@ Freeworld: Thanks for the advice, but, we're just a bunch of hippies doing the best we can. If everybody who came into the Vineyard had a good heart (like the vast majority of us) and didn't just disappear with a boatload of vines, it would work just fine. Unfortunately, there has been a recent influx of selfish folks that have caused problems. I for one wouldn't want too much structure. Peace, "That path is for, your steps alone."

OK that's the new topic -- hands -- things of beauty created by HANDS. lately lots of virtual art/realities have been created in cyberspace, but if/when that shuts down, will people still be able to weave, knit, sew, sow, reap, harvest and ferment their own food, clothes? oh yeah, make and play musical instruments?) We may never see a complete quality recording of this 3 set afternoon on 9/3/72. Owsley was running the board, I believe. First set indeed is a low quality audience with stops between songs.2nd set Bertha is missing a channel (vocals) for awhile. 3rd set seems to be the only set of the show with a decent recording. Check Dicks Picks 36 for a taste! I do have the complete show as described above with multi-sourced/multi-generational history. Did One More Saturday Night end this show?

Somestimes vines overlap, and that can be a good thing. I just stumbled on something this weekend while listening to my copy of 5/5/77 New Haven, CT. This was vined on a CDR in the "1977-05-05 May 1977 East Coast Vine" and on a DVD (flac) in the "1977 Lossless Vine: Part 2." I got both vines but I was only listening to the CDR copy from the 'East Coast Vine." Set 1 Tenn Jed had a 4 second drop-out dead air at the 1 minute mark (rich man step on my poor head..), and I think I heard another drop-out later in the song. Bertha had a minor pop glitch towards the middle-end of the song. I had my cell phone laying next to this CDR for a short time, and I thought the magnetic field had erased portions of the song. I don't think so. I went and checked the betty board version on the flac DVD "1977 Lossless Vine: Part 2." There were 4 DVDs, and this show in on DVD#1. Wow! This is a better source, and there is no drop-out in Tenn Jed. Tenn Jed is complete on this source. So I ditched the other CDRs and re-burned the betty board source. You might wanna check if you want the best source.

9/3/72 is not on the September 72 vine as presently constituted. Good intentions pave the way to hell, or to varying degrees of confusion. I gave a partial re-seed of the 9/72 vine when it died, using CDRs only. The shows are listed in my post on that vine. 9/3 was not included, but both Waterbury shows were. I believe 9/16 was complete, but much was an audience recording. The Dark Star was a good soundboard. If a new September vine is to be attempted, I can contribute if it helps. Steve

I chuckled a bit when Stuman said that there wasn't much 1974 vined. Off the top of my head, I recalled the Feb Winterland, May 74, June 74, July 74, at least some of the Europe 74 and the Oct Winterland shows all being vined. I also thought to myself that there weren't as many shows played in 1974 as in other years. So I went to deadlists and to the vindex and, by my very unofficial count, there were 40 shows played in 1974, 36 of which have been vined. So 90% of the year's shows have been vined!!! Not to mention that the lone March show is a DP, and at least 2 of the 3 August shows were part of another. I got a lot of these shows a while back, before I was doing lossless and some even before I was using I-Tunes (so for example my Oct Winterland shows have gaps). And I haven't signed up for the June and July vines, though I will at some point (I'm a little busy right now as most of you know). I have some of those shows from other sources. Anyways, nice try Stuman, haha.

And some then seemingly die!! First off.... I can't thank all of you kind people enough for sharing this music we all love so passionately.... I have taken advantage of many of the offerings available in the Vineyard.... and I shall continue to..... But I am holding ten vines that no one else apparently wants.... I am the last name on the list for each.... I keep trying to bump them to the front to get some attention hoping someone will bite and take them off my hands.... Just did so with all ten.... but holding on to them makes me feel guilty! So I guess this is merely a time and place for me to vent. Again.... thanks to all for sharing.... and thank you Marye for all your work as well. Peace my friends.... Raymond.

Don't sweat it. It happens. I have been in the same situation. What I would do is once a week repost on the vine thread asking if anyone wants to partake. This helps because it moves the vine to front page and it is way more visible then if it's "buried" on page 6. People will eventually partake. It looks as if most of the vines you are holding are for post-'77 Dead and non-Dead shows (undead??). In my admittedly short time in the Vineyard those seem to be less popular than the vines with '67 to '77 Dead. Just an observation; ymmv. ~~~~~~~ "Goin' home, goin' home, by the waterside I will rest my bones; listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul" "I will walk alone by the black muddy river and sing me a song of my own"

I have nastalgia for more stuff from 1994 and 1995. I have the April Fools show (4/1/94--Atlanta, GA (Omni); digital soundboard; 3 CDs) that I can offer up if there is interest. But I was wondering if anyone had maybe a few more 94 & 95 to offer up, and I'll throw in the 4/1/94 show with it. These are the 94 & 95 shows that are already vined here (below). 3/21/94 Richfield, OH (Richfield Coliseum); soundboard; 3 CDs 3/30/94 Atlanta, GA (Omni); digital soundboard; 3 CDs 10/1/94 Boston, MA (Boston Garden); soundboard; 3 CDs 10/10//94 Landover, MD (USAir Arena); soundboard; 3 CDs 10/13/94 New York (Madison SQ Garden); soundboard; 3 CDs 10/14/94 New York (Madison SQ Garden); soundboard; 3 CDs 6/21/95 Albany, NY (Knickerbocker Arena); FOB audience recording; 3 CDs 6/25/95 Washington, DC (Robert F. Add the rest of 1973 to the list of things I am working on, as I should soon be getting everything from 9/24 on. I got the 1968 shows in and am working on them. CB volunteered to send me some "newer" sources and I should be getting them in a week or so. I will get the 2d part of the 1970 vine posted by this weekend.

I looked over my list (this is the smallest its been in months - 26!) and came across vines that are totally dead, trust me, and need to be re-seeded in order for them to continue: 1) 3 from 82 and a 78 too (dead only 3 into the list, sad) I did pm gdhead77 about a re-seed 2) Augusta 10/12/84 3) Buffalo Springfield 4) Santa Fe 83 Then the ones held up by gratefulmikes: 1) Summer 82 2) Greek 84 3) Jimi HendriXmas I spoke with him about a month ago and he was back from being on the road and was going to send out the pile of vines in his possession. Now its a month later and still no movement/communication. Come on gratefulmikes help us out bro! This is just the ones on my list. The overall list is ridiculous. I think dstache has one but I'd also like to consider non-Grateful Dead vines too. Can anybody help re-seed the first 4 on my list?? Please, I'd really appreciate it! I'm always willing to re-seed any lost vines, I just don't have a copy of these yet :( Thanks for your help!! "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Folks, I'm sure I speak for all of us in giving amazed thanks to dstache and his merry crew for the lossless mega-vines they're putting together. Community, collaboration, and love for the music at its best. Way to go! Some folks have privately expressed concern that these huge vines will stifle the growth of smaller ones and we'll lose folks who aren't set up to handle the big ones--maybe they can only handle CDs, maybe they only want a show or two, and the shows will only be available in the huge collections. I'm not telling anybody what to do here, but it seems to me the fix for that is fairly obvious--someone gets the big vine, excerpts it, and vines that. I'm pretty sure no one here is interested in keeping fellow Vineyard folks from vining in the format of their choice. I mention the issue because it's come up once or twice in the background lately. What you guys want to do about it is up to you! Thanks! ME

I am all for someone taking a vine, selecting the best shows, converting them to WAV, and vining them. I have asked that my recent vines be lossless ONLY so that the vines will be less cumbersome and expensive to post. But by all means, please convert these vines to WAV and start a NEW vine. If someone does SHN/FLAC, but can't handle a 4 disc vine, I suggest PMing someone who did sign up and offering to trade. I have lost interest in WAV trading but I am always up for lossless trading. I am especially looking for Fall 79, early 80's and Brent 1990 shows.

I have noticed that the larger vines usually contain shows that have already been vined as smaller versions. The only problem with that I see is that you end up signing up for and receiving the smaller vines without realizing that you already have or will have it from the larger vine - so it's kind of a waste in that sense - waste of postage, time etc. That's why I have created my own spreadsheet to keep track of all the shows I have to avoid repeats. I personally enjoy and look for flac/shn vines. I don't really care how big they are as long as it is flac. But for the folks without flac capabilty (and really it is the folks without DVD-roms because it is so simple to convert flacs, that should not be the problem, it's not being able to read the DVD's that's the problem), I understand that they should be able to enjoy these vines too. So I think the only way around that is like Marye suggests (and dstache has mentioned this too) for someone to take the flacs and convert them into smaller (separate) audio CD vines. Problems I see: 1.How would we know someone wants a particular show converted to wav? How would we know to start a new, separate wav vine? Which shows do you convert? 2. You could have a bunch of small vines come off of one large vine - that seems like it could get chaotic, like someone would need to manage that.. 3. There's really no feasible way to convert an entire flac vine into wavs - going from a couple of DVDs to a stack of CDs, that would be an insurmountable amount of work and postage. If I could find a full time job that would pay me to do that ... hmmmm :-) "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Dust off those rusty strings just one more time. Gonna make em shine."

I have no interest for much of anything in wav format , however i will be adding to a vine here soon that will be in wav format . I don`t have a dvd burner at this time . But yes if someone wants to convert from a large dvd vine , and make a seprate vine out of it thats cool . Maybe just use part of the name of the dvd vine in the name of the wav vine . like 3-18-xx wav from shn/flac #x or something like that . that might help clear some confusion on the folks signing up for the same shows twice thing . I dunno , just a thought .. But yes we can`t exclude the flacless folks here . I beleive dstache has mentioned that once before ..

I feel a little bad now. As everyone probably knows, I am not trying to exclude anyone. I guess that sometimes once you finally give in and do something, you get to thinking that everyone else has already done it. So when I finally decided to start doing lossless, I figured everyone else did it (or could do it). If you don't have a DVD reader, you can't do it, and if you don't have a burner (a la Hippy) it makes it difficult as you have to burn onto CDs, which hold a lot less. But if you do have a DVD burner, let me tell all you luddites (technophobes) it is SO EASY. People use different software, but I highly recommend Trader's Little Helper. One download. Free. All you need. I don't even have an IPod. I don't have a flat screen. I have a mini stereo system (which ONE DAY will be massively upgraded). I am not into technology. And I did it. Many of the 73 shows I have in my lossless vines have already been vined, either by me in my early Cream Filling vine (11/14, 11/17, 11/20), by Bob in his 73 Eurovine (4 Sept shows), or by others (3/28, 3/31, 5/26). But I am willing to start a few WAV vines containing 3 shows each. WAVers should post here the shows they want vined and I will do that. As for 1977, I am going to let someone else do that. Again, much of 1977 has been vined in WAV (Stache Rides 77, most of the May shows, Winterland 77, Fall 77 Parts 1 and 2). I do feel the need to tell you that from MY EXPERIENCE, it will behoove you to make the switch. I wish I had converted to lossless earlier as I am now slowly trying to replace the WAV shows that I have. The number of people who trade WAV is rapidly shrinking, just as cassette traders have in the past. If you just want to have a small collection, WAV is probably fine. If you want a lot of shows, you definitely should do lossless.

stuman came to my technology rescue. he walked me thru the process of converting flac files and i even saved his directions (so, stuman, if you don't want to write it all out again, i'll send you the file!). it's worth the process b/c i just got the deadbeats vine and i didn't want to bother w the flac version, so i just copied the standard stuff- and the standard stuff is full of skips and jumps and bleeps... so, now i have to delete all i did yesterday and redo it from the flac discs knowing they will not have those issues.... all while the next guy in the vineline is camped out next to his mailbox waiting for me to get my shit together! so, stuman's offer to help is real and valid. thanks again, stuman- caroline

I enjoy listening to the GD in the computer, in my car CD player while driving, or while at home on the ole' boom box. So all the flac stuff I get, I unzip to wav and then burn to CDs. I like flac on DVDs because you get more stuff, but in the end, it will be converted to wav so that I can listen to it. So my collection is a book case full of CDRs organized by year. Well I wished he would have said something. I am about 45 miles due east to the Stanley. Close enough to drive up and buy him dinner. Possibly next time. I was thinking the exact same thing after I read that interview. You know, people do change their stance a bit as they get older.. To me the last election was more about ridding the White House of the tyranny it was under the last 8 years rather than jumping on one person's bandwagon.. Maybe that was Bobby's stance, I don't know, but it would be interesting to hear what Jerry would have thought about it all. Thanks for that link to the interview Marye! "We're friendly. For me, I can't see relating to the audience any other way. We exist by their grace. It's very hard for me to do anything but like them. They're nice people." That's a lot of the GD ethos right there, at least in this newbie's view. As for the political stuff, based on what I've read (McNally, other Jerry interviews) I doubt Jerry would have had the band indulge in the overt Obama/Boxer/Pelosi support we've seen in the past year from Bobby and the boys. But if no Obama benefit = no '09 tour, one can argue with the impetus for the reunion but the later result is undeniably grate. :-) ~~~~~~~ "Goin' home, goin' home, by the waterside I will rest my bones; listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul" "I will walk alone by the black muddy river and sing me a song of my own"

http://www.reporterherald.com/webextra/1976flood/ Reading Rick's post about mail patterns from Estes to Denver brought back vivid memories of the night the dam broke up near Estes Park releasing floodwaters into the Big Thompson Canyon. I was returning from Frontier Days, a festival in Cheyenne, with friends Chris and Christine, en route to Estes and eventually back down thru Ward & Nederland. Heading west from Loveland on US 34, we pulled into a liquor store for a bottle of JD # 7 about 8:30 pm. Had we not stopped & continued up into the canyon, we most certainly would've met our makers. Instead, we saw the Colorado Highway Patrol set up roadblocks and close westbound traffic. I think 139 people died in the raging waters, with another 5 or 6 never found due to this disaster, resulting from cloud seeding effects in efforts to create rain..... Haven't been back to Loveland or Berthoud since, but I imagine it's really grown.

I have had trouble reading the DVDs in a couple of the recent vines, in particular the SHN/FLAC 1973 and SHN/FLAC 1970 series. After doing some research, I have learned that my DVD drive cannot read DVDs that are burned in UDF format. There are competing DVD formats and the Mac OS has stayed with the old format (ISO, also known as ISO-9660) rather than fully adopting the newer standard (UDF), which Microsoft is behind (shock, amazement!). So DVDs burned in UDF format look blank to the DVD drive on my Mac but can be read by the DVD drive in my laptop from work, which is (of course) a PC. To get around the problem I've been using my work laptop to transfer the FLAC/SHN files to a USB drive, which my Mac can then read. The only alternative is to buy a $50 piece of software that enables the Mac DVD drive to read UDF format, and I am obviously trying to avoid that option. Okay, enough gobbledygook, here's the quick and easy solution, for those willing to accommodate me (and probably, any other Mac users in the Vineyard): when you burn the DVDs, use ISO format instead of UDF format. Everybody's DVD drives can read the ISO format, so it won't cause problems for either the Mac or PC users. From what I've read, the settings on DVD-burning software for the PC are easy to change to ISO format just before a burn. Many thanks, and now back to regular programming . . . ~~~~~~~ "They say Cain caught Abel rolling loaded dice"

This is the thread we should use to make it easier on Marye, so that when she goes to the new vines thread she doesn't have to wade through a bunch of posts to find the new vines to be posted. People are still posting comments over there, but not to the same extent, and hopefully soon everyone will know to come here to talk about vining, future vines, etc. Good to have you back, Lopezz!

and by future vines, I mean vines that you are working on posting for later, not vines that are ready to go. For vines that are ready to go and you want people to start signing up, post over at the New Vines section. I believe Marye's intent is for only "new vines" to be posted there, and for all discussions to occur here.
