"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Head on over to Rollingstone.com for the very first listen of "Morning Dew" 9/18/87 Madison Square Garden, David Fricke's exclusive interview with archivist David Lemieux, and the reveal of 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN's '69 and '84 shows.

*Helpful hints for using your USB:

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

This Grateful Dead original is as tasty as a fresh morning bun here. Jerry barks the words with great conviction even though he apparently was not happy with the poetry. Sometimes all you gotta do is sell it, and he knows just how to do that, even at this early stage. The odd time changes are maneurvered expertly and the song is a rousing success. A victory lap is called for and Garcia whips up a guitar froth that goes on for a good, jammy time while (I hope) the dancers frug to their hearts’ content. First Jerry, then Billy chops the time in half and drops back to 4/4 soon after. Jer wants to stretch out still. Pigpen's organ stabbing gets louder, to the point of some distraction. The self-made fade at the end is like watching steam dissipate. It's another winner.

Sigh. See, you should have ordered the USB. Then you could be on pins and needles the next 30 days and might have gotten lucky! Now when did you feel that way and hopeful for the holidays since you were a kid! But then again, if we are still waiting, you still did better. And NO - I DO NOT WANT TO CANCEL!!! I just want what I paid for or an update. And if I can't get an update, but sometime in the next 12 months will actually get what I paid for months ago, I will take it. And no, I do not resent those of you who got the box. I truly am happy for you - others suffering does not alleviate mine, but knowing others are happy (if supportive) does ease mine. And it sounds like a blast to listen to. Just hope I get to someday - and feel that making the point here now and then is my right. Not directed at you who have the music, just the off chance that being shamed in public makes someone at Rhino try to do better.

Well, after several listens through the box, I finally have found out one bad thing. What could anybody possibly get me for Xmas that will hold a candle to this box? The bloom is certainly off the rose for me this year. Boxzilla is just SO amazing that I am afraid I will have to wait for Xmas 2016 to receive any present that will really spin my top. Rock on

WOW. I didn't listen to the streams and have a random listening pattern so it takes a while to hear new stuff. This Trip was great, a perfect choice and the 1st of the box shows i heard. I literally had to turn around and look at the monitor to find out WTF it was. Similar in feel to the 5/6/70 Kresge Plaza show at MIT where they crank the whole set knowing they don't have another set to worry about. The Other One is intense, the Lovelight NFA closer is as good as the Minglewood from 5/15/70 when Bob shreds his vocal chords in the give and take with Pigpen. It's a nice choice for the box, short but it's the whole ride from start to end.

Honestly, I'm posting to see if my new photo shows up. Ha. But while I'm here, let me say to the USB crowd that I feel a portion of your pain. My box arrived very late and there was no reason given in advance, even though the reason was a shipping label SNAFU. They could have just told us that, and instead they chose to let us guess. Adding further tragicomedy, I just received my shipping notice. It came about 4 weeks after the actual box arrived. So hang in there, brethren. It's a mess but I have confidence it will be straightened out in the end. You'll love the tunes. The time lapse morph from pimply garage band to lumbering behemoth collapsing under its own weight is a wonder to behold in all of its audio splendor. The stops along the way are priceless.

greetings from here, so, my cat loves the grateful dead. he's now listened to a good chunk of the trips box set. in fact, he's the one who wanted it. i covered for him though, i don't want my wife to get too suspicious. he's got a habit, and i enable him. but habits are habits. he would have found someone else to indulge his needs, so i thought. it was a surprise when he left the room during the cornell '81 althea though. he loves the spring 90 box he wanted me to get for him, so why would he walk on that song, that show? i couldn't figure it out. he's listened to a lot, and he makes a statement now? the only thing i can think of is that i've had to revisit that show a few times, and maybe he wants to move on. i could understand it if that was the case, but why not walk out on the me and my uncle (nothing against it personally)? we're all different, just have to accept it. i don't see how i could change, nor why would i want to? everyone of us here's something different, through a neural network of experiences and genetics. i can get him back in the room though. he's a sucker for black muddy river. i know just the encore. i think i've talked myself through this little therapy session. thanks for listening.

Yeah, I'm obsessive about some of this stuff, too. I would usually put something like "GD:" in front of the Album name so that when sorting by Album all the GD albums are together, but because of the way it works in the car, I want to save as much space as possible. I don't store any other bands albums just by date like that. Actually, I do have two groups of GD albums, the ones that don't lend themselves to a date, do get a GD: in front of them, as do the studio albums, etc. But, I try to keep the album and track names as short as possible because the car screen is going to truncate them, and the more I can abbreviate certain things, the more info I will be able to see. I still find that I have both "Brown Eyed Women" and "Brown-Eyed Women". That's not usually a problem, but it can be a pain for creating certain sorts, playlists, etc. I just kinda fix things as I notice them. Or sometimes I don't bother :) Edit: I have no idea how long it takes after I upload, for it start appearing when other people load the same CD into iTunes. Can someone tell me if they are getting the track lists now?

I ripped mine using Windows Media Player and was inputting all the information last night. I consistently use "&" and try to stay consistent with Brown-Eyed and Black-Throated as well as Goin' vs. Playing (which I actually usually write as Playin' on setlists ironically). I also chose to name the albums 30 Trips Fillmore Auditorium 7-3-1966 Disc 1 etc. I normally use the YYYY-MM-DD convention, but didn't for some reason this time. Sorry if that ends up annoying somebody here when they go to rip theirs. Maybe somebody will have theirs from '74 onward in before I get back to ripping and I'll just follow their format...

Yeah, that's one good thing (maybe the only one) about getting my box later rather than sooner. The metadata will be in Gracenote by the time I get there. Thank you! That is a lot of work, and although I will change the album titles, the vast majority of song titles will be just like I want them.

Go to www.rhino.com and scroll down to Dr. Rhino's Picks #129 (Wednesday October 7, 2015 7:16 PM) and in that pose of people, you will see a familiar face - the guy revealing \this 30 Trips Around The Sun video. That is "Dr. Rhino" White lab coat, stethoscope black rimmed glasses, moustache.

Song Name [Live] (Venue, City, State/Country MM/DD/YY Set 1/First Show/Late Show whatever vernacular the liner uses if there is any indication) Every truly live song (no overdubs) on my itunes is tagged like this so I can easily search [Live] or by state/city or date.

I change the titles to this format "94-10-01 50th Boston Garden Boston MA". With the source identifier after date - 50th, E72, DaP#, DP#, 90Box, CM, CM_Mtx, HS_Mtx. SBD, Aud, etc. That way I may have more than one version of a show, but all centrally located when I search for it in sonos or itunes. I'll be burning a travel copy of anything from GDP and create custom disc design by show and throw them into one of the 500 CD cases based chronologically. The GDP CD will be played in my home cd players only. Once I get the 50th (MONDAY) and rip them to my computer, will upgrade my computer hard drives (mirrored pair) to a larger size (almost full anyways) and then I'll have two backup copies of my music and photo libraries.

wjonjd & Dennis Wilmot ~ Nice to see that there are people as obsessed as I am about ID tagging. I had no idea that's how GraceNotes worked. I thought that the manufacturer of the CD uploaded the tagging information. I do many of the same things that you guys do. And with a band like the Grateful Dead, I can't imagine not having some kind of consistent system to manage their enormous (and ever growing) catalogue of music. In my iTunes, for Artist Name, I use "Grateful Dead (Live)" and "Grateful Dead (Studio)". Album Name for the Live stuff I do this: 1977-05-25 (Set 1 - The Mosque, Richmond VA) [Dave's Picks Vol 1] 1977-05-25 (Set 2 - The Mosque, Richmond VA) [Dave's Picks Vol 1] So when you look down the whole (very long) list of live shows in iTunes, it is very easy to read and distinguish dates from Set # from Venue, and then finally, the Source of the show. Aesthetics is as important, to me, as the information. Album Name for the Studio stuff is just the name of the Album as normal. For Songs, I also use "&", "and" on a case by case basis, based on aesthetics. I'm a chronology-crazed listener and an archivist-anal collector, so the Live method above is awesome for that. I never listen with "random" or "shuffle" on. Never! My favorite bands (and I have many), in particular, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Grateful Dead, evolved so dramatically from the beginning to the end of their careers, that I love to listen chronologically. I think that started as a kid in the late-1970s, when I bought The Beatles "Red Album" (1962-1966) and the "Blue Album" (1967-1970) collections. I was completely dumbfounded how all of that music was the same band, and in only 8-9 years. WTF! I mean how in the world does the band who wrote "She Loves You" and "Love Me Do" in 1962, just a short time later evolve into writing "Eleanor Ribgy", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "A Day In The Life" and the Abbey Road Album Side Two 'Suite'? Brilliant! Ever since, I immerse myself in an artists' catalogue and do it, chronologically. Similarly, with Led Zeppelin and The Grateful Dead . . . Well, anyway, now that I know that it's people like you that take the time to input and upload the ID Tagging . . . Thank you, thank you! . . . . . . and a good day to all of you!

I use a modified "Vernon" method recommended by etree. Cream Puff War -GD66-05-19a - Avalon Ballroom SF CA SBD This allows for automatic chronological sorting by date for the same song titles under the default method of display in file manager. You might notice there's no 4 digit year, just 2 for most GD seeds on etree, that because it was decided that Jerry having died in 1995 there was no need to have a 4 digit year for GD, back when filenames used to have character limits. I still delete all those "19" from newer seeds to match the old SHN sets on the HDs.

Thanks for that link, man. I've had problems in the past getting all of the album art I wanted. That's also an area where I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Somehow, I've never found that spot for grabbing art. There's a few in there I'll already be using to replace unsatisfactory art choices I've had to make. For example, I currently have the same art for all three nights of Winterland '73. And yes, thanks to you who are getting the info onto gracenote. I actually never knew where that came from before. Though I, too, often make my own little custom tweaks once I get the info in order to have everything as consistent as possible in my iTunes.

I did an internet search to see how long it takes for uploaded information to Gracenotes to take before it becomes visible automatically when others put the same CD into a linked computer. I don't know if this is accurate, but the sites I found says that it takes 24-48 hours before the new information propagates. I didn't know that when I did the uploads. If you can wait, they will eventually show up :)

Unfortunately, I didn't really get on the bus until after Jerry was gone.. so no dates are going to have significance to me, as far as shows attended or anything. I would probably have special interest in any tickets or passes for shows that happen to be dated Dec 9th of any year though.

That's It For The Other One I really don't need the disc anymore, just the inlay cards, front & back, or high quality scans of them. PM me if you have this boot CD.

here we go again, just read my shipping notice and the box is lost in the ups system, says the address is incorrect. Not so, have used same address for years, only had one problem and that was when the deadnet/rhino machine used ups. Now what? Will I cancel payment of credit card? Will the rhino machine send me another one? Will I ever get this box? Stay tuned, same dead time, same dead channel, to find out the answers to these and other questions.

If you switch the delivery to the UPS center, maybe you can pick it up there. I switched it, since I won't be home Monday when it's delivered. I'll just swing by UPS center on my way home. Whoever originally pointed that out, thanks for the suggestion!

The saint-like sister who purchased this box set for me as a Xmas gift has been elevated to Goddess. She was reading about the box and the dated scroll (this site?) and brought the box over immediately and insisted I open it (I think also as consolation for an upcoming 2nd back surgery 10/19). Needless to say I listened…(LOL). I found the compartment with the book, concert ticket (10/30/91) and backstage pass (6/18/93) as well as the 45rpm single. I haven't found the scroll yet. Is it in another (hidden) compartment? Sorry if this has been discussed earlier but I'm curious about it as well as the set's number.

The scroll is in a similar compartment to the book, just on the reverse side. The box number is as top of the scroll, unless it says "miracle" at the top, in which case there's instructions to follow to get additional schwag :)

Are you aware that there is an audience patch in New Minglewood Blues from about 3:30 to 4:00? It's not a sharp cut, but a quick fade from the sbd > aud > sbd. On my discs of the show that I had since 2002, there was just a strange edit, I knew some, about 30 seconds, of the show was missing. The discs replaced multi-gen sbd cassette and I just thought it was the tape flip at about 45 minutes.

Coming from a guy that has spent the better part of the last month in the hospital with my dad.. some words on reading the tea leaves and karma. Your surgery is on 10/19, the anniversary of one of the all time classic shows the Dead performed (10/19/73 Fairgrounds, Oklahoma City, Dicks Picks 19). The tea leaves are in the brew.. Set 1: Promised Land Sugaree Mexicali Blues Tennessee Jed Looks Like Rain Don't Ease Me In Jack Straw They Love Each Other El Paso Row Jimmy Playin' In The Band Set 2: China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider Me And My Uncle Mississippi Half-Step Big River Dark Star Mind Left Body Jam Morning Dew Sugar Magnolia Encore: Eyes Of The World Stella Blue Johnny B. Goode The tale starts off promising.. but after just the first song changes course. It looks like your back injury started w/ Sugaree shaking it (cause of the injury) which was exasterbated by some Tequila and Jack Daniels (Mexicalli / Tennessee Jed) and things really don't start to turn around until Row Jimmy (a song obviously about me, right?). Playin' In The Band symbolizes your sisters gift of spirit and generosity. The Band has certainly been spirited and generous to all of us. China>Rider possibly describes the experiences related to taking a pain reliever to reduce pain. A sign that your back problem is chronic, and needs addressed. Disorientation followed by a little tension and the ultimate relief (the double-waterfall over my back in China Cat to the headlight on a North Bound Train from Rider). Half step and big river are the journey on 10/19, your trip to the hosp. will involve a crossing of a big river. Dark Star is obviously about the surgery itself. Intense, often dark and foreboding, sometimes groovy, usually trippy. This is it. An extended and one of the very best Mind Left Body jams is a good sign indeed. Morning Dew must be the period the anesthesia wears off.. and a glorious Morning Dew it is. One of my personal Favorites, the Phil Bombs in the crescendo of the first jam will rattle your vertebrae painfully free of what bind them. Then the recovery of Sugar Mag, Stella Blue and you will be dancing to Johnny B. Goode by the end. My fathers story was similar.. two surgeries, brain not back.. for the second his room number was 420, a good sing and right now all is good and I am home.

This may be about as ridiculous a statement as one can make, but if anyone wants to trade a Europe '72 trunk for a 30 Trips box, PM me. I'm talking just the cases without the music. I wouldn't mind having the E72 book and...whatever else came with it. I would include the extras that came with the 30 Trips box as well. May come as a surprise to learn that a guy who holds a PhD in Europe '72 doesn't have the trunk, but alas, it's true.
