New Philly '89 DVD/CD Set Coming Soon!

Here’s a cool way to kick off the new year and decade: Coming soon is a fantastic new release called Crimson White and Indigo, a DVD/3-CD set that captures every second of the Grateful Dead’s superb July 7, 1989 concert at Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium. If you loved the popular 2005 DVD/CD release Truckin’ Up to Buffalo, from July 4, 1989, well, this is the very next show: why, it’s practically like being on tour without having to pitch in gas money, eat bad road food, swelter in the heat or score a miracle ticket. Nope, all the work has been done for you—from the crisp multiple-camera shoot (with no video effects, you’ll be happy to hear) to the crystal clear and powerful audio, mixed from the original 24-track analog tapes in both Dolby Digital stereo and 5.1 surround (for the DVD), and mastered in HDCD (for the CD). But the proof is (always!) in the playing, and this show from the sizzling summer of ’89 tour is sure to please both hard core and casual fans with its energy, diverse song list and passionate playing.

Two years removed from the craziness that surrounded the “comeback” tour of 1987 and the Dead’s unprecedented flirtation with mainstream success—thanks to “Touch of Grey” and the In the Dark album—the group was still riding the crest of that wave and attracting thousands of new fans with each passing tour. The summer of ’89 began in style for the Dead on the solstice itself with a nationally televised/broadcast concert from Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif. A week and a half later, the GD circus hit the road for seven East Coast stadium shows, followed by a handful in Midwest amphitheaters. The group was in excellent form throughout, offering a great selection of old and recent favorites, and polishing some of the new songs which would make up their album-in-progress at the time, Built to Last. Visually, the Dead’s stage set that summer was perhaps the most spectacular they ever mounted—designed by noted Czech artist Jan Sawka, it consisted of dozens of enormous painted canvas panels covered with various patterns, colors and shapes—some abstract, some concrete; quite an amazing sight in an enormous stadium.

In what would turn out to be the final rock concert in Philly’s JFK Stadium (the first was The Beatles in August 1966; the aging stadium itself dated back to 1926), the Grateful Dead come out on a brutally hot afternoon (after a fine opening set by Bruce Hornsby & the Range) with rock ’n’ roll on their minds. “Hell in a Bucket” is an appropriate opening choice for a day that is nearly hot as Hades, and then Jerry takes the party to the next level with a truly inspired “Iko Iko.” He’s all smiles, and that’s always a good sign! From there, the first set dips into some blues (“Little Red Rooster”), Hunter-Garcia classics like “Ramble on Rose” and “Loser,” a potent version of Dylan’s “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again,” a wonderfully exploratory version of “Let It Grow,” and finally, Brent Mydland’s still-newish anthem “Blow Away,” which is one of his finest performances of that rockin’ tune.

You gotta love a second set that opens with a warm and inviting “Box of Rain”—peppy and nicely sung—and then right on its heels a “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain” that is as “up” and celebratory as you could hope for: The “Scarlet” breezes along with joyous purpose, and the “Fire” hits all sorts of mighty peaks; at nearly 25 minutes, it’s a spectacular pairing. “Estimated Prophet” is marked by a smoldering intensity and then the jam that follows settles into the majestic Hunter-Garcia ballad “Standing on the Moon,” surely one of their greatest late-era compositions, and played only seven times before this standout version. The DVD depiction of the “Rhythm Devils” percussion duel gives us a fascinating glimpse of the tools and techniques Mickey and Bill used to create their magical alchemy, and then, following “Space,” the band launches into a hair-raising, careening “Other One” (dig how the camera shows us Phil’s rumbling bass intro up close!), Jerry takes us down to the docks of the city for an emotional “Wharf Rat,” and Bob gets back into party-mode for the concluding “Lovelight.” The encore of Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” offers a beautiful grace note for a show that has taken us through so many different spaces and moods.

The beautifully designed package for Crimson, White and Indigo (the name comes from a line in “Standing on the Moon,” of course) includes loads of great photos by Bob Minkin and an essay from veteran Grateful Dead observer Steve Silberman. All in all it’s a wonderful show from a great year!

Actually I was defending the store
As I have several times in the past. I only commented because I think its funny. Its always the same thing lately - a new release comes out, everyone posts how excited they are then all of a sudden the posts turn into bashing the store and I was predicting that's what would happen again with the newest release. Even though I have not had a problem I will admit the negative comments have made me think twice!! I am on the same page as Buddy Plant's comment I was just being more of a smart ass. Wow I am sorry you took it the wrong way and that you would think that I would not support and be grateful for the people you mention, this site, the vines, and everything else. I'm sorry but I will never order from this site again. The last two orders I have placed have been an absolute nightmare. I have been ordering merch here since the mid 90's but I'm done now. Simple orders like a cd set and several stickers went undelivered for 6 weeks. Only response to multiple voice mails and emails came weeks later. Claimed my entire order had not been sent because the stickers were out of stock. I have no reason to believe they would have even notified me if I had not made so many inquiries. Cancelled the order. This is mail order from the 1970's, certainly not this century. I'll buy in-store only from now on. Can't wait for this release though.

I said I`m not a gambler. I don`t want to take the chance of getting somthing that won`t play then having to wait months for shipping or take the chance of getting totally ripped off by the big rihno . Yes Marye does a fine job around here . but if there is a safer secure place to make my purchase then that is where I`m going . HaHa Like Buddy Plant say`s Bring on the Drama !!! Oh wait it`s already here ..

Thanks so much for leaving out the "trippy effevts" ,we can get there on our own if we want to, Seriously though, this particular release seems as though it's gonna be a blast to hear and see again. Thank you and lets get some more 70's video releases out ther .THAT WOULD TRULY BE A BLAST ,to go back to my early days traveling around with the boys,as my first show was the Stanley Theater in Jersey City in '72. It just NEVER gets old.

The heck with EBay, you can find most of those cd's for less at Amazon.com. No DVD is worth $40.00. They should be ashamed for asking this much....No previous DVD comes close to this price unlees you talking expanded sets.

I was at this show, and indeed it was a blast! If memory serves that night was a full moon, I kept hoping the camera person would focus on that while they played "Standing On The Moon"....maybe they did? Great time...I think at one point the authorities were going to cancel the show because they were worried about the structure, but they didn't thank goodness. Peace, Michael

Lots of comments about how $40 is too much for a DVD. In fact, this is a three-CD set plus a DVD. I'd love to see this for closer to $30, but really $40 isn't such a lot to pay for this much audio and video. And, of course . . . you don't technically HAVE to buy it if you don't want to . . .

for me I'll watch the dvd maybe once and never again. Its more about time, which I never have to watch a show. The last few years the trend of cd/dvd packages are such rip off crap. Release seperate packages. Because if I have the audio whats the point really? Unless you were there its not even close to the same thing. Do I get a hit of acid with this or some fresh dank smoke? Please release these as seperate packages in the future please. Or maybe Obama will help us...hahahahahhaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahaha he was just lying and looking scared on tv sorry...

Thanks for putting this one out! This period of the Dead is seriously my favorite! Such a great summer run that year. While it is a bit high, I love the dvds and I usually break down and buy the cd as well, so its no big thing. Hopefully we'll get some nice bonus footage too!

And I am very grateful for it. Thanks to all who made this release possible, the next GD tour date after the Truckin' Up To Buffalo(7/4/89in 2005). I just wished I was able to make this show, but wasn't able to do so, because of other commitments at the time. Hopefully, the deadnet store will include a bonus disc in this package or I may consider buying this CD/DVD from my local bricks & motar record store, who is struggling to stay in business.

This was my first show! I remember hanging out at a friends house around 11am, we started to talk about "the Dead" for some reason, and i asked "so where are they now". My friend responds with, there in philly now. Well i turned to my 2 friends and asked, can we go? So i got on the bus and thats where it all began.

Love '89. Truckin' up to Buffalo is one of the recordings I save for special occasions. Can't wait to get my sweaty hands on more of '89. And great packaging too? Un-dirtyword-believeble. The gods have smiled upon us. As DVD requests go: how 'bout the Rockpalast German TV show they did with the Who in 81. Great playing. Great camera work. Great sound quality. The band still relatively young and still relatively relevant culturally (a lot changed in western culture after '81. liberalism and its Rock sound track started to become more relic than relevent. But I digress). I suppose the quest appearence of Pete Townsend might be a legal barrier. But the Who have already officially released their part of the show. I would love to see that show digitally prefected. But if wishes were horses beggars would ride.

RainchildOh yes, remember it well--the summer's heat prompted the show organizers to set up small spray-showers down on the field: wet tee-shirt (or kaftan, or granny dress) heaven...! The sun came up in honey.... Also, I believe this was the first tour they (y'know, Them, the High--heh!--Documenters of the Hypnocracy) were using digital camera/recording tech, & I always wondered when there might be a DVD of this show or others in that tour.

This was a good show - the only strange things were locals have a tradition of dumping outhouses and some dude was walking in nothing but boots with such pride as he "hung out"all and all a great summer especially Buffalo and Alpine first night. I believe it was one of the hottest I have been to except maybe Louisville

I've had a good audience recording since the tape tree that summer. I've been waiting for this to come out on DVD for years. Interestingly enough, two days later I saw The Who across the street at the Vet on 7/9/89.

The fire department of Phila wanted to cancel the show and condemn the building due to numerous problems. Although it was a city building it was never inspected before hand, typical of Philly. But with over 40,000 Heads already in the bowl there was no way they could cancel and cause even the friendly Deadlings to get riot minded.... So thankfully we have another Philly show to flashback to........ The Spectrum was always a better place for a show but this show I remember as a really good one ,,or should I add,, a really good 'Other One' ,,,,,

Is there a bonus disc or anything being packaged with it? I'm looking for a reason to buy thru dead.net and thus far I have yet to see it. :(

Personally I wouldn't be laughing too much if I had ordered this from Amazon UK at their prices. If I order from Amazon I always go to Amazon US. In this case it should cost $32 + $6.50 for standard shipping to Europe (~ 1 week) which comes out at $38.50 - much better than $96 + $3 standard shipping within Europe from Amazon UK. In good old Euros these prices come out to 28.50 Euros from the US against 72.00 Euros from the UK. American readers please note that CD prices are high in Europe compared to the US - here in Holland a typical CD purchased in a local store will cost between 17 Euros and 21 Euros ($23 - $28). You think thats bad - don't ask about the price of gasoline!

From my Australian location I generally check pricing at both amazon.uk.co and amazon.com before placing an order. The same item can vary significantly in price depending upon which store you use and depending upon whether or not it is listed as an "Import". If I want an Ace release (for example) then it's always cheaper from the UK. Books tend to be cheaper via the US. Being able to do on-line currency conversions is real handy and has sometimes swayed my choice of amazon store. But, Amazon.co.uk has the quickest delivery!!

It does say DVD on the "colorful" disc, and it's a 4-disc set. I don't think Amazon has a 4-disc audio-only version when this description says 3 audio 1 DVD.

One of my finest moments as a Dead Head was being at this, sweltering hot, July show. Authorities condemmed the stadium that morning but decided to let the show go on to avoid potential riots. The boys closed out this great venue in wonderful style laying down a truly A+ show. The fantastic first set serves as a mere appetizer for the unbelieveably stunning second set. Glad to see the title of this release as, in my humble opinion, this is the finest Standing On The Moon ever played. The Box Of Rain and Loser from this show are also peak versions. No Dead Head will be disappointed in this one. Been waiting for it to be an official release for 20 years now. Thanks boys. "The singing man is at his song. The holy on their knees"

I haven't even gotten this and I'm wondering what could be the next release? At this rate of every 5 years or so maybe i'll be alive for 4 or 5 more releases. seriously what is the hold up w/ this stuff can we get our hands on some of this while were still able to enjoy it?What happened to a video every year or so? I just downloaded the Phil Bday show and I thought that was stellar how about releasing some more post Jerry stuff as well. My $ are ready to be spent. I dont have much faith in any action on my words I remember I said the same thing on the little card they sent us w/ the video to Backstage Pass what is it 20 years ago now Rogue

I constantly wonder what releases are coming next, even while I'm placing an order for whatever release is currently available. So while I wait for this one to drop, I'm already thinking about the next box set (and the one after that), the next Road Trips (and the one after that), and the next Pure Jerry...speaking of Pure Jerry, aren't we overdue for one of those?
