Dead.Net Vines - What It Is & How It Works

(We're changing some things for 2009)

BACKGROUND: The concept of a "vine" is music sharing through conventional means (e.g. mailing cd's or dvd's) with the sign-up list being on-line. The basic idea is that someone starts (seeds) a vine, made up of one or multiple shows, and sends it via mail to the first person who signs up. That person makes a copy for themselves and sends the ORIGINAL media on to the next person on the list. As more people sign up, it continues to grow and grow - hence the name "vine".

But it still wont solve our problem that vines are stalling out with a couple of folks out there. The only thing that will solve that problem is sending a PM to that person and getting a response before mailing the vine to them. I understand emergencies come up and things will back up and we are safe with most folks here but like I said there are a few people (i.e. markinthedark and j.straw) who have disappeared and it doesn't make sense to keep sending them vines. They can always jump back on the list if they want to come back you know? In my opinion, that is the biggest problem right now - vines being sent to people who for whatever reason are not participating any more. I am a little busier now than I was last year, but I can still manage to keep things moving in a reasonable amount of time. I am in the pipeline for about 20 vines, some of which I would have thought I would have by now. It is summer, and I know folks are busy. In general, folks should be cut some slack when emergencies and unexpected contingencies pop up. I would want folks to cut me some slack if I just disappeared. Really, it's the chronic and habitual offenders that ruin the vines. We might need to appoint a hall monitor or have a volunteer. I don't have the time to make that commitment but will help any way when I can.

Can we make sure we PM the next person on the list AND get a response from them before sending the vine along? If no response then try the next person on the list. This issue has become ridiculous. There are brand new vines out there that are already dead only 2 people into the list. "Escaping through the lily fields, I came across an empty space. We did lose our hall monitor when Mark vanished before our very eyes. So, we do need to be mindful of taking care of what we have here. Some folks will come and go, some of us have been around awhile - but we all have the same responsibility to take care of the music! May the vines continue to grow and flourish! This site is awesome and I really enjoy chatting with you all while beefing up my music collection! But I agree, there are "very few rules to guide", no but seriously there are only a couple of simple basic "rules" to follow and this site hums along really well. Thanks to everyone for making this place so special! "Escaping through the lily fields, I came across an empty space. It rainbow then exploded, left a bus stop in its place. Amen Stuman,
it is imperative for the CDs to survive, that they be protected! Please take care, some of this music may not continue to be available in this upgraded condition, if we need to respect the media and take means to ensure it will last for others to enjoy. If tapers treated their master recordings like the CDs are being treated right now, there would be nothing left to listen to. Please do your part. And I agree with ExploratoryData, please work on a vine turnaround of 4 to 5 days if possible. I am guilty of going slower that that on occasions, but if you can set that as a goal to work towards, this will keep the vine moving and other viners interested and involved. I have gotten some shows that I had only dreamed of as well as upgraded several others. The Vineyard has greatly enriched my collection of live music. And I have been blessed to be able to share a few vines as well. AND to restate, viners, communicate with one another! MarkintheDark did the vine a grate service with his 'policing'. We need to monitor ourselves and be responsible and work to share the music. Enough of my sermon. The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.

Mark in the Dark vanished plus others. We need folks like him who has the time to stay on top of the vines. I have told some heads (not here) to come over to this site--that this is one of the best kept little secrets. They have not come or lost interest due to the waiting. If you are patient and can hang around for the long haul, you will be rewarded. I estimate that 50 to 60% of my collection came from here. Many thanks.

That was perfect. Every once in a while we need to be reminded about being considerate for the other viners down the line.I also seem to notice that recently some people have just left the vineyard, so I also think it is a good idea to PM the person following you if they have been "inactive" recently before sending out a vine. Let's all do our best to keep this wonderful place thriving. "One watch by night, one watch by day If you get confused, listen to the music play"

we've had a request from people close to Brent to not vine that album, as there is some talk of releasing it. I don't know more than that but I think we need to honor it.

if somebody wanted to do a real public service they'd dig up the tape of the Seva benefit from about the same period at the BCT where Brent was an opening act. The only known recording of "Love Doesn't Have to Be Pretty," as I recall.

Very nice audience recordings of all shows, plus the official free soundboard of opening night. Thanks Phil ! I did the best I could with fades, but some are rather abrupt due to the fact that one song goes right into the next. Overall I think it turned out good. You might consider burning this in TAO instead of DAO - I added 1 second of silence at the beginning and end of each song to separate them, but TAO is still the way to go IMHO. My reasoning for deciding which versions to include is listed below: Day Tripper GD 06-25-85 Suggested by David Gans Come Together Dead 07-07-03 Suggested by a fellow CDead member. He said that he believed that Joan's super hot performance got this one going. Eleanor Rigby Jam JGB 02-12-80 One of very few. All are ragged. Chose this one as one of best. Tomorrow Never Knows GD 11/29/94 Suggested to me by someone on the CDead group I think. Blackbird Ratdog 11-09-99 One I had.... The two GD versions really sucked Get Back PLQ 10-16-00 Not played much, GD version very poor Why Don't We Do It In The Road GD 04-07-85 Well, it IS a Beatles song...less lame than the others (I was almost tempted to leave it off entirely) Hey Jude GD 03-22-90 *Complete version; Jude>Reprise patched together, dropping "Dear Mr. Fantasy" entirelly; There is a slight "hitch" between Jude and the Reprise but I left it as is to keep as much music as possible without including "Fantasy." I had originally thought of using the 3/1/69 version, but David Gans suggested this one as the better choice. Even though the '69 one has Pigpen, this one is better. Strawberry Fields Forever PLQ 02-08-02 Pretty hot version, although a bit hollow; it also features some interesting hints to Eleanor Rigby. Rain GD 10-09-94 I perused The Compendium Volume III and found this to be one of the better versions, which, upon hearing it, it is. DISC II Revolution GD 07-02-85 I listened to all of the versions, and this one shone above the rest. I could have sworn that there was a really good one from '90, but, when I listened, well, I guess I was mistaken. She Said Dead 07-07-03 Joan smokes on this puppy! Dear Prudence Reconstruction 7-8-79 Suggested here as a good version in lieu of the later JGB versions - it has pretty much what he played with the JGB, with horns, and back when he was healthy. All Too Much GD 03-26-95 Someone here suggested this one. I Want To Tell You JGB 03-08-87 *1 of 2 JGB times played; The '76 version is ragged which is a shame as Donna and Keith were part of the JGB back then. I to go with a JGB version instead of the GD versions as Jerry was in much better health. Also, the JGB allowed him to stretch out in a different direction. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds GD 03-17-95 Best version according to The Compendium Volume III. I Am The Walrus PLQ 09-01-02 - personal favorite, I attended and we believed that PLQ was not going to tour anymore.... While My Guitar Gently Weeps PLQ 11-30-01 Bitter sweet to hear this one as it was the day after George died. It was only played once; I wish they had included this in their repertoire, or at least pulled it out every so often as a surprise. Warren does this one "just exactly perfect." My notes on this . This is a sweet compilatoin here . something i picked up on LL. I converted and burned to CDR WAV. I did not change anything. (in regards to burn note above) Any Beatles - Dead fan should love this one I hope you all enjoy !! Many thank go out to everyone who contributed to this beutiful compilation !! Stu ..
