    I find your post very interesting. There are certain interpretations of songs that, for me, go beyond music, which are not only very good music, but awaken something rare in my mind - but not systematically. A bit like a mystical experience. For me, the pieces of Cornell that we talked about are sometimes open doors to these magical moments. As for my English, I use Google's translation tool!

    A Parisian Deadhead greets you. You seem to know Paris. When I attended my first Dead concert (at L'Olympia in Paris), I was an 18-year-old boy. I am now an old man who sometimes walks in the Jardin du Luxembroug. At my next walk along the banks of the Seine, I will think of you.

    That was a really good and interesting description of the Cornell Scarlett/Fire. I should take some English lessons from you. Those Scar/Fires and Morning Dews from Cornell are my favorites too, and are mostly what makes Barton Hall unusually good for me. Like Keith said also, I find the post '71 St. Stephens to be a bit ponderous, and just lacking the crackling edge of the earlier ones, though still plenty worthy on 5/8. I find that there are certain and a limited number of Dead tune versions that transcend what is normally just music to me, and become what seems to me more like a journey, or a place they take you along to, which can vary from listening to listening. Not really in a trippy way, but this place is rare and built inside the mind, and goes beyond the normal listening experience. I think the first time I experienced this was the Dark Star sequence on one side of my early LP of Live/Dead way back when. It doesn't happen every time I listen to those type of tunes' versions, but when it does, it's what makes this band different than any other to me. As much as I like a lot of different versions of Scarlett/Fire, when I listen to every note and phrase, and loudly with earphones locking out other distractions, the Barton Hall version is the one that brings this to me most uniquely. Of course, for others on this board, your mileage may vary.

    Bertha from Buffalo gets a lot of attention on Heady Version. Never heard it. Like Gollum, I've had these dhows, but don't lite to them. I did check out Scarlet / Fire, and it sounded hot, no doubt; I just didn't find it to be leaps and bounds above others - bu that could change once I hear the Full Norman a binch of times. There was also a time when I listened to the 3 Morning Dews from Spring '77 in order a few times (5/8, 5/22, and 6/7). They were all great, I recall, and I believe the closing flutter of guitar strumming went on a bit longer at Cornell; however I don't remember feeling like it was that much better than the other two. But that being said, I've still yet to give Cornell an extended study, and I know shows grow on us with repeated listening. I'm hoping that Cornell ends up having the best version of every song played there, by the time I'm into it full boar. Will Brown-Eyed Women really top DP 29, DaP 1, and DaP 12? Tall order, but I'm hoping. Will I find something exceptional about Estimated Prophet that holds a candle to the 1978 versions, which IMHO are much better on a good night than their '77 counterparts. Will I enjoy St. Stephen? I've never really enjoyed the post-hiatus versions as much as '69-'71. They're mostly throwaways in my mind, neither transformative nor exciting. If I listen to the Ladies and Gentlemen's version side by side with any other post-hiatus vesion, I'm always floored by '71, and bored by post-hiatus...but I'm hopeful for Cornell. I have a feeling the magic will be similar to DaP 1, which is how 5/5 was described: sum is better than the parts of the whole. Not sure if my comments came off as critical of Cornell, but if so, what I'm really trying to say is that I sm really looking forward to it, and that hope it delivers in spades! I'm really looking foreward to Buffalo. Help / Slip! / Franklin is such a kick-ass opener, and the rest of the 1St set is full of my songs. The 2ND set Cones A Time im interested in, and even the Sugar Mag / UJB is supposedly much better than other '77 renditions. I think I'm going to enjoy Boston a whole lot too (I hear the Mississippi Half-Step is one of the all time best, and I think we get a rare '77 Wheel, which is one of my favorite post-hiatus performed tunes). Jimbo - I also love DaP 18. It truly realizes the full potential of that year. I would say it's in my top 5 Dave's Picks. I find the shows hit or miss in '76. I felt 30 Trips missed, for me at least. Very flat sound and I guess flat performnce up until end of disc 2 / and parts of disc 3, where I recall some cool jamming.

    I totally agree with you, JimInMD. Many Dead concerts are "the best". Cornell is one of those (and not the least). When I listen on December 31, 1972, it is the best concert I know. When I listen on August 27, 1972, May 19, 1974, or the first concert I attended (May 4, 1972), it is always the best concert. And there are so many others ... Thank you for the original Morning Dew!

    5-8-77 is not overrated
    It's on the pedestal where it belongs.But it's a big pedestal and there is room for other shows too. Like many people posted a few weeks back, it was the best sounding cassette tape in the collection and the show was smokin'! Eventually other good sounding cassettes came along, and eventually I was getting metal cassettes that were 1st or 2nd gen from DAT, but some were shows where the band sounded like an orchestra on Valium (great analogy Alain). I'm ready for this Box.....but May 5 is a long way away. Heinz ketchup song: "anticipation, it's making me wait" Deadbase 50: I thought it was sold out but it's on this site for $89.99.

    I will blow this quote.. but I think its in McNally's book. That of David Crosby who referred to Grateful Dead improvisation as mid-air, real time sculptures. Works of art. As for Cornell being over-rated? There's so much hype around the show its hard to say it is not deserved. I always interpreted comments of hype vs. hyperbole to mean not that Cornell is over-rated, but more this is what they did night after night.. Perhaps there are many shows that are as good as Cornell. In other words, the hype, legend and lore is deserved.. its a great show, but there are a lot of great shows and arguably many that are as good, perhaps better. Fair statement? Anyway.. great post, I had to chime in and support it. That Scarlet Fire is one of the great ones.. and I've never met a Morning Dew I did not like. If anyone out there has not heard Bonnie Dobson's original, its worth knowing at least where this song originally came from.

Born Cross Eyed: Curious about the box details too. Cool if it matches the size of the first May ’77 box. According to Cornell Press, the 200 page hardback book that comes with (in?) the new box is 5.5” by 8.3”. My May ’77 box measures 5.95” x 7.75” x 2.05” so, if the book's “in” the box. . . Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe a Dr. Rhino “Box Opening” video? Onward!

Fluffua 01: "I know it's been posted before but didn't Dick say even if he had the tapes he wouldn't release Cornell because of taper tapes being traded?" Yeah he said it, but never underestimate Dick's propensity for hyperbole. He contradicted himself through the years, but only in the name of extreme enthusiasm which I always found to be endearing. When old Dick started I think one of his primary goals was to get stuff released that was unknown to the trading community at large. Dick's 1-3 were exactly that. You have to consider the context of the times. Pristine SBDs were rare and much less accessible. Most of them that turned up commonly in collections were sourced from the Bettys leaked through the storage locker auction. The internet fundamentally altered those circumstances greatly. Dick's thinking was "everyone has it" but now everyone really has everything; at least access to all that circulates. There is unknown stuff out there but of what quality (performance and sonic) compared to these landmark shows that "everyone has". God rest his soul, but Dick said a lot of stuff that just no longer holds water or perhaps never did.

.. their system crashed while they entering my info - after Rhino's system crashed twice while I was trying to place the order online early this morning. I got the order number via email - but I won't believe it until I get the CD set. On a side note - the name & address on my account was completely messed up. When Rhino took over order fulfillment they had my name down as my sister's name because she ordered the Dick's Picks 2017 subscription for me. That explains why I was getting emails addressed to her, but she was getting the merchandise. Good thing we live nearby. I never had this problem in the past when she ordered some Dead gift for me. The C/S rep also gave me the name and phone of Rhino's C/S manager - but I called him so I could get the correct info on my account, but I got a voice mail. I tried to get the info on my account corrected three times in the past - heck - I was given "Escalation Numbers" which Rhino/Warner Bros says is a big deal - but it obviously isn't. They really need to hire someone that doesn't frack everything up - like the previous order fulfillment company they used.

Me and a couple of friends had been following the band on this tour since the Spectrum shows in Philadelphia. Barton Hall way basically a glorified gymnasium. About the size of an indoor basketball court. No seating. After the show we went back to the rear entrance and waited for them to come out. A light snowfall was swirling around, big billowing flakes blazed like white fireflies as they caught the parking lot lights. Two black stretch limos were idling by the door. There weren't any other fans around, just some crew and university officials.The door swung open and they all tumbled out. Each one of them was carrying a black attaché case. The band had been running their own label for awhile by now and we'd bought most of our tickets for this tour mail-order through the Grateful Dead office in San Francisco. None of us were speaking up so I did: “We've got first row for Buffalo tomorrow night!" I blurted out to none of them in particular as I held them up. “Oh yeah? Lemme see them" Phil said. I handed all four to him. Bill, Keith and Donna had gotten into one of the stretches and left. Looking them over, he asked: “Did you get these from our office?" “Yeah, we did. Mail order" I responded. Phil had handed a couple of them around to Jerry and Bob. Commenting to the others, Jerry remarked: “Well at least something's working" They all chuckled. I told them what a great show this night was and, for some reason repeated that the tickets that they were holding are for the first row in Buffalo. Bobby said: “Let me see all those" and gathered them up. Jerry and Phil said goodbye and piled into the limo. Bobby slid in behind them, closed the door and they started to speed off, with our tickets! We ran after them yelling for them to stop. After a few yards, the limo stopped and the rear window dropped down as we caught up. We could hear them laughing riotously as Bobby's arm emerged holding the tickets, splayed out like a hand of cards. “See you tomorrow" he said though his laughter. Edit Reply

wondering if anyone listened to the morning dew and compared it to your own copies? Is it just me or is jerry's guitar slightly undervolumed in the new mix? I have recordings of cornell and the night before and after. I think I have a crappy copy of New Haven somewhere. On the fence if they changed the mix too much

After last year's '78 box, this one was assured, the easiest prediction of any release they've ever made. Still nice to see it in three dimensions...well, two at the moment. Dave said 100 shows, from the years '71, '72, '73, '76, '77 and '78. They're not limiting the 'Betty' tapes to these big special releases and boxes, the Boston '73 and Felt Forum '71 Dave's Picks are both 'Betty' tapes too. This is all as I understood it from watching the video. Would love to see any and all of the May 1973 shows released, but beyond that...? I could easily do with what we already have of the '80s and '90s and limit releases to '60s and '70s shows. Especially this year's Dave's Picks...

I think this will sell out sooner rather than later. Book sounds cool, and I imagine prices for this will rise quickly on the cursed Ebay down the road. (Still want my Dave's Picks 5 and 9, but too pricey for this Head.) I did just buy a second box for my older bro' who saw a lot of shows in the early-mid 80's with his wife. He's going through some rough times too, and I always feel the Dead add a healthy perspective to living life in general. (Topic for another time.) We are a blessed community to have all these reels returned. Enough of the "vault is running low" talk and "Dick got all the good picks first" chatter that have been present on these boards from time to time. How much things can change so quickly. Life is very good for Deadheads right now! Dave's 21 was the first of the released prodigal son reels. It's my favorite DaP yet, and that's saying a lot. (Of course, the most recent release is often my favorite, but this time I believe it's the real deal.) Peace out! Thanks to all involved! Jerry, we still miss you, but the fans and communities you left behind still cherish the music and love you! Be kind, all! Peace and out!

I have a kayak paddle named Sans Souci. It was custom made and you typically put your name and the name of the paddle on them. Its absolutely beautiful with woodwork like one of Jerry's custom guitars. So pretty I almost never use it..., don't want to bang it up rocks. Edit: wow.. the post I replied to is like 20 down now, its a reply to VGuy and Gullum re: article attached showing Garcia's old house in Stinson Beach is for sale.. This thread is active for some reason.

Happy friday folks. Well I'm satisfied. I vented a wee bit after spending what seemed like an eternity to place my order. Got through. Order placed. TPTB acted quickly and have sent out at least two email updates that I know of. All good things. Very much looking forward to the long weekend and this box.

Somewhere around the end of the 90's San Francisco denied the request for a permit to build the Terrapin Museum/Theme Park.At least that's what I heard/read back then. And yes, you can still buy Terrapin Limited but I don't know if they pressed more copies or if these are still part of the original 50,000 run.

Yes! Yes!! Yes!!!We all had a feeling this was coming. It's just so right, with just exactly perfect timing. This feels like some great pinnacle of collecting, does it not? ... Brothers and Sisters ... Betty's Barton is Back !!! Yes, I am excited, can you tell? Such a killer trio of shows, with 5/5/77 to boot. I can't wait to hear how these sound! I don't usually bite on the big boxes. But this one, how could you say no?

I've got to say as I looked through those pictures, read the creative descriptors and envisioned all of the happenings and things that unfolded in that house. I just kept hearing this cackle. This Cackling laugh and fast talker. I got to say my heart swelled not only at the views but envisioning being a fly on the wall back in the day. What an amazing property. Thanks for sharing. Sixtus P.S. I always wondered what became of the Terapin Limited project. I similarly recall purchasing that one back in the day and being enthused about some kind of permanent living GD Experience in the works. It's current status and whereabouts as reported saddens me

Your figure assumes everyone from the artists to the guy working in the mailing room to the manufacturers the producers worked for free. Add to that the typical numbers the major entertainment industry wants from a project and what all the Dave's, box sets etc actually generate and we should be thanking Warners Rhino for even bothering

1st I'm happy we both live in a country that unlike any other country in the world guarantees us through the 1st amendment the righ to disagree freely on this or any other issue. 2nd I'm equally happy we live under a system that likethankfully numerous others in the world are able to get those grilled cheeses without some individual deciding I make too many sandwiches or that a certain item is frivolous and the economy should make only socially responsible items for example Mozart is much more responsible therefore that's what those who know what's best for us decide should be available aka a command economy

....personally, grilled cheese sandwiches and a beer were always on my radar after a show. If there are tomatoes in the sandwich, even better. Multi grain flaxseed bread please....

I bought two Dave's pics number 19 Honolulu Hawaii, gave it to my friend for his birthday, he was ecstatic him and I have been to dozens of shows together, Worse came to worse you could sell it and eBay for $150 just to burn the ass of the jerks selling them for $500 . I never sold anything on eBay before so I imagine they take their cut , and then you have to pay for shipping, so maybe $160 good luck making your decision .

I concur w/ the panel- it is excellent news to finally get a proper Cornell '77 release.I was able to procure my copy early this am. Considering the vast amount of monies we fans have given to this band, over the years, it is unacceptable to have a non-operational web host/ web vendor system for these releases. Hope everyone get an opportunity to buy their copy prior to "sold out" status.

I agree. Encroached never felt right. Kind alike a pair of jeans that wear too tight.I pulled out Cornell today, gave it a listen. I can see why some say it's over rated. I can see why some say it's the pinnacle. And I am glad this is happening. We have all tossed in thoughts about this over the years, but now it's actually in the pike. Seems strange in a way. The box with the other shows however has got to be antipated like a childhood Christmas morning. I have not heard any of the others, so that's got me very curious. The 78 box is still giving me the grins. Great energy in that collection to my ears. Now can 6.10.73 be in the works I wonder?

....GOAT? I'll throw my ballot in that hat. Haven't heard it in a long, long time. Shame on me. Three Jerry peaks in the final jam, every one different, just like Lemieux pointed out. Stunningly beautiful. I know everyone has different tastes in music, but if one doesn't like, or appreciate the audio art going on here, you're lost friend.....chumdead, unfortunately I cannot offer any help. Try a different player maybe? Tight jeans bobaloo? That's my problem lately. Didn't think it would pertain to you. Congrats on shedding the weight brother....

This pic was from a beautiful sunset on Captiva Island. It was the one and only time I saw the Green Flash happen. I was very happy that day as a lot of folks never see it with their own eyes. It was exhilarating!

I could be completely wrong but I read the 1st post about WB/Rhino making $2,100,0000 as a slap at them for making a profit on this release as a number of people like to do. As I 1st mentioned that figure was the total gross without taking into account any costs. My 2nd response was to you saying they still made a lot of let's be honest money on this. As I said in the land of the free we can disagree and when on occasion happens here someone opines that too much money is being made whether by the Dead/Rhino or on that fantastic site for collectors ebay the libertarian in me sometimes not all the time feels the need to point out that transactions freely arrived at between 2 parties are what the US is all about.I resist strongly calling a non coercive agreement evil and it's not my right to tell you or anyone what value you should place on your property. I just paid $150 for a near mint German version of Zappa's Freak Out due to my obsession with collecting all versions of Verve Zappa. Was I ripped off? I don't think so though many would think me nuts for paying 20 times the original cost of a used record. I thanked the owner he had what I wanted Freak Out and I had what he wanted ...money.An agreement freely arrived at. If as is possible I misinterpreted your meaning I apologize and leave my comments for those who do believe free transactions are evil Peace

Listening to Dave's Picks 21 and Winterland November 1973 both have comments from Bobby and Phil about spiders and snakes. Bobby sounds like a freak and Phil like a Mad Scientist haha Also some fun banter / announcement from Phil ~ Dave's Picks 16 that made the cut ~ informing the audience about a smoke fest in April Some of the most interesting banter from a show for me is from 4.3.70 From this new set, most excited to hear the Boston Garden show (song selection is primo) and Buffalo (had got this in the Jeebs Stash and haven't spun this one in a long time) also pumped for another May 77 "Sugaree" and "Scarlet ~> Fire" double dose This set is going to be hot, just as the other May 1977 box set

Download VLC media player. This media player, plays just about anything, and will certainly play the scarlet>fire digital download mp3 file. For the person who asked for suggestions. Peace.

After scoring a DP 34 for under $40.00 total cost I'm fired up for more '77 when BOOM! comes the email about the box. Damn if I wasn't on line for 7 hours (7 hours 7 minutes?) before getting through. Come this May, it will all be forgotten. Give me more Scarlet-->Fire!

Looking at disc two of Buffalo 5/9/77, 3 short songs.....it seems like an opportunity where they should have included the remainder of the Pembroke Pines 5/22/77 songs not included on Dicks Picks Vol. 3. Minus the last three shows of the Palladium run (of the 5 shows between 4/29-5/4/77), the only other shows of the month yet to be officially released by my reckoning are 5/18/77 Atlanta and 5/26/77 Baltimore to complete the entire month of shows (plus the Pembroke Pines outtakes). I imagine between the remainder of unreleased May and April 77 shows, they could easily put out another box or two from this Spring tour. ...ok....back to advocating for more '80's and '90's releases....DaP volumes 23 and/or 24....perhaps recently returned early Brent era Betty Boards...

Hey Spacebro - My guess is that the remaining May 77 shows will come out individually. By my reckoning, 5/4/77 is one of the two shows from 1977 they don't have in the Vault. In the video, Dave mentioned that 6/4/77 is not in the Vault (never will be as it was not recorded on SBD), then he cryptically said there is one more show missing. On the list of Betty Board shows, 5/4/77 is not among them, so my guess is that one won't show up as a release. (And as some of you know, that kills me because, contrary to Dave and most others, I hold the 5/4/77 Comes a Time as the pinnacle of that song). I do see though that shows like 10/2/77 (Casey Jones!!!) and 10/29/77 (makes a case for best of the year) are among the returned Betty's. (If anyone thinks it's a show other than 5/4 that's missing let me know, also sorry if that's been covered below, I have not been able to keep up). Last comment: I think the price is quite fair for this box - the Cornell book sounds like a cool extra, for one thing. But let's face it, if they charged 20 bucks more, most of us still would have bought it.

I missed that! What is the haul...? "perhaps recently returned early Brent era Betty Boards..." On the cost of this box, this is the first box I have purchased (there is so much good out there that is shared by really nice folks). I only subcribe to Dave's Picks and I do buy some individual shows, here at dead net, and also Amazon... But in this case, I really didn't think much at all about it, and just went for it! I was lucky, I guess, in that I missed the email, saw it Friday morning and only and a couple hiccups, but not too much of a problem, compared to the horror stories i have perused... I do hope the "book" is published on time, it indicates publication on April 11th, I know from my day job, publication dates are not a always a sure thing... and I don't see a separate ship if the book is delayed... anyway, spring-like weather in the philly burbs this weekend

I haven't read all the responses, but see that (not surprisingly) the subject of the cost of the box and whether it is "fair" has come up. My impression from what I've read in the past and from Dave's talk is that they had to buy the masters from whomever had them. If that is the case, and especially with all the hype, er interest in, the Cornell show, that price tag, with years of lawyers wrangling, could have been pretty substantial. I'm not sure if that has been mentioned here or even if it's true.
