the Trunk and have the music only edition. Glad to hear the Boxes are showing up around the World. Feeling for those who have not received theirs yet. Your patience is being tested "Grately", but hopefully it is just around the corner. So far, I've not been contacted by anyone from Dead.net or Rhino, with a resolution for the "name panel" error on my 30 Trips Box (it has 2 "T.C. Keith" panels and no "Jerry Bob Pig" panel). Have others with damage/defective Boxes received any definitive resolution to their Box issues? If so, from whom did the resolution come?

Hello all I've watched this discussion while figuring out how to post. I love it and the box; it looks so much better than the trunk(which I thought was cheaply made and sold on Ebay for a profit and the music only, and spring of 1990(mine came jacked up with no option of a new box) Spacebrother I really like your insight of the 80's I try to love it but it's not there yet. 68 to 79 from the releases is my priority. have a bucket list of the complete 69 filmore, and yes I skipped 90 too. I love the conversation here in general. thank you for all your conversations and opinions this forum is awesome.Other than Barton Hall I do not visit archives. hopefully I fit in. dave

I guess they had a few cancellations. There's going to be more available in the next month as folks whose credit cards don't process for any reason may either miss the call from Dead.net, or change their mind on purchasing it. You figure there will be at least a small percentage of those situations that will make some units available.

Sorry for the break in subject,,but. Someone a while back mentioned a 24 cd Duke Ellington collection (BTW - 200 bucks used, 600 new), the set sounded great. I found it available thru my world wide library lookup, at long last it got to my local library and I checked it out for $2.50. Sucked it all in. A very nice set, my thanks go out to whoever brought up the subject. This will be great Sunday morning breakfast music.

Tonight on Showtime the Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church rockumentary premieres, in fact it's on the air right now! I am not a subscriber and when I called the cable company this afternoon I was told I could sign up for the one time and then cancel later. I knew I was not going to get home from work in time tonight, so I opted out. I checked the program schedule and saw that it will air on various other dates in the month of September. I will probably sign up for the Sept. 10th @9:25 pm EDT airing, which is the day after our cc's should be charged for the Box. Something for us Heads to consider as we await Shipment Day!

Hello you kind folks. I, like the rest of you, have been eagerly awaiting for this box set. For myself, San Diego 73 and Lindley 75 are the shows i am most excited about. I am not sure if dead.net plans on making this shippment require a signature or not, so i changed the shipping address to my work address to assure someone will be there when it arrives. I plan on taking some time off work when it comes in to listen to it... am i completely crazy? I have been on a non stop around the clock Summer of 82 binge lately, so to change things up i think I will be listening to Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out tonight.

I'm Still looking for Dave's Picks 1 ?? lots for trade.. Anyone going to LOCKN on Thurs -Sun ? I'm pretty sure I will travel for the event.. Pretty much winging it like Chicago and that worked out well.. Late last night or early this AM Sirius had on 7.3.15 Soldier Field. It was cool to hear again for the first time since event.. Still same opinion,, nearly flawless event that weekend with almost perfect outcome. The music grade for me was High B Low A,, Mickey and Billy being my favorite and Drums Space were sweet.. With "Mountains of The Moon" and "Cassidy" as a couple other standouts.

If a copy of DAP 1 will do, I can help. Yes, me and a bunch of us are going to Lockn, leaving Wednesday. We fly into Raliegh and will drive to Lynchburg. My one buddy lives in Raliegh and my other buddy lives in a little town right next to Lynchburg. We went last year and it was great. Hope it will be as good this year since we're all taking our wives this year. It's a long 4 days. Great lineup again. Anyone looking for me there try 214-663-4309. I'll be up against the fence just behind VIP/Soundboard. And then we come home for "THE BOX"!

No bites. This discovery of "extra" box sets by the good folks at dead.net has really put a kink into my entrepreneurship. Speaking of which, I saw a couple of guys this week had sold 30 Trips for over $1100 for a new set. I have a feeling they're dolling out refunds now that sets are available here again. I do have some good deals for some "subsets" of the box listed.

Correction -NO Body Has a copy. That was my point. we just have reservations for a copy. From a company that apparently has service issues. I've never had a single issue with Rhino- they've been perfect for me. But I've read a lot about problems on this forum. I just think it would be nice if pushes for a sell-out, from Rhino or entrepreneurs, would come from after the damn thing ships.

ok whatever, I get it now - you're pissed at KeithFan because he said he's rooting for a sellout. actually I don't get it. why would you care if it sells out before it reaches your door, as long as you have a copy reserved. calling a guy low class because he put up some CDs for sale is itself low class - particularly when it's irrelevant to you. he's a pretty cool dude if you knew him. i needed DP 28 and he said he'd help me out, then realized his burner didn't work and actually mailed me his original copy and said mail it back when i'm done. and to boot, his ebay add actually directs people to dead.net to buy it for it less. you're the only low class i smell around here. well, and your counterpart wadeocu.

yes, good call. I'd be very happy with pretty much any release from 1979-82 for the next Dave's. Not keen on any boxes though, for a while. Not even AK 80 (and probably 70% of the calls you've seen for that have been from me, and 25% from deadegad, ha). If they released AK 80 now I think I'd cry - cause boxzilla, of course. BTW, though I'm obviously excited about most of the shows in 30Trips, the 79-85 chunk may be the biggest draw for me. To finally have officially releases shows from 84 - and even 86, very exciting. One caveat: I emailed Dave some days ago, asking if the shows would each have their own individual case (a la Spring90). No response - which is uncharacteristic. And it frankly worries me a tad. The silence on the inner workings of the Box, along with the delay on the USB, has me thinking something may be very wrong in Rhinoland.

For a small box: The Ark: 1969. The only reason these shows haven't been released is because there just so happens to be an even better run that was multi-track recorded 2 months earlier. The back-up choices would be Felt Forum '71 or Orpheum '76. A distant 4th would be 6/28, 6/30, and 7/1/85. Too bad about 2/24/74 being released as a DaP, as the 3 show run would have done well. I'd also like a complete 2/11-14/70 set, despite the presence of DP4 and Bear's. It's all in the Vault, and these shows are too historic to be chopped up the way they were. However, since the meat is already out there, (same goes for Winterland '74 and Fillmore East '71) I'd prefer the others come out first. For a huge one: The Complete Fall '73, although the releases of 10/19, 11/9-11, 11/14, 11/17, 11/21, 11/30, 12/2, 12/10, and 12/19 make me feel less certain about this one. If not the Fall, I'm perfectly happy getting Summer '73, which has to be the most underrepresented era of Dead music when one takes the quality into account. I'm not sure much else warrants a more than 6 show set; most of the heavy hitters from Summer '74 have been released, and the Vault presence of Fall '72 shows is spotty.

My first show was 9/6/79 at MSG. Caught the Spectrum shows in Nov '79 as well. Love that era. As for a new box, I'd say: Red Rocks '78 Boston '76 Spring '82 All of Fillmore '71 Just my dreams here. :)

I have a Major important question about the USB Will the 2nd sets of these shows run uninterrupted ? CDs fade out at end of disk two Fading back into disk three..... l hate that, can't sit back and chill to a second set that way! The reason I bought the USB is so there would be no breaks in the middle of the sets like the CDs will obviously be. This is probably a major issue for all people buying the USB (Even though there is only 1,000 of us) We don't get the booklet or the fancy box But that's not a problem, if they run uninterrupted I did not want the CDs for that reason (and storage too) as well as wanting 24/96 resolution (sweet) Has this question been brought up by anyone? and I hope you guys were smart enough to master the USB as uninterrupted shows, unlike the CDs (more work for you guys but you are charging enough for this package now dubbed "BOXILLA") I truly will be disappointed if there is breaks in the middle of a set This issue will be a major problem....I'll want my money back if they are these interruptions, so....... Look forward to a response P.S. I've sent numerous emails to this site and I still can't get a straight response Bad business gang! Thomas A. Violagis Jr.

I'd LOVE to see a box of spring '82, 4-19 is one of my favorites, and 4-12 is very underrated IMO. As for the 30 Trips USB, I'm pretty confident the sets will run uninterrupted. I also ordered the USB version. If, for some reason, there are fades, there are ways to rejoin the halves with editing software. I'd be happy to help if this turns out to be the case.

I know the Download Series and the downloaded version of the Road Trips series has the fades that you get with the CDs. I think they actually feel this is preferable for customers (and to be honest, I prefer it), because it allows you to burn the music to CD and fade out like a regular CD.

Does anyone know if there are multi-track masters in the vault from the 70s that have not been released, other than these runs, which produced Three From The Vault, Ladies & Gentlemen, and Movie Soundtrack: * Port Chester February 18-24 1971 * Fillmore East April 25-29 1971 * Winterland October 16-20 1974 I would be thrilled to have a multi-track box set from 1973, if the masters exist. Also, does anyone know if anything from 1977 was recorded on the multi-track? I'm pretty sure everything that's been released has been two-track (albeit, great sounding two-track). I believe this is the complete list of multi-track releases, but am I missing any? * Live Dead * Skull and Roses * Fillmore West Complete * One, Two, and Three From the Vault * Europe '72 Complete * Sunshine Daydream * Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack * Steal Your Face * Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 * Rocking The Cradle: Egypt '78 * The Closing of Winterland Live at the Fillmore East 1969? I forget on that one...

Thanks for the shout out for the MSG show, 36 years ago today. I was there also and I was the first to mention the awesome sound Steve Parish's motorcycle added to the drums. We could hear it, or we sure thought we did, but could not see it until we were on our way out and walked behind the stage and actually saw it. You know how it is. When you are under the influence you sometimes think you hear something that really is not there, but that was not the case this time. Just too much! I would love to see a minibox of those '79 MSG shows. Rock on

OMG - decisions, decisions......do I buy a second set for investment purposes...... I've seen them listed as $1150-$1375 on ebay with a lot of watchers and shows going for 50-75 a pop.... Could make enough back here to cover my costs of a set.... Arrrggghhhhh...decisions, decisions,,,,,,,,

That would be a great box if I don't say so myself. . .. For the umpteenth time. Yeah hbob the roar of that motorcycle during drums>space is awesome stuff! Thanks for reminding me, us. These are Brent's First MSG-NYC shows and the band: They Came, They Saw, They Conquered! So they were historic and this Box fits with demands for Brent and 80s(almost). Likewise it is small enough which keeps it affordable. Dave . . .. Think about it. And let me plug Claney's companion to MSG Sept 1979 box: Alaska 1980! There a lot of worthy contenders here.
