Im starting to see many people on here who are wanting to start a collection. I have racks of tapes that I no longer listen too and with help from folks out here and a high speed internet connection I have started to get a new collection of my favorite shows on CD (after a flood took out most of my late 80s tapes) If your in the Portland/Vancouver area and want to start your collection, I would be willing to turn you on to a rack (or two) of cassettes. Each rack is 100 tapes and I have 1965-85 and 1991-95 with 9 racks (I think) remaing. Eric PS - I would consider helping folks outside of the PDX area but it would cost A LOT to ship these so keep it in mind before PMing me...

That is the stadium where the old LA Lakers played and it was quite a huge venue (for the time, anyway). That second set was an amazing selection: Samson, Ship of Fools, Estimated>Eyes>drums>Good Lovin', and then Terrapin>Playin'>Franklin's>China Doll> NFA>Playin'. They turned this big arena into a spinning top, with the pace and dynamics, all the grandeur of Terrapin into the familarity of Playin and into the joy of Franklin's into the delicate passion of China Doll into the centrifigal force of a rockin' NFA and then segue back to Playin' reprise. As we drove back north to make those Winterland shows and stopped at one spot on the highway (101, I believe) and it was a spot that the ocean's waves were smahing into the wall that was set into the shore about 30 feet below where we had parked. The ocean's spray from the impact would loft 25 feet above us with each wave's crash and then it would rain down on us as we grinned and recounted the show we saw, and talked about what the band would be playing next. It was at that point that I heard that thundering and drumming of the ocean on that wall and thought to myself how similar it was to the other force of nature that we'd witnessed earlier that evening. And then it was off to Winterland. And then I was able to hear the whole suite of Help>Slipknot>Franklin's on 6-9-77. What a time we had! (I really had to finish the story, it had to be done.)

I was at those 3 shows at Winterland. That was the summer of the breakout of the "Blues for Allah" tunes (album was released on 7-27-77) we got treated to all those new tunes like Fire, Estimated, Samson &, redone Dancin, Passenger, and of course Terrapin. Was on a road trip with friends and we first caught the 6-4-77 show at the LA Forum, for a preview of what was to come with that tremendous Winterland run. The shows at Winterland were in stark contrast to that huge "Fabulous Forum" (capacity 18,759) compared to Winterland's 5,400 capacity. Winterland was a real treat, small venue and a balcony that surrounded the whole place. Winterland also had a bar where there was a 'big screen' TV where they showed video of prior Winterland concerts that Bill "Uncle Bobo" Grahmn had filmed. You might go in for a dring and see a Airplane concert or Jimi Hendrix or whoever the cued up to view as you imbibed (and this was all before "Wolfgang's vault"). As I said, we were on a road trip and had sent word back to Heads back in Nebraska, about these June Winterland shows. Two friends told us to meet them at the Wharf Rat bar in SanFran at 1:30 on 6-7-77. They then hopped a freight train in Nebr. and "rode the rails" accross the plains, through the Rockies, in and out of mountain tunnels, (cool Colorado range) and then into the SanDiego trainyards. The then got in the "tube" to go unde the bay and get to SanFran. As we walked into the Wharf Rat from the side that faced the wharf, they walked into the place from a side door and we ran into one another like the 3 Stooges. Hooray!! We went up to the show and bought tickets, partied on the sidewalk until they let us in, and then were completely blown away by the band. I remember on 6-7-77 (anyone out there with 6-7/8-77 CD?), hearing Terrapin (for the second time) and then they segue into Dew. Phil dropped these bass bombs that propelled me backwards. It was like he changed the gravitational pull from horizontally down to a lateral atmoshperic 'shove' , until it felt like the breath was being pushed out of my lungs, and then I would gasp for breath again. The Dead pulled out the vista crusier repeatedly during those shows with wonders that left us slack-jawed and delights that made me laugh and cry. I recall Jerry doing some tuning from the "Close Encounters of a Third Kind" movie that had just came out that summer. Anyway, needless to say, it was a wonderful run of shows. alligator, sent you a pm.

Can anyone offer some assistance? And since we are sort of on the topic of tapes, I would be willing to give away my stash of shows. Most were recorded right from a DAT so the sound is great when cranked up. Just send me a mesage and let me know what you are looking for.

I accidentally deleted this one - it's from 1970, one of those epic 5-disk ones with staggered NRPS/Dead sets. At the beginning of the NRPS' song "Henry" they do the usual intro about how it's dedicated to weed smugglers. That's standard, but on the particular show I'm looking for, Garcia pipes up, "not if you just get stoned" and the New Riders guy affirms, saying that you've got to be one of the guys in the operation. Anyone know the date and venue for this?

I was listening to this one the other day and figured I could post a link for anyone to acquire. It's not a vine, it's @ megaupload. I hope it's cool, Marye, I've not seen anyone use this method of sharing on this site. To extract the archived files, you will need WINRAR, which is easy to get. Jerry just sounds great in this show, although it IS '94. Bobby plays acoustic on Uncle>Big River. Pretty sweet soundboard. Just follow the link... 10-01-94 Boston Garden, Boston, Ma. creampuffwar Go to the vinyard on this site. I came here a year ago with about 6 or 7 complete Dead shows on cassette tape that I got back in the early 90s. I basically had nothing. After coming to the vinyard a little over a year ago, I now have 150+ dead shows on digital CDRs (99% soundboard recordings). Nobody really trades "tapes" any more. Everything is in digital format now. One word of advice for the vinyard--patience. You must be patient. You basically "get in line" to receive stuff by mail, and depending on where you are on the sign-up sheet, you may wait months to get a particular show(s). New shows are posted frequently so you may get to be first in line to get it. After you make a copy, mail it to next in line. I have shows showing up in my mailbox weekly. Just this week, I got 9 shows and more is on the way. Most "newbies" who try it are not patient and drop out. If you can hang in there for several months, it will pay huge dividends. Right now, there are a few vines that have reached the last person on the list and are waiting for someone else to sign up and get it (no wait time). :-) I am lovin' it--happy times

Hi All. My first ever post! I live in the UK and have been a Dead fan for nearly 20 years. I guess that makes me a new starter compared to some folks on here. It took me a while but I saw the light in the end!!! I love all sorts of bands, especially jamming guitar bands, which brings me on to Guvt` Mule. I`m desperate to hear the Dead with Warren Hayes as a member!! Where can I get some of the latest gigs??The only "boot" live stuff I have to trade is a Ratdog gig from Newcastle upon Tyne, England a few years back. Rob Wasserman on bass. I do have quite a few shows by other bands. I will be grateful for any help....... Cheers

It is such a crisp sounding show, but (no offense to any tapers) the Aud tapes don't do it justice in my humble opinion. thanks! My email is afidelman@gmail.com

I am almost POSITIVE the Dead played a second encore after Casey Jones on 10/28/77. It was my first Casey, AMAZING, and I recall the Dead left the stage, the roadies started breaking it down, but the fans were going wild! We would not leave. The Dead finally came back out and played another. That is how I remember it to this day. But I can't find any evidence to back it up, as all tapes/recordings from that show say Casey was only encore. Anyone share my memory??? Was it a dream, or another show, or ??? Anyone with a tape to back me up?Thanks.

I too am one of the Old School heads who was reluctant to move into the digital realm. And I'm a techie! What forced the issue was that I also found fewer people interested in trading tapes. So I did the homework and got advice from others and haven't look back since. I still have about 200 of the 850 or so tapes I had, giving the others away to those in need. But you don't need to convert what you have. Most of it is available out there and will sound better. The easiest way to download is using a torrent app like UTorrent or others, where you add a download by clicking on the torrent link. The bt.etree.org site has tons of great quality shows and enough seeds to allow for reasonably fast downloads. Get the free application "Traders Little Helper", which will easily convert the various compressed file formats (shn, flac, etc.) to WAV (where you can burn to CD if your burner software can't decode the compressed formats), or there are plenty of others that will get you to MP3Pro or similar formats suitable for your iPod. The archive.org site primarily offers audience recordings available for download, but you can also stream the soundboard stuff and capture it with an audio program like CoolEdit Pro, etc. The learning curve isn't bad and once you do, you'll discover the bliss you found when first collecting those crispy XLII-S copies. And nearly everything can be done for free, except maybe the cost of the CD's - which are a hell of a lot cheaper than tapes :) I know have replaced most of all my favorite shows and have added tons more. My 80 GB iPod is stuffed with a couple hundred shows as well. Technology is our friend, just as it was the band's! Enjoy your eargasms!!

Like IRSampson, I also had a couple hundred Maxell and TDK gems in my collection. I went digital a couple years ago and would put any of the digital stuff I have against any of my old tapes quality-wise. There is not one drawback that I can think of, it's just that first step that is the hardest. Storage is a GREAT benefit. 1 hard drive can store an entire collection, while you can rotate stuff on your iPod. Luckily, there are folks on these boards and others who are happy to guide you through the process. The vines here helped point me in the right direction. I finally completed my leap into the digital age by dragging my cassette collection to the Chicago stop on the band's '09 Spring Tour and just handed them out. I've recently been posting shows here that I have uploaded to Rapidshare. These are clean downloads, free to those who wish them. Just copy the link to your browser, and your in business. I'm also willing to share my list with anyone who's looking - just PM me.
