News of True Love to all, O.K. so the Dead are on tour (#@!#!) and our finances are tight (transitioning to be a teacher). We have suspended all concert spending for the time being. Well on Saturday I tell my wife that the Dead are on tour....and she says......"You should go.". That was all I needed to hear.....weeeeeee.........happy, happy, happy.....I am so keyed up for this event. We are going..........Buffalo April, 21st, 2009....oh baby...I'm like a kid thinking about Christmas. The Hillside Festival
Hi Jodster, I highly recommend the Hillside festival in Guelph, Ontario. Details are on the web. The music is outstanding as are the people and the entire event. It happens over 4 days at the end of July. It is at Guelph Lake Conservation area (swimming too!). It is great for friends, kids and families too! The year before last a buddy and I stumbled apon a tribute to the Band that was incredible. They have very good musical acts from around the globe, are very environmentally friendly and the vibe is just great. People have bonfires throughout the campgrounds and guitars and drumming roll through the trees into the night. If you have kids they have a great play area too! Anyway, well worth experiencing! Talking about Watkin's Glenn, The Band at Watkin's Glenn is a great CD. Apparently the Allman Brother's and The Grateful Dead were their too (early 70's I'm guessing). I would love to get ahold of the Dead's set (and the Allman Brother's) for that festival. All the Best, Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat

Gros sourires, Kirsten

Hi Richard and K, Thanks to the handy "Bing translator" I was able to decifer your coded messages. Richard, where did you paint the lightning bolt!? K, I see Furthur are playing in Buffalo. Sounds like your going and maybe to Ithaca too! I am jealous again. Happy for you, but sad for me......not too sad really, actually quite happy but would like to go too..... Oh well, I'll have to just keep playing and listening for now. I keep playing with some guys in my neighbourhood. One of them has a feeling that we might end up a GD cover band. :) K, so you're a teacher (please don't mark my grammer too harshly!). Well so am I, though not officially yet. Today, I just finished helping a number of first graders with their reading - I loved it!!!!! I've been doing that once a week for a couple of months now. I'm also volunteering at the boys and girls club once a week. Just started helping a ninth grader a couple of weeks ago with his Biology. Now I just need to figure out which program route I want to persue. I'm hopeful my volunteering experiences will point the direction more clearly than I see now. My kids are 8 and 6 now and my wife is currently at teachers college. I have had enough of the business world, in one sense its amazing I've hung in so long (but that is a long and complicated story). I plan to be attending teachers college in 2011 - I want to be there now, but our finances won't allow for this....I must be patient. Oh well, "they" say good things come to those who wait...although they also say he who hesitates is lost......so I guess I'll just have to chart my own path (much more fun anyway). Keep well out there, Sending love and wishing for all the good things, Playing in the Tower with Eyes on Fire in El Paso with a Cat P.S. It's just a box of rain I don't know who put it there; Believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare. And it's just a box of rain or a ribbon for your hair. Such a long, long time to be gone and a short time to be there.

Richard - photos SVP!! Playin - glad to hear you're on a great path. Teaching is a very rewarding way to contribute to society. Kids always appreciate an open minded mentor, who lets them explore their own interests while supporting them in learning what's required. Sounds like your heart is in it so I know you'll do wonderful things. I hope there are more jobs in your region than in ours... the climate is a bit tough and competitive right now in Ontario in general. Good luck! =) I wish I could smuggle you all away to the shows. We'll see how we do on Monday for the presale. I don't know if there's a chance in hell of getting Cornell tix, but we've gotta try! Do let me know if you're ever in the Toronto area, won't you? It'd be great to meet up and trip around a bit. Love, K BTW - check my blog lately?

Hi guys, Well, I decided to take a chance... instead of doing the online presale thing, or trying to wrestle with the thousands of people who will be clogging up the phone lines trying to get tix to Cornell on Dec 12, I mailed in my order. I noticed that Cornell was the first online presale to sell out. It's a Sunday at an historic venue, and the tickets are half the price of the rest of the tour. i hope I made the right choice - decorated my envelope and everything. Wish me luck! I'll let ya know if they arrive in the mail in late Jan/ early Feb. I figure, it's worth a try. And if it works out, bonus! It's the best arrangement for me, since Monday is Family Day and I wouldn't have to miss work, like I would for Buffalo. I love you guys! Keep checking in.

Hi Gang, Well I'm smiling yet again. Thanks K for the link. Sure enjoyed reading through that again (especially the Dead's Rothbury Play-by-Play). The mentioning of when the band really took off. Reminded me of that feeling from this year's show in Buffalo (April 21st). It was during Eyes of the World......I was so overwhelmed with positive emotion/feelings and lift off effects I just sat sat down and let it wash over me.......WOW!!!!! I will never forget it! Hi Playin, Richard, et al I was thinking about what you've been posting, Playin, re: not having a GD cover band to listen to out there in the wilds of Lake Huron, and jamming with friends, perhaps leading to a GD band. It takes me back to my first band, which was a GD cover band here in Peterborough, called Zen Again. I also put together a project named after the fictional GD in Kesey's Sailor Song: the Dreadful Great. I've been playing GD music for like, 13yrs now, and mostly at home and around campfires, but I'm always threatening to start up another project. Anyhoo, I was thinking that a little outdoor gathering might be just the way to meet you kind folk. Looking ahead to summertime, I thought I could host a party here in Peterborough - an almost somewhat halfway point btwn Montreal and Lk Huron... and then I thought about group camping. I always like coming to Lake Huron - what part of the Lake are you on, Playin? Pinery, Kincardine, or closer to the Bruce? I have cool farmer friends in Grey County, too. We teacher-types are more available come summertime... so maybe we could do a little camping and jamming to get properly introduced. I know it's tricky to get around with kids, so maybe it'd be fun to come closer to you. And a Montreal road trip would be fine, too. Just thought it might be nice to find a way to bring us together. Have a super great day, you friendly freaks! Love, K

Well, I found out yesterday that there was an additional charge for the mail order tix that I didn't include. I looked everywhere for that info, but the GDTSTOO page must have not been loading because of overuse. Anyway, I was feeling a bit defeated about that when I realized that tix would go onsale today. I expected to be hitting "refresh" for an hour or two, but I got our 2 tickets on my first try!!!! Me and my man will now definitely be going on our version of a romantic Valentine's vacation, weather permitting. Oh, I am so relieved... and happy!

Playin....... hows tricks ??? Just noticed some talk about you living near Lake Huron. I live near Mildmay on Hwy # 9, we are about 45 min to Kincardine and I have been here for about 10 years. Love the beach at Kincardine, Cypress and the grotto in the summer. krs10.......Can Heads gathering sounds like a fun idea. I have a 2.5 acre property here with lots of room for camping if anyone wants to come for a visit this summer. Beaches and parks close by but not alot to do in the general vicinity ( surrounded by corn fields in summer ). What was the extra fee you forgot to include in your mail order ??? ( postage ???). I also sent in a neat envelope for Buffalo drawn by my daughter again ( she got me 6th row center for Buffalo last spring ) hoping for some more great seats. Hope you all are doing great..............peace................Chris :)

Chris! Great to hear from you. I like that even though I was confused as to Playin's geographical whereabouts, you came through with the Lake Huron connection. Happy accident! Playin, I think I assumed that your reference to Lk Huron in your profile referred to your residence. Maybe in spirit... Glad there's some interest in getting together. Maybe we should take Chris up on his offer. It seems like a good midpoint. You are, of course, welcome to visit in Peterborough anytime as well. In the meantime, better brush up on my Dead jams. Do you play an instrument, Chris? Peace K

And the extra fee for the mailorder... all I could find in all my searches was the price of the ticket, $25, but later I found that there was an additional $4 charge for each mailorder ticket. Argh! I did include my postage, however, and a nice envelope design so I hope someone got a kick out of that.

yeah.... that was a bit of a trick....I see now it is $29 for the tix.....well you may still win the tix for your letter.............then you will have extras!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Peterborough is a somewhat familiar area as I used to go to college in Lindsay !!! hope you all are well and Merry Christmas friends !!! .........c

Anyone who lived in the Toronto area in the mid- to late-80's might remember CKLN's Live Dead Orgy show, which broadcasted an entire Dead or Garcia concert. It was late at night, once a month. It was hosted by somebody named Rob, and he even made a point of making breaks so that you could stop your tape and switch sides and cassettes at just the right time. For those of us just getting on the bus for the first time, it was a great way to start one's concert recording collection - I got my first soundboards this way. Standouts for me were: *Getting the Kingswood '87 soundboard just a couple weeks after the show, which was quite a feat in the days when you had to get your Dead concert recordings on cassette tapes in the mail. *The April '71 final night of Filmore East recording, with a scorching "Hard to Handle": the best one I've ever heard and still one of my all-time favourite GD moments. *A fantastic yet inexplicably seldom-remarked upon 12/12/78 Miami show - one of the best Franklin's Towers you'll ever hear. *One of the Garcia/Kahn acoustic duo shows in early '86. Garcia's health was obviously frail in that coma year, but this show really highlighted the symbiosis between his voice and guitar picking, and revealed how much Americana roots figured in his style - this was before wikipedia could inform one of such things - you had to figure it out for yourself. I lived a bit north of downtown, so once a month friends and I would cluster up on my rooftop trying to get the best signal with my boombox rabbit ears, until we found out that you could get radio signals through coaxial TV cable. Anyway, no real point to this, other than to reminisce and give a shout-out to Rob, whoever and wherever you are. Thanks for your hard work - you may not appreciated it in your CKLN studio late at night, but it was much appreciated you helped put a few of us on the right path.

/\ Agreed. Westside, you are one of the fortunate ones who experienced this miracle from a seed. I live those years through coffee table books :( And look at the music industry today, lead by people like simon cowell etc. sad. I do my part by keeping the music of days gone by spinning away on a regular basis. I am just about to pour a glass of red and throw on Merle and Jerry's Keystone album. What a great sounding band. Howdy. While I'm mostly Yooper in spirit my better half is Canadian.....roots in New Brunswick.....though unfortunately Mum decided to live in the states many years ago. Seems I always gravitate towards living as close to the border as I can.....Northern Michigan, Montana, Washington State. Anyways, back in the day, the Bro and I had tickets for the Toronto shows following the last shows in Chicago.......wheels fell off the bus, wasn't meant to be. But have had many fine adventures in the Northern Lands & in particular the pig-roast-turned-hempfest in Ophir, Ontario circa 2000 (anyone know if that's still going on?). Love my Canadian Brothers & Sisters. They are some of the kindest souls you'll meet on this planet. Peace

Well, the day of reckoning came...Got my mail order back last week and I would have felt like the return envelope drawing I made of the heart with the lightning bolt through it - broken-hearted - had I not bought my tix online... They returned my mail order saying they had too many requests to fill. I guess my envelope artwork wasn't hot enough to win the prize! Fair enough. I knew my order was inaccurate anyway, and I'm so glad I had the instinct to buy online. I also checked GDTSTOO and the site said that Cornell was the only show that they had too many requests for... 3X too many, in fact. Must have been the low price, historic venue, etc...So, that's the way the cookie crumbles... We're still going... ha! Glad there was a plan B. K

Heard that Buffalo show was lots of fun. Our friend Corrina was there for her first Dead show - guess what they played? =) Did you enjoy Hard To Handle? I heard it was smokin. Cornell was really fun. I got my wish: They Love Each Other. That and Unbroken Chain were highlights for me. We could have boogied a little harder if they hadn't mellowed out in the 2nd set, but that was okay. It kind of fit the mellow vibe of Ithaca. What a great town. Gorgeous NY mountains. And Barton Hall was superb - acoustics were unbelievable and with a springy dancefloor. Just great to hear these guys still kickin it out. Especially Phil - holy crap, you wouldn't know he's a month away from 70. Geez, he is on his game - better than ever - that man is dangerous. Missed the drummers, though. They really contribute the foundation of the sound. I'd say that even with John K, I still enjoyed the Dead at MSG more. Just a mindblowing show in terms of material and so well played, especially by Warren. He and John each have their strong points. It just goes to show that no one can replace the amazing Mr. Garcia. Here's one of many links to Cornell: http://www.archive.org/details/furthur2010-02-14.akg.suraci.sbeok.10607… Love you Can heads. Peace, K

hope you all are doing grate !!! Made it safe and sound to Buffalo and back. Parking lot was fun but snowy, If you stood in one place for too long you would look like a snowman after a while. There was a campfire in the lot, met some good people and scored what we wanted with ease. The theatre is really neat and fancy, I saw Bob and Rob here in 1995. We went in a bit early and had some drinks, then headed to 3rd row right of center. 20 min to show time we both 8 a dose. I really enjoyed this show even though I did not care for the setlist, the playing was just amazing. At times I was dancing my face off and other times I just had to stand there in pure amazement of what I was hearing. Set break OUTSIDE !!!! really fun. Second set, chris is now in skypilot mode, great times and lots of smiles :) loved the shakedown near the end. Left the place in peace and after a quick bite walked back to the hotel for more festivities.. And today........I got tix to Rochester in June :):):)...............the shows are close and reasonable in price. ALSO.... KRS......listened to your show on the sat radio that night, sounded great and was so cool to have at home. I bet it was cool just being at the venue and hanging out !!! We are all so lucky to have this so available right now, cheap tix, close to home, band is amazing...............I love it Most recordings are available on archive.org soon after the show. Talk to you guys later, I tried uploading fan photos ??(we will see) Also..... new "Canadian Dead Songs" soon hahahahahahahah ............chris

I think it's telling that our patriotic pride is quiet on the CanHead forum. We don't usually blow the horn too loud around here, though there was some partying in the streets for sure. I think that there's a sensitivity to the fact that we're guests in a mostly American scene and wouldn't want to be rude! (I can't imagine that there are no hockey fans here... seeing that it was the most viewed sports program in Canadian television history - 21.5 million people, 64.3 percent of Canada's population, watched some portion of the game.) And what a game it was! I don't know about you guys, but it was kind of surprising that we came away with so many medals... didn't expect it, especially after what I remember from Calgary '88. People were high off the Olympic buzz last week. That's if you support the Olympics... whole other topic there. Any heads from Vancouver wanna share your experiences pre- and post- Olympic invasion? As for FURTHUR adventures... I am gonna truck down to the ArtPark in Lewiston for the 8th of July ... but I'd sure love to see you in Rochester, Chris! Many of my buddies will be there. I will too, if I can make some "special arrangements" =) Cheers, K
