    Tape Trade Policy

I posted this in the taper forum, but thought this may be the better spot (also, patience is not a virtue of mine). I am sure this exists in written form somewhere, I just can't seem to find it.

What is the official band policy for trading in shows that have been officially released? Specifically, I am wondering about the ones that were released officially but are out of print. Seems to me that if they are not for sale currently, we would not be costing the band money by trading those shows. In fact, the only folks it would cost are those selling the out of print releases at a profit on the secondary market. Just curious what the official policy is on this considering the volume of official releases these days.

Yes. I suspect Pig was resting from his short reunion tour with the band in December '71 and fortifying his commitment to sobriety in what had to have been an unfathomably difficult lifestyle change (if not in terms of medical necessity, then certainly in practice).

"Ace" was recorded from January - March '72, but recall that Pig's alcohol-related health problems forced a touring hiatus in August '71 that culminated with hospitalization in September for bleeding ulcers, hepatitis, and spleen problems. He was only able to rejoin the Dead beginning early December in Boston, at which time I recall Phil describing Ron as shockingly frail in his book. Not surprisingly, Pig's contributions are limited, and while progressively more energetic throughout the month (at least to my ears), they are still anemic by historical standards; though by NYE he sounds beat.

In retrospect, it's a miracle that the Dead community (once and future) got Pig back in functional form for the brilliantly recorded European tour, especially given how quickly he dropped off radar for related health problems afterward.

EDIT: And yes, "sabbatical" serves as a neat and entirely appropriate bit of shorthand in conversation among those who know....

essentially it was a dead album with everyone on board contributing except for Micky who was on a sabbatical, (as i see it) and Pig, why wasnt Pig contributing? was he too sick at the time?

    RE: NYE '69

CC, your post invites a bit of confusion by suggesting that you saw both the Dead and TSOC on the same NYE bill at Winterland in '69; though 50 years is an understandably long time. It's hard to imagine, but the Dead were not playing on a West Coast home field that December 31st, and were rather in the midst of an odd eastbound triptik that took them to Dallas on 12/26, Hollywood (FL) on 12/28, and the Boston Tea Party on 12/29-30, while closing out at the Fillmore East on 1/2-3/70.

Indeed, the '69 NYE playbill on the poster you linked does not name the Dead. So TSOC and the GoGD were on opposite coasts at the decade's close. In any event, here's a link to a CM SBD for the Dead's '69 NYE show:
    https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1969/12/31?source=87994

Incidentally, I couldn't find a poster for Boston NYE, but here's one from the night before (it would appear the promo dept. missed the spirit of the "grateful" dead; you'd think an impossibly early incarnation of Maiden was playing that night!):
    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_YQBsfGwVEeo/TUSkqEWWy3I/AAAAAAAARQs/qRvbGdWK_…

However, you are correct that the Dead played NYE '70 at Winterland, but, consistent with the playbill cited in Deadbase50, the following promo poster does not show TSOC on the same stage, but rather NRPS, "assorted friends" (apparently Hot Tuna), and Stoneground (note also, "lights by Little Princess 109").
    https://img0.etsystatic.com/030/0/8448089/il_570xN.542921874_q4nc.jpg

Checking Deadbase, here's a link to what seems the complete NYE '70 show; however, it appears to be mix of AUD and FM broadcast that provides poor sound quality through Cumberland (even so, the Truckin' opener is well worth a listen), but thankfully improves in time for the set's highlights at Cryptical and China>Rider through close at UJB.

Regardless of which show you attended, either would've been a great way to kick off your own personal attendance record! Got a story?/K

I can not find the 1st GD show I attended anywhere in GD archives. No GD archive lists the same bands that I saw that night, as confirmed by the Sons archive which has the poster from that night:

<<Wednesday, December 31, 1969: '1969 New Years Eve 1970', Winterland 2000 Post Street at Steiner Street, San Francisco, California
The band was billed only as 'The Sons' on the poster printed for this show. Also on the bill: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna. Lights by Brotherhood of Light. This show, from 8:00pm to 8:00am, was promoted by Bill Graham Presents In San Francisco.>>

    limited releases logic explained

Could you please explain the logic of "limited releases" as it applies to an "alternative" business model, such as the grateful dead" The "limited release" model is a concept taken from the good old music biznezz, in order to promote sales, keep prices high, and maintain collector value of limited products.
I "missed" the window for daves pick's 30, a rare release from the year 1970, the first show that I recorded 1/3/70. I was disappointed, but managed to get one on a record/cd selling site. I paid double, but I still saved $$$, as I do not want to purchase a "subscription" to the daves picks yearly releases, as I am primarily interested in obtaining music from the 1966-1970 period, and not many releases are from these years. I guess I could always buy a subscription, and then sell off the unwanted items on another site for a profit, which is what this concept does, encourages a "black market". I do not consider this to be "progressive" in the least. I would rather purchase through GDCORP, as I have in the past, but if GDCORP wants to encourage this type of atmosphere, I am forced to participate in order to get what I want, and I am grateful to the sellers who have made it possible to get what I want. But it sure seems contrary to what Jerry's idea of business was.

Hi, guess I'm pretty dumb, BUT, how do I delete a message I have posted? I posted a msg for free tapes, now, the tapes have found a new home, & we don't need to leave that msg posted any longer...Thanx, Timmy

Well, the short version is that at the moment you can't, because we turned off that function because it was creating some really bizarre side effects. I'd suggest doing what they do on Freecycle (and if you don't know about Freecycle, it's the best!), and just make a new post that the tapes are taken. I could go back and manually delete it if you're still getting deluged with hopeful emails, though. Just lemme know. This does point to an interesting problem; if I delete it it might throw off subsequent conversation, and if I don't delete it somebody comes along six months from now and in a wild burst of optimism thinks the tapes are still there... Hm.

Being able to edit our own posts would be the best solution, IMO. Maybe it does the same thing as what marye is describing but most web boards I frequent are able to allow that feature without any problems. The Dude Abides!

that feature was turned on. Unfortunately it seems inextricably linked to the surrealism problem, i.e. posts suddenly appearing wildly out of order. You know, three answers, an unrelated post, and then the original question. If we can get that pesky little issue solved I think it would be great to restore the feature, though. I'll mention it to the intrepid techs.

Is there a forum for single Dead-Heads to connect? The appreciation of the Grateful Dead as a common tie that binds is something I would like to find. More specifically, cute little hippie chicks in Souther Cali? Any suggestions?

Hey all you sweet people! Im not sure if this is the right space to post a question of this sort but anywho. My name is Amy, and I have been a long time grateful dead fan, as well as a long time early childhood educator. Having started a family of our own recetly, my husband & I have decided to start a childcare center of our own. I struggled for a while about what to call it, and finally decided on The Dancing Bear Childcare Center. Id love to be able to use the GD dancing bear logo for our center, but Im not sure who to contact and how to go about doing this? I thought you might have some info. regarding this, and would be so grateful for any info. your willing to share! Thanks so much & I look forward to hearing from you! Amy Jane

First off, Amy --I salute you on your choice of a professional path. I come from a line of teachers myself and hold them in the highest of regard, especially those involved in the education of the little ones. It's truly possible to save lives by getting them steered in a positive direction as soon as it can be done, so major thumbs up to you. Regarding the naming thing, I would guess that you can, with a few obvious exceptions, call your business whatever you'd like (but of course I doubt that you'd see, for instance, an unlicensed Grateful Dead Auto Parts or a Terrapin Station Petting Zoo getting away with it for very long). I mean, upon whose intellectual property rights does the mere name "Dancing Bear" infringe? As to logos, we're probably singing a different tune. If I started up a national chain of soda/ice cream parlors, there's probably not a lot that the Coca-Cola Company could do about me naming my shops "The Real Thing" --but I daresay they'd balk at my incorporating the duly trademarked Coke "ribbon" as part of my company logo, whether or not I asked in advance for their permission to use it. It's just good corporate CYA practice. Suppose I had tainted product in my shops that was making people sick, and that it became a big local and national cable news story, replete with film crews and reporters parked outside of my storefronts --Coke's image would be damaged by association, and wrongly so, which is why they would have their lawyers fire off a cease-and-desist order within minutes of getting wind of what I was up to and why they'd never grant a request for permission if I bothered to ask in the first place. It's in that vein, but I wish you the best of luck and salute you for doing as many others would not by asking for permission in advance.

I can't remember exactly, but in Fayetteville, North Carolina (home of the 8nd Airborne Division) there was an auto painting (I think!) shop that had a dancing bear as its streetward sign.

Hey Amy,you have to check whether the image itself is trademarked. If it is not, then you can use it as is. If it SHOULD be trademarked, then change the image somewhat on your logo, and have someone paint your logo freehand ie: give the bear a bigger belly, have it doing a cartwheel, add a ball or some child's toy, a trumpet, put a hat or even shoes on the bear...you get the idea. and then it is your own original image (I think anyhow, can research this further though, just to be sure that I am not telling you crap)

The first one was on Steal Your Face, but there are other better versions. I always loved this song as I have spent lots of time on and around the Mississippi River. I like how the song travels down the river as have I. But Bobby never sings the verse about "cavortin in Davenport", too bad. Written by the great Johnny Cash. Do I contradict myself? Did they just remove the 8/20 "Taper's Section" with all of the reaction and commentary/criticism from the site? So now its "The Grateful Dead, Inc." censoring Dead Heads? How Pathetic! This site has nothing to do with the freedom, joy and honest commerce that was once the Grateful Dead! Dr. Funky

I have two photos of the Dead performing from the seventies. I have had them a long time, so long in fact that I'm not entirely sure who gave them to me, or if that person was the same person who actually did the photographing. Can I post them without needing to be concerned about any of these issues, given copyright law, etc. etc.?

"I heard my dream went back downstream, cavortin" in Davenport." Is that the line you are talking about Hal? I haven't noticed Bobby not singing this line. He may have missed it a few times, but I believe he hit it more often than not. Am I missing something? BTW, DeadBase shows this song appearing in 397 shows. Peace, Richard

Richard, you are right. Tonight has been Big River Night at this household. Bobby sang "I heard my dream went back downstream, cavortin" in Davenport." in every version I listened to. I think I have to eat crow, Texas crow that is. I was probably singing that verse so loud that I never heard Bobby sing it. And I'm pretty attached to it because I did my fair share of cavortin in Davenport. Glad you are still on the site. I loved that Bobby and Jerry were always bringing classics like this out (most of them). Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Hey Hal,Sounds like great way to spend an evening. Big River is a really cool song which often inspired both Bobby and Jerry to some smokin' guitarwork. I once made a CD of nothing but NFA from different shows. It was a lot of fun to listen to. I may do that again, with Big River. Yahoo! Peace, Richard

this may be in the wrong section, but my idea, though it would make the opening screen for the forums really long, I realixe... but is there any chance ALL of the topics could be visible on one screen? kind of like The Scene area, which has most of the sub-sections listed. it would help me find stuff, since I can't remember where all of the different topics are, or where they are buriried.
