The Deadcast begins our deep dive into Wake of the Flood, including multi-track breakdowns for Mississippi Half-Step, never-heard outtakes, studio memories from Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, & the origins of Grateful Dead Records with co-founder Ron Rakow.

Fascinating notes on “Mississippi Half-Step” from both Alex Allan’s Whitegum and David Dodd’s Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics.
On the studio version of “Mississippi Half-Step,” bluegrass fiddle legend Vassar Clements–also Jerry Garcia’s bandmate in Old & In The Way–plays on a violin seemingly built by Gaspar Duiffoprugcar in the mid-to-late 16th century. It was given to Clements by fellow musician John Hartford.

Loving the isolated tracks
I’m a sucker for analyzing isolated tracks. What a treat to hear them on the Deadcast!
Looking forward to finding out the identity of the mystery vocalist.
