We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

documentaries

I was thinking about my favorite documentaries over the weekend and thought about asking the board what folks enjoyed. To my surprise, I get to the office and the discussion was already ongoing. Man the group mind is true. I watched Song of the South this weekend, about Duane and the Allman Brothers. It was great. I highly recommend and it is a nice companion to Muscle Shoals. If you watch Muscle Shoals, Sound City, and Finding the Funk you will hear a common thread running through all three. Will have to watch Wrecking Crew, looks awesome.

I am very fond of a couple drummers mentioned in this thread, but I am really glad to see Michael Shrieve and Bill Bruford mentioned. I am a drummer, and when I was a teenager, I regularly watched live footage of Shrieve like it was porn. I was fortunate to catch King Crimson twice in '95 on the Thrak tour, and the interplay between Bruford and Pat Mastelotto was nothing short of wizardry. Bruford is a trickster, and he is not only obsessively precise, but well versed in the art of ridiculously obtuse time-signatures. Do yourself a favor and check out the Deja Vrooom DVD, most of which is on YouTube. However, with the DVD, I believe you can choose your viewing perspective. Moon is mentioned, probably my favorite drummer. It is really his energy and total chaos that hits me somewhere deep. Ginger: I actually started playing because of Ginger. I was 12 and begging for a left handed electric axe when my Dad played me "Do What You Like" from the Blind Faith LP. That was a defining moment, and I decided to play drums in that moment. I was a huge Ginger fan, and I still appreciate him. But, what appealed to my early teen brain (loud showmanship style drumming-double bass solos and what not) never lost its appeal, but my taste matured. I still dig Baker's work with Cream and Blind Faith, but hearing him (and Clapton and Bruce) on that live recording a few years ago, well, that is one of the most boring recordings I have ever heard. Other drummers who inspired me through the years, Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction)-I saw Jane's a couple times in my early drumming years before they broke up, and Perkins was a huge inspiration; Matt Cameron (Soundgarden and subsequently Pearl Jam)-Crazy rhythms and ghost beats, unique time signatures, excellent precision; Jaimoe and Butch Trucks (ABB)-possibly the "easiest" drum duo to watch play, just fluid and groovin', two-drummer shufflin'; Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon- just listen to "Mad Dogs and Englishmen", just about any Delaney and Bonnie LP, and Derek and the Dominoes; Tony Allen (Fela Kuti and the Afrika 70)-just sick!; and there are so many more. I always find musician comparing conversations fascinating, and how easily we start to blur the line between our preferences and individual tastes and fact with statements like "best", greatest ever", and so on. These musicians all have their own very distinct musical voices, and they are almost impossible to compare. I love these conversations and hearing who everyone loves and why.

Robbed in the East

Hi JiminMD here in fla. we were robbed because of the weather from seeing the eclipse. The Moon was Obscured by Clouds.............But I did Find a bunch of songs which dealt with the Moon. Sisters of the Moon by Fleetwood was a cool remembrance. Of course we were Standing on the Moon with the Dead, then Walking on the Moon with the Police, etc. There are a lot of songs dealing with the Moon! Mankind has been thinking about that glistening glob of celestial cheese a long time. Starting off the week in Winterland 73, 11-11 to be precise. From there the course is wide open. No eclipse here on the East Coast

Overcast and raining.. I didn't even know it was going on. Coincidentally, however, I spent my predawn hours listening to the Dark Star > Morning Dew from Dave's 13, almost a year since my first spin. Up way too early drinking some kona, great music to plan out my week. What a powerful performance.

Nice drummer discussion, compliments of Mr. Baker, I believe. I love all those mentioned.. I am partial to the multi-limb schizophrenia of Bill Bruford as well. I recently took a youtube spin of his work and bands and was completely absorbed as about an hour disappeared from space and time.

Lost In Space

Well, I sit about 100 miles east of Taylor PA patiently awaiting UPS's arrival at my office, while I read about deliveries elsewhere in my general vicinity and farther afield (MD, IL). I got the shipping update email but my order status still says its backordered with estimated shipping date of 10/31. It does seem that there is no rhyme or reason to the sequence in which they are shipping based on the fact that a couple of the recipients posting here ordered the box after I did. But that's OK, I'm just glad they started shipping finally and it's fun reading all the giddy posts...like kids in a candy store. And I have plenty of good tunes to listen to until the box lands here. I'm a patient man.

No email about shipment, no shipping info., no emailed links for unveiling yikes !! Only gotten multiple emails about delays and shipping address confirmations. Item still says backorder and I placed it on day 1, hour two so now I'm getting worried. No news is still good news right?

USB has not gone out, according to someone at Dead.net

I just got off the phone with Dead.net, and they said that the USB chips are actually scheduled to go out at the end of the month while the box set is shipping now. Wonder why the USB chip is taking so long.

Selling 17 CDs from an era I don't care for from my box set and letting people bid on them to decide their worth is not gauging anybody, and folks in fact were appreciative that I broke up a box set. The irony was, I thought I would reach out to you to burn you some '73 stuff before I realized what a turd you are.

Been loving your posts the last few weeks, we are for the most part a giddy bunch. Question to all, how much space do you think 6,500 of these boxes takes up? I mean if they ship 1,000 a day, that is pretty impressive. I am sure the Europeans get a pallet or two. Then thousand+ (of boxes, maybe 64 boxes/pallet)to the West of the Mississip. I still bet 50% are in the NE corridor...as even Grateful Dead called it deadhead alley (Boston to Washington D.C.). Edit 1) So maybe the U.S. gets 5000 boxes (?) Europe 1,000 - Aussie 250 and maybe the rest of the world 250? Hmmm I would be absolutely interested in that data.

I've owned a steamer and 90 1st box but this BOX takes the CIGAR WARLOCKS BOX to the next level. how do you guys feel? I've dubbed it the cigar dehumidifier

Thanks for the dimensions. When I saw the video yesterday I could see it was smaller then I originally expected it would be which is a good thing. I have just the perfect spot picked out in my music room for this baby. Glad to see you are in Bethlehem. My daughter went to Lehigh so we spent quite a bit of time down there a few years ago. I downloaded 9/25/81 show from Stabler Arena a couple of years ago. I like to have shows from venues that I know. Go Mt. Hawks! Rock on

Liner notes

Has anyone who has the box spoken about this yet? I haven't seen it. But I know someone else asked. From the quoted length of the book and the way it appears in the video, the liner notes Are Not in the book. So my edumacated guess is, The Liner Notes Are With The Individual Shows.

I wasn't worried per-say but just curious. I live in the boonies where mail doesn't get delivered and was just trying to figure out if I should take a trip to the post office. I seriously doubt that it will arrive here in AK for a few weeks...which just sucks. :(

The CDS I looked at have a message from Dave I tried the last show. I couldn't find anything in the book but I'm probably the guy really answer but there is no booklet to the shows. the book reeads both you read half than have to make the back the cover I thought that was badass

If you really want to know when the set will arrive at your door... Get a free UPS.com account (not a Premium, or whatever they call it). It will tell you the scheduled date and the tracking. You don't even have to know your package number, it will find it for you. Just have to make sure your name and address are exactly as dead.net has it.

Show notes compared to the 4CD-set

Can anyone give an opinion on the quality of the show notes. I believe in the 4cd truncated set - there were show-by-show reviews and notes. Are these replicated here or would the 4cd box be a good accompaniment to get to also get more detail on shows (as well as be a handy one for thee car).
