Week of November 28, 2011
I sometimes have a hard time believing how great the David Nelson Band is. I saw them three times in November 2011, and each time I found myself entirely consumed with musical satisfaction. The songs are wonderful - originals (many with Robert Hunter lyrics) and covers (Nelson has the same great ear for American music that his pal Garcia had), and every player in that band (Nelson, Siegel, bassist Pete Sears, drummer John Molo, and guitar/pedal steel wizard Barry Sless) is an absolute master of his muse. Mookie's voice is a perfect match for Nelson's. Every jam is purposeful, eloquent, democratic and inspired, and that good ol' GD thing of inviting the listener to "think this through" together is in full force. I wish I could be there for every show they ever play.
