We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.
The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.
The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.
The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

KeithFan, I hope you start feeling better and wish you a speedy recovery.
It would be interesting to revisit this, it was made before the Trunk was shipped and there were certain shows where the tapes that circulated were not pristine. My guess is the ratings would tighten up a bit now that all the recordings are more or less similar in quality.
I also think there's some shows that might come in a bit higher than his top picks.
Like many have said here, I really like the DS through Caution jam from 4/8 - its stunning. I like the DS from 4/14 but the caution jam from 4/17 (and the bozo masked video portion from this show). I like the looseness and structure of the 5/4 DS a lot. I like the 5/10 Other One a bit more than 5/3, to me it has better continuity as its not broken up and has a real nice, jazzy structure to it, like bread pudding. 5/11 is a masterpiece, but I have not revisited it for some time. 4/24 is a masterpiece also and really stands out for many reasons. The whole Lyceum run is special, I find myself going to a few parts of the sleeper show 5/24, I really like the China>Rider, Playin' for example.
He picks 5/3 as his favorite overall, but I tend to like a few of the DS shows a little more.
He definitely put some time into the review and I like his rating system. His reviews are all over Arhive.org, especially the old shows but it looks like he got into it with some there and more or less disappeared.
I agree with you on the sound quality of 4/26 but lately I find myself reaching for different shows instead. Not sure why.. In truth, every time I nail down my favorite one or two shows.. I can pull another one of the shelf, put on some headphones and I have a new favorite.

Gary Far - lol - I was hoping some Yes fan would pick up on that reference. RIP Chris Squire, it was his song. Too bad they never pulled Jon back in the ring for one last show with the classic lineup (and it's not as if they can just pull in the "other" bass player at this point, because it's the one position that never had two members, ABWH / Levin not withstanding).
Jim - I also am a huge fan of 4/24 - the way part II starts with Keith's piano introduction, and that melody they kick off for the one and only time at around 9:20 - so brief, yet so memorable. My first Dark Star in retrospect. I think 5/18 and 5/23 Dark Stars are damn fine, maybe my favorites after 4/8, which I agree is unparalleled. I get a little bit lost on 5/4 and 5/11; I guess my preference is rhythm and melody over discordant space exploration (which I like in smaller doses). And then there are the Tivoli Brothers, which are a nice ride themselves, both with killer (if not opposite) segues into Sugar Magnolia. And then, I don't know about you, but I someone lump 8/27/72 in with E72 shows, I think because of the pristine multi-track sound quality, so I'll put in a kudo for 8/27/72.
Edit - by the way, also love the 5/24 Rider. Because I love 5/3 ChinaCat, and don't care for its associated Rider (with all of the vocal overdubs), I put The China Cat from 5/3 with the Rider from 5/24, and..heh...it's seamless. I don't know who to complement on that - Jeff Norman, the Grateful Dead, or myself. I'll go with myself since the prior parties are most likely unaware.

All I can say is WOW!! If the stream sounds this good I cannot wait to hear the cds.
I have been jumping all around and I am amazed at the sound quality. So far I have listened to: '66, '95, '85, '71, '94, '67, and '84. I was amazed at how good Jerry sounded on the '94 show. I saw my last show in '87 and I had been led to believe that his voice was shot by the '90's, but that certainly is not the case here.
Hats off once again to DL for finding gems from all years. He remains 'Da Man!!

...I was at that Boston Garden show and despite it being '94, it was probably one of the best shows I ever attended. Energy was up, up and well the setlist says a lot with the H>S>F opener, the well documented So Many Roads (this appeared in a '30 Days of Dead'), that Scarlet > Fire and Terrapin and yes the Stella Blue...all raucous. In total agreement, it sounds great and was such a thrill to be there in my hometown venue, no less.

Yup, saw Yes in Jul 2013, they were good with new singer, still not the same. Although Chris' base bombs were awesome. I saw (if memory serves)the opening night of ABWH at Mud Island in Memphis in 1989. Got busted taping. Ended up stage right about 10 feet from Steve Howe for about half the show as they were trying to decide whether to call the authorities. They took the tapes, gave us back the equipment and let us return to our seats.
I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and still smuggled the deck in my shorts. Kept thinking, it is about to fall out. Please let me in, come on. Got in, set-up had the meters pinging just right. Had two small shotgun Mics sticking out of a baseball cap. Friend next to me poked me, turn to the right and there is security looking. Try to grab the hat and pull it off, they motion us out of the seats. To this day I just do not understand. They fans clapped and mocked us. They were the ones that turned us in. What, were they worried everyone in the crowd was going to jail?
I bet they were shocked when we triumphantly returned. Spent some time with their tour manager, he was cool about it. Even Steve Howe came over laughing and gave us a wink. He (tour mgr) figured we were not part of professional money making bootleggers (and questioned us about that). Guess the look in our eyes gave it away and the trippy shirts we had on. I was wearing a flipped out Berzerkly shirt I got out there in 87. Great show even with the bust. Afternoon liquid, with the band opening just 30 minutes before sunset.

Gary - indeed, I am an avid collector and builder of many many sets....pretty much all original trilogy stuff...and yes...my amazing better half got me BOTH the Lego Star Destroyer AND DEATH STAR last Christmas. She was mortified but did it anyway. I have an entire 'Toy Closet' inhabited by many of these things and some Lord of the Rings stuff too...it's sad but happy - really.

Back to Year Nineteen Seventy Two for a Moment (if I may)
Oh dear lord I put on Hofheinz/Houston 11-18-72 to delve a bit further and deeper into the year and the ~25 min Playin in the Band....holy crap WTF is going on here.....the intensity lifts you out of your chair for the first 12 minutes straight, as in they never even come up for a breath. Then right at 18:21 something utterly magical happens, when Billy rips a huge drum smack after some of the only moments of almost space and god it just lifts off again into a frenzy and ON A DIME. Impressive, erupting so intensely out of almost....nothing.
Just thought I’d share my awe for consumption.

Yes, this Playin In The Band is truly AMAZING! One of my first tapes I acquired when I began to collect & trade tapes in earnest, decades ago. I remember it was a crispy lo-gen tape. It was given to me with the instructions to "learn this Playin' and you will NOT be disapointed." I can't remember if I had the whole show on these 2 tapes or not.
Lego Star Wars is my jam!
Awesome! I too am an avid AFOL and collector and builder of all things Lego SW. I have the Death Star also and it's in my daughter's room. I have 3 shelves dedicated to my SW Lego sets, they are taking over the house much to my wife's chagrin. Ha! I also build a few other sets from time to time that interest me(just put Wall-E together on Tuesday night! Great set) but mainly stay on Star Wars. Lego is so fun and good for the brain.
Still waiting for someone to make the Lego Wall of Sound and submit it to the Ideas site. If we can get 10,000 votes for the superbowl halftime show I know we could get that many for a Wall of Sound ideas set!

When talk of the Wall of Sound Box set was circulating, complete with a WOS Fathead to put on your wall behind your big boy stereo..
Someone mentioned building a WOS from lego's. Then someone chimed in and said they have GD lego's (and they do).
The funny part is the Bob Weir lego figure must have been modeled from the 1984 bobby. He is sporting shorts so short to wear them outside runs the risk of putting your name on the sex offenders registry.
Its pretty funny.. and any of us that saw some shows in the 80's remembers the short/shorts... Someone has a cruel sense of humor.

Dead Lego's
I've seen those before and they are cool. They are only moc's though. I would love to see an official licensed Lego set of the Wall of Sound. It could look similar to the Big Bang Theory set in size and scope that came out recently. If an official set came out the minifigures of the band would be much more detailed. Waiting for the ship date of this boxzilla sort of reminds me of August / September / October 1989 when we first learned the news of the new GD album, Built To Last. I was psyched to hear the news that it would be released October 31st. I don't remember when I heard the title of the new album or when I first heard that the release date would be 10/31, but the time flew fast, and that day came. I was working at a delivery job driving a van and I stopped at a record store and bought a copy of the new CD. I didn't have a CD player in the van and we didn't have stereo system at the shop, so I just had to wait those hours until I got home. At home I opened the package and put on the new CD on on my stereo. At first listen thru, I liked it very much - it was great!
Let me back up a bit, I hadn't been to a Dead show since 9/18/87 @ Madison Square Garden in NYC. (yep, this show is included in boxzilla) The scene had changed a bit, for the worse, because of In The Dark, in my humble opinion. So I sort of didn't really like going to shows as much as I once did.
For several plays I thought this album was great, then things changed and I wasn't overwhelmed with it as much and I just didn't play it as much. I use it today as a sort of thermometer. When the whole thing sounds great, I'm happy, when Little Light, Blow Away, We Can Run, Picasso Moon sound horrible, I'm in a bad mood, depressed. However, Victim & Standing are always great to hear, especially when I'm depressed. Sometimes they're mood changers.
Bottom line: October 31st.
Will you have 30 Trips Around The Sun, aka boxzilla, in you possession on 10/31 or will you be waiting on delivery? Awaiting "The Shipping Notice."

Tastebud?
Gotta admit, I was not up to speed on Tastebud from the '66 show, but yow, what a great tune! The overall excellent sound quality of the streamed material bodes well for the actual release. It's starting to sink in how these shows represent the "best of" from each year, but more than that, when taken as a whole collection, they're like time markers, clearly showing the evolution of the band through the years. (I know, duh) The more I listen, the more anxious I get to actually have these discs in my home. It seems like its been forever since I ordered this sucker!

The haunting jam out of space was Handsome Cabin Boy (with a Playin' tease coda).
I was at that one, my friend Matt spotted them setting up the extra mic during the break and we wondered who the guest was going to be.... Bob cleared that up for us in short order. When they launched into China Cat after Gimme Some Lovin', it was like the 2nd set restarting "properly" and so it felt like getting a bonus song.
The next year during summer tour, we picked up a head hitching to the next show, and he was still angry about how Bob "ordered" us to "say 'Thank you, Spencer!'" after that Gimme Some Lovin. Guess I'd been too naïve to realize how tough we deadheads had it, getting subjected to a guest musician, an extra song, and such audacious demands from Bob....
Netflix and The Other One
So I joined with Netflix as they offer a free month to start and admit I must I wanted to see the new Keith movie. It was cool, but I found the Bob Weir show The Other One, which I totally enjoyed. Saw a Harry Nillson show that I'll catch soon. Slowly but surely I'm getting dragged further into the digital universe.

As far as Legos, I was flipping channels this morning and a financial channel was showing a documentary on Legos. I did not watch but it seems the jist was that a new CEO came along and revamped the company. I am guessing that is why all the cool Star Wars and other kits came out?

I finished Keith Richards piece last night. It was pretty good.
Speaking of Keith, Jerry and Poodling.. I thought for a minute Keith was wearing a Garcia shirt at one point in the film (similar to the one Steve Parish is wearing at Veneta '72). Its in the part where he talks about Reggae and living in Jamaica circa '73 or so. They cut to old film footage of Keith jammin' and partying and he is wearing a shirt that has a very Garcia like t-shirt. ..but could be some sort of rasta creature with Jerry glasses as well, hard to tell on 40 year old grainy footage.
Perhaps Keith is a secret, closet dead head.

I'm with you on the release of 9/26/91. Definitely among the all time greatest shows from a tour that was uniformly great from the 9/4-6/91 Richfield run to the Boston Run. Certainly a release worthy tour.
I listened to Dicks Picks 17 9/25/91 last night and love this show. I've had it since it's initial release, but for some reason or another, neglected this show. Awesome from start to finish. Fall '91 was the peak of the Bruce/Vince era and among the last where Jerry was fully engaged and inspired every single night. The last great peak.

....streaming the second set now. Once again, NOT disappointed. These 30 Trips picks rock! The Wheel->Good Lovin' is pure magic. First Good Lovin' since 10.20.74, and that one was the first since the Europe '72 tour with Pig. Funny, my treasured DeadBase 50 doesn't footnote the Cobo version. I guess it was due to the fact that it was only a 40 show gap, but yet it was almost two years. The next one was the New Years Cow Palace one, (and I looove that version!). Unlike Jiminmd, I am streaming the shit out of these....I guess my tolerance is not as strong. But beware Jim, that SLC '95 show is not to be underestimated....but I guess you probably already figured that out....as Private Pyle would say, "Surprise, surprise, surprise!"....
...the Cobo Comes A Time just segued into a romping Dancin'. God, I love this band....
...Cobo was the last gig until my treasured Day On The Green shows in Oakland. One of my top three Dick's....get some!!!....
