I was reading Zuckfun's commie comment just as that annoying PCMatic commercial was on.. The one where the CEO threatened that if we don't buy PC Matic right now, extortion virus' from Mother Russia will steal our files, encrypt them and demand money to get them back. Then it clicked.. this site is obviously not protected by PCMatic and now we have to wait an extra month for our box. Its so obvious now.. it is a communist conspiracy! Brilliant observation, Zuck.. way to put it all together and make it clear for the rest of us. ok, problem solved. Back to the music. 5/20/73 is playing in my house, deep into the rockin' second set jam as I write this. Perhaps it explains why I'm not bothered by all this. One Edit: Bobaloo.. great Louis-Auguste analogy with just a hint of Lord of the Flies. Lets hope when they stormed the castle they saved us a couple bottles of vintage Bordeaux. Split it with ya.

What if peeps don't like the way the set is put together after they receive it and open it up. Can it be returned? I'm a bit vague on the return policy.

I remember a cool story from Steve Parrish's book. Great jazz drummer Paul Humphrey showed up to Legion of Mary gig wearing an outfit from his work with Lawrence Welk band that afternoon. He asked, "what will the band be wearing for the gig?" Parrish told him "they're wearin what they're wearin man!" My attitude is it ships when it ships. This is the Grateful Dead Box, not a KISS retrospective (thank goodness.) The money is spent, the box was overpriced, and it ships when it ships. I'll enjoy it regardless. I would appreciate it if Rhino gave us 128k downloadable files for the car, work, and the like. I have excellent audio equipment, I can wait for the CD quality music to listen on that system. Getting the music and packaging right is priority one. All else I am less concerned with.

if you don't like it but its not defective then it's ebay. if they let you return nondefective product, some people would rip the CDs and then return the box for a refund.

On top of this news I now get a call from my bank to say they've cancelled my card after detecting fraudulent use - someone trying to pay Ameristayinn online. Worrying, given that I'm not in the States and Dead.net is the only place in the US that has my card details... All just in time to screw up payment for the box set going through next week. Sigh...

That it was exactly one year ago today that I received Spring 1990 2. My how time flies. I guess it's time to revisit that one.

I want to apologize for my rant last night. As a single person my best friend/child Poster had to go to Vet for surgery yesterday and the email was last straw to a terrible day. I know that Dead.net/Rhino do everything possible to bring us the very best quality for eargasms to the brain. MY dog has completed he's procedures and was able to return home this evening to my enjoyment. I am terribly sorry for my rant and will what impatiently for this. Yes I'm sad my birthday present will not get here till October but I thank Dead.not/Rhino for giving me access to the files. Does this mean the USB is obsolete other than that kick ass looking flash drive? we all our getting files.

The USB's are high-def audio (24 bit / 96 kh) files. The download are low grade MP3's. I would argue the MP3's are useless, not the high def files. I don't plan to listen to the MP3's and will wait a month for the real deal. I bet I am not alone in that. To be honest, I have listened to the sdbds for most of these shows before, I can wait for the cleaned up, hi fidelity versions. hey.. thanks for the positive tone on your last post. None of us are happy about the delay. Its one of those things that it is what it is.

@ Claney, I've always used the word chuffed as a good thing,like being stoked, like "Even though there are some manufacturing delays, I'm chuffed that i'm getting this box set before the end of the year." I'm chuffed i only paid 699 dollars and 98 cents, it looks like others paid $700. I'm chuffed i got another 7 days to put off telling my wife i paid 699.98 for more Grateful Dead shows.

Once your paid up they will send you a link to look at PDF pictures of the enclosed book and files to listen to of the 30 concerts...I don't think they said anything about mp3 files to download you listen to it via your computer you won't have any hard copy...until they ship in mid October...I didn't know they were doing that until I read some of the posts on here...but that happens once your paid up...it's something of a constellation but i'd still be worried until the box does come I hope it doesn't become the replacement...which reminds me it'll be sick to get a dave's pick right behind this mammoth of a box set...when does the last dave's pick come? then you have to order another year if you want to keep getting them...wow being a grateful dead fan is a serious commitment...not to sound like an employee of the grateful dead but they are the ultimate live band because they were never slaves to being samey samey and it makes listening to their live stuff that much more likely...you couldn't do this with other bands...I know a lot of people are pissed off right now and it does hurt knowing just in a week we could've had these monsters instead we're going to be just paying for these monsters...then Christmas comes...it's got to be a grateful dead Christmas.

I am glad that they are taking the time to resolve whatever issue(s) they had with production. The cost and size of this monstrosity make this deserving of exceeding all expectations. The microscopes will be at full operational capacity with the delay.

Fluffua, I understand your frustration and will add that your post yesterday put a smile on my face; actually, I literally laughed out loud. Not to be laughing AT you but after your long, angry rant you said something like, 'Sorry to all those I offended.' Somehow that just struck me as funny since most usually say, 'sorry if I offended anyone.' You just seemed to assume you were offending many and I got a chuckle out of it. It just seemed particularly polite after all that vitriol. Anyway, check your PM. Jim, I too will probably not listen to the MP3s. That would be really anticlimactic after spending weeks deciding on how to listen to this set (chronologically or just dive straight into Lindley Meadows or San Diego '73?) I listen to the archive on the computer fairly often but given the choice, I prefer "serious" listening on the big stereo.

Rdevil & Maryland Jim, I know what you mean about waiting for the discs, and a book I can turn the pages of while I Iisten.... It's my plan, too, to hold out, but will I really, knowing now I can actually burn a set or two onto cd-r for a drive-to-work soundtrack. (Denver '73 RT has been it the last two mornings...that Playin > El Paso > Playin > Wharf Rat > Playin sandwich is just as stellar as I'd remembered.) I think what excites me most about the consolation link is that we're now days away from knowing the complete setlist of 7/03/66, whether I listen to it yet or not. No plans to go the chronological distance ~ I've been waiting too long for mid-80's, and I can't wait to hear 4/15/70 & 3/17/71 ~ but that'll probably be the first one I spin.

I don't think that set list is complete he had to leave off some songs they seem a little short for the most part not all of them...I think the problem is they left a name off of the box and now they have to redo the boxes...it would be nice if they included Santa Monica 2015

I just finished reading the book "Grateful Dead '77 - The Rise of Terrapin Nation," which does a bang of job of (obsessively) reviewing every show from '77 and really analyzing what makes the year so special. After being reminded here that the show from '77 in the We'll-get-it-soon-so-stop-freakin' Box is from 4-25, I realize the author wrote no review of 4-25. I have what I believe are the best available recordings from every show in '77 and this one probably gets the fewest plays. Why? Because it's a somewhat bearable audience recording in a year when most shows were widely available as soundboards, I suppose. So, why do I mention this? I decided to take the rusty audience for a ride and I stumbled across an absolute revelation of a jam! PLEASE do yourselves a favor and go to https://archive.org/details/gd77-04-25.aud.goodbear.259.sbeok.shnf, and spend 5 minutes listening to the jam out of Wharf Rat. It's drop dead gorgeous and mysterious, concluding with a bit of a Tiger Jam at the end before becoming a Playin' Reprise. The interplay is magnificent.By the way... the rest of the show is no slouch. An outstanding Scarlet-Fire and Playin'. A deep, laid back vibe in this show. Quite stony sounding. I can't f'in wait to hear the new release when the box comes! It could earn the first listen of all the shows for me.

Chuff - that's the word we use to describe a noise my black lab makes when he's trying to get us to pay attention; sounds kind of like a sneeze, but deliberate and not as wet. You lab owners know what I mean. Is there a better post-hiatus Other One than Dick's Picks 18? It was my first and only for a long time, so I'm not sure if my brain is subconsciously biased toward it, but I just can't seem to find one that comes close (the short one that's integrated with Dark Star on Closing of Winterland is close, but it's the other Other One I knew early on in my Dead following). I've been whoring around '71 the past few days. The Dark Stars are just unreal, all of them - Ladies & Gentlemen (way better than I remembered), Port Chester 2/18, DaP 3 (one of Keith's first shows); and of course DP 2 is an oldie but goodie. The 10/26 show from the Download Series has Keith playing some organ - kind of interesting, I never noticed it before, but then, I haven't listened to this one too many times. The Wikipedia write-up on DP 35 indicates that it contains most of the 8/24/71 show, but not all of it - does anyone know what's missing from 8/24 on DP 35? There seems to be some confusion on the set list sites I've Googled as well.

Not sure why there isn't a good FM SBD recording of this one on the Archive, I've had this show on DVD for a while, and the source is a good FM SBD. It's a very good show, but one of the ones for this box where I scratched my head at its inclusion out of all the unreleased '77 shows. Even more puzzling as Dave recently mentioned how close 5/26 was to release several times over the years. Maybe this is a way to get the SBD out there for a show Dave thinks deserves its due, and it isn't quite the level of a Dave's Pick, but fits in well alongside the "tent-pole shows". I'm interested in 10/3/76 for the same reason, as the AUD wasn't blowing me away, so maybe there's something more there with a higher quality recording...

All that I am asking for is $700 gold dollars A handful of these boxes have already transacted via eBay -- 4 in the range of $1400-$1150 will be delivered "sealed" and 1 at something under $850 will be "like new, just gonna listen to a few things first." That'll hurt if those folks find out there are still copies left here at $700. If a good portion of the 30-odd copies still here are due to cancellations, I think it'd be foolish not to buy one if you can scratch it together. You won't be able to touch it later. I agree think dead.net fell down a little on this process, but NOT on the delay: I think they are trying to make the item perfect for us and have found something (or things) that need attention and that they feel can be fixed in 30 days. That sounds very good to me. They have offered a few things to compensate during the delay. The contents of the book is a not inconsiderable thing IMO. I will definitely be all over that! A chance to hear anything you want from the box via internet is not something I'll be indulging in, but I think it also is a decent way to try to tide some heads over in the interim. For obvious reasons, they couldn't send everyone some extra thing in the interim period. Where they did fall down a bit is in creating an expectation that much would be revealed about the box. While that's a problem, it's also true that it's nothing new to this box; it's happened before. To some, even that's welcome as additional surprise in opening it up. Maybe dead.net could put up a shot of the custom outer shipping box it's bound to use! It seems doubtful to me that the individual CD packaging will be so awful that I'd regret owning the thing. If I ever was concerned about the packaging of the discs anyway, I'd do what I always do: make a backup copy and listen to that til I lose it or it goes bad. I never listen to the original discs of the FW69 set for example. To me it's no big deal: I trust that like most of these affairs in the past, they are going to deliver something that's regarded by everyone who ends up with one as having been well worth the money. That's a fair statement because resales tell the tale -- you generally have to pay retail, or more -- often, MUCH more -- to ever get a chance again at getting one: Europe 72 box, Fillmore West box. If anyone out there doesn't think it's worth the money, they sell, at retail or much higher, and someone else ends up with it. If you were a betting person, you'd be a damn poor one if you bet against this thing being worth the $700 you laid out. Cancel? Loser bet.

To be clear that argument is not "capitalist" in nature. Not saying the market should rule. Just observing that if someone is considering buying, they are considering that it might be worth it to them. I'm saying: if you think it could possibly be "worth it" to you, it WILL be. Just the odds.

If I remember correctly with previous boxes, when the contents are not revealed that is usually a sign of something added that is meant to be a surprise - like the coin or dice in the Spring 1990 boxes.

It's almost cute in hindsight, they were so timid! "Do you think people will even buy 10,000 of these things? No friggin way! It's 10 goddamn discs --" "11 with the bonus, sir." Second - still no reply from Dave or Dr. Rhino to a VERY basic question: Will the shows have individual packaging. I am not even asking if it is digipacks, or whatever. They can't even give me the courtesy of a reply that says, "Sorry, we can't tell you." So you know what? Now I am pissed. Sorry to be negative. EDIT: I want to point out, I've no intention of selling these individually, that is not why I care. I just like my shows to each have their own case, to store on a shelf, bring in the car, etc. without that, I'll settle for streaming or downloads some day.

Just as likely, not. 4-disc condensation vs individual shows. Notice that the FW69 condensation was in slip sleeves, but the actual set was a modified digipak design.

Just wanted to say to thank you to the families that sacrificed and lost so much as a result of 9/11. On a brighter note, today is Mickey's 71st. I remember the 9/11/87 show where Phil said "Today's Mickey's birthday, happy birthday Mick." The band was playing happy birthday. Guess they will never release that show as the royalties on Happy Birthday would be huge. Or, I guess they could cut it off and start at Sugar Mag.

From that pic if that Definitive Live Story 4 disc package IS similar to May77... Maybe more like some multi-DVD sets where two discs are on each side of the page in overlapping snap-in packs... Though I'd say again, don't think whatever it is bodes of similarity to the 30 Trips box. The DLS is a condensation of multiple shows with, we have been told, individual Jesse Jarnow penned notes for each single song. The concept of putting that into a package with 4 discs (DLS) just doesn't seem parallel to the concept of putting individual shows -- of varying discs length -- into a package of shows by year. I don't mean to put down anyone's idea of what might be inside. I have no special info. Could easily be wrong. But still don't see that A) there's reason to think there will be some awful, shoddy packaging that detracts from the reality of 30 individual shows, or that B) the 4CD packaging tells us anything, really, other than that there will be a unitary cover concept of skull sun surrounded by planetary signs. (I think it's a pretty cool cover! I also notice that the box set reveal photos detail no further resemblance to anything we see from Definitive Live story...) It's gonna be awesome folks. Know it in your bones. Don't regret.

The Warlocks box, The Spring 1977 box, the Winterland 73 & Winterland 77 boxes. The individual digipak per show is only found in the Fillmore 1969 and Europe 72 boxes. You could also count the Studio box sets, but they are not really archival releases.

I am planning on stopping next Thursday at my local CD store to pick up the 4 CD set. Wasn't going to buy it because I opted for the big box, but now I am going to pick it up. It's not released until Friday but the local CD store gets all new releases a day or two early.

The Winterland boxes definitely have separate, individual show cases within. As does Spring77 -- in that case they aren't digipaks, but that doesn't invalidate the question (which I didn't raise, but tried to answer): What has NOT had individual show cases? Everything but Warlocks does.

Need it just for Jarnow's commentary. Was going to wait. Now have to get it before the box set.

Hmmmm. It's interesting that the track listing Fennario posted lists the CDs in order, up to 80 - as if they're all one contiguous set packaged in some kind of big binder, as opposed to packaged as individual shows like E72 (i.e. Show 1, CDs 1,2,3,4 Show 2, CDs 1,2,3 etc). I hope that's not how it pans out. I'd rather see each show packaged individually. Kayak Guy - the Winterland '73 and '77 boxes, as well as May '77 have individual packages for the shows.

Hmmm. I was hoping there would be more surprises in the earlier shows, like an extra set to 10/20/68 or 11/10/67. As far as I can tell, the only things that are news are the complete setlist to 7/3/66 and the China Rider on 4/15/70. They also kept the big jam of 11/14/73 intact by moving the end of the show to the previous disc. Also, we're getting Seastones from 9/18/74, it seems.

I have a feeling the delay is not so much about fixing something not quite right, or some breakdown in the manufacturing process (like a widget wasn't ready on time). I have a feeling the problem is that they're going to lose money on shipping if they don't get them all out the door in one bulk amount. And I think they discovered that there are too many changes in credit card information at the last minute to get 6500 orders processed and ready to ship on September 18th. What they are proposing to do now is charge everyone on the 17th, and then that gives them a month to catch up with people to get their credit cards charged, put any cancellations back on the shelf for sale (which will now go through immediately), and get the boxes loaded up on a skid for delivery. I know this is it, or something not far from it. The delay is something that's needed to save money, not to get it right. I guarantee they have these boxes assembled and ready to go. We'll see how many additional units become available after the 17th. A lot tells me I'm right. Call me cynical, but they've earned it.

But the work of allmusic or whoever transcribed it for them. There are not even references within the disc-by-disc to the shows! To think it likely to be a reflection of what will be in the box is a leap of (bad) faith. Is there really any doubt that the shows will be treated individually? I'm sure they will not pre-populate the Gracenote database ([yawn] -- though some will surely show up to complain -- it happens every time...)

It's the thing you suppose -- that there's no evidence for other than baseless supposition -- not the thing they're saying it is.

But how do they know the length of songs if they didn't get the info from dead.net?
