    July 23 - July 29

Late July finds us with a whole lot of 1974 material for you, plus a few other choice bits from 1966 and 1982.

The late July, 1974 Eastern swing is often overshadowed a little by the magnificent May and June shows, but our selections from July this week will reveal some masterful performances. From 7/25/74 in Chicago, we have two big jams, one from the first set and one from the second. First is this typically deep Weather Report Suite>Around and Around jam to end the first set, and also the heart of the second set, Dark Star>Slipknot!>Stella Blue. Dark Star was relatively rare in 1974 compared to 1972 and 1973, so it’s always a treat to hear one from 1974.

From the next show on the tour on 7/27/74 in Roanoke, VA, we have a couple of selections. Ending the first set is this long and very exploratory Playing In The Band. I still have not yet met a Playing In The Band from 1974 that I don’t like. What is very unique about this Roanoke show is that there is no big second set jam, but what they do play is a mini-jam, featuring this U.S. Blues>Jam>Promised Land. This is one of the few shows in 1974 that does not feature a second set jam that begins with either Weather Report Suite, He’s Gone, Truckin’ or Dark Star.

Lastly from the July 1974 tour is a trio of songs from 7/29/74 at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, the band’s first visit to future home of the Washington Capitals hockey team (they would begin play as an expansion team in October, 1974). From the first set we have Cumberland Blues and Scarlet Begonias, and from the second set we have this very mellow Peggy-O,  quite a bit different than the post-hiatus versions. All of these tracks from 1974 were recorded in stereo to _” analog tape running at 7.5 ips.

Jumping ahead exactly eight years to 7/29/82 at Red Rocks, we have the second set opening Cold Rain and Snow>Samson and Delilah, with Jerry absolutely shredding his solos on the latter. This, like all of tapes from 1982 save the New Year’s run, was recorded to cassette, bringing with it numerous technical issues, but oftentimes the cassette masters sound very good.

And speaking of very good cassette masters, we have the second set opening Feel Like A Stranger from 5/31/80 with a very good mix and excellent sound quality.

Also from July 29, 7/29/66 in Vancouver, BC specifically, we have the show opening Dancing In The Streets, and a nice medley of I’m A King Bee>One Kind Favour. These were not only the Grateful Dead’s first shows outside of the United States, but they were the first shows outside of California. Check in next week for a bit more of these Vancouver shows, plus a very cool story about the band’s visit north of the border.

Lastly this week, we have the opening trio from 5/5/78 in New Hampshire. As I’ve said before, this show falls under the radar, but hopefully it’ll gain a bit of a wider appreciation. We’re pleased to play Promised Land, Dire Wolf and a rocking Cassidy.

Be sure to check in next week for another taste of 1974, the aforementioned return trip to 1966, plus some great material from 1982 and 1989. As always, we encourage you to write with questions, comments, suggestions or requests. It’s always great to hear from you.

    Funkbeard beat me to it.
I was coming here to post a rememberance of Brent's passing 17 years ago this week. I never really had my doubts, but I'm glad somebody remembered him before I did. I miss Brent easily as much as I miss Jerry. Sean K.

This week is also the 17th anniversary of Brent Mydland's untimely passing. I pray he is "happy and at ease," that he has rested and moved on to the next life, continuing his work of summoning "wonderful sounds" to soothe the hearts and spirits of the living beings in the land. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!! Rest in peace.

for these Monday segments. Very, very much appreciated. It's receiving tidbits like these and the extra effort from the website to share them with us that has increased my likelyhood of purchasing more product from the Store. Thanks - your goodwill gesture makes me feel more generous.

I was hoping for some 7-29-74 all last week and sure enough you deliver! Also, the Slip! sandwich is tasty after a Dark Star builds and builds. (Ditto on 5-5-78.)

I can't say enough how grateful I am about this Tapers Section! And it's such incredible material too! I was hoping it would be possible to also play the Beat it on down the line from 10/22/67.Also I know there isn't much of '67 in the vault, but there are shows like 12/1/66 and 3/18/67 that I would imagine are in the vault and somehow MUST be released. Even if the sound isn't perfect, who cares. Thank you so much for the '66 and '67 material! Peace and love to you guys and all of my fellow dead heads!

Hi David! Ed, from Ottawa here! I just love the old stuff. If it exists, I'd love to hear anything from Toronto, or Montreal, August, 1967.

I've had a great sounding (one of the best) audience of this very good Dartmouth show, but getting nearly the entire show here over the last several weeks has been a real treat. Thanks, David, the Taper's section has just been fantastic.

Love it, love it, love it. Cassidy, Dark Star and Playing in the Band, WOW! Careful there, you could find yourself charged with irresponsible use of Joy, Bliss and Ecstasy. Any chance of Althea and/or Eyes of the World from the late 80s?

...shall we go, you and I while we can... David. Wouldn't it be cool to put the actual vault data base here on the site? I can't see why not... at least then we wouldn't be asking for stuff that's not there! BTW, at that Chicago '74 show, there was a mind numbing, skull cracking Seastones played at the break with the house lights up!!! I remember wearing sunglasses. Also, if there was an audience tape, you'd hear the drunks(beer was sold) screaming for the band to "rock 'n ' roll", which might explain the rather abrupt close to the show, and what may have been the only "Ship of Fools" encore ever.

The only show that I have with Martin and Joe is the second set of 09/17/73 at Syracuse. I would love to hear more with this particular horn section, either in the tapers section or an official release. I feel like the horns really add alot to the sound. I really enjoy the tapers section!!! Thank you very much!! Don

On July 27th, 2007 RChamberlain said:Thanks so much for the vault section! Wonderful to listen to music that I was unable to attend, due to the fact I was a little young to be attending Dead show in the 60's and 70's... The shows I did attend were from '81' to '95... The music that stood out for me were a 4/01/85 Portland Me. China-Rider. Most of the 1988 New years show and finally a show that I still think is some of the best music I have ever heard. The whole 09/26/91 Boston Garden show. This had Bruce Hornsby and the show started with a Space-Jam, then went into Jack Straw... Are there any nuggets in these? Or was I just imaging things!

This is a wonderful sight, and I'm a bit overwhelmed at the wealth of music here. I'm downloading right now in preparation for Jerry's 65th birthday celebration. Hope I can find one; if not, it'll just be me and the computer. Again, thank you.

If you get a chance checkout 10-17-94 @ msg. I know most d-heads poo-poo the '90's which really gets on my nerves b/c there have some TREMENDOUS shows througout the 90's. 10-14-94 had a 31 minute Scarlet/Fire!!! Please consider putting up a show, 1-17-94 at MSG-there's a 26 minute Eyes that is masterful, it wears you out in a euphoric way! Thanks-Peace Out

Hey David, howdy do!first, thanks for the weekly treats! second, can you tell me who wrote the song "I'll forget you" that Garcia coverd, I've only seen it listed as "copyright control" what ever that means. third, is there any other stuff from those compliments sessions that has not seen the light of day? Would love to check that out! last but not least, is there any way to send a message to phil or perhaps you might be able to forward? Not hey dude lets party or other such nonsense, just a question on modulus basses, since he would know, and dealers etc seem to be perhaps jiving me. I know he has always used modulus basses with "thru the body" necks, and I think I know why, but dealers are telling me that they don't make em that way anymore because it is too hard to join the carbon fiber necks to the wood bodies, yet I know his current axe which I believe he got in 2001 is most definetly a "thru the body". So I quess I'm wondering if he a) knows if this is really true or not, and b) is there really that big a difference, such that a humble cat as myself would really notice? Perhaps this has to do with Geoff Gould not being associated with modulus anymore? and also, I have read that on this current bass he switched from a bartolini active set up to EMG. Again, the dealers really push the bartolini set up, and have said that the EMG is a passive system, and so the bartolini is the only way to go which I don't necessarily agree with, so I quess Im wondering c) is this true and again what is the big difference in his opinion on this? I know he said that he is cutting back on bosting versuse cutting with his eq, but it seems like there would be a huge difference between active and passive? Woud love to get a more in depth answer about this subject than the brief description that I read... See my ole alembic is about ready for retirement and I really want a new five string and so I am real interested in checking out a modulus for the obvious reasons of the graphite necks etc--like playing at the top of a frosty 11k foot ski resort and then an hour later down in a hot club in the valley-- but they aint cheap especially for a poor working stiff. Thus, I am trying to do as much research as I can and who better to ask then the tone master himself, but of course out here in nobody land that is perhaps easier said then done, so if there is any way you could help a brother out and get me in touch I would be beyond grateful! hope you can help me out thanx ps, hey phil glad to hear your feeling better, look forward to seeing you out here in colorado in september. Also, thanks for vail shows back a few years it was so cool to see y'all in such a tiny lil place and right in our perverbial back yard! come on back, so all us freaks will have a good reason to come on down out of them there hills. pps, positve thoughts to M.K, "this darkness got to give"

That's nine extracts (17 songs, or 16 plus a Rhythm Devils if you like) from this one show on these Monday Magical Mystery Tours so far.... can't be much more (can I find a set-list?). Makes me wonder, how come this show was never a Dick's Pick or in the Download Series? Perhaps it was just too far down the list on both counts. But it would be good to have the whole show in one piece.

Dude, this new site rocks! I love all the cool features and whatnot, but I gots to say that this little triplet of sweetness that I am listening to is unbelievably cool. Who thought all this stuff we can do with computers would ever happen.
