WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

...just before the crash, apparently. Really exited about this. So is everyone else, from the way the site has slowed to a crawl. Also, one more vote for the Boston 5/7 show as my favorite of the four.

It's unfortunate that this website appears to not be able to handle orders right now. I went pre-order this set right after receiving the email about it and it keeps coming up with error messages, taking forever to load a page, etc. You guys need to have a site that can handle this traffic.

Agree with all who posted. Can't use web, phone order doesn't work. Very disappointing that dead.net doesn't want my hard earned money. Actually, no it's not. I have all of the SBDs from torrent sites, it's their loss.....not my chair, not my problem, that's what I say..... I miss Jerry, I don't miss corporate dead.net. All a friend can say is ain't it a fuckin' shame.....

No luck for the past hour+ trying to complete my order online, also tried the 1-800 number and it timed out on me TWICE in exactly 17 minutes each call. Their hold system craps out before the customer does! Heck of a note.

That's your PC, not the site. You either have over protective adware / malware protection software loaded on your PC, or your system is already infected by a virus. 5 420 left! Vguy - considering the same thing happened with 30 Trips, I am just counting on the same level of fun the next time a big box set gets released. :)

Those are my favorite shows from the May 77 box and the Winterland 6/77 box. I'd go for 5/17 and 6/7 next. But don't expect 77 to sound like 72-74. I like both eras, but for different reasons. Hope you'll come to like 77 too. Forgot to add: for me the finest spring 77 shows are Dick's Picks 29 and especially Dick's Picks 3 (5/19,21,22).

AudiophileReader, to my ears, it sounds like a patch, yeah, but what can you do but smile, smile, smile! I got my order in yesterday and I got the dead.net apology e-mail this morning too but I'm kind of amazed at all the love for Rhino. I quit reading and following the Comments in the purchase sections for a long time -- years -- because they all seemed to devolve into hate-ins basically demanding dead.net and Rhino people get chained to boulders and have their livers devoured daily and regrown nightly. Now it's dead.net and Warner on the rocks and Rhino saved the day. Out'a sight and blemish free! After thinking on it, this has actually been the most challenging but exciting purchase I've made in decades but just so no one gets the wrong idea I should call the 800 number and demand a refund for my 30 Days of Dead subscriptions, that'll teach 'em!

I don't mean to sound un-"grateful" but I need to ask a question that has been burning in my mind. I know it takes a lot of time (and money) to dig these jewels out of the vault, remaster them, and package them in these we constructed collector sets. However, one of my greatest loves of the Grateful Dead when Jerry was still around was the music was always "free" and easy to pass around. I feel like things have gotten really expensive since his passing, and it makes me sad. "For the faithful," perhaps you remember the Terrapin Station "Limited Edition" set from Cap Center on Phil's 50th birthday (3/15/90). It was released in 1997 and supposed to be a fundraiser for the construction of a Grateful Dead museum/theme park in California. I know I happily scraped up what, for a deadhead in his 20s with fresh college debt, seemed like a lot of money at the time to buy this set in support of the project. Heck, I would have bought several copies to support it, if I had the money at the time. It's now 20 years later, and everything that dead.net ever published about the venue seems to be unavailable. The promise of a venue designed "to recreate the Grateful Dead Experience via a rooftop dance garden, a 360-degree sound and light environment called The Wheel, and multimedia presentation arena called the Jerry Garcia Theater" seems to have gone up in smoke! However, the "limited edition" disks are still available here on dead.net, just a little cheaper than when they were sold under the promise of funding a "Grateful Dead Disneyland." Two decades later, the promise if forgotten, and nobody seems to care. I care. I dream of a Grateful Dead venue like was promised, and I wouldn't even balk at the prices being asked for these collections, if the money was going towards this project. Now that I am in my 40s with far more disposable income, I would probably buy just about every show in this website to help fund the project. Until then, I think I'll keep my money in my pocket and continue to enjoy the "free" options that my fellow heads share with me. Thanks, peace, and love, Floodwaker

I received a confirmation from rhino and grateful dead because of the confusion yesterday the confirmation from one did not come till today. I received a bank charge for both but if I view the orders one is with rhino and one is with grateful dead. Which company and order is correct or are both correct and did this happen to others.

No. They don't create a new order # series for each release. It just means your order # for tracking, customer service issues, etc. is 13740. Id be surprised if this sells out immediately.. but could be wrong. It looks like they added some edits late yesterday that do not allow to see how many are left.. It will sell out though, when nobody knows for sure. I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water, Sleep in Hallow Log.. then miss this release.

Came home last night at 1 AM and sailed right thru. I personally think the only problem with the site was 10,000 people hitting it at once. Like the scene in Airplane where all the reporters hit the phone booths at once and they fell over. (for the youths out there phone booths were used to make phone calls back in the caveman days :-) ) The free Scarlet -> Fire downloaded sounded great, made the tears roll down my face.

Was on the fence about this purchase. I have a copy of both Cornell and The Garden. The Garden quality is OK, but I always thought the Cornell quality was pretty darn good. Was able to download from the archive when it allowed you to do that sort of thing. Just listened to "Morning Dew" on RS website, and it gave me chills. Certainly made my decision to purchase real easy. I can't wait!!

Wow the future really is bright. So many possible releases, hope my wallet will cooperate. I would like for the Winterland March 77 run to be Normanized. These 3 May 77 releases have such fantastic artwork that I think I can finally get that DaP 21 cover out of my head. I'm sorry but that 21 cover "art" almost cheapens the music contained within that package. Going forward I would prefer a blank cover with a simple Dave's pick logo rather than these cartoons. Heck I had no problem with the old Ampeg red reel to reel boxes used for Dick's first 6. In the midst of that computer traffic meltdown I had no problem ordering this release. Placed an order yesterday around 3:30pm EST & had a confirmation email seconds later. Guess I got lucky

Ok, you made me pull out Dew. I too have a nice soundboard of Cornell and yeah, that Dew was great, can't wait to hear the "official" one. The Scarlet-Fire they gave out sounded better that the copy I have. The sound was more open and airy, the soundstage from my computer speakers (Bose) was about 3 foot wider. This will be a nice set. I only hope I live long enough to see all the shit released, we still have a long way to go.

Like a fool, I tried to order within the first few hours with no success. This morning when I woke, I was successful in placing an order for one box and that was before I showered, shaved and had breakfast. My usual breakfast consists of cold muesli from Bob's Red Mill with milk, bananas, blueberries, strawberries and the occasional blackberries and/or kiwi-fruit.The rest of my workday was happy and filled with joy! Several hours later as I write this comment, I am wondering what size of box this will be. Will it be an oblong box, similar to the May 1977 box? That would be a match. Or smaller where the individual show cases are the same standard CD case size, i.e., Dave's Picks size. Or like the Spring 1990 boxes. The hardest part is the waiting. When I first read the description of this set and the release date of 5/5/17, I thought "that's just around the corner." These 12 weeks are gonna seem so long, "time is going to slow down."

I ordered yesterday as soon as I got the announcement mail and my order went through straight away, no problems at all. I did notice something strange, however. I was offered the choice of paying with a credit card or through PayPal. As I am in Europe, exchange rates are worth keeping an eye on, and credit cards give a more favourable rate than PayPal (Credit card companies make their moolah in other ways)so I wanted to use my credit card. The first piece of information required was, not surprisingly, the card holder's name. What was surprising was that there was no field available to enter my name. Sensing that this was not going to end well, I then opted for the PayPal option and everything went just fine. When I got the confirmation screen, I stayed there for a short while to make a screen shot just in case. When I hit the "Continue shopping" button, I got the 503 message and the site had crashed. That was about 12:10 Dead.net site time (what time zone is that?). I then checked my mail and the confirmation mail had already arrived.

....I had the same compulsion Guss, but only bought one. I have this issue every time a limited release comes out, but I never buy more than one of anything. I just want the music, I'm not into making a buck....

Born Cross Eyed - Funny, I was wondering the very same thing. That is my only beef with the 5/8 tapes that we all have (the audience patch at the beginning of Minglewood). My assumption was that would be a thing of the past with this release - but who knows, I guess. Will be a bummer to hear a damn patch on the CD! Fingers crossed.

A Parody. Sung to the tune of Looks Like Rain. I woke today, logged onto Dead.net, to buy the new box set. It was gone, my heart was filled with dread. It might not be available here again. But that's all right I'll just buy it on ebay. And brave the storm to come for it surely looks like a thousand dollars. Did you ever waken to the sound of my wife seeing the credit card bill? And think from her cries you were listening to us making love. Well you know making love is the last thing she's thinking of. She's only trying to hit me again and again. I don't want a second hand set or the mp3 download. So I'll just buy it on ebay with my credit card. And brave the storm to come, for it surely looks like a thousand dollars, seems like a thousand dollars, feels like a thousand dollars, ohhhh it's a thousand dollars.

While I would be happy with any of the choices available on that list, the two at the top of my wish list would be: 5.26.73 Kezar Stadium and 6.11.76 Boston Music Hall. I'm looking forward to this new box. I haven't heard these shows in awhile. It's been over 10 years since I listened to Cornell. Buffalo is the only one I currently have on my phone. If the sound on these is as nice as Dave's 21, I'm gonna be shakin' my bones.

Cool article on Jerry's "Sans Souci". Nice to know Jerry had such a sweet crash pad. The writer is obviously a Deadhead. I mean "Love is like the April rain that makes the harvest grow" is a pretty obscure Hunter lyric (Yellow Moon).

If the taster of 'Scarlet/Fire' is anything to go by, this is going to be special. The sound is insane for a 40 year old live show and the playing is magical. This sounds better than some studio albums. Betty really knew what she was doing!

Finally!! Who ever called this run CONGRATS but I have three questions.1. I know he said 100 shows and I'm new with all this but does this mean this stash is from at least 69-79? I'm confused but I think Dave makes it official this whole stash of tapes is priority number 1. Sorry 80's+ fans.Hope I'm incorrect on this.I don't mind a change of arrangement eras. 2. I know this is special but compared to 77 and 78 box set's. is this price higher for the switch in distribution(which is worth the extra cash in my opinion. Dap21 was crazy quick compared to the Cozet place.)or the awesomeness of the deal and these shows.(My first two downloads from archive. 3. I know it's been posted before but didn't Dick say even if he had the tapes he wouldn't release Cornell because of taper tapes being traded? I'm happy all us crazy folk get closure. I pinched myself and got a confirmation of purchase so this has to be real. Be Safe and enjoy the weekend especially if your in Maryland or West Virginia.
