I asked people at the gig to talk about highlights of 1988 and their hopes for 1989. Among the answers was this from the Dead's then-manager:
Jon McIntire “Selling out nine days at Madison Square Garden, the last one being the rainforest benefit that went so well, and doing the press conference at the United Nationns, and actualy entertaining a bunch of folks, and seeming to make some sort of difference internationally for rainforest awareness. That was a gas! We were on the front page of the New Delhi Times, and as we wanted it to be, the emphasis was on the rainforest, rather than on the band - jointly with the band. We wanted to get the limelight somewhere where it could do some good. My wish for ‘89 would be that somehow we can continue to combine entertainment with awareness of things that are important to us as folks who are alive on this earth.”
Enjoy!
Every Wednesday, we post a program from the Grateful Dead Hour archives for your enjoyment and enlightenment. You can browse or search the playlists at gdhour.com or on the GD Hour Search page, and let me know what program(s) you'd like to hear by emailing me at gdhour@dead.net.
Thank you for listening!
