"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Head on over to Rollingstone.com for the very first listen of "Morning Dew" 9/18/87 Madison Square Garden, David Fricke's exclusive interview with archivist David Lemieux, and the reveal of 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN's '69 and '84 shows.

*Helpful hints for using your USB:

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:

I must have imagined it years before. It was so firmly entrenched in my mind that I never discovered it WASN'T THERE until you're disbelief made me check in with reality! Well, I am still right and accurate with any other comments I make. Everyone forget about this regrettable incident. My credibility is totally blown... Got a lot of hateful thoughts towards GDM to make up for. Maybe buying this box will balance the scales? There's a $700 see-saw rocking in my head, me on one seat, my wife and baby on the other. When will the see-saw settle to one side? Which side will it be?

If I haven't heard it yet, then any given show is "new" to me, and that's all that counts....this box is for me, not anybody else. Don't mean to sound presumptuous, but that's my take. Do with it what you will. ....as far as packaging, this release is gonna be pretty big and heavy. I fear the discs might be packaged ala Road Trips style. I hope I'm wrong....

Lot of Money -- Not really "new"
IMHO -- -- This box set strikes me as a pretty opportunistic venture by GDM. Talk about "sticker shock." Wow. And, after 36 editions of Dicks Picks, another 12(?) of Dave's Picks, the "So Glad You Made It," and "May '77" box sets, not to mention "Road Trips" and various exceptional -- and some not so hot -- single disk releases, I couldn't honestly even think about plowing more $$$ into another "epic" box release. I'm a deadhead, and I can find reasons to appreciate even some of the "lamer" shows and tours, but I can't see plunking down so much mooola for stuff that, basically, has been duplicated many times on other GD releases. Do I really need another '77 show? Or another '84 show? '93? No.

Well, I sit about 100 miles east of Taylor PA patiently awaiting UPS's arrival at my office, while I read about deliveries elsewhere in my general vicinity and farther afield (MD, IL). I got the shipping update email but my order status still says its backordered with estimated shipping date of 10/31. It does seem that there is no rhyme or reason to the sequence in which they are shipping based on the fact that a couple of the recipients posting here ordered the box after I did. But that's OK, I'm just glad they started shipping finally and it's fun reading all the giddy posts...like kids in a candy store. And I have plenty of good tunes to listen to until the box lands here. I'm a patient man.

No email about shipment, no shipping info., no emailed links for unveiling yikes !! Only gotten multiple emails about delays and shipping address confirmations. Item still says backorder and I placed it on day 1, hour two so now I'm getting worried. No news is still good news right?

Got this pleasant message in my box: "you said: Sorry Profiteers.. Looks like you scalpers will have unsealed products to send out. Muah muah. I say: you deserve to be buried under medical bills and to rely on selling CDs to make ends meet, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone, so I forgive you for your malicious intent. But you should have a kinder attitude toward others, especially considering that selling a product is a legal activity, and one that your country is built on. Did you ever consider that one of the generous people on this board who answer your stupid questions all day long might be a re-seller of CDs? You're all class pal, take that ridiculous suit off." Because nobody else has financial woes, apparently. Oh, and I'm wearing athletic shorts and a t-shirt. I guess that would indeed make a ridiculous suit.

lol - I didn't want to embarrass you by posting that comment, but it appears you have no shame. Or maybe you do, as you didn't publicize your response. Like I said class act all the way. Selling 17 CDs from an era I don't care for from my box set and letting people bid on them to decide their worth is not gauging anybody, and folks in fact were appreciative that I broke up a box set. The irony was, I thought I would reach out to you to burn you some '73 stuff before I realized what a turd you are.

Been loving your posts the last few weeks, we are for the most part a giddy bunch. Question to all, how much space do you think 6,500 of these boxes takes up? I mean if they ship 1,000 a day, that is pretty impressive. I am sure the Europeans get a pallet or two. Then thousand+ (of boxes, maybe 64 boxes/pallet)to the West of the Mississip. I still bet 50% are in the NE corridor...as even Grateful Dead called it deadhead alley (Boston to Washington D.C.). Edit 1) So maybe the U.S. gets 5000 boxes (?) Europe 1,000 - Aussie 250 and maybe the rest of the world 250? Hmmm I would be absolutely interested in that data.

I just received E72 about 90 days ago...had to order the generic version :( So no excitement from opening the Steamer Trunk. Oh well loving the music. Trying to remember which show you saw on E72. Will pay close attention when I get to hear it!

I think I am going to have a friend who is a sound man come check my stereo this weekend. I mean I need to let everyone hear how good a 66 midnight hour is. Absolutely cannot wait.

I was just wondering what the order status is of those that have received the box. Does it still show as backordered?

I have not received any communication. So there is some sort of Miracle Ticket? Is it Nassau Coliseum or Willy Wonka?

YES IT WAS BACKORDERED THIS MORNING. The MIRACLE EMAIL READS LIKE THIS:Unroll that scroll! Does yours say MIRACLE? Well, we can't gift you with tickets to 78's best show but we ARE going to grant each miracle scroll holder with a personalized Grateful Dead 30 Trips RIAA-certified Gold Record plaque as well as your numbered scroll. To claim your miracle, we'll need you to follow a few simple steps – outlined here – by November 16th, 2015.

UPS tells me the box has shipped, but order status still says backordered, estimated to ship 10/31/15. I would say, Don't worry about the order status.

I Hate being a spoiler but whenever most of you guys gets yours please answer this because ultimately it's about the music but to me this is about the BOX. I've owned a steamer and 90 1st box but this BOX takes the CIGAR WARLOCKS BOX to the next level. how do you guys feel? I've dubbed it the cigar dehumidifier

sounds incredible! As I stated this morning, as Warlocks were my last shows, I think I will replay those tonight and tomorrow, even if I get the box tomorrow. Egad

Thanks for the dimensions. When I saw the video yesterday I could see it was smaller then I originally expected it would be which is a good thing. I have just the perfect spot picked out in my music room for this baby. Glad to see you are in Bethlehem. My daughter went to Lehigh so we spent quite a bit of time down there a few years ago. I downloaded 9/25/81 show from Stabler Arena a couple of years ago. I like to have shows from venues that I know. Go Mt. Hawks! Rock on

Has anyone who has the box spoken about this yet? I haven't seen it. But I know someone else asked. From the quoted length of the book and the way it appears in the video, the liner notes Are Not in the book. So my edumacated guess is, The Liner Notes Are With The Individual Shows.

You got it right. Colorado Wonka bars would be awesome Too bad its possibly +1.5 days from the WV. It seems we have Md. and THE WV panhandle covered that's closest to the VA mailing code

Yes, someone earlier said each show is sort of like a DaP. Liner notes, photos, news articles, and the set lists are on the back of each show. Rock on

I wasn't worried per-say but just curious. I live in the boonies where mail doesn't get delivered and was just trying to figure out if I should take a trip to the post office. I seriously doubt that it will arrive here in AK for a few weeks...which just sucks. :(

I did see someone post "they are NOT packaged like the DaPseries" But they are?

They are NOT with photos, news, etc in the individual show cases. Just the brief notes we saw in the PDF.

It's kind of like Road trips meets Europe72 with a little bit of 77 in my opinion. So BE CAREFUL disc openings could be at the top of the show you pick out

If you really want to know when the set will arrive at your door... Get a free UPS.com account (not a Premium, or whatever they call it). It will tell you the scheduled date and the tracking. You don't even have to know your package number, it will find it for you. Just have to make sure your name and address are exactly as dead.net has it.

Can anyone give an opinion on the quality of the show notes. I believe in the 4cd truncated set - there were show-by-show reviews and notes. Are these replicated here or would the 4cd box be a good accompaniment to get to also get more detail on shows (as well as be a handy one for thee car).
