Strat-wolf-bean - I wonder if the picture you saw is from 1975 at Golden Gate Park or Kezar Stadium ?

OK, so guess we got crossed up

on exactly which picture (of the aforementioned Renee Berg) was in question. The one I saw, which clearly must be from '73 or '74, was of her, behind Jerry - who is playing Wolf and wearing a leather jacket (outdoors show, clearly not the Family Dog).

Apples to Oranges, apparently ... But all good.
    Cheers!

Yes, Jerry's playing a strat on my dvd on 2/4/70. Just going off photos, he seemed to alternate between this one and a red Gibson SG during 1970, and then those odd shaped guitars seemed to make an appearance in 1971. I actually prefer the sound of the Gibson on shows from 1970.

Last night concert with Harry Manx... long heard his recordings, first time live. Solo on several instruments, including a guitar with a sympathetic twelve string section, a sitar effect foot pedal, foot actuated percussion (left foot snare, right foot kick drum). He has a number of recordings which can be found on the u, glad to see him to Voodoo Child, Slight Return. Mostly slide blues but lots of stuff, kept trying to tag his voice like a Tom Waits drizzled Springsteen, he finished with Van Morrisons Crazy love and had Van down. This past week four concerts in seven days, a new record. Frisell program seen down in Florence, MA was performed in Brooklyn twice over this weekend and can be streamed now,
search on Roulette. And I had to return to some of the most best slide (besides Derek) , Sonny Landreth, found playing with John Hiatt on Riding with the King at the AVO Session, Basel, also on the tube. Have a great Superb Owl, everyone.

? In the video clip I quickly checked from 2/4/70, he’s playing a strat?
Perhaps wherever/whatever your perusing is either the Peanut or the Pretzel?Their aptly named shapes make them instantly recognizable. The Pretzel was early Rick Turner (RIP) pre Alembic that Jerry never played onstage and eventually gave it to Sam Cutler (RIP) as a gift. It was stolen from Sam, but mysteriously showed up at Ricks shop 45 years later.
The Pretzel was another early Alembic hybrid that JG did play briefly, especially I believe at Capitol Theatre 71 shows?
But unless the videos I watched are labeled wrong, he’s playing a strat on 2/4/70: Hard to Handle and China/Rider…

Fun gig, I'm so glad the BBC filmed it.

Twelve years later on the 21st of February, I recall catching a fine Grateful Dead show in Oakland. I often think this would be a quality, representative performance for Dave to release. Good song selection, well played - notable for a lovely Eyes coming out of Space, the last time that ever happened - and no Hornsby, just Vince. Don't get me wrong I enjoy Hornsby's contributions a lot - in a perfect world he'd have been the guy (sorry Vinnie) - but I think this is a great showcase for what Vince could do after just six months in the band.

Well recorded unofficial album. The official Dreamin’ Man Live 1992 is brilliantly recorded but doesn’t have the full concert. I recommend them both.

RIP Mike Ratledge of Soft Machine who I’ve just noticed died a few days ago.

... I looked up the Lindley Meadows pic/s and Jerry is playing the first of the two T. Beans he used. So, it is definitely from earlier.

Interesting then - what is in that video you mention/picture that came up would possibly be a very early Irwin/Alembic (prototype) that predates Wolf's commissioning in 1972 and actual 'launch' of it at shows in late summer of 1973.

    Hmmm ....

Postscript - Here's what would make most sense to me: On 2/4/70 they were just back from New Orleans & "the bust" therein, but some of their equipment is not ... So Ol' Jer borrowed/was loaned that prototype Alembic in order to have the show come off - complete with groovy chick dancers. A couple of Archive reviews indicate it 'sounds different' and TBH, I haven't heard it (yet), as I don't have the Download Series releases.

Apparently (well, let's say 'hunch') he had such a good time playing it that day, that is what led to the refinement/development of the 1973-4 version ... Cool
