Ken Nordine entered the Grateful Dead sphere in December of 1990, when we invited him to participate in our "Coast to Coast Live" broadcast on New Year’s Eve. He told us he was coming to the Bay Area to hang out with Tom Waits, and he offered to stop by the Oakland Coliseum and record with us on his way up to Waits’s place in Sonoma County. When he arrived, the band members came by to meet this amazing man; they had all been fans of Ken’s "word Jazz" records back in the day.

Nordine decided to stay with us and co-host the broadcast, and we all had a blast! And from that sweet encounter came a recording project: Ken Nordine brought his pal Howard Levy to Club Front on Valentine’s Day 1991 and recorded a CD with the Garcia-Grisman quartet improvising in the background. Waits came by, too, and "The Movie" is one of two performances the due delivered. The album, released on Grateful Dead Records in January 1992, was titled Devout Catalyst.

Nordine joined us again on New Year’s Eve 1991, and he also recorded another album with the Dead’s sound man, Dan Healy, titled Upper Limbo.

These reels were brand new to me at the time of this broadcast. Some of the ’66 material may have been released later.

    Enjoy!!
